Newsletter Archive Improvement Ideas

I'm a historian at heart and spend a good amount of time reading and storing old DM Newsletters. While using the existing Duel2 archives (which I’m very thankful for … love that soft-copy!), there were a couple improvement ideas I wanted to share. More importantly, I'm interested in what others think.

Following are the Duel2 Links to DM Newsletters:
(1) Current Newsletters
(2) Archived Newsletters
(3) Archived Example for BONSUR ARENA (DM-7)

My Improvement Ideas:
    (1) Audit & Correct Existing Archived Newsletters
      (a) Match the "Newsletter Turn numbers" with "Archived Turn Numbers" (some are wrong)
      (b) Provide Missing Newsletters (if available)
      (c) Remove "Dead" Links (these just “clutter” things up and make it hard to find “real” ones)
    (2) Plan for more than 750 Turns
      > Based on my figuring, it will be less than a year that the current archived pages will start "maxing-out". For example, the DM-7 Archive (see third link above) is currently on TURN-729 with only 21 turn-links remaining.
      > Some possible solutions:
        (a) Add a Column -- Simple, but only postpones the problem
        (b) Create a New Archive Page – Relatively simple, but some programming involved
        (c) Open up a Public FTP Directory -- Assuming this could be made secure, this might be the simplest solution to provide a place to view all old DM Newsletters. The only administrative work is publishing the newsletters to the server folder.
Those are my thoughts. Please provide yours.

Thanks,
Trim

I strongly suspect item #2 will be taken care of without any action, but the Archive Page won't link to them.

Item #1 is an issue that is unlikely to be resolved

i have nothing of value to add other than to say i think it's great that you're into the history of the game and interested in improving the way we record and access that information. i appreciate the fact that you're willing to put in the time and effort.
Very Happy

I think Bubba put it far better than we would have, so "echo that".

Glad to see someone other than me that loves looking at the history of the arenas. I have the newsletters for all 720 turns of Aruak City and believe me it creates a big pile. I'm sure they won't be able to add any old turns to the site but at least they have some years on hand.

Dartor, we acknowledge and honor you as The Great Historian of The Heart And Soul Of Andoria, Aruak City.

Kudos.

This is something on my backburner -- we do have a lot of very old newsletters in paper copy only (need to get a scanner and find some office kid doing nothing to do the scanning) and also most newsletters digitally from 1991 on. Eventually, we will get them uploaded. Right now we're moving web servers so I don't want to make any major changes.

And changing the max turn number is trivial. Razz

You may be interested in the list I started compiling of "gaps" and "missing" archived newsletters. It may be a couple weeks to pull it together, but it might give you something you could hand over to that intern. If this would be useful, I'd be happy to complete it. I find it very satisfying to help improve things (it's part of my job and personality).
