BOURBON and POLITICS
A CONSORTIUM JOURNEY
With all the bourbon and political naming in the arenas of late, I thought this true
life story might be pertinent and interesting. From the life and living of... The
Consortium.
Back in 1968, my Dad, an over-the-road truck driver for Can-Tex (sewer pipe) and a
County Commissioner (Perry County, IN), asked me to take off a election day owhile in
college and come home and help out with the elections. Both Mom and Dad were working
the polls and needed me to travel out into the countryside and pick up Democratic
voters who were unable to get to the polls. (like no car, old age, poor health, well-
inebriated, etc) One must realize that Perry County was solidly Democrat, as was my
family, with Mom, VP of County Democratic Party, and Dad, Commissioner, also being
State Voting Representatives for Presidential Elections. My job was to pick up these
voters, bring them to the polls to vote; take them home and give them a half-pint
bottle of Yellowstone for their reward. I guess I picked up 20 or so voters, and then
delivered the rest of the large box of half-pints to our basement at home.
This was my first time to vote, and in the presidential election I voted straight
Democrat which included Hubert Humphrey for President (He lost to Nixon) and. Of
course, my Dad (Earl W. Smith) for County Commissioner reelection. (He won)
Between the next Presidential election, I finished my Engineering Degree;began working
as an Engineer for G.E. back in Perry County; got married; had a daughter (Jodi Ann);
obtained an M. .A.; moved to Fayetteville, N.C to work for a Black & Decker start-up;
and enlightenedly became a solid Conservative.
During the 1972 election, my wife's first to be able to vote, we cast our ballots
straight Republican. (Nixon was reelected) Several days after the election, a box was
delivered to our apartment in Fayetteville. It was addressed to six-month old Jodi,
from my Father. Inside were many Democratic items -- blow up donkeys, pins, ribbons,
etc -- from the campaign. There was also a simple hand-written letter:
*Dear Jodi, *
*I hope when you grow up, you are more intelligent than your father and your
mother.*
*Love, Grandpa*
The story does not, however, end there. Fast forward fifty years or so. My father had
passed away at 68, and my mother had just recently died at 91. My sister and I are
hosting an auction of all the items in our parents house and the large barn. (The home
and 20 acres of property had already been sold to a buyer waiting to take possession.)
As we went through the many items (some quite antique; my Mom and I in my youth had
been in every Book Club possible and owned several hundred books; Mom collected 200ish
dolls, some from many countries of my work travels) for auction, we came to the
clothes hamper just outside the upstairs bathroom, which held clean towels for
bathing. After lifting out the towels on top, we surprisingly discovered 27 half-pint
bottles of Yellowstone bourbon which must have been from the aftermath of that 1968
election. (Since alcohol could not be auctioned and neither my sister's family nor
mine drank, we donated them to the auctioneer. I wish, now, that I had been smarter
and retained them for myself. They may have a great asset for use by some of my
friends at our Face-To-Face events.)

Welcome to the arena, folks! Step up and grab a seat, keep a firm grip on your betting
slips, and keep your limbs inside the arena at all times! I am your host for this
day's spectacular spectacle of steel and screams. I am The Gamemaster, your smiling
stone host of the Masked Mayhem, the only contest where contestants may win fabulous
prizes or immediate dismemberment. Either way, the crowd loves it!
What a turn we had here in Kolact! Sparks flew, swords sang, blood pooled, it was
spectacular! Let's spin the wheel and see what prizes Fate handed out this week!
Today's big winner is none other than Bellyshaker, who shook the arena and rattled
poor Chrimson into defeat. Bellyshaker claims the throne with an impressive 17-6-1
record. If my applause meter is accurate, half the crowd loves him, and the other half
will be betting against him in two weeks.
In terms of the contest, the crowd scoreboard lights up for Yuppie Cookout, who are
grilling the competition with a blistering 20-6-2 record. Kiss My Axe is holding onto
the throne and chopping through the competition. Meanwhile, Shewish Bakery is proving
that pastries can be deadly, and yes, add three pounds to your cankles overnight! I
would add something witty about Pauly's team here, but I do not have the slightest
idea what he means by his team name!?!? Traveling musicians? A flock of patridges? All
I can say is, they are doing well in the contest, tied with Shewish Bakery. Making
their debut in the contest, Blizzard of Pain skates across the sands with a 5-0 turn.
Durex 2121 stands tall as the most avoided team. Nothing says tactical caution like
hiding behind an apple fritter, as Shewish Bakery avoided Studcraft's crew the most.
