I'm glad you qualified that with your not a big fan of a "Pop Punk" band! They're not terrible but not my flavor of punk, but bands such as these can put out some good stuff!
My recent musical journies have brought me to a question:
Has American "Hard Rock" lost, or maybe it never really had, the outdoor festival? I seem to remember there being quite a few fairly big ones, there used to be one in , I believe it was, Holland Michigan. The incredible ambience, and not feeling like your in a cave while in an arena, is something that Hard Rock lends itself too very well.
We of course have DTE Theatre in the Detroit area but it's usually single bands, with an opening act, and it's only open a few months of the year. I'm obviously familiar with Rocklahoma but are there others? Not really wanting to go to Europe for either Monsters of Rock or the Sweden Rock Festival in Sweden. Though Sweden would be a place I would want to visit someday. I hear the people are generally VERY friendly in Scandanavia!
Some examples, all of which are very 'tight' bands, which some of these new bands seem to lack live! :
Visons of Atlantis - New Dawn (Masters of Rock 2011)

Wanted to add some old school. Anybody remember Accept? Well Udo, the singer, is still going!

No youtube link to this one, you've got to go on itunes and do a search for "three legged monster." They are a prog-metal trio band from Fargo, the guitar player used to be in a band called Mata Hari with me. The drummer is a killer graphic artist and did all the artwork for the album. They've been working on this CD for like 8 years on and off and finally finished it! Pull it up and do a sample listen and see if you dig it!
p.s. Street, yeah Udo still lives! Accept's latest album they did without him, Blood of the Nations, kicks some serious ass too! We did a reunion gig with my band Ransum two weekends ago and last couple times we've covered Balls to the Wall, so much fun to play live and do the super-low, evil backup vocals! One of the most underrated, heavy riffs of all-time too!

Can't remember if I ever posted this stuff but here are 2 guys from one of the bands I was in, Sudden Zephyr, we played in High School and a year into College before my other band, Diamondback, ramped up and got it's record offer. They both sing, Mark plays Keys mostly and does Roger Waters while Alex is the lead guitarist and David Gilmour vocals. They have the largest laser show of any Pink Floyd tribute band in America and they have done the whole "Dark Side of Oz"
Echoes of Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (Live in Kalamazoo,MI 2011)
Stik- Didn't one of your bands play in a Michigan Festival? Do you remember if it was in Holland, MI ... if so? Itunes is being a #@@#^ I'll check that tune after I get back from Golf!

Wanted to add some acoustic flavor here. It's a group that was known as P.R.O. and it consisted of Rik Emmett, Oscar Lopez, and Pavlo!
This is what happens when a Mediterranean Folk, a Latin Folk, and a versatile Rock/Jazz/Blues/etc Guitar player get together! It's called MAGIC!

I'm not sure WHO I would want to see there, as my dream concert, but I now know WHERE I want to go for my dream concert! Probably Triumph since I never got to see them live, if they do a reunion tour ever, but have seen Rik Emmett live 9 times.
Discovered it in a video of a live concert! Java-Eiland in Amsterdam . Of course it comes with some benefits (/ahem BULLDOGS / ahem *cough* ) but it just looks like an incredible setting. If you check out these videos you'll notice , in the first one, to the screen right a channel, later as they pan back to screen left you'll see another with a Cruise Ship docked (hopefully not Carnival "of Horrors" Cruise Line). The venue and the fans appear to be on some sort of small peninsula! I MUST GO THERE SOMEDAY!

Thanks for shaming me yet again Trip! I've just come to realize that I don't have the "Natural Talent" to play guitar/bass; though I have a good ear. It's always come through "Crushing" practice and struggle to me. They may be the next Living Color!
Here's an awesome Duet I came across:
Sharon den Adel(Within Temptation) and Anneke van Giersbergen(The Gathering) - Somewhere
2 Beautiful voices married together with orchestration. Done with The Metropole Orchestra who have worked with Yngwie and Steve Vai to name a few. It's from the Within Temptation album Black Symphony. Much along the lines of Metallica S&M.

There's one I haven't heard in many a year; when my "other" band was up at Michigan State. A lot of our friends were into many "alternative" types of music. From skate music (Killing Joke, PiL), to Joy Division/New Order, to Fugazi, to Sisters of Mercy, and plenty of Ska bands up at "State". Inevitably one of the bands at the various house parties we either played or went to would be doing Party at Ground Zero! I almost didn't listen to it, as it is a bit outside my normal tastes and I'm still to this day burned out on it; but I decided to give it another listen for nostalgia!
I have a friend who is into Strfkr (Starf**ker) so I recognized the voice I thought. I had to look it up to figure it out though. Was a smidge disappointed with Bette Davis Eyes but liked the Evil Woman cover; only thing that kept it from being a 4 or 5 star cover, for me, was the omission little riff after "The Evil Woman ......(riff)" was a major faux pas in my book.

Good catch with STRFKR ... doubt many would have recognized it

He's got a very unique sounding voice, at least to me. Kind of like how I know when I'm hearing someone play a Telecaster, Stratocaster, or Les Paul guitar; for some vocalists. That's my musician's ear .... now if only I had musician's hands
Speaking of Covers (were we?). Within Temptation just released an all cover album. It's always interesting to me to hear different genres covered by another (ie metal to classical, alternative to metal, pop to punk)
Within Temptation - The Q-Music Sessions:
1. "Grenade (Bruno Mars)"
2. "Titanium (David Guetta)"
3. "Let Her Go (Passenger)"
4. "Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey)"
5. "Radioactive (Imagine Dragons)"
6. "Crazy (Gnarls Barkley)"
7. "Dirty Dancer (Enrique Iglesias)"
8. "Don't You Worry Child (Swedish House Mafia)"
9. "Behind Blue Eyes (The Who)"
10. "The Power of Love (Frankie Goes to Hollywood)"
11. "Apologize (OneRepublic)"
3 covers from the show didn't make it to the album because the songs are too new and from big artists. I'll put'em here as they are interesting.
In the run up to the 15th anniversary of Within Temptation, the band was asked by Q-Music to choose and perform an existing track in a "Within Temptation style" once a week during fifteen weeks during their special program Within Temptation Friday. The covers consist most part of pop songs in which the band transformed into a more symphonic oriented form. Lead vocalist Sharon den Adel stated that: “Our approach was to really make the cover a new Within Temptation song. So not going the easy way by using only a piano or an acoustic guitar for example, but really trying to put all the elements of a Within Temptation track in this new version. It was quite a challenge because we had only one week to get it right, while recording an original Within Temptation song can sometimes takes up half a year! But this pressure also gave us an creative boost and it was very rewarding to get it done in time each week. Also, we learned a lot from the in-depth analysis we needed to make on these hits, written by others, in combination with implementing our own sound and style in each new cover. We are glad that we’ve taken up this challenge and are very proud of the result."

Just wanted to reinforce some of the reasons that even at age 42 Metal music still holds me in it's clutches even as my musical tastes have expanded to accept other music that the teen me could never have accepted.
It's the versatility to put it at it's most blunt. Some of the most beautiful and emotional songs ever written within the Rock/Pop genre have come from it. Whether they be popular or well known the songs can be adapted so many ways. And the musicianship is second to very few, if not none!
Here's a prime example from a newer band making waves - In This Moment. A stellar acoustic adaptation of 3 of their earlier songs, Maria Brink has quite a "Voice" . The 2 videos are off their new album (not very family friendly I will warn) which reminds me of something from Powerman 5000/Rob Zombie. Two very different views of the same band covering both mild and touching to downright gritty and energized.
In This Moment- Acoustic Set ( Lost at Sea; (4:15) Beautiful Tragedy; (9:05) Forever)

Piggybacking the last post but a different band and a pure ballad written for our troops. Would like to dedicate it to all who have served to allow us to come on sites like this while they give the ultimate sacrifice. For all current and former military this is for you! I know we have a few in our midst!
Written by the singer for his cousin who died in Iraq in 2006.
Add edit - It is of course Armed Forces Day. Strange I didn't realize it until after I posted this. Must've been a "Subconscious thought". I'll add a dedication to Rich, "Game Ogre", Abarsis the Slaughter Priest our very own Fallen Hero who served aboard a Nuclear Submarine in the Navy during the 80s. Cheers Bro! R.I.P.
