The (not so) Great Lapur Experiment

Many years ago (sometime in the 80s), while perusing the ads in the back of a Dragon
magazine, I stumbled upon an ad for a gladiatorial combat game called Duelmasters.
Fresh off of reading an article on the play by mail gaming phenomenon I was keen to
try it. The set up was free! What the heck! I sent away for a team. When it
arrived I did the best a high school D&D fanatic could do. I glanced through the red
book and tried to make gladiators with no weaknesses. That team landed in Kolact as
The Holy Legion. While struggling through learning the game I discussed it with
several friends. One of whom decided to join me and set up another team in Kolact
named Dragon Lords. Now, we were both poor HS students and were supporting our play
by small part time jobs (at best) or allowance (at worst), often sending cash in the
mail! We both wanted to play more but neither could afford to run a second team so we
pooled some money together and sent off for another team rollup. We had seen an all
arena ad indicating that a new arena was opening so we worked out an arrangement on
who would design and run which gladiator, settled on some names and sent team in,
hoping to land in the newly minted arena 30. We just thought Iaye was the coolest
name! We were only mildly disappointed when we found ourselves in arena 29.
Ultimately we just wanted more DM, it didn't matter which arena really. Thus the
humble beginnings of the stable known as Living Dead. Xur (we watched The Last
Starfighter WAY too much!), Evil Eye, Knightmare, Night Stalker, and Boogie Man would
only see the sands twice as the income and interest of teenagers is fickle at best.

Fast forward to around 2014. My friend who started the team with me had given his
team in Kolact to Spirit and no longer played. I had been quite busy in Niytyole
Island and had just started to play the tourney game seriously. In conversation with
other D2 players I learned that in times of DM it was possible to obtain favorite
weapons from the marginal pool as well as the well suited. Here I had a 7-3-2 team
with styles that I consider to have some really interesting marginal weapons. What if
some of these guys had them as favorites? Here I am with an original team on a team
sheet that no longer exists (they are believed to have been randomly generated during
the period when this team was created), fully populated with ancient gladiators who
had never seen toner fused to paper. I couldn't resist the challenge! I had to try
to graduate all original gladiators, rolled in the 80s, hoping for some really
interesting favorite weapons!

Let's look over this squad, without giving everything away. We have three bashers
(hey, we were just coming off of watching Landslide and my friends own Beastmaster
dominate Kolact, not to mention Goody Two Shoes!) who might have a chance at getting
the battle axe, broadsword, or fist as a favorite weapon! The other two were lungers
who could have the scimitar or the halbard! Yes, I said halbard. I know, I'm weird!
To risk looking a little like a Consortiumite here are the averages of the original
five's attributes.

ST-13.4 CN-11.2 SZ-12 WT-11.6 WL-14.2 SP-10.4 DF-11.2

As you can see, aside from being slightly willful these guys are solidly average in
just about every way possible. The return started out ok. The squad was losing more
than it won but trains and learns were going ok. We were finally getting some of the
guys to have the attributes to use some reasonable weapons. Somewhere along the way
Boogie Man, who incidentally is the closest one of the five to a modern gladiator
design, decided he was tired of undeath and renewed his dirt nap. This, of course,
killed one of the goals. No longer was it possible to graduate the original team and
I had lost 20% of what little chance I had to get a marginal favorite weapon! Boogie
Man's replacement, Wight, is interesting in his own right but losing one of the
originals killed my zest for this project and thus it died on the vine. That is until
two turns ago. Living Dead has returned to the sands of Lapur. We will endeavor to
graduate the remaining four originals in hopes of a nifty favorite weapon and graduate
Wight, which will be a D2 milestone of sorts as well. No Living Dead stablemate has
seen arena play, save Boogie Man in the dead tourneys. The original squad sits at 11
FE and Wight at 5. Here's hoping that beginning in 9 more turns we'll see some
graduations with intriguing favorite weapons!

                                      SPY REPORT

Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for LAPUR. Like, ALMOST EXACTLY had to be so
embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by LIVING DEAD! Way to go LIVING DEAD!
What was the name of that team who got 3-0-0 this turn for a total 213-190-9 you ask?
(Sure) ARGONAUTS' their name, and fighting's their game! MVP award for CRUSH
LARSSON? ARGONAUTS' proud of him after beating INSULT TO INQUIRY and getting 19
points. Talk about yer big time losers! EVIL EYE got smashed by POKEY, MON!, and
lost 14 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! OX stopped M. CHARDINEE
dead in his tracks! Who was the wiseguy that said LAPUR's Duelmaster was paying for
drinks at The Warty Toad? Don't look at me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of ALMOST EXACTLY must be getting
lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't?
Is there some deep dark secret why LIVING DEAD's been avoiding ALMOST EXACTLY so
much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can LIVING DEAD's WIGHT be more
popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you?
Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. LAPUR is like such a dump, and you guys smell
too much! Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte
