Meanwhile, events were unfolding in the Free Blade city of Rocanis that may soon
affect Lapur.

"That Rirorni Bannok killed one of my best gladiators, right in front of us. I'm not
going to sit here with my thumbs up my own a--"

"We've already had our first stable defection," Khel Rojida Rocanis' arena manager
interrupted Grimwood, the manager of the Skull Squadron stable. Khel glanced at an
important looking piece of paper and sat it to one side of his desk in his office.

"Who?" Grimwood asked, calming down.

"The Middle Way. Jorja is recalling his stable back to Lapur."

"It was no different before Jhans attacked Rocanis or when the Rirorni hordes invaded
Alastari," Grimwood replied. "This Bannok only has one-thousand Rirorni. A small force
compared to the armies Rocanis has repelled before."

"You don't understand. Rocanis was not the same as it was. We lost a generation of
warriors in those two conflicts alone," Khel said.

"The gladiators will help bolster Rocanis' defenses like before."

Khel shook his head. "At best Rocanis could muster fifty gladiators. A paltry force
compared to the two hundred hardened, gladiator veterans Rocanis used to have."

"I'm sure the Lord Protectors of Rocanis would come in a moment's notice, if called."

"If Lady Greywand would allow it. However, we are not there, yet. Let us hope this
Bannok considers the death of his bride settled and leaves Rocanis in peace," Khel
said.

                                         ***

"Bannok, our scouts have intercepted a small caravan leaving Rocanis," a Rirorni scout
said as he entered his command tent on the Rirorni plans.

Bannok dozed on a large detailed rug with several plush pillows. He opened his eyes.
"How many."

"Two wagons with five gladiators. They were heading north."

"Where are they now?" Bannok asked rubbing the thick, black stubble on his head.

"Waiting your.. inspection. Their leader calls himself Newton Pyne."

Bannok left his tent, mounted his horse, and followed his scout a short ways. He saw
the two wagons. Besides supplies, his men were pulling weapon-after-weapon from one
and mail armor from the other. Together, the armament could easily outfit a platoon.
The five Rocani gladiators were off to the side, untied, but guarded. They wore scowls
on their faces.

Newton Pyne said, "Our manager Jorja will not stand for this. When he hears you've
stopped the Middle Way stable from reaching Lapur, he'll--"

Bannok raised his hand, silencing him. Observing them, he noted each had more than
their share of scars from the gladiator games.

Another Rirorni scout rode-up and spoke in Rathiri, the Rirorni native language. "We
found him."

Bannok saw looks of confusion on the five member of the Middle Way stable. Good, they
didn't understand their language. "Where has my younger brother gone to?"

"Our infiltrators report that Rao joined a stable in Rocanis and is playing
gladiator."

"Ah..." Bannok's brow rose. Rao always was trying to prove himself; being the best
rider, best archer, and the best swordsman. Now, he wants to be a Duelmaster. It
shouldn't have surprised him that Rao would jump at this opportunity being in
Alastari. However, he had much on his mind of late and babysitting his overachieving
little brother wasn't a top priority. However, he cared deeply for his sibling.
Considering the adversarial nature between him and Rocanis, he was concerned for Rao's
safety, if the Rocani discovered their relation.

Bannok would use these gladiators as insurance that if Rao was discovered, he wouldn't
immediate be strung up. For the moment, he'd allow Rao to 'play' in Rocanis as a
gladiator. He turned to the five Rocani gladiators and said in the Alastarian tongue.
"Your arrival in Lapur will be delayed, so until your departure, you will remain as my
guest. Please do not try to escape. It would be considered a dishonor and the
punishment will be quite severe."

The Rocani grumbled among themselves. Newton Pyne asked, "How long are we to remain
your..guests?"

Bannok replied, "I believe it takes about a year to graduate from a gladiatorial
arena."

