The Silent Place near Zuwayza:
Blackwind moved forward quietly, no need to announce his arrival with trumpets,
but he didn't sneak up on the necromancer. The man was clearly focused on his task
and not expecting any interruption. He'd lit half a dozen candles, short and thick,
with an unpleasant smell. His voice was a mutter of sounds not meant for a human's
throat, guttural and coughing. He was gesturing with a black blade that didn't
reflect light.
"An ambitious binding," Arhazul murmured in Blackwind's ear. "I do not believe
this person has the strength to hold it."
The gladiator drew his sword. "What will happen when I disrupt it?"
"That which he seeks to bind will be unrestrained." A pause. "It is unclear to
me what he grapples with, but I would suppose it is one of the creatures from within
the Silent Place. What else is there here?"
A thin cry of fear and pain. "No, no! Please don't make me do it again!"
The necromancer was holding a blade to the throat of a boy, naked and shivering
in the candlelight. Ten years old or so, Blackwind guessed. Skinny and terrified--
of the necromancer himself, but also of what he was expected to do. Crawl through
the opening into the Silent Place, probably, the gap in the fence was too narrow for
an adult to get through.
The necromancer snapped his fingers. The flame from one of the candles
elongated into a wire-thin whip of fire and lashed at the boy's bare legs. "Go," he
snarled, "or else die here to feed the spell!"
The boy wailed and edged closer to the iron bars of the fence. The candle-fire
lashed him again. He shrieked and crammed himself into the gap.
Blackwind stepped forward, sword up. "That's enough!"
The necromancer straightened and turned. Blackwind had a moment to think that
there was something WRONG about his face, and then the nearest candle flared into a
shield of flame between them. Then the mage turned back to his work, the pattern he
had scratched into the dirt, and began to chant again. And the boy was gone through
the gap in the fence.
Blackwind knew, as clearly as he sometimes knew it in an arena fight, that
things had slipped out of his control here. That if he didn't do something fast--
better a not-quite-right something than nothing at all--the situation would be
irretrievable. He took another half-step and drove his sword into the necromancer's
body.
Which offered no more resistance than mist.
He stumbled and went to one knee, then threw himself into a roll to the side as
the necromancer brought his black blade slashing downward.

Notes from the arena champ.
Well now, Experientia fought the Title and lost yet again. However, due to some
shrewd calculations on my part, and the open challenge from Darkface, my recognition
puts me on top. Not the way I'd prefer to claim the throne, but here I am.
I'm the last warrior of my stable who transferred from Aruak City. But I never
thought I'd live long enough to have a title run. My thanks go out to Liam the Goth
for some fine tips concerning my style. Now, let's see if I can hold on.
A final salute to all those fine warriors who have crossed my path. For better
or for worse, it is you all who have led me this far.

Well now, my LAST column did not post, despite baing sent in early. So THIS
one's going out earlier. First, I salute Seci, for allowing me to make my claim
truly legitimate. Perhaps I can even manage a winning record before I leave!
Much credit goes to Liam the Goth for the strategy tips that turned my career
around. I am the last member of my team who began that career in Arauk City, and if
Mino and Adie (Tankesh too) are listening, here's a big shout out!
A salute to all. No matter what, I won't be here long. So let's see if I can

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out MORYA to see
what's new. Like, STEEL AND SILK had to be so embarrassed when they got kicked off
#1 spot by EXPENSE ACCOUNT! Way to go EXPENSE ACCOUNT! RAG-TAG MISFITS like really
fought hard to move up to 10th from 13th. Way to go! One team deserves special
mention 'cause they moved up 0 after going 4-1-0. Keep it up, THE CONDEMNED! MVP
award for VALERIAN? STEEL AND SILK's proud of her after beating VENOMOUS CONCUBINE
and getting 20 points. Talk about yer big time losers! PATTE DE SAGUAR got smashed
by RENTAL CAR, and lost 14 points! Was that a tear I saw in CRICTOR UNGERER's eye,
as he took over Duelmastership? And wasn't SURGICAL fit to be tied! Who was the
wiseguy that said MORYA's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at Salty's Chowder House?
Don't look at me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? The warriors of EXPENSE ACCOUNT
must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something
that I don't? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are RAG-TAG MISFITS? EXPENSE ACCOUNT,
an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation!
Like, is DEAEL popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of MORYA! He's
got a 5-4-0, is that good?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. OTHER bloodfeuded (is that a word?)
QUINTUS MAXIMUS for revenge over some guy's bad fortune. Was it really worth it?
