TEAM SPOTLIGHT
COVEY II
It was late on Saturday night. Pauly sat staring at his computer screen. He realized
he should have at least started writing his spotlight earlier in the week, as he was
flying to Alaska in the morning and would not be able to work on it. Luckily, Pauly
thrived under pressure. What you are about to read, will surely be considered a
literary masterpiece. We pick up, right where we left off...
**************************************************************************************
Pauly walked through the now empty hold of his ship, "Leg Warmer Lust". He walked up
to a bench built-in to the wall. He was relieved to see it still seemed intact. He
popped off one of the planks, reached inside, and pulled out a scrod skin bag. He
opened it, and breathed a sigh of relief. He reached in and pulled out a large conch
shell. He turned it over in his hands, inspecting it. He could see old snot stains on
it, clearly marking this for what it was. The FONZ Conch Shell. If sounded by a member
of the FONZ, all FONZ would hear it, anywhere in existence, and come to the sounder
without fail. Even now, with the non-alliance taking its mission statement a bit too
far, by actually no longer existing, Pauly was sure it would work. Pauly didn't know
why he had it brought here. He just knew someday, he would need to sound it. He
dropped it back in the scrod skin bag and made his way off the ship. As he was walking
down the gangplank, he saw a stooped old man standing on the dock looking up at him.
"Hello, Pauly," the old man said, "I'll need you to hand over that bag and its
contents."
"Why exactly would I do that?", asked Pauly, "Also, who are you and how do you even
know what this is?"
"You can call me Mr. C," said the old man. He wore a friendly grin, and his eyes
twinkled with the surety that he would get exactly what he wanted. "As for how I know,
and why you should give it to me, the answer to both those questions is the same. WE,
are the Consortium."
Pauly felt a chill down his spine. The FONZ had always had friendly relations with the
Consortium, but they were also rivals. Perhaps the FONZ being gone was in their best
interest.
"I know of you," said Pauly, "And I know you are powerful. But, I see you are here
alone. No offense, but I don't think you can stop me. In fact, I think I've had enough
of this island. I'm heading straight for the city gates, find Laverne, and high tail
it outta here."
"Yes, Laverne," said Mr. C, "We found her roaming the eastern part of the island.
She's being held in a safe place."
"Held?", said Pauly, incredulously, "No one holds a Giant Demon Muskrat."
Mr. C sighed. "Pauly, Pauly, Pauly. You don't seem to understand who you're dealing
with. Let me enlighten you. You have increased your influence on Alastari recently,
but where you have tread for years, we have been for centuries. Your simple mind
cannot begin to fathom our reach and the depth of our resources. Yes, a Giant Demon
Muskrat, spawned in the wilds of Aradi, is a fearsome creature. But to the Consortium,
it's just another rat. So if you ever want to see your faithful companion again,
you'll hand over that shell. If that isn't enough motivation for you, I have some more
news that should sway you. We know of your teams and assets in Aruak City, Zensu,
North Fork and Lapur, just to name a few. Pandora, Oz, The Bloke, Mino, Kennelworth
and countless others are all poised to destroy everything you have built, if you don't
turn over that shell."
Pauly stood there stunned. He raised the bag to hand to Mr. C. He took the bag from
Pauly and spoke, "You made the right choice. It really is better for everyone. You
will find Laverne waiting for you outside the gates." He turned to leave, but stopped
and turned back when Pauly asked, "Why?"
"The FONZ is dangerous. You've seen what their influence did to Aradi. Scrod oil, nut
sacks, leg warmers. Talking livestock. Why do you think the Creepster took up
residence there? It's the only place in Alastari where no one thought he was crazy.
It's too late for Aradi, but We cannot, will not, allow that infection to spread to
the rest of Alastari. It's nothing personal, and We look forward to following your
career. We'll be watching." With that he turned and left, whistling a cheerful tune as
he walked back to the city.

