Hi all-

New player here. Found Duel 2 after going down a wikipedia rabbit hole and wound up reading the history of play by mail games. It sounded fascinating and I'm excited to start playing one.

Already ordered my set up, read through the content here and at the terrablood/assur sites and started filling out my rollup sheet.

Outside of character creation, is there anything I should know before sending in my sheet? I saw somewhere that Arena 93 is for new players, but I don't know if some of the information is out of date or if some of the arenas are inactive now. I'm fine with being assigned a random arena.

Thanks!

Welcome!

DM93 is absolutely the place to start.

Would highly suggest joining the Chatzy channel, which has a bunch of managers sitting around waiting for the opportunity to share knowledge.

They'll give you insight into designing your current team and wouldn't surprise me if someone shared a couple additional teamsheets to try.

Welcome! I'd suggest spending more than $5 for one sheet to start with, do $10-20 if feasible to get a few sheets at least to pick the best one. You can post them on here for setup advice on individual warriors and on what sheet's the best one.

After dm93 is done, transfer to 21, Sunset! Best of luck!

Not sure what part of the country you are in, but July 21-24 there is a face to face tournament in New Orleans where you can learn a lot about the game in a very short period of time.

Good to know. I'm around Portland, OR and that's a bit too soon to plan a trip, even though I have backlogged vacation time. A little unlucky to start up right before the F2F, but hopefully I will stay active and maybe join next year.

Welcome to the game. I echo everything said above including attending a Face to Face if possible. The next one is in Tempe in Jan. Also, you should try to get to know some other local Managers. I believe there are a couple in the North West.

Good luck!

FYI - they always have a winter face to face in Tempe, AZ. MLK weekend for as long as I can remember.

I will add a couple items items.

Joining 93 first would be good. There are lots of articles in there and you can ask questions that should get answered. You'll also find articles there that cycle (with occasional new articles being added) with a wealth of information (you can access the newsletter without playing in 93, too)

Whether you join 93 or not, I recommend after that choosing an arena that is active (and not a transfer arena)

DM 21 IS one of the best arenas. Not so hard that you'll get discouraged, but not so easy you'll win with bad warriors.
DM 33 is similar, but expect everyone to revert to 13-14 years old, plenty of DCing, plenty of killing.

The no tourney arenas are all generally hard, but if you don't want to play in tourneys, they are a nice place to live. All of these arenas also have a human spy reporter, which is a big plus and adds to the game.
DM 20 & 81
DM 83 (slow)

Other arenas with human spy reporters:
DM 29
DM 31 (slow)

DM 47 is an oddball of an arena, with a contest running every other year or so. During the contest, it is a brutal hard arena (like the no tourney arenas), but super fun. Another arena to consider joining if you want to be a part of this next time around (a slow arena)

Finally some arenas to mostly avoid:
DM 18 (lots of prize warriors lurk here and plenty of tourney teams)
DM 71, 72, 73 (slow transfer arenas - more tourney teams/warriors)
DM 86 (and closed 82, 84, 85) (normal speed transfer arenas - more tourney teams/warriors)

NEXT:
Definitely read about styles (and how they are not all equal).
Also realize the competition (especially in tourneys) is strong. 21 wit by itself is not special anymore. There are lots of bad setups that most of us don't bother with. If you expect every warrior to have a chance to win, you'll be very disappointed. Given what most people are willing to run, taking these bad setups will not yield great (or even good) results (regardless of how good your design and strategies are)
But we're still having fun after years and years of playing, so there is something here!!!
