SPY REPORT
Citizens of Aradi, put down your forks. No, seriously. Put. Down. The. Forks. I have
uncovered something far more dangerous than fluoride-coated weapons, spy birds, or the
suspiciously buoyant contents of the harbor. This time, the conspiracy is swimming
straight onto your dinner plate.
Scrod.
Not ordinary scrod. Magically modified scrod. They pull it from the sea, haul it under
armed guard to a wizard's tower, expose it to who-knows-what manner of enchantments,
and then sell it back to us battered, fried, and suspiciously inexpensive. Sea. Tower.
Plate. That is the pipeline, people. Follow the fish!
Meanwhile, Rain Mistress of Temere Nomen seized the Duelmaster's throne by devastating
Badger in a one-minute challenge. She now sits at 17-4-0 and 114 recognition, and
apparently one crown is not enough because the Commission says she will travel to
Advanced Duelmasters after next turn. Coincidence? I think not. Who benefits when
Aradi's best warriors disappear to distant arenas? The scrod merchants, that's who.
The Bunkhouse had another strong showing. Coldy survived a three-minute bloody affair
with Shadowloop, Sudsy defeated Agent Static, Rusty flattened Sleeper Cell in a
minute, and Ders handled Man's Laughter. That helped keep The Bunkhouse atop the
recent team standings at 11-4 over the last three turns. They also somehow remain the
team Tinfoil Mafia most wants nothing to do with, which raises questions. Lots of
questions. The sort of questions normally answered in windowless rooms by men carrying
sacks of enchanted haddock.
Tinfoil Mafia had a rougher afternoon. Mrs. Redacted fell narrowly to Warfour, Agent
Static lost to Sudsy, Shadowloop lost to Coldy, and Sleeper Cell got run over by
Rusty. Wetwork Zero salvaged a victory over Happy Peasant, although it took twelve
minutes and was apparently so dull that several spectators may have entered medically
significant sleep states. That is exactly what happens when you eat tower-treated
scrod before attending the fights. The evidence continues to pile up.
Gothic Horrors, however, had themselves a little blood-soaked festival. Ice killed
Trustworthy Scribe, while Lodie Pain killed Persistent Beggar. Silk Shadow tried to
complete the trilogy but instead got beaten by another Persistent Beggar, proving
either that the Commission keeps a warehouse full of them or that beggars are being
magically replicated somewhere beneath the arena. Gothic Horrors jumped from eleventh
to third in the three-turn standings, and their two kills this turn probably had
something to do with it.
Aggie also had an unfortunate turn. The Bunkhouse sent him to the Dark Arena with a 5-
9 record, where the Bored Elf butchered him in one minute. I have long maintained that
nobody named "Bored Elf" is actually bored. He is waiting. Patiently. Possibly beside
a cauldron. Possibly stirring fish.
As for the wider numbers, Gothic Horrors gained 22 points to lead all teams on the
move, followed by The Bunkhouse with 17 and Unnameables with 14. Tinfoil Mafia
remained the most avoided team, while Rain Mistress drew the most challenges before
taking the throne. Agent Static was this turn's favorite, though given his association
with Tinfoil Mafia, I assume half those votes were submitted from underground bunkers.
And now we reach the heart of the matter. You think magically modified scrod begins
with some harmless wizard saying, "What if this fish stayed fresh longer?" No. First
they make it bigger. Then boneless. Then obedient. Then one night you wake up, and
your dinner is standing beside the bed, glowing blue, whispering your true name.
Do not trust seafood that has visited a wizard. Until next turn, check your supper for
runes, avoid anything described as "tower fresh," and remember: If the scrod blinks
first, DO NOT EAT IT.