About an hour later, Pauly found himself walking aimlessly through Kolact. He felt
lost. He was about ready to just head out of the city, hop on Laverne, and get outta
there, when someone called his name. "Hey Pauly!"
Pauly turned and saw Riff Raff walking towards him.
"I heard about what happened at the docks. That Mr. C took something from you. Well, I
have some information for you. His reasons for taking the item are not exactly what he
told you. He..."
"Wait, wait," interrupted Pauly, "How do you know so much about what happened?"
"We're #*&%ing TEABAG," said Riff, staring at Pauly as if that was all the explanation
that was needed.
"Anyways, like I was saying. They didn't take it to stop you from summoning the FONZ.
Well, that was a bonus for Them, but the real reason is that that conch shell is a
relic of unimaginable power. The Consortium has the means to twist this power to their
own ends. I don't know exactly what it is they are planning, but I do know where they
are taking it. Seam. I know Mino is still salty about the arena closing years ago and
getting kicked out of town. Even though it has re-opened, he's still holding a grudge.
I even heard he sent a threatening ad in the Seam Newsletter recently."
"Why are you telling me this?", asked Pauly. "What's in it for TEABAG?"
"We want what many want, but are too afraid to try. To take a bite out of the
Consortium pie," said Riff Raff, "Of course it would take a complete lunatic to take
them on openly and we believe you are that lunatic. I know you want that shell back.
Perhaps you can weaken Them, even momentarily, and that's when we'll make our move."
Pauly turned a steely eyed gaze at Riff. "Riff Raff, bourbon me." Riff produced a
small bottle of brown liquid from his coat pocket and handed it to Pauly, who in one
fluid motion, pulled the cork and downed the whole thing. He flipped the bottle back
to Riff, "Thanks, I needed that. Maybe I'll see you in Seam."
Pauly headed out the gates and walked towards a small copse of wind swept trees. As he
approached, a large shape emerged from the thicket. It was a muskrat the size of an
elephant, if not quite so tall. It had dark brown, thick fur. Its eyes were blood red
and black horns extended out from behind its ears curving forward with sharp points.
Pauly walked up and patted her on the nose, "Hey Laverne, glad you're ok. Time to get
outta here." Laverne squatted low and Pauly climbed up onto the custom saddle he had
made years ago. Laverne rose back up and turned a blood red eye toward Pauly. "To
Seam, girl. We've got a date with the Consortium." Laverne started forward at a trot,
then a gallop, and then a dead run. They were quickly approaching a cliff. Just as it
seemed like she would run them both over the edge to their deaths, she breathed out a
gout of flame. Where the flame ended, a large portal opened and Laverne leapt through,
the portal winking out behind them.

JAFO stood motionless at the edge of the treeline, looking towards the cliff that
Pauly and his beast just leapt off of. JAFO's eyes started glowing, relaying
information to the other JAFO units, spread all across Alastari, keeping the
Consortium apprised of events.

Next Time: Pauly and Laverne take on the Consortium in Seam. I hope they survive the
experience.
SPY REPORT
Greetings once again, ladies, gentlemen, masked marvels, and Riff Raff! I am your
ever-faithful host, The Gamemaster, and what a show we've witnessed this cycle! First
things first (and not the Duelmaster), let's have a thunderous round of applause for
One-Armed Bandit, who has officially claimed victory in the inaugural Mayhem contest
here in Kolact! Twelve turns ago, the masks went on, the identities vanished, and the
guessing began. Since then, we've watched triumphs, heartbreaks, surprise upsets, and
more conspiracy theories than a tavern full of retired gladiators.
To our champion: CONGRATULATIONS! Your consistency and clever management have earned
you the first Mayhem crown. To every manager who participated, thank you for making
this contest enjoyable. The masks are now off, but the stories will linger around
Kolact's taverns for months to come. Now, onto this week's OTHER arena news.
Megan Fox continues Beasts Within's remarkable rise, capturing the Duelmaster's throne
by defeating Unknown in the title bout. That's quite the way to introduce yourself as
champion before the inevitable graduation to the Isle. Cap Back continues to lead the
recognition race, while Ordo Hereticus claims the top team position after an
impressive run over the past three turns.
The bakery remains dangerously productive in Kolact, as Shewish Bakery has not slowed
down, even though its dominance in the contest was assured. Bear Claw delighed the
crowd in this week's favorite fight, while Buttered Troll and Animal Cracker kept the
fresh victories rolling in for the guild. While the smoke continues to rise from the
Shewish Bakery as the contest ends? The citizenry certainly hopes so!
Marching with purpose this turn, we have two teams that hold onto perfect records. The
Praetorian Guard marched proudly with a 5-0 effort and collected several important
victories. Valeria Vindex, the now-revealed champion of the guard, took down the
higher-ranked Pulper, while Moldavius continued to prove the value of experience to
the younger gladiators. Ordo Hereticus also marched. Wait, do Inquisitors march? Ordo
Hereticus stalked through Kolact's arena and collected 5 wins, too.
The Dark Arena crew was efficient and unforgiving this cycle, as we would expect. As
always, arena life is hard, and brave decisions to enter the games sometimes exact
steep consequences. Such is life beneath the shadow of Kolact! In other news, Neon
Diamonds was the most avoided team, while Yuppie Cookout ran away, complaining about
expensive tastes.
