The Broken Stick squatted just a few paces from the Duskblood River, squarely
within the Dockside district of Lapur. A lantern hung outside and illuminated a
hapless duelist holding a rapier or epee which, to the apparent dismay of the fop,
had been clearly broken in half, presumably by someone with a real weapon. A
holdover from the before the Chaos Wars, the Stick catered to seamen, gamblers,
thieves and thugs. It was known to have a mean fish stew which you could get for a
quarter mark and still have plenty of change left over for a couple of dark ales.
That didn't count the marks you might get if you caught the attention of the wrong
group of tavern goers.
While not an inherently hazardous area, per se, it can be noted that guards
generally didn't bother coming into Dockside at night and, when they did, they did so
in groups of no fewer than eight. They weren't much more inclined to patrol the area
during the day because of the rancid smell of rotten fish that permeated the area.
This was where the members of Almost Exactly typically congregated after the
arena matches. They had rushed over to the Stick to regroup directly from the
dilapidated Arena building following Twister's match with Red Mare. A tad early for
the rush, they successfully commandeered one of the nicer tables that sat next to the
window looking across the cobblestones of Dock Street to the dark river beyond. The
table struck a balance between being sufficiently far away from the cooking fire yet
close enough to the casks and kegs behind the bar to heighten the chance of being
successfully served.
The number of ales consumed by the team, like the number of patrons coming into
the Stick for an evenings's repast, was increasing. And the mood of the team, like
the makeup of those patrons filling nearly every table to capacity, was mixed. The
two wins and three losses in and of themselves were not the cause of unease; rather,
the source of two of those loses created emotions ranging from nonchalance to rampant
angst bordering on hysteria.
"This can't be good," Twister opined, shaking his head ruefully. "It's prolly a
good thing that our history has been lost, because this is likely a stain on it like
has never been seen. Pray Vlad doesn't hear about this."
"It's NOT good!" Hominy chirped up, stirring herself from the silent view out
the window to glare at Rat and Blood. Turning back to the window, she noticed a mutt
and an alley cat sneaking into the shelter of an old packing crate which lay
abandoned next to the building over. Turning to her teammates, she added, "It's part
of some larger evil I tell you. That's the only way something like this happens.
Mark my words."
"Consider them marked," LTG shrugged, grinning over at Blood, who was
noncommittal but wore a troubled expression. He looked her up and down. "What
happened to you, anyway?"
"I don't understand it," she replied. She looked around nervously. "It's not
supposed to happen that way," she protested to no one in particular.
"Come and see, there's a dead guy walking down the docks outside!" Hominy
exclaimed, nudging Maul Rat in the gut.
"That's probably just someone celebrating all-hallow's eve, Rat," LTG replied.
"It's that time of year."
"No, it actually looks like the remains of Sadistic Remorse," Twister commented,
turning to peer out the window.
"Isn't that one of our old dead guys? A mean striker? Sadistic Remorse?" Hominy
"Yup," Twister agreed, turning back to the table. "This doesn't look good. The
dead are rising from their graves!""
"Listen folks," Little Thin God suggested, "Just because we had a setback today
doesn't mean the end of the world." He glanced to take at Cricket to get her
measure. She was still fixated at the window.
"Now there's something you don't see every day," Hominy gasped, "Come and see,
there's someone on a huge white horse with a bow and a crown going up the road being
followed by someone on an equally huge red horse with a greatsword."
Twister began to rock back and forth on the bench muttering "Not good."
"And what do you have to say for yourself, Rat?" LTG had watched in amazement as
Maul Rat went down in the arena. Rat snorted and didn't reply but, after glancing at
Twister, looked a little more pale.
"Now there goes a black horse," added Hominy. "And the good looking fellow
astride it - he must be a merchant - is holding measuring scales. Come and see!"
Twister rocked more steadily, switching to a whispered mantra of "a measure of
wheat and three of barley, wheat and barley!" His eyes were not tightly shut.
"Wheat and barley you say, Twister? You want a beer?" LTG signaled over the
serving matron.
"Come and see, now there's someone on a big pale horse and, wow, does HE look
like death warmed over. Speaking of needing warmth, the guy behind him looks like
Hell and HE looks practically frozen over! "
As if on cue, the lead bard of the tavern band, which had been setting up since
before Almost Exactly got to the Stick, stepped to the edge of the stage and called
over to the matron, "Can I get a few beers for me, Don and the guys?"
"That's rich," a patron at another table snorted and called out. "I thought you
bums said you were never going to play together again! What happened, did you need
some laudanum money?"
"I don't know what happened," the bard, whose name happened to be Glen, replied
and went back to tuning his lute.
Mr. Twister, ignoring the new beer sitting beside him, began to twitch.
"Freezes over, freezes over," he mumbled.
"It's not that cold in here, Twister." Blood eyed her longtime teammate with
concern. "Come on, man. Buck up."
"Well, in fairness Blood, he has every right to be upset about yours and Maul's
performance today."
"Hey, we weren't the only two that lost today!" Blood looked meaningfully over
at Cricket, who was now gripping the window with two hands while looking out.
"Yes," LTG replied, "but Cricket didn't lose to Them. That's just embarrassing.
And the two of you both losing? Well, nothing good can come of that." Blood and
Rat, in unison, sighed, looked at each other and then down in their laps.
"Come see, guys," Cricket announced, with the slurred words that come with a
quantity of ale that far outweighed her tolerance. "There are now a bunch of people
in white robes walking by silently. They must be lost."
"Plains of hesitation! Rest for a season!" Twister was inconsolable, spittle
coming from his mouth as he swayed and talked to no one under his breath.
"Wow, it sure did get dark outside in a hurry," Hominy commented. "Ohhhh, some
trumpeters! Come and see!" At that moment, a rumbling was felt underfoot.
With a cry, Twister jumped up on the table. His was a horrible sight to behold,
with veins popping out of his neck and wild eyes which roamed independently until one
came to rest on each of Blood and Maul. "You've done it," he screamed. "You both
went and did the unheard of, the unthinkable, the unfathomable! You both lost to
those stupid Black Samurai and the acceptable fabric of reality couldn't handle
that!! And that has brought down the apocalypse! The end of the world is here and
it's all your faults!! Aiiighhhh!!!" Twister climbed down and began to cry, pulling
Little Thin God in for an end-of-the-world hug.
LTG slapped Twister once, hard. "You goober, get it together. You're
embarrassing me! The rumbling is just the kick drum of the band. Those people going
by outside are just part of the annual Hallow's Eve parade. Sadistic Remorse, and
other dead Almost Exactly warriors, are off to compete in the tourney of the undead!
No one cares if the Samurai happened to get lucky. There is no apocalypse, you
"There's not?" Twister asked, drawing a staggered breath.
"Oh, well then." Twister picked up his beer and dried his tears. "Let's go
watch the parade." The slasher, followed by the rest of his team, headed out to the
street without a second thought.
               *              *               *             *            *
They staggered towards home as a group late that evening, chancing to pass the
Lapurian cemetery on their way to the guildhouse.
"Wait, wait. Something I need to do," Hominy slurred, pulling on a couple
sleeves. "Hang on."
"Criminy, Cricket, we're almost home. You can't wait?"
"Not for this." She made her way into the burial ground. Many of the graves had
been disturbed by the hopeful dead heading off to the tourney; however, there was one
very fresh one undisturbed. She stood over it. Steam began to come from the ground.
"Aw, Cricket, you couldn't wait? We have a damn privy at the guildhouse,"
Twister called.
"Nope," she replied. Buttoning up, she pulled a marker from her cloak, added a
"D" to the tombstone, and then rejoined her team.

Well, shucks. Ain't this a kick in the pants?
You see, I suck. I was raised and trained when most of you were an itch in your
great, great, great grandpappy's breeches. I'm not sure if it was how much as a kid
I resembled Joe Fighter, one of the charter Almost Exactly warriors that made it to
the Isle, or what, but, like Joe Fighter, I suck. Hence my surprise at holding this
esteemed and lofty position. I was born in the days when no one said mode, base,
bonus, or burner.
I do want to focus on the ass-whupping I took to get here, if you'll humor me.
Between turns 743 and 745, I worked my way down The Taken roster like a cheap trollop
at a Frothingslosh guildhouse. I started by challenging Yezura, a bit above me, and
got my butt handed to me. So I went down to Shine, a peer, and got my butt handed to
me. By then I was pissed, so I went after Toadsmacker, who was ranked above me but
with half my fights. And, you guessed it, I got my butt handed to me. It should be
noted that in these three consecutive fights, I managed to find an opening to attack
--not hit, mind you, but attack--a grand total of ONE time. It should also be noted
that Shine shined damn near my entire fracking team, including Little Thin God, Blood
and myself.
Props, and thanks, to The Taken. Because I learned a lot. And I applied it.
As someone Vlad admires once put it, "The thing right now is to try and see how
long we can stay on top of the mountain. It's very narrow and windy up here." I'm
putting the over-under for my ass being in this seat at one cycle. I fully expect to
relinquish this throne this turn to Broadzilla, whom I am challenging, or the woman
with the magical tongue, Miley Virus, also of the Streetwalkers, who got her invite.
Grats, Miley!
Speaking of which, Vlad asked me to wish a hearty welcome back to our old friend
Regrettably, I can't fight Maul Rat though that would be fun. Presumably Risui
will bloodfeud Maul Rat, though that might be attributing too much of a sack to
Risui, so that leaves the Streetwalkers with the Throne next turn either way. I know
occasionally a champion will wind up getting a shot, but I'm not counting on that.
As Vlad's friend said, "Success can sometimes be just as frightening and
disconcerting as failure." So, I'll be happy to relinquish this throne to one more
worthy and await an invite and a fine retirement.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of LAPUR! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Warriors--remember that glory waits always
around the corner! Witness how this week WEIRD STUDENTS went 3-2-0 to move up 3 in
the rankings. BLOOD MAKES NOISE caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as she skillfully bested DANCES WITH RAIN and was awarded 13 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, BLOOD MAKES NOISE put down
DANCES WITH RAIN, causing her to lose 9 points of recognition in the process. The
city has turned out in honor of SHINE, for with his arena victory he may now lay
claim to the highest position in the city! No confirmation, but my sources claim
that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. My inside sources tell me that the
team to beat in LAPUR these days is THE TAKEN. At least, most blades in town are
looking to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was
that spent the better part of last week avoiding THE TAKEN. Indeed it was ALMOST
EXACTLY. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the
knowledge that many fighters are after SANDSTORM. Watch your back!
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune
but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in LAPUR as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

