TEAM SPOTLIGHT
COVEY II
The city of Kolact, located on the island of the same name, lay shrouded in fog. Well
past midnight, the city slumbered. Well, not the whole city. Pauly trudged along a
damp cobblestone street. He had only just arrived to the city earlier that day and had
gone straight to the Covey II stablehouse to get caught up on how the contest was
going. Sure, showing up after 9 turns of a 12 turn contest was a bold move for a
manager, but Pauly was a bold guy. Besides, he found a hands-off approach to be best.
The warriors he picked knew what they were doing and could manage themselves. Any
input from Pauly could only screw things up. To Pauly, managing stables of warriors
all across Alastari was just a means to an end. The gold he earned from betting on
fights and selling merch outside the arenas had made Pauly a wealthy man. He in turn
used his wealth to fund various ventures and schemes. The latest of which was
establishing a shipping route directly between Kolact and the island of Aradi far to
the north. Aradi was a strange place, but had many unique resources not found
anywhere else. The chief resource being scrod of course. Pauly was going to bring
scrod to the world, starting with Kolact. You could do many things with scrod. It was
a very diverse fish. However, this isn't a TOGS spotlight, so we won't get into that.
So as it turns out, getting caught up had taken longer than expected, as apparently
the boys at Covey II had been doing quite well. What Pauly thought would be a quick hi
and bye, ended up being hours of his crew giving him the play by play of almost all
their fights. Which is how Pauly found himself walking up to the 3 story stone
townhouse he had rented out so late it was almost morning. The whole street was lined
with the 3 story homes all snug up against the next. As Pauly got closer he noticed
something on the front door, but it was hard to make out much in the dense fog. Once
up to the door, Pauly froze. A dagger was pinning something to the door. It was a
teabag. Written on the teabag in what Pauly hoped was red ink, was a name... Pauly...
"Welcome to Kolact, Pauly", came a voice from behind him. Pauly turned and looked but
could just barely make out the homes across the street. "Having trouble seeing?", the
voice said. "Let me get my associate to help. Madwand? Would you please?" Suddenly the
fog started to writhe and push outward. In a matter of seconds, the area around Pauly
and the adjacent buildings was completely clear. The fog had been pushed outward and
condensed until it looked like they were inside a bubble. The fog seemed to glow with
an unnatural light giving Pauly a clear view of his surroundings. Looking up, he saw
robed and hooded figures standing on the third floor balcony. The one standing on the
far right held aloft a wand of some sort. Pauly thought that must be Madwand. He had
never met him, and only knew he was from the mainland, somewhere far to the north. He
always wondered about his name. Was he insane or angry? Pauly had a sinking feeling he
was about to find out. On the far left was the only man not wearing robes or hiding
his face. He wore plain clothing and was the most ordinary looking person Pauly had
ever seen. He just stood there completely motionless, his unblinking gaze locked on
Pauly. Six other men stood in between. One of them lowered his hood. Pauly recognized
him instantly and realized this was also the voice he was hearing. Riff Raff.
"Pauly, Pauly, Pauly," Riff Raff said, shaking his head. "I'm afraid you've been
TEABAGGED. Which means only one thing... DEATH!"
"Can't we talk about this," asked Pauly. "What did I even do!?"
"Wha... What did you do?!", Riff Raff sputtered incredulously. "You killed Kamoda Joe!
Not to mention Ingot, Cleocatra, and Wizard of Oz!"
"I didn't kill anyone!", yelled Pauly. "Hell. I only set foot on this island this
afternoon! Can't you just bloodfeud like a normal person?!"
"We have decided you're out of control and must be stopped," said Riff Raff.
"Again, I have nothing to do with what has happened on the sands! I just pay the
bills!" pleaded Pauly. "Besides, we've been making quite a lot of noise for this time
of the night. I'm sure the City Watch will be here any minute."
Riff Raff tilted back his head and roared with laughter. "TEABAG has friends in high
places and many of those friends owe us favors. I called in the others to help pull
the necessary strings. Suffice it to say, we won't be interrupted tonight." The
remaining hoods came down, revealing Obregon, Vlad, Mojo, Jerman, and Kharadmon. The
High Table of TEABAG. They all raised a glass filled with clear brown liquid high into
the air. They intoned solemnly as one. "It is the bourbon that binds us!" They all
took a healthy swig and instantly spit it out, hacking and coughing.
"What is this?!" cried Riff Raff. "Intern 31, what swill did you pour us!?" A timid
looking young man wearing a gray jumpsuit with the number 31 emblazoned on the right
side of his chest appeared on the balcony and held out an empty bottle for Riff Raff
to inspect. "Old Crow? Why would you bring us this trash? You know we only drink top
shelf!" Enraged, Riff Raff snatched the bottle from his hand and threw it at the
intern. It made a hollow sound as it bounced off the intern's forehead and flew over
the side of the balcony, landing in the street and bouncing a few times before coming
to a rest. "A plastic bottle?! Maybe that should have been a clue that this wasn't a
good choice?! You're fired!!" The intern turned sobbing and ran back into the
building. "Quickly gentlemen, emergency flasks!", said Riff Raff. All six of them
produced a small flask from up their sleeves, took a quick swig and sighed with
relief.
Pauly was very confused. He looked at the other two people on the balcony. Madwand
still stood with his wand held high, sweat beading on his forehead. Apparently he had
to maintain his concentration to keep the fog back. The other very ordinary looking
man was still just standing there, motionless, staring at Pauly. "Hey Riff?", asked
Pauly, "Before you proceed with trying to murder me, who's that guy?" Pauly pointed at
the motionless man on the balcony.
"That's JAFO," replied Riff Raff. "He is here to see vengeance exacted for
Cleocatra!... I think... I actually didn't invite him. He was just standing there when
we got here."
"Okay...," said Pauly. "Well, this has been fun, but I don't think I'm gonna stick
around, for whatever it is you've got planned." Pauly turned to run up the street,
when dozens of people stepped through the wall of fog, completely blocking the street.
They all wore gray jumpsuits with numbers on the chest. And they were all holding
clubs and axes of various shapes and sizes. More TEABAG interns. "You're going to make
your interns do your dirty work!?" yelled Pauly.
"That's what interns are for!" bellowed Riff Raff. He and the rest of the TEABAG High
Table laughed hysterically. "But in this moment, they are just there to keep you from
escaping. The final member of our vengeance pact has demanded first blood. He, um,
also wants to keep your body after. Don't ask, it will make sense in a minute. Turn
around and look upon your doom!!"
Pauly turned, sighing. This was all getting very exhausting. At first he saw nothing.
Then he noticed multi hued lights flashing in the fog coming up the street opposite
the intern blockade. The lights were getting brighter and brighter when a man stepped
through the fog wall into the clearing. He wore voluminous robes glowing, almost
humming, with electric light of various colors. The Neon Necromancer. "Time to reap
what you have sown," spoke the Neon Necromancer, coldly. "Death!" Pauly stood ready,
hand on his sword hilt, trying to look in every direction at once. Neon just stood
there, a vicious grin on his face. Finally, Pauly heard a squeaking sound and the
clatter of wheels on cobblestones. A cart being pulled by two TEABAG interns came into
view. In front of Neon, they upended the cart and unceremoniously dumped four bodies
onto the ground, before scurrying away with the wagon. "Now the dead will have their
revenge!" cried the Neon. "Arise, and serve me, the Neon Necromancer!" Hands held out
over the tangle of dead bodies, Neon became a blinding sun of neon colors. The light
faded, and as Pauly was blinking away the spots in his vision, he noticed the bodies
start to twitch. They rose to their feet. Two of them still looked almost alive.
Except for the hideous wound received from the death blow. The other two were
considerably more decayed. These must be the four warriors his men had killed. Neon
pointed a crooked finger at Pauly, "Kill him!" Pauly pulled his sword free, awaiting
the onslaught. He then continued to wait as the four newly raised zombies were moving
extremely slowly. Pauly, getting tired of waiting, walked up to one of the zombies. It
swung a fist at him, that looked like it was moving through jelly. Pauly easily
sidestepped and then brought his sword down, chopping off the arm. Pauly then
proceeded to walk around each zombie and chop them to pieces with his sword. It took
all of about 30 seconds. Pauly looked at Neon, who just stood there scratching his
head.
"What the hell was that, Neon?!" yelled Riff Raff. "What kind of necromancer are
you?!"
"Oh, that's really nice!", Neon yelled back. "Do you know how hard it is to raise the
dead? Oh, that's right. You don't because you can't do it! Next time you need a
necromancer, just go ahead and call someone else! I don't need this abuse! Neon out!"
With that, he threw something to the ground causing a small explosion, enveloping him
in neon smoke. When the smoke dissipated, the Neon Necromancer was gone.
Pauly looked back at Riff Raff. "How about we just call it a draw and all go to bed?"
"You wish! Interns, attack!", yelled Riff Raff. The interns raised their weapons with
a primal scream and charged towards Pauly.
Pauly ran, plunging through the wall of fog. As he ran, he could hear the thundering
footsteps of the TEABAG interns. Hoping the fog was hiding him, he ducked into an
alley between two buildings. As he walked deeper into the alley. He saw someone
standing there. A very ordinary looking man. It was, shockingly, JAFO. Just standing
there motionless, his unblinking gaze on Pauly. "JAFO, hey man," said Pauly. "Sorry
about Cleocatra, I really am." He held out his hand to shake. JAFO just stood there,
still as a statue. Pauly was waving his hands in front of JAFO, trying to get a
reaction, when he heard the interns run by without stopping, continuing on down the
street. Still unnerved by the non-descript observer, Pauly slowly walked back to the
main street. He took one more look back at JAFO. He was still in the same spot, not
having moved a muscle. Pauly shook his head and turned to make a run for the Covey II
stablehouse. He took about two steps when he came to a dead stop. Something was
holding him, as if he was completely encased in stone. Only his head was free to move.
Walking into his field of vision, was Madwand, holding his wand out, pointed at Pauly.
He didn't look angry. "Madwand, good to see you," stammered Pauly. "Can't we talk
about this?"
Madwand walked up close, his face inches from Pauly's and started to giggle. "Your
head will look good mounted on my wall. Don't worry, I'll have the taxidermist give
you a smile... well, maybe not. I think I might make a necklace with your teeth."
"So you are crazy," said Pauly.
Now Madwand looked angry. He pulled out a long bladed knife. "I'll be honest. This
might hurt a little." He giggled again as he raised the knife and then suddenly, he
went down in a heap. Pauly stumbled forward, as his body was released. Standing behind
Madwand was a man wearing a white apron and holding a large rolling pin in one hand.
In fact, he only had one hand. His other arm was completely missing. Pauly had never
met him, but it could be none other than the One Armed Baker. He was the
owner/operator of the Shewish Bakery. His bakers were also warriors and they were
currently at the top of the leader board.
"Thanks," said Pauly. "Although I'm surprised you helped as I'm one of the few teams
that might catch you in the contest."
"When I do win," OAB said confidently, "I want you to be alive to know that I beat
you."
"Well, whatever your reasons, I'm just glad you did what you did," said Pauly.
"You better get going. Also, I was never here," said OAB. With that, he brushed past
Pauly and disappeared into the fog. Pauly just shook his head, again, and made for the
Covey II stablehouse.
The rest of the journey was uneventful. He made it safely to the stablehouse and
relayed the strange events of the night to his warriors. Soon after he found himself
in one of the empty rooms. He hung up his cloak, and went to untie his coin purse from
his belt, but it was gone. Looking down, he noticed flour on his belt where the purse
had been tied. "It couldn't have been...", mumbled Pauly. "The One Armed Baker is a
bandit?"

Standing on a rooftop, looking down on the Covey II stablehouse, was an ordinary,
nondescript man. He was unmoving, unblinking. He was JAFO.
SPY REPORT
WELCOME CONTESTANTS AND SPECTATORS! You have entered Kolact and Turn 10 of the Masked
Mayhem Contest! Cue my applause and release the Glitter-Tossin' Goblins because I am
your host, The Gamemaster, master of ceremonies, keeper of scoreboards, and the only
golem in Alastari specifically enchanted to smile while announcing grievous bodily
harm.
Before we begin, let us acknowledge the reigning champion. Swan Artist remains
Duelmaster after turning aside a challenge from Ma Barker. Our champion's record now
stands at 18-2-1, and a graduation notice is in hand. Our arena darling's time is
coming to a close, who will leave us for the Isle after fighting next turn. You heard
me! The curtain is closing on one of Kolact's most consistent stars since the contest
began.
Every contestant knows, today's champion is tomorrow's retired celebrity signing
autographs to keep the candles burning. Now then, who's moving on up the rankings?
Step up and spin the grand wheel of success. Blizzard of Pain blew into the arena with
a purpose, and iced the competition with a 4-1 turn. They were joined by Kiss My Axe,
who chopped their way up the rankings with the same record. Misfit Toys ran only four
warriors this turn, but managed to gain the most recognition at 46 points. Ordo
Hereticus had the best turn at 4-1-1 but failed to chart on the upward-mobile teams,
perhaps due to Tyrus's loss costing them 17 recognition points.
What is behind Door #1? A giant pile of avoids! This week's most avoided team honor
goes to Yuppie Cookout. Does everyone else have the same questions as me about this
team? Where do they get their stock for all this grilling? The team members are
capable cooks, but also have a penchant for dismembering opponents. I have questions,
but will not pursue them because I'm a golem and do not eat your food. Pauly's Covey
II squad avoided them the most. Would this have something to do with the untimely
demise of Kamoda Joe last turn? Big Rock is the most challenged warrior. Darque has
decided on a rule change for the next contest thanks to the endless challenges being
directed at Jorja's passive squad.
I don't need to remind everyone, but I will: AFTER TODAY, YOU ONLY HAVE TWO TURNS
REMAINING IN THE CONTEST. Every point matters, every challenge matters, and every
victory could be the difference between success and obscurity. No pressure!

challenges continues to dominate the arena. Can anyone catch them before the end of
the contest? Swan Artist and Covery II are making a strong case, but Tripwire and Riff
Raff continue to dance in the upper echelons of the contest hierarchy.
