Let me preface this by saying I am very new and have a lot to learn...
From everything I can read or find, having a lot of the Size stat on a gladiator is a bad thing:
Size helps:
Hit points? I think?
Damage potential
Maybe something else?
Size hurts:
Defensive stuff, like parry or dodge?
Something else that I'm clueless about?
The number of stat points you get in other stats.
So, is this aspect of the game imbalanced or not? Do the little guys rule the sands?

What you have noticed about is true. There are times having a tall fighter is nice, they are potentially able to do more damage. But yes, having fewer points tied up by height does allow you to make a better warrior.
Remember, do not let the lack of realism for creation bother you, this is just a mechanism we all have to work with. I have size 20 guy on one of my teams, his record sucks, but he can win fights in one hit.
Yeah, you got a pretty good idea of what size does. The "Maybe something else" is Initiative skill base (the number of Initiative skills the fighter is born with). Larger sizes start with higher Ini, smaller guys start with lower. Sizes 7-14 are considered normal, and don't get skill modifiers either way due to size.
Damage is handled differently, on more of a gradual scale. So, everybody loves to get a useable size 3, but they have to be careful he doesn't get rolled up with the statement "does LITTLE DAMAGE with each blow". That will often doom a fighter, no matter how many skills he starts with, unless you can raise ST and get a damage increase early in his career.

I don’t think the game has a lack of realism. Sometimes big guys win, sometimes they don’t. Just like in real life. Back in the old days there was an arena called Monuntial. In Monuntial there was a Doc LeGrand style striker named Zippo the Sloth of Lost Genesis. A Doc LeGrande striker was one of those big “unrealistic” warriors. This manager designed big warriors all of the time. He also wrote a couple of articles on how to make these beasts. He’s still around, but he goes by Deke now. Zippo was AMAZING. Not only did he get duel master a couple of times, but he also went to the Isle of the Eye. This same big warrior got a tourney victor in Grand Tourney 13. At the time his regular record was 10-5-2 and his tourney record was 8-2-0.
One of my first warriors was this guy: ST=12 CN=8 SZ=20 WT=13 WL=10 SP=13 DF=8 (6-5-2 Basher). He ran amok for ten turns before someone stopped him. I had no idea what I was doing. So I gave him a quarter staff and aimed him at opponents.
Sorry for rambling, but my point was this; it might not be the roll up. It could be you. Look at your strategy. Does it fit the style? What about weapons? Maybe your opponents are better than they appear. I DAed an awesome, big sized aimed blow before I realized how the game changed. I regret that so much because she was fun to play. OR you just didn’t get the right rolls when the warrior was made. It’s like with any game that has random factors; you will not always get crits.
And also like real life; size doesn’t matter.

I didn't really say who the manager was. But his name was Prophet. He is a friend of mine from High school and the reason I play Duel Masters.
DocLegrand is the manager whose concept i was talking about and has several lord protectors and top end tournament champions. One of my favourites is Archmaster Baron Cockroach. I call him archmaster because he has an archmaster rating in all skills. He also maxed out all of his physical stats, excluding size, to 25.
