                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Phil N. Aingelle sat quietly at his desk in the small office set aside for the
Duelmaster in the Arvat Memorial Colosseum. He had just moved a pile of his
belongings in and hastily filled the shelves and trophy cases with the appropriate
memorabilia and awards. His career had been a good one so far. He had a fine 20 win
record against only 5 losses and he had taken the top spot in the arena when the
former Duelmaster, Baby Huey, took the week off after a bad reaction to some
psychedelic pills he had consumed.
So he should have been happy.
Unfortunately he had no time to revel in his achievements. Instead he had a
sense of dread and foreboding. That morning he had received word that an assassin was
stalking him.
Normally, arena gladiators had little to fear from assassins. Technically, once
they signed an arena contract all prior crimes and sins were forgiven, hence many of
the arena regulars were former thieves, murderers and worse. If they survived to
graduate from the arena they could pay a wergild, or death-payment, to the family of
those they killed (or robbed, or whatever) and would be cleared of the crimes. Anyone
who was not another gladiator who killed an active gladiator would be in serious
trouble with the Commission. He had only heard of it happening once and the
individual who killed the gladiator was struck down by bolts of lightning out of a
clear blue sky. Definitely it was not wise to buck the system.
But Phil himself was a special case. He had seen himself as something of a good
samaritan. From a young age he was a skilled thief, quick with his hands and his
wits. He couldn't really remember a time where he didn't steal. However he made it a
habit to only rob those with more than enough or even, preferably, those who stole
from or oppressed others. He would then, after taking a small tithe, of course, give
the bulk of his ill-gotten gains to poor families or churches to distribute the funds.
He felt like he was making a difference, and didn't have to work for a living, which
was a big plus.
Along the way he had managed to make a poor choice of targets and ended up
stealing a cache of fabulous gems and jewelry from some shady underworld characters
who ended up being partners with a multi-city crime syndicate. Fleeing from Murska,
Phil ended up dodging assassins and hit men until he ended up in Arvat and signed
himself into the gladiator's guild. It was the last way he could think of to sidestep
the crime kingpins who wanted him dead.
Unfortunately, his sources told him, the head of this crime league decided he was
going to get his revenge regardless, and sent out word that he would pay triple the
value of the treasures Phil had stolen for proof he was dead. Most assassins, fearing
the wrath of the Commission and Lady Greywand, refused the contract. But at least
someone, perhaps desperate for funds, had accepted and was on their way to Arvat to
kill him.
As a public figure there was no way to hide and avoid this hired killer. He had
to be alert, prepared and unpredictable. If he could identify who was after him,
perhaps he could eliminate the threat and survive.
Lost in thought, he jotted down some thoughts as to how to proceed on a piece of
parchment. As he wrote, he noticed a movement out of the corner of his eye. Moving
instinctively he dove behind the desk, just as a volley of darts flew in the open
window to his office and embedded themselves into the desk, the wall and a bookshelf.
Phil peered over the desk, seeing no one at the window, and rose, cautiously, while
drawing his scimitar. The assailant had apparently climbed the tree just outside the
arena and then fled after hurling the darts. The assassin was already in Arvat.
There was nowhere he would be safe...

                                  (to be continued)

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome ARVAT. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have I
fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Up 'n down. Up 'n down.
Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, IRON CITADEL's
5th moved them up to 4-1-1 place. What's with STONE KNIGHT? He actually beat SECRET
SQUIRRELS' MRS SHIN CRITICAL, and walked away with 22 more points from the fight.
Major screwup at B.I.G.. FEDERAL AGENT lost 17 points to CLAY MEROSOLZ. Some new
strategies, perhaps? Maybe FEDERAL AGENT will provide more easy wins... Another
fighter (CPT OBVIOUS 11-13-1) challenged another Duelmaster (PHIL N. AINGELLE
21-5-1). Life goes on. Try as he might, CPT OBVIOUS wasn't good enough at
persuading PHIL N. AINGELLE to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... I suppose
you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of
practive, GASTROPUB! Management must be dealin', as the boys at SECRET SQUIRRELS
ain't reelin'! GASTROPUB's mad! How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, FEDERAL AGENT! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to
haunt you.
Warriors of ARVAT unite. You have only your games to lose! We all knew it had
to happen sooner or later. A warrior can't stick around with a 5-4-2, and STONE
KNIGHT easily took care of MRS SHIN CRITICAL. How long have I been here? I got
people to see, places to go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

cramp, the census form has been eliminated, effective immediately. Managers may
register their warriors' races and/or favorite sayings by simply writing them on a
separate piece of paper and submitting them to the Commission. Each warrior may have
