THE BASHER
A Management Inability Issue
Are Bashers misunderstood? Well, The Consortium Family certainly thinks so; therefore,
let's examine some facts and a few opinions. (Note: so does Hammer, so you may wish to
go back to Noblish Isle DM93 newsletter, turn 581 -"Another Look At Bashers"-, and
reread his comments.)
First, what, typically, is said about bashers? Sadly, I have heard these statements
all within the past month. "Don't make bashers." "Bashers are the worst style."
"Bashers are a no no, since they have a lousy weapon selection," "Anyone who makes a
basher ought to be shot!" "Bashers are worthless; they can't TC." "Bashers don't win
much." Enough of those discriminatory words, I say! Let's get to some facts.
Can bashers TC? Well, certainly; and they do. Bashers have TC'd 26+ times. (Yes, 26
and not zero as some imply.)
Once in the 1980's.
Fourteen times in the 1990's.
Four times in the 2000's.
Six times in the 2010's.
Once already in the 2020's.
Only two bashers (Piledriver and Baffle) have TC'd twice, hence twenty-four different
bashers have TC'd. Six of those TC's were as immortal warriors (One in Primus) and
twenty were as mortals in classes Rookie through Champions.
The Consortium knows first-hand that bashers can TC, as:

Skulk -- October 2003 Mailer
Bismuth Bender -- July 2011 Face-To-Face (Milwaukee)
have all done it. The Consortium is believed to be the first and only three-time
basher TCer. What did those three particular Consortium warriors have in common? None
were significantly blessed; all were godlingish designs; all had 17 Will (WT/WL =
21/17, 17/17, 21/17); and all were run by The Consortium Conglomerate.
Well, then, sure, those three TCs were sort-of godlings, but "normal" bashers cannot
win, can they?. Do they? Listen to this! The Consortium is running 18 non-sandbagger
bashers in current arenas and their overall arena record is 92-48-10, w/l = .657.
(They also have an overall tournament record of 53-37-4 = .589, with 2 TVs.)Let's
randomly select ten of those and examine the facts. (note: data as of Dec 15, 2024.)
The roll of the die selected the following 10, which had a total arena record of 51-
29-4 = .638. These are the designs:

What do these arena warriors have in common? All have high ST. (12+) Most have average
WL. (9 works!) None are small. (All but one are 9+ SZ. But The Consortium does run
some small bashers quite successfully also.) Most have low CN. (ranging from 4 to
10.)Almost all have 15 or 17 Wit. (Note: The 7-wit warrior was a final four at an FTF
earning a TV!) Speed was above average. The "average" of these warriors would make an
approximate 15-7-12-16-11-14-9 fighter.) So, bashers CAN fight and bashers CAN win!
A lot is said about "lousy basher weapon selection". And, in a way, that might be so.
One reason for that feeling may be that bashers are not suited for the scimitar (SC),
the weapon many (or most) consider the best weapon in the game. After all, bashers
don't slice and dice, they whack! And bashers are suited for the two weapons most feel
are the worst in the game -- the war flail (WF), commonly called the "whiffle", and
the morning star (MS). Here are the basher weapons: GA, GS, HL, MA, ML, MS, QS, WF,
WH, and the 3 shields. Some are hard to "qualify" for, as they require 15+ ST. (GS,
HL, ML) But when they hit, they hit hard! That strength need can be a disadvantage for
many designs, taking away points more desirable elsewhere in design. Two, as mentioned
above, are considered the worst in the game. (WF, MS) That leaves few to choose from,
and all but one "require" 13 ST to use suitably. But, The Consortium is a big user of
the quarterstaff (QS), war hammer (WH), and great axe (GA), and not at all adverse to
the mace (MA). He has also been known to often use, and win with, those three
regularly on styles other than bashers:
QS on strikers (ST)
WH on strikers (ST), total parries (TP) and pikers. (PS)
GA on wall-of-steels (WS)and slashers (SL)
So, maybe those weapons are not quite so bad as some managers think.
Which brings us back to the core of this spotlight. Bashers do get bashed and
discriminated against. And perhaps, as was outlined above, that is one large pile of
bashed cow patties. Enjoy bashers -- they get it done.

Masked Mayhem Approaches! Choose Your Champion? If You Dare!
Attention, warriors and managers of ALASTARI!
A new game begins--not of brute strength alone, but of wits, will, and whispers. The
Masked Mayhem contest begins on Turn 1046 in Kolact (DM 10)! Each manager will
secretly select one of their warriors to don the metaphorical mask and fight for glory
in the shadows.
Double points await your masked gladiator--but beware! No one will know who walks
masked among us until the contest ends... Will your foes guess your masked warrior and
try to bring them down? Or will you distract them with feints and fodder?
To get started, send your masked gladiator selection (include warrior name and ID#) to
Master Darque at darquesorcery@gmail.com before Turn 1046 (DUE February 9, 2026), and
submit TWO (2) Team Roll Up Certificates (contact RSI by email CSR@reality.com). Then,
make sure your masked fighter shows up each round--they can't earn double points if
they--re sitting in the infirmary. Team maintenance is recommended for all
participating teams.
Will your mystery fighter rise in blood-soaked triumph? Or fall in obscurity?
Let the shadows stir, and the games begin?

RULES and ENTRY GUIDELINES
A. CONTEST SCHEDULE
1. Duration: 12 turns
2. Start: Turn 1046 (due February 9, 2026)
3. End: Turn 1057 (due July 13, 2026)
4. Submissions Needed:
a. Masked Gladiators (your team champion) must be sent to Master Darque no later
than February 9, 2026. Teams may participate without declaring a champion,
but it will be impossible for these teams to receive the bonus modifier.

b. Submit two (2) Team Roll-Up Certificates to Master Darque via RSI CSR.
5. Reveal: Masked Gladiators will be revealed in the Turn 1057 newsletter.
B. SCORING
1. Win: +3
2. Kill: +1
3. Lose: -1
4. Death: -1
Masked Gladiators score X2 each turn. (e.g. Masked Gladiator wins and kills his
opponent, so he would earn (+3 Win + 1 Kill) x 2 = 8 points. Similarly, a Masked
Gladiator for another team died. His point total would be (-1 Lose + -1 Death) x 2 = -
4 points.)
C. ADDENDA
1. If a Masked Gladiator dies during the course of the contest, all is not lost!
Managers may designate a second Masked Gladiator; however, their scoring will only
offer a multiplier of 1.5 for the duration of the contest.
2. If a Masked Gladiator GRADUATES during the course of the contest, managers may
designate a second Masked Gladiator. The multiplier will be reduced to 1.5 for the
duration of the contest.
3. Teams may not designate more than TWO (2) Masked Gladiators during the course of
the contest.
4. Once a gladiator is chosen as the Masked Gladiator, managers may NOT alter their
selection unless the designated warrior dies or graduates.
5. Masked Mayhem is a SINGLE-MANAGER event. You do not need a partner or team to
participate. It is every man and woman for themselves!
6. Managers may only field ONE (1) team in the contest.
D. Prizes
1. Endurance Award - Every participating Team will receive one (1) +1 Bonus Potion for
participating in all 12 rounds of the contest and in at least 55 of the 60
scheduled fights.
In addition, teams that participate in ALL the scheduled 60 fights will receive a
single ZAP Potion.
2. First Place Manager (choose 3 from the following)
a. LIMITED Max Damage (one-time only; not perpetual; warrior must be from DM 10
and have participated in the contest)
b. Move a warrior from another team (that you own) to your DM 10 squad (warrior
must be NATURAL and UNMODIFIED; there must be an open spot via death/dark
arena or graduation, warrior must be alive)
c. Know Favorites (Initiates classed warrior or above)
d. Reroll one (1) warrior's favorite LEARN
e. Limited Immortality (one (1) resurrection following death in DM 10)
f. Two (2) +1 Skill Pots (added to warrior's base; no out of bound warriors)
g. Reroll one (1) warrior's Endurance (keeping the roll only if it improves)
3. Second Place Manager (choose 2 of the following)
a. LIMITED Max Damage (one-time only; not perpetual; warrior must be from DM 10
and have participated in the contest)

** Note: This contest will also be offered in DM 45. You may sign up for either or
both. DM 45 will be the same, but it will only run for 10 turns rather than 12.
SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of ARUAK CITY! Once again I've been called out of
retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Biff! Pow! ARUAK CITY
watched with glee as BULLDOGS got knocked off top spot by ANIMAL FARM! Up 'n down.
Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well,
CAPRICORNUS' 9th moved them up to 1-0-0 place. Some people say I ramble too much, I
don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well ANIMAL FARM moved up
1, to 1st. What's with SILVER TONGUE? He actually beat NAMED 03's VINK, and walked
away with 27 more points from the fight. Major screwup at NAMED 03. VINK lost 25
points to SILVER TONGUE. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe VINK will provide more
easy wins... ARUAK CITY has a Duelmaster who doesn't sit back and get lazy. He Dark
Arena Challenged DARK ARENA's WURM KIN (0-0-0), which should prove (ahem!)
interesting. The crowds were amazed this turn, as WURM KIN killed the Duelmaster,
HAL MOIR, leaving THE RED HAND in mourning. So now NO BULL gets to be ARUAK CITY's
Duelmaster. But what comes around goes around. Advice to fighters with a 1
will--give up fighting!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. ARUAK CITY thinks THE BLUES
and their 383-319-19 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... The
bums at BULLDOGS couldn't face the challenges from THE BLUES! No excuse for that!
How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, DODGER! Don't make
idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. NAPPER didn't quite know what to make
of a challenge he received from DEMETRIA TAYLOR of THE BLUES, who is 20 points below
him. DEMETRIA TAYLOR perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she won victory over
NAPPER and ended up with 82 recognition points. I hate going to the effort of
writing about the kind of fights that NO BULL gets in. He fights people like ADONIS,
13 points below. I thought NO BULL showed great skill and promise when he overcame
ADONIS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Warriors of ARUAK CITY unite. You have only your games to lose! Hmm... More
surprises must remain in store for me, if DA1 can return from the Dark Arena. How
long have I been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
