DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
The challenge came as challenges often do -- unexpectedly, yet not unwelcome. Bialar
Crais of the Farscape stable stepped into the arena with purpose. I had watched him
from my throne, seen the way he moved through his fights, the determination carved
into every strike. When he called me out, there was respect in it. Not the desperate
hunger of someone grasping for glory, but the measured confidence of a warrior who
believed himself ready.
He was not ready.
The fight lasted three minutes. I gave him no quarter, no moment to settle into his
rhythm. Steel sang against steel, and in the end, only one of us walked away with the
Duelmaster title. Crais fought well - he is no fool, no pretender.
What came after the victory surprised even me.
Representatives of the Gladiatorial Commission approached as I cleaned my blade. Their
words were formal, weighted with ceremony. For the skill I have demonstrated week
after week, they bestowed upon me the title of Lord Protector. More than that -- they
granted me the right to journey to the Isle of the Eye, that legendary place where
only the finest warriors are called to test themselves against the greatest champions
from every arena across Alastari.
I accepted, though the words felt strange on my tongue. Lord Protector. I am no lord.
I am a warrior who has held a throne through steel and will. But titles are the
Commission's business, not mine. What matters is what comes next.
The Isle awaits, and I will answer its call. But my time in Kolact is not yet
finished. There is one last fight to be won here. Another fight to teach me something
-- about myself, about the art of combat, about what it means to hold a position when
everyone around you wants to take it from you.
To Bialar Crais: you fought with honor. Return to the sands, sharpen your edge, and
perhaps we will meet again.
To those who would follow in his footsteps: understand what you face before you issue
your challenge. The throne is not claimed through ambition alone.
The arena continues to turn. The crowd continues to roar. And I continue to stand,
blade in hand, until someone proves themselves worthy.

SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of KOLACT! Once again I've been called out of retirement
for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Bein' on top is great while it
lasts, WAR HAWKS. But how many friends do you have now? Up 'n down. Up 'n down.
Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, YUPPIE COOKOUT's
7th moved them up to 5-0-0 place. Some people say I ramble too much, I don't say
anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well PHILANTHROGENTS 7 moved up 5,
to 2nd. Well, RED DWARF, 3-2-0 isn't a complete rout. But the Duelmaster has
nothing to fear from you guys! What's with JOHN COUGAR? He actually beat RIPPERS'
JOBY, and walked away with 23 more points from the fight. Major screwup at ROGUES
GALLERY. MORIARTY lost 16 points to CLIMOPE. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe
MORIARTY will provide more easy wins... JOTHEE was reminded on the sands why HARLUNE
is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear
some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of
practive, SHEWISH BAKERY! The bums at BAD CUKES couldn't face the challenges from
SHEWISH BAKERY! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, SELENA! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you.
Maybe FARSCAPE's BIALAR CRAIS is one of those guys who likes pain, or something.
That's what he'll get next week, after challenging up 30 to DYNOMYTE. Sometimes what
you expect to do (like in the fights) doesn't expect to turn out like you thought.
BIALAR CRAIS won victory over DYNOMYTE. It don't make sense. Fighting is a better
craft than farming, SPONGE, but you have to pay your dues. Being challenged by
CASSIUS VARUS, 22 points above you, is dues. CASSIUS VARUS overcame SPONGE. I bet
CASSIUS VARUS could beat two-year-olds, too. Well, THE RAZOR'S EDGE knows who to set
their sights on. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that
TENDRA WHITEHOT gets in. She fights people like HAND OF DARKNESS, 9 points below. I
thought TENDRA WHITEHOT showed great skill and promise when she subdued HAND OF
DARKNESS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? ELEPHANT FORGOT was plum wore out after MA BARKER pounded 'im
silly in a Bloodfeud. TOTEMIC IMMORTALS'll have to get a little better before going
after MA BARKER again! Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You
young rapscallions, take note!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
