Another pesky question goes into my think place...thanks in advance!
Is speed a critical stat for any of the styles?
I get the feeling that Speed is not very important?
Good for coordination and contributions to initiative skill learnings (I'm shaky on understanding this, but guessing more speed = more starting initiative skills). Not sure what else it is good for except taking away points from other stats.
Is speed ESSENTIAL for any of the styles and, if so, why is that?
What is the best thing to do if you get a rollup with a high speed like, say, 13 or even 17 ?

It looks like you have the idea about speed. It is as you said, to help with getting initiative routines. But don't look at it as a negative. Even if you have a 13 speed warrior, it is still good for something.

Speed is most useful for offensives like Strikers and sometimes Bashers. They are similar styles, in that they are trying to get the first swing in (Decisiveness) and hopefully the last swing too.
Some styles (mainly defensives) will actually benefit from very low speed because it gives them more points elsewhere. Wall of Steels, for example, I can't think of any really good ones that don't have a low speed.
I was taught early on not to add any points to speed when designing a rollup, most of your skills are going to come from WT, WL, & DF so that's where you usually add most of your points. This is generalizing, of course, there are always exceptions. Such as a Striker with a 9 speed, if you have one point leftover, make it a 10 for that extra Dec skill.
If you haven't yet, study the skill charts (Bagman II)on Terrablood's site, it is one of the most useful resources you can have.

I ignore Speed and only add to it if I have extra points that are not needed in other areas,

My understanding is that a double-digit speed (initial numbers) automatically means an offensive-minded warrior. On the other hand, there are few 'automatic' responses in this game. Some managers would see high speed numbers and think: Striker, Slasher, Basher.
Others might see: Lunger. These are generally the sort that think 'Lunger' no matter what, so you may safely disregard those opinions.
Others might think: Parry-Riposte or Parry-Lunger, and depending on the WL and CN, I think I would look at either of those also.
Aimers need so many points in so many areas... speed is not one of these areas.
But GENERALLY, high speed is best utilized by the offensive types.
Probably.

Thank you guys.
Yes, I was wondering about Parry-Riposte and Speed but I think I will retain my high speed rollups for Strikers and Bashers while I learn a bit more about the game.
One day maybe I will amke that high speed Parry-X but...not today!
Thanks for the helps!

I know you are finish with this, but I want to make one more point. I agree with Kid Arcane about starting out with a high speed favours an offensive. the only time I might ignore that is when it is a basher.
A friend of mine had a basher with a SPEED 3 and he was pretty good. Another friend has a lord protector who has a SPEED 5 and was a 10-0-0 duel master at one point. But if you try something like that you have to off set it with a high WIT or STR.
In one of my inactive teams I have a basher named ALSVID who is 3-1-1 with these stats: ST=17 CN=12 SZ=17 WT=10(1) WL=11 SP=6 DF=12.
Personally, if they have a low speed, I try to make them a defensive style.
