In the mountains west of Fratsfa:
Lightning came down in a river of golden fire, hot and clean, and violet light
of the Folstrom's Chaos Gate turned black under the onslaught. But it didn't
shatter. Well, Fandil had hoped for the Gate to be destroyed, seared shut, but he
hadn't truly expected it to be so easy. Necessary, beyond necessary--the Folstrom
could not be allowed to return, but not easy. He squinted at the pillar of darkness
and contemplated his next move. To wait for the enemy to move and then counter, or
to attack? If it was just this one magician, he would wait, defend, allow his
opponent to tire... but if the Folstrom were involved, no, *because* the Folstrom
were involved, one look at that Chaos Gate was proof, he was not sure he dared play a
waiting game. On the other side of that Gate could be reinforcements beyond
counting, and he had only young Elosjon, competent but green still.
"Our strength is as the strength of ten, because our hearts are pure," he
muttered, but he was not convinced. Still, he would do what he could, and it would
be enough because it must. He tested his anchorage in the bedrock of the mountain;
it was secure. Indeed, he had a momentary image of the mountain as an old woman,
strong, resolute, standing beside him as an ally with spear and shield. Perhaps a
fancy, but an encouraging one.
He spared a glance for the storm that raged above the peak, not raining yet but
building an arsenal of lightning such as Fandil had never seen. The storm was still
his, or on his side, as the mountain was. With such allies, and Elosjon's young
courage was not negligible, he could--
Lightning descended again, and the spirit of the mountain rose to meet it, and
from that startling union there burst forth a dragon such as Fandil had never seen
before. Black as the stone, golden as the sky-fire, beautiful, powerful, and deadly.
And the hatred of dragons for the Folstrom was legendary.

Notes from the arena champ.
Duelmaster! Again! Make that four agains! I am on top where I belong. And I
am not shy like that little pipsqueak who was previously and improperly housed on
this pulpit. I am GOOD! I am so good that Lady Sheila called on me to be a Lord
Protector. My life story tells you why she wanted THE BEST.
I am 35-15 in the arena. Thirty-five times a lesser warrior fell at my feet.
Thirty-five! I was born a beautiful, mode 11-20-17-6-14-9-7 TP with good endurance
and great damage doing. A godling! Purple People Eater put me on a work-out plan to
grow me to 13-21-17-7-16-10-9 and I moved up to great endurance. A godling! I have
an advanced master in parry. A godling who needs nothing else! I am so highly
intelligent that I learn at a massive 0.94 skill per fight rate. A godling! My
favorite weapon could be anything as I am skilled with them all--0/27/0 with LG,
0/7/0 with ME, and 1/12/2 with LS. I don't really need any favorites, do I?
There are many managers who will be asking about cloning me. Only my manager,
Purple people Eater can authorize that. Meanwhile, I am off to the Isle where
everyone will put me on a pedestal, so I will not be allowed to fight much. Feel
free to bow at my feet and kiss my ring.

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ARUAK CITY games. DRAYTON FLASHSTONE caught the eye
of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested DOGMATIC and was
awarded 25 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, MINUTE
STEAK put down HARLINE FLETE, causing her to lose 9 points of recognition in the
process. Not for nothing has GREEN THUMB in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's
throne, and this week it's proven its combat skill yet again. Heed this! A seer has
warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just
remember...5 or 7!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. I saw one fighter that warriors
avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. IMMORTALS is feared. This much I
can say. Apparently the stalwarts of BULLDOGS are catching the bulk of jests down at
the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the arena
has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after
CINDERELLA MAN. Watch your back!
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Look no more for MILO PICKERING in the
arena or on the streets of ARUAK CITY. His fate was sealed in the Dark Arena.
Inevitable for one at 4-7-1. Perhaps even the strong cannot escape the vagaries of
this world. This week arena veteran DOGMATIC was slain, despite a 9-3-2 record.
Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the
brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in ARUAK CITY. Nice atmosphere you have here! Sadly warriors, now longer
can I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon!
