It was a dark and stormy night. Snow was coming down horizontally, driven by a
bitter wind. Not a night for man nor beast to be out in. Nestor Khan, the Dark
Champion from the Dark Arena, liked it that way. He was not, after all, either a man
or a beast, and the weather of the mortal world was as nothing to him. On a night
like this, with no one to see, he could be himself: fangs, claws, glowing red eyes.
He could not do that by day. It got old being mistaken for a manager, but no manager
would be out tonight, either. No, this night was his, and he was going to wake the
dead.
The cemetery he wanted was a mile beyond the edge of the town, a forlorn patch
of ground with a few scraggly trees, leafless now, and fewer tombstones. Most
people--and others--buried here were consigned to oblivion, memory of them cast to
the winds, for good reasons. But the place he wanted had an actual, though small,
mausoleum. Not a RESTING place, he laughed and flames flickered around his mouth,
but a place of... detainment for a dangerous spirit. He laid his hand over the door-
seal, and it burst and fell away.
"Who disturbs me?" The demand was immediate, though not spoken with words. The
spirit had no flesh left to shape air into words. "Speak before I slay you, foolish
mortal!"
"It is I, Nestor Khan, and you could not slay me with all your living power, so
how could you do it now?"
"Oh. You. What do you want, then? You never come just to talk to me, relieve
the tedium of my eternity. Always you want something."
"So I do," the demon agreed. "Names, dates, details, old revenant. Tell me
about the Covenant of Skulls."
There was a silence. "That is very old. None live now who were party to it,
and the last of their heirs--"
"The last heir is behaving recklessly. Dabbling in spells that disturb Gates
and Borders."
"The Grey Witch does that," the spirit said.
"Not in Jhelum, she doesn't. And not these Gates, these Borders. I will not
have it here."
"Then stop it. You are not without power." If a disembodied spirit could sound
sarcastic, bitter, this one did.
"The heir is drawing on the powers that were sealed into the Covenant. It was a
well-constructed spell, and I cannot find so much as a crack of entry."
"Why should I tell you these things? Whatever is done will not affect ME. I am
beyond the reach of--"
The Dark Champion made a gesture, a sound that was not a human word. The spirit
shrieked. "You are not beyond MY reach."
"I will tell you, then, but it will do you no good. Only a mortal can touch the
seal-points."
"I can find mortals. There are enough of them in the arenas even now."

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, warriors of JHELUM! Once again I've been called out of retirement
for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. What's with FLUFFY? He actually
beat DOGS OF WAR's ROSIE RIVETTER, and walked away with 16 more points from the
fight. Laughs were big at PEARL JAM while they watched BETTERMAN clobber SPIKE
JONES. He lost 6 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Har
har har! Did STONE GOSSARD wimp out, or just get lazy? Anyway, he's not Duelmaster
anymore. I can barely restrain my enthusiam for PEARL JAM's outstanding member,
Duelmaster GARDEN. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about
your fellow fighters? Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel.
Warriors of JHELUM unite. You have only your games to lose! How long have I
been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? The
end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! I don't want to
overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen
