TEAM SPOTLIGHT

COVEY II

Pauly was lying in bed staring at the ceiling. Not sure if he had gotten any actual
sleep, he decided it was time to get up. He got dressed, still pondering the strange
events of the previous night. He crossed the room and opened the door. A dagger was
driven into the door pinning a Teabag to it. He looked nervously down the hallway but
saw no one. He examined the Teabag closely. No name in red ink this time, although it
did look like there was something written on it, though so small it was impossible to
decipher. It was then that Pauly noticed a magnifying glass lying on the floor. He
picked it up and held it in front of the Teabag.

"Pauly -- If you're reading this, you're alive. Good. It also means you have
amazing eyesight or you found the magnifying glass we left. I'd like to
apologize on behalf of the KPA (Kill Pauly Alliance). It was always meant to
be a temporary alliance, but although we did not achieve our goal, we have
disbanded. I may have overreacted. I had been drinking bourbon all day. You
know how when some people drink too much, they get happy or sad or want to
fight everyone? Turns out I get murderously vengeful. But hey, nobody's
perfect. As for Madwand, at the KPA planning meeting, one of the TEABAG
interns was serving him a very potent absinthe by mistake which caused him
to hallucinate. Don't worry, he's completely recovered from his psychotic
break. The Neon Necromancer didn't really care about getting revenge, he
just really likes to raise things from the dead. Finally, JAFO. I have no
idea what that dudes deal is. I would be wary. Anyways, in an effort to bury
the hatchet (metaphorically of course) Please come down to the Shewish
Bakery and I'll buy you breakfast. Sincerely -- Riff Raff"

Pauly lowered the magnifying glass and stared wonderingly. How the hell did he write
that small? Pauly shook his head and decided to make his way to the Shewish Bakery. He
wasn't one to turn down free food. Even if it was from someone who had tried to kill
him.

Pauly walked through the front door of the Shewish Bakery. It was a small building,
but had very high ceilings, as most of the bakers were Shewish Giants. Pauly also saw
the One Armed Baker himself behind the counter. He thought about confronting him about
the stolen coin purse, but decided to just call it even. He had saved his life after
all. Sitting at a table in the corner was Riff Raff, Neon, Madwand and JAFO. JAFO was
actually just standing behind Riff Raff, staring that unblinking gaze at Pauly.

"Hello Riff, Neon, Madwand, JAFO," Pauly said. After Pauly said JAFO the other three
managers followed Pauly's eyes and turned to look at JAFO. Neon and Madwands eyes
widened in surprise. Riff actually did a double take and spit out the coffee he was
drinking.

"Where the #&@$ did you come from?!", sputtered Riff Raff. JAFO just stood there
motionless, offering no response. Riff turned back to Pauly and shook like he just had
the chills. "Well, have a seat Pauly. Help yourself to some pastries and coffee. Pauly
did as instructed. He was impressed by the fare. OAB was as good a baker as he was a
manager apparently.

They all sat there and ate and drank and chatted about the manager life. Also,
shooting occasional uneasy glances at JAFO. Finally, Pauly stood to excuse himself,
thanking them for the meal. They all apologized a final time. Riff extended his hand
to Pauly saying, "No hard feelings?"

"That's what she said!"

Pauly turned and saw a satisfied looking Gentle Ben sitting at the table behind them.
"Finally," Gentle Ben said. "Do you realize how long I've been sitting here waiting
for a set up? I was ready to leave like an hour ago. Anyways, my work here is done."
With that, he stood up and left the bakery.

Pauly turned back to Riff and shook his hand. "We're cool. But I need to get going to
the docks, my first shipment of scrod should have arrived." As Pauly turned to leave
he noticed a spider crawling up his arm. He swatted it off, killing the spider. He got
to the door and when he looked back, Neon had bounded out of his chair and knelt over
the dead spider. His hands outstretched, electric lights bursting to life on his robes
he spoke " Rise! Rise and serve your new master, The Neon Necromancer!" A blinding
burst of light filled the bakery. When it faded, Pauly saw Neon holding the now undead
spider in the palm of his hand, a proud smile on his face.

"Dude, Neon," said Riff Raff, "You need help. Just because you CAN raise the dead,
doesn't mean you always SHOULD raise the dead."

"You're just jealous," snapped Neon, "And you still owe me an apology too, now that I
think about it. I should kill you and raise you from the dead just to teach you a
lesson."

"You dare threaten a member of the High Table of TEABAG!", roared Riff Raff, "Where
are my interns?!"

The arguing continued, Madwand, looking uncomfortable, twirled his wand and vanished.
JAFO just, well, you know. Pauly decided to let them work this out on their own and
left the bakery, heading towards the docks.

Pauly arrived at the docks, only to find more trouble waiting for him. As he
approached the Aradian ship, "Leg Warmer Lust" (Like I said, the ship was from Aradi
and built during the TOGS era, what did you expect?), he noticed the deck was occupied
by about a dozen very tall, well-muscled women. They were breaking barrels and dumping
the contents into the ocean.

"My scrod!", yelled Pauly and he ran towards the gangplank. As he approached,
something tripped him and he fell face first onto the dock. Pauly rolled into a
sitting position pulling a handkerchief from his coat and held it to his bloody nose.
Looking back, he noticed a fine wire running from a post on one side of the dock to a
post on the other, about shin high. Pauly heard someone chuckling and turned back to
see a man sitting on a crate across from the "Leg Warmer Lust". He hopped off the
crate and walked over to Pauly. He was a tall, thin man, dressed in a fine suit.

"I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself," said the man reaching out a hand to help
Pauly up. "They call me Tripwire."

Wow, thought Pauly, glancing back at the wire. This was all very on the nose. "I'm
guessing those ladies on the ship work for you?", asked Pauly. Tripwire nodded, a smug
grin on his face. "Where is the crew? Did you kill them?"

"Your crew is fine," replied Tripwire. "They are tied up in the hold of the ship. A
few bumps and bruises, but otherwise unharmed." He turned back as the last barrel was
dumped overboard and the large, imposing women made their way off the ship to come
stand behind Tripwire. "These are my warriors and trainees. I have certain..
abilities. I can create portals with my mind to different places, worlds, and beyond.
I brought these women from a place known as the Amazon. Impressive, aren't they?"

Pauly suddenly remembered that Tripwire was in the contest and was right behind him in
the standings. "Why did you dump my cargo? How is this supposed to help you pass me in
the standings? I don't get what you're trying to accomplish. Besides, you may be
facing charges after I notify the Dockmaster about this."

Tripwire laughed. "I told you, I have abilities. Special ones. Tell the Dockmaster if
you wish, it will do you no good. And as far as the contest goes, this has nothing to
do with the contest. You're trying to establish a shipping company. I too have
recently established a shipping company. Of Wolf and Amazon will ship anything and
everything to every corner of Alastari. Even Scrod, once I'm able to get access to
Aradi. Something strange is going on there and I'm unable to travel there, but I
digress. I will crush any competition, starting with your little operation, by any
means necessary. But hey, it was great to meet you, and good luck with the rest of the
competition." With that Tripwire made his way back into the city trailed by his
entourage of warrior women.

Pauly watched them go, wondering how he was going to figure this one out. He would not
give up his dream of bringing Scrod to the masses. One thing he could do was go check
on the crew. And also see if the secret compartment in the hold had stayed a secret...

Standing between stacks of crates next to a dockside warehouse, was JAFO, motionless
as aways. Walking up behind him was an elderly man. He walked slowly but steadily and
with purpose. As a reached JAFO, he put his hand on the back of JAFOs head. JAFO's
eyes began to glow, as did the old mans. Suddenly, the old man's eyes started blinking
rapidly. He spoke to himself as it continued, "Ah yes, he is the one, Pauly. Trying to
bring things from Aradi he shouldn't. Tripwire, dumped the scrod, I see, but the real
problem is still on the ship. The Creepster is right: he must be dealt with."

Notes from the arena champ.

Hello my fellow combatants. I have been so focused on fighting in this
contest, that I haven't had the time to address you, my adoring fans.
It's been quite a ride, and I wish I could see this contest through to
the end, but when Greywand calls, you must answer. In order to do
everything I can to help my team finish strong, I have challenged the
Dark Arena, trying to get all the points I can on my final turn. I am,
as I'm sure most of you know, the COVEY II Masked Warrior. Am I the
best of the best? Probably. I'm sure you're all dying to know more
about me. Well, here you go:

SPY REPORT

Greetings, contestants and spectators! Welcome back to the Masked Mayhem of Kolact,
where fortunes have been won, dreams have been shattered, and more than a few stables
have opted for closed casket ceremonies! Let's take a look at all the action in the
penultimate turn of our contest. That's right, folks! There is only one turn remaining
in the mayhem!

The spotlight this turn is fixed upon Unknown, who took over the Duelmaster's throne
from our departing Lord Protector Swan Artist. Swan challenged the Dark Arena in
search of those sweet points for the Mayhem, butchering Shewish Giant and leaving a
bloody trail from Kolact to the Isle of the Eye. Unknown flattened Six Summers and
edged out Inq Greyfax for the throne. Unknown looks every bit a champion heading into
our grand finale.

The race behind him, however, is tighter than a goblin's coin purse. Inq Greyfax, Big
Green Egg, Bear Claw, Salmon Leap, and several others are refusing to fade quietly
into the closing curtain. I'm looking forward to a spectacular finish from all the
contestants in a few weeks.

Speaking of standout performances, I must mention Pulper of the Rippers! A tremendous
upset over Ma Barker earned one of the biggest point gains of the turn, reminding
everyone that the standings are never truly safe until the final gong sounds. Among
the teams, though, Shewish Bakery continues serving victory by the dozen, once again
holding the top team spot. Ordo Hereticus and Tenacious are doing their best to keep
up the pressure. Further down the rankings, Philanthrogents 7 made one of the biggest
climbs of the turn, proving that persistence can sometimes be just as valuable as
perfection.

The sands were anything but gentle this cycle. Cruel Intentions lost two warriors as
Tala and Rampage fell permanently from the arena rosters. The Dark Arena collected its
grim harvest by torchlight, too. As always, Kolact reminds us daily that every duel
carries a price.

And now, contestants, the announcement you've all been waiting for! There is only ONE
TURN LEFT in the Masked Mayhem! Perhaps you've been battling for the championship from
the very beginning. Perhaps your hopes of claiming the big prize slipped away
somewhere around Turn 4 after the unfortunate loss of a Masked Champion. Either way...
DON'T STOP NOW!

Every fight still matters. Final standings can shift. If you don't believe that, then
remember that personal rivalries can be settled. Ah, see, now I have some of your
attention. Recognition can still be earned, and the chance to make the advanced games
lingers.

For those stalwart managers who answered the bell all twelve turns, your dedication
will not go unnoticed. The contest may crown a champion, but remember that Endurance
Prizes await every manager who stayed from the opening turn through the finale.
Showing up deserves its own type of recognition, and this old game host loves
rewarding perseverance.

Sharpen the blades and tighten the straps! Whisper words of encouragement or give
subtle threats under your breath. Whatever keeps you engaged! Next, the curtain falls.
The wheel stops spinning. The masks come off! And someone will leave Kolact as the
champion of Masked Mayhem.

Until then, keep those challenges coming! Keep those gladiators fighting! And let's
finish with the most epic closing turn Kolact has ever witnessed!