                                     PERSONAL ADS

All -- Vlad had too much cab and mailed our collective ads and team spot from last
turn off to Murska by mistake, so here they are from last turn. -- Almost Exactly

Black Samurai -- Let me read that last personal back to you: "1) Why did my warrior
get matched up with someone so high above them? 2) Why don't I ever get the benefit
of a matchup like that? 3) Here's another example, where my warrior was matched with
someone way below him." What's wrong with this picture? -- Vlad

Nekoda -- What did you put on that weapon? Grats on the win. -- Maul Rat

Bak -- The Gods, but that felt good! Gotta stop buying those shields at Walmart,
Bak. -- LTG

Neva -- That was the most fun I've had in a long time. Great fight, grats on the
win! -- Cricket

Risui -- There reaches a time when you just begin to feel sorry for someone. Someone
who just couldn't buy a win, has so much to learn and is likely one step away from
the Dark Arena. I let that cloud my judgment. In doing so, I feel I let you down by
artificially inflating your confidence with that win. For that, I apologize. I've
asked Maul Rat to fix your wagon, as he done so well in the past, while I concentrate
on NakedDuh. -- Regards, Blood

Red Mare -- Thank you for helping me stay about .500. Keeps the life expectation up,
dontcha know? -- Twister

New ads based on recent events and less cabernet:

Shine -- I'm as mystified as you are. But thanks for the seat! Next time, please
don't clip your toenails on my seat. -- MT

Nekoduh -- Heehee... Haha... *snort* *cough* *snicker* Hee hee... HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
You pusillanimous waste of bodily fluids. Points above me when you challenged: 13.
Fights above me: 18, over 2.5x mine. Feet of dirt you are now under: 6. Suck it.
"Nekoduh is rushed to the infirmary where he DIES, broken and alone." Ain't THAT the
truth. -- Maul Rat

RattaRisui -- Just bring that bloodfeud, chump. Line you up in a pretty little row
with Nekoduh and UsoTardo. -- Rat

Risui -- Nevermind, looks like Rat was busy fixing Nekoduh's wagon. -- Blood

Red Mare -- Thanks for the learns! -- LTG

Neva -- See my personal from last week, above. -- Hominy

Patty Cakes, Patty Cakes, look at her tan! Watch me beat her fast as I can! Poke
her and prod her and mark her with a B, and there will be enough for Cricket and me!
-- BMN

Stasis -- RIP -- Kathana

Shine -- We definitely wish you luck! -- the Cardow Hunters

Depravation -- ??? Why should it "be" something? It's the place where our tribe has
its main camp. We're the hunters from Cardow. Off to the east of here. -- Hunter

Shine -- Somehow, *I* was not surprised. It's too cold at the moment, and way too
damp, for much in the way of blowing sand. -- Sandstorm

Two-three, and we have to admit this is an improvement over last time! No standbys
for us, either, these were real wins. -- Red Mare, for the Cardow Hunters

Our congratulations to Miley Virus. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters

We salute the participants in the recent mail-in tourney with special nods for the
tourney victors: Bonnie, long gone but not forgotten, Lucifeara, and Deadmaus, and a
rousing cheer for tourney champion, Trinket. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters

Little Thin God -- I still think it would be good for you to eat more. If a strong
wind comes along, it could blow you away! -- Red Mare

Risui -- You dwarves are just too hairy for me. -- Sandstorm

Linnaeus -- This is definitely the time of year to find a cave and burrow in. --
P.S. Would you be willing to share? I'm told I don't kick in my sleep, and that I
don't snore "badly." A good snorer should be worth cultivating, don't you think?

Bak Shieldborn -- So long as you remember it was JUST luck. -- Windglass

Depravation -- How about if we try being depraved together this evening? -- Dances
with Rain
