                             Notes from the arena champ.

Campy, I read your reflections on the 1974 Dodgers with considerable amusement. A 
remarkable team, indeed. One hundred and two regular-season victories, a National 
League pennant, and a trip to the World Series. Unfortunately, the Oakland Athletics 
had other ideas, dispatching Los Angeles in five games to capture their third 
consecutive championship.

There is a lesson there, Campy. Regular season accomplishments are impressive, but 
history remembers who takes home the championship. You may have enjoyed your time at 
the plate, but when the decisive pitch arrived, you struck out.

Perhaps a more appropriate comparison is the 1988 World Series, when those same 
Dodgers returned the favor, defeating the heavily favored Athletics in five games. 
Fourteen years separated those encounters. Fortunately, I required considerably less 
time to settle our rematch. 

And what a fitting conclusion to your career in Kolact. Your final appearance upon 
these sands, your last opportunity to defend the throne, and the warrior you had 
previously dismissed sends you to the Isle with a defeat. You earned your immortality, 
Campy, but I claimed your crown.

My story, however, began long before you and I crossed swords.

I was created following the death of Excidium, a fellow Guardsman whose blood was 
spilled upon the sands. My manager, Shocking Toad, did not seek merely another warrior 
to fill an empty position. He sought an avenger. Thus, I was given the name Vindex, a 
declaration of purpose and a reminder that the Praetorian Guard neither forgets its 
fallen nor accepts defeat as its final judgment.

My career began with eight consecutive victories. Confidence became arrogance, and 
arrogance invited correction. The arena delivered that correction repeatedly. I 
discovered that skill alone does not guarantee victory, that initiative can be stolen, 
and that even a capable Lunger can find herself helpless against a superior opponent.

Eleven defeats in sixteen fights followed those first eight victories. Some 
undoubtedly concluded that my promise had evaporated. Others might have consigned me 
to the Dark Arena. Shocking Toad, however, recognized that the lessons were not yet 
complete.

I continued to fight, to learn, and to adapt.

When we met for the final time in Kolact, you attacked first, Campy, but I was 
prepared. Your spear found empty air, my longsword found its mark, and the 
championship was decided. No excuses, no disputed calls, no extra innings required.

Now the Commission has extended its invitation to the Isle of the Eye. I depart Kolact 
with eighteen victories, thirteen defeats, and the Duelmaster's crown. My record is 
imperfect, but my purpose has been fulfilled.

Excidium, wherever fallen warriors gather, know that your name has not been forgotten. 
The warrior created to avenge you has earned her place among the immortals.

To those remaining in Kolact, remember that victory teaches confidence, defeat teaches 
wisdom, and perseverance determines which lesson ultimately matters.

And Campy, congratulations on your graduation. We now depart for the same Isle, though 
our final memories of Kolact will be rather different. Yours will be of surrendering 
the throne. Mine will be of taking it. 

Perhaps we shall meet again among the immortals. After all, the 1974 Athletics and 
1988 Dodgers demonstrated that even champions occasionally require a rematch.

     Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport.  
I doubt KOLACT will ever be the same.  It seems the training can make the difference, 
as NEON DIAMONDS is pushed out of top team by STEEL BLADES, who came from 2nd with a 
3-2-1 this turn.  ANQABOOT stable has parlayed this turn's 1-0-0 into a 4 space move 
up the rankings.  This brings them up to 6th place.  Good work, guys!  And let's see, 
ISICABUCABU fought MAXIMUS THRAX and gained 15 points and contributed to ANQABOOT's 
1-0-0.  MAXIMUS THRAX has lost to ISICABUCABU, falling 14 points, while helping make 
PRAETORIAN GUARD a 2-3-1 turn.  This turn VALERIA VINDEX Dark Arena Challenged 
SPYMASTER in what was KOLACT's Title bout.  Defending hers title for another turn, 
VALERIA VINDEX kept DARK ARENA's warrior, SPYMASTER, from claiming the throne.  Can 
someone confirm a rumor for me?  I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do 
dishes at Don Corleone's until they win.  Maybe?   
     I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling.  A basher 
friend of mine assures me this is true.  I also notice that the PRAETORIAN GUARD 
stable was the most avoided team this turn.  Come on KOLACT, what are you afraid of?  
And avoiding PRAETORIAN GUARD more than any other team we find KON.  KOLACT, are we 
going to accept, or respect this sort of thing?  The most challenged warrior this 
turn was STEEL BLADES' warrior CARBON FIBRE.  More fighters challenged it than 
challenged the Duelmaster!  In a fit of brilliance or of stupidity (hard to say 
sometimes), AELIUS FALCO challenged CORROSION today, facing a 31 difference in 
recognition.  And though AELIUS FALCO lost to CORROSION, the valiant attempt earned 
him 1 worth of recognition.  Foolhardiness can sometimes pay.   
     The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.  
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed.  The grave that PRAETORIAN GUARD had 
dug for VALERIA VINDEX may yet be filled with the body of SPYMASTER.  Seldom are the 
likes of this to be seen.  VALERIA VINDEX lives still!  STEEL BLADES, with any luck 
PRAETORIAN GUARD will successfully bloodfeud CORROSION for killing such a warrior as 
AELIUS FALCO.  Have a little decency, will ya?  Is it really true that KOLACT has 
more dishwashers per capita that fighters?  Just thought I'd ask...   
     Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the 
sweetest.  Always good to rest in KOLACT, but never good to wear out my welcome.
