Alright, since everybody and their mother is all going to say the same thing...AB, I am going to go an entirely different direction. What about this?
14-9-7-3-15-7-15 ---> 14-13-7-5-19-7-19 burned to an ultra crispy 15-15-7-7-21-7-21 WS. I think this would do amazingly well in the basic arena. (Full disclosure - I don't care for Advanced Duelmasters and focus solely on Basic DM, thus my willingness to both burn and forego the AB style).
Any ways, have fun with it. Just thought i'd give you something else to mull over.

I hesitate --- NO --- I gag at the thought of agreeing with Terminator, or having anything in common with him other than this game. However, I too shun the ADM. I used to run fighters there, but now I'm exclusively a Basic player.
That said, this guy isn't really full of ADM material anyway. So...
14-9-7-3-15-7-15 ..... 14-12-7-8-20-7-16 Wall of Steel!! (That's right -- we don't ALWAYS have to go for the 21 DF!!)
Great endurance, normal encumbrance and hit points. Load him up with plate, parry for the first minute or two, and then either bash, slash, OR just hit (there's a decent chance of getting at least GOOD damage).
Initially he won't be able to use many weapons; raise WL, then WT, then ST first. WT +1 gets you the broadsword, which is nice. ST +1 gets you the Battle Axe, and a WoS who can wield a BA is not to be trifled with!
As for skills -- you'll pick up a decent amount with almost every stat raise (CN being the exception) and a WT of 9 will keep you more competitive and able to learn future skills. This guy could be a BEAST! I like him.