Whal Russ is our most challenged warrior. With no wins on the record, there is no
mystery to solve. Dektra saw an opportunity and took it, as he beat Whal Russ in a
three-minute challenge fight.
This was not an elimination round, but the morgue was so busy you would have thought
otherwise. I wanted to call it a "Mortality Scoreboard," but the censors said that was
insensitive. I'll try not to laugh when I pitch it to them again in two weeks. Okay,
okay, major highlights include Dynomyte killing Fortunata in a bloodfeud. Yes! These
are the type of fights I live for! I mean, I would live for it if I were technically
alive. Big Green Egg overcooked Shallow Sal. The Dark Arena was particularly
"enthusiastic" this cycle, claiming several gladiators. Ladies and gentlemen,
remember, in the Masked Mayhem, every contestant plays, but not every contestant gets
to leave.
Contestants, managers, bloodthirsty spectators, remember the rule of Masked Mayhem...
somewhere among the participating teams hides a secret champion, scoring bonus glory
for the clever manager who can keep his identity masked. Will you discover your
rival's hidden ace? Will your own champion survive long enough to matter? Tune in next

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
KOLACT brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. If Don Corleone's is buying drinks
for BAD CUKES' good turn, I'm afraid the place will be dry before long. A 5-0-0
makes for a big thirst. Oh, this is too good to be true! PHILANTHROGENTS 7 has
fallen to 16th place after going 1-4-0 this turn. Who's bragging now? Why not, I'm
having a good day, so I feel sorry for PRAETORIAN GUARD, who went 1-2-0 and dropped
11 into 27th. Here's my pity, for what it's worth. Now let's all watch COVEY II's
heads swell from their 4-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big
deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see SHMAX win a fight and gain 21
points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, SHMAX beat TRELL JR and TRELL JR lost 20 points. You're
breakin' my heart. Due to absence, and inability to defend the throne, BIALAR CRAIS
has lost the Title of Duelmaster. Start setting that alarm earlier! And it's out
with the old, in with the new, as BELLYSHAKER takes the Title and last week's bar tab
from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how
else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. KOLACT,
I am losing what little hope I had in you. DUREX 2121 the most avoided team? What
insult will suffice, I cannot say. And who led the way in this mass act of
cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was SHEWISH BAKERY. Ha ha ha ha!
WHAL RUSS was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM
insulted or feared? Heh, heh. Now look at this. BEAR CLAW challenged down 20
against PHOENIX GUARD's APPA. What a weasel! Question now is, will KOLACT accept
this sort of tacky behavior? BEAR CLAW beating APPA. The insult, the....yech! I
notice BELLYSHAKER challenging down 18 points to fight CHRIMSON, KISS MY AXE
doubtless has some rotten excuse for such an insult to honor. And sorry to say,
BELLYSHAKER overcame CHRIMSON, leaving a bad feeling with the crowd. I think
exploitive snob is the term I'm looking for. SOUL OF STONE was challenged by one of
PRAETORIAN GUARD's warriors this turn, with IGNUS FERRUM having a lead of 23 points
going into the fight. Ha ha aha ha aha ha!!! IGNUS FERRUM was was defeated by by
BRAIN SALAD SURGERY's warrior! Thank the gods for big favors! ha! Now look at
this. BODY BAGUETTE challenged down 26 against UGOTAB KITTEN ME's THE GREAT CATSBY.
What a weasel! And golly gee, BODY BAGUETTE overcame THE GREAT CATSBY. Aren't we
all surprised and impressed? I notice TENMAR THE GRIM challenging down 16 points to
fight STRANGER'S GRIP, TENACIOUS doubtless has some rotten excuse for such an insult
to honor. Question now is, will KOLACT accept this sort of tacky behavior? TENMAR
THE GRIM beating STRANGER'S GRIP. The insult, the....yech!
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. ORDO HERETICUS has cause to pause today,
as INQ ABRAM FEX was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of
moods, I'll wager. Let's see, 7-2-2. Pretty good record for a living warrior. A
sad one though, for a dead one. Such is the case for FORTUNATA of THE HOLY LEGION.
Tsk. Seriously now, is it really honorable for DYNOMYTE from THE RAZOR'S EDGE to
kill FORTUNATA and give THE HOLY LEGION the chance to bloodfeud? Mmmm, could be.
Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see DYNOMYTE and THE RAZOR'S
EDGE at Don Corleone's tonight celebrating their bloodfeud victory over FORTUNATA.
It's about time SHALLOW SAL got beat for picking on warriors like BIG GREEN EGG.
