Updated 9.27.10

There are two standard types of arenas:

Regular Arena: Runs twice a month.

Slow Arena: Runs once a month.

In addition, there are a couple special arenas that are ideal for players who are learning or re-learning the basics since a lot has changed since the 80's and 90's:

No-Tourney Arenas: Arena 81 and 83 are both No-Tourney arenas, which means that the warriors in these arenas cannot compete in any tourneys until they graduate. It is also stipulated that managers must run their entire team on the turns that they are competing. Arena 81 is a regular arena and 83 is a slow arena. To find old Newsletters from 81, they appear hidden, but actually exist at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules/Old_Newsletters/081news.htm

To join a No-Tourney Arena, you must send in the following pledge:

• I pledge that I will not send warriors from this team to a Tournament, nor will I use a Tournament prize on a warrior from this team.
• I pledge to run a full team when I run turns in this arena. It is understood that circumstances occassionally preclude running less than a full team, such as awaiting overviews of a replacement warrior, so a post in the 81 forum section is encouraged in such instances.
• I understand that any warrior that participates in a Tournament shall be sent to the Dark Arena until they are dead.
• I understand that any warrior that receives a Tournament prize shall be sent to the Dark Arena until they are dead.

It should also be noted that running a warrior in the Dead Tourney is also against the rules of the No Tourney arena, but teams are always free to transfer out of 81 if they want to play in a less rule restrictive arena.

Tourney Prep Arenas: Arena 82 and 84 are arenas that managers use to prep warriors for the tourneys.

Noblish Island: Arena 93 is designed to help new players get acclimated to the game. While in Noblish, you can still compete in tourneys, but after 10 turns you are required to transfer into another arena of your choice. You must be a novice to join, but if you are a decade+ absentee player, you might want to call to illustrate how much you've forgotten to see if that gets you in.

Defunct Special Arena:

All Basher Arena (The Stomping Grounds): Arena 20, which is listed in the Newsletter section by its former name Seam was an all-basher arena which means only bashers could compete. Warriors must enter the arena with 0 experience/FE, but could compete in tourneys afterwards. It was a slow arena and managers were free to run as many or little warriors as they liked. It was also possible to have a warrior that is on the team that is not a basher, assuming it is only being used in tourneys and not in the arena.

While the information provided in the various New/Returning Player stickys are designed to be as objective as possible, I wanted to address something from a very subjective standpoint (hence, it's not part of the sticky). I call it the Shadowspire Difference.

When I first returned to D2 after a 20 year break, it was exciting to see it still active and - after some mentorship - I joined the existing fray. Then an odd thing happened. Suddenly half of the arena I was primarily active in timed out which I quickly learned was for tourney prep. What bothered me was that the DM was one of those being timed out. This bothered me because it meant that the managers in the arena were more concerned with how they did in the tourney than their standing in the arena. While I quickly got on board with timing out my warriors and following the lead of the vets (one of which had three teams in the arena and another who had two), there was a part of me that missed the old days when the throne was the objective and the tourney was just a way to see if your best warrior was as good as you thought when matched against the best from other places.

In Shadowspire, it's all about the throne since there is no tourney participation to distract players. I also knew that every team had only one manager, there was no hidden tourney FE, and because every team had to run all of its warriors on the turns they participated, there was no ducking a challenge (beyond using an Avoid) or shortage of people to challenge. It was also nice that other than Kellumbo, there were none of the top tourney managers (Managerr, Mannequin, TMM, TUM, Sentinel, etc.) to hold a newbie like me back from doing fairly well. Granted, a lot of the original Shadowspire managers have raised their game and certain designs/strats that win tourneys are now known by many, so it's far from a cakewalk. Fortunately, there are also a lot of returning managers, so if you're one of them, you have plenty of peers.

The most remarkable thing about Shadowspire is that its the one arena that continues to grow, while some of the others I was in have dwindled immensely.

I am a big fan of tourneys and take part in every single one, but for recapturing the game of my youth, Shadowspire is the place to do it.

Consortium - please come back...we'll go easy on you!