***---------*---------*---------*---------**---------*---------*---------*---------***

A storm of news and speculation swept through Lapur's open-air market. Red Mare
stood with a net bag of onions in one hand and a braid of garlic in the other and
listened.
A princess had vanished. Some said she'd run off with a lover, others claimed it
was a kidnapping.
"Not a princess," the farmer beside her said. "Are you going to buy all that
garlic? Lapur is a Charter City. We don't have princesses."
"Shows what you know!" A stout woman who had been picking through the cabbages
turned her head and looked around her nose at him. "Some people are princesses
anywhere."
"She's the daughter of the Master Mage Skamander," a skinny man said. "That's
princess enough for the likes of us. Don't you have anything but onions and cabbages?
I could fancy some tomatoes, or maybe an eggplant."
"Too early for the fancy stuff," the farmer said. "She must have run off.
Nobody would steel the Master Mage's daughter."
"It'd take a bold lover," the stout woman said. "The Master Mage might turn him
into a frog if he caught 'im. A fat green frog." She smacked her lips.
"Probably another mage took her." The skinny man picked up an onion, turned it
in his hand, and put it back in the basket. "Onions give me gas. There might be a
magical duel over the wench. Lightning, dancing trees, and SHOWERS of fat frogs.
What about mushrooms? I wouldn't mind a dish of mushrooms."
The farmer scowled at him. "What I have is what you see right here."
Nobody seemed to have any facts about the disappearance, and Red Mare wanted to
finish her shopping and get home before Windglass or Sandstorm tried to cook. "I'll
take these onions, and all this garlic," she said.
The stout woman looked across at her and raised her eyebrows. "That's a lot of
garlic."
"We like it. Keeps the vampires away."
"That's just a story," the skinny man said. He sniffed, but whether it was to
smell the garlic or to show disinterest in it was hard to tell.
Mare shrugged. "Seems to work." She paid for the onions and garlic and moved
away from the produce baskets before the skinny man could suggest that vampires were
just a story, too. She knew better.
It took her another hour to finish at the market, and half that time was spent
cutting through the fog of gossip to purchase meat and bread. Everybody wanted to
talk about the missing "princess," and no one knew more than she'd heard already.
Which was nothing once you'd skinned it and looked at the meat. It was like going to
shear a sheep for butchering and end up with a mouse. Frustrating.
She entered the team's longhouse from the kitchen end, hoping to get dinner
started before her teammates showed up to talk. Gossip. Speculation. Not that it
had anything to do with them, dammit. A quest to rescue the princess, one that PAID,
would be good. She set a kettle of water over the fire and began to chop meat and
vegetables and toss them into it.
Windglass came into the kitchen. She knew it was him because all the bits of
metal and stone hanging from his fringes clattered and chimed against each other as he
walked. He said that kept the evil spirits away. Maybe it did, but it also made him
useless as a hunter. "Mare, the magician's come to hire us!"
That was a sentence to freeze anyone's blood, and Red Mare narrowly missed
cutting off her own thumb when she heard it. She'd thought about getting paid to find
the daughter, but she didn't want to do it. Too much chance to make a lot of enemies.
"No. We don't take outside jobs."
He came stand across the worktable from her and indicated the pile of onions.
"What, stew AGAIN? If that's what we can afford to feed the lot of us, we NEED an
outside job."
"Try winning more fights. The winner's purse would buy more food."
"But working for the Master Magician would be easier--"
"In your dreams, Windy. If it was easy, he wouldn't be hiring gladiators."
"At least come talk to him--"
"No. I've got to get the stew going, and--"
"Then I will speak to you here, valiant lady."

                                      SPY REPORT

Much has changed in LAPUR since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts
to many situations, as do all successful fighters. What's with LAUGHING LULU? She
actually beat SHADOWMIST's JAYLA, and walked away with 25 more points from the fight.
Major screwup at ALMOST EXACTLY. REPERCUSSIONIST lost 9 points to PISTOL PETE. Some
new strategies, perhaps? Maybe REPERCUSSIONIST will provide more easy wins... I can
barely restrain my enthusiam for CARDOW HUNTERS' outstanding member, Duelmaster
HUNTER. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow
fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was ALMOST EXACTLY. In my day, no team with a 313-255-16 would
scare me off! What's the problem, F? What do people see in RED MARE? Hers 23-25-0?
CARDOW HUNTERS ain't talkin', but she's got 94 points. Taunt your opponent RED MARE!
That was my lucky charm when I was unfairly challenged. (and by 17 points!) I
should have an easy win. I have to get this off my chest. What a low dog, I! It
can't set itself up in a real match. I was sorry to see RED MARE lose.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You
young rapscallions, take note!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm
writing it before you read it. Oh, well. I don't want to overstay my welcome...--
Olaf Modeen
