                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Arvat, the Ducal Manor:

As Agony waited in the shadows of a storage closet in the kitchen of the Ducal
Manor of Arvat, garbed in servant's clothing and tense with the anticipation of
assassinating the Duke himself, he became aware that the sword had dropped its focus
on him and was silently communicating with someone else. With the focus off of him,
Agony regained some of his own will and began to eavesdrop on the sword.
Apparently it was telepathically communicating with an ally or other servant,
and he was unable to hear the other part of the conversation, only what the sword was
sending.
'Unleash the undead now.' The sword demanded of its unknown partner. 'We will
need a diversion and the nearness of the Underworld at this time of year makes it
that much easier. Your minions must rampage through the city of Arvat and keep any
assistance from coming to the Duke's aid. It is not necessary that they take the
town, just that they keep anyone else from storming the manor. As it is there will
be a number of the arena managers here as well as armed servitors of the Duke
himself.'
The sword paused while it obviously received a telepathic response, then
continued. 'Yes. I have made arrangements for the Dark One to be absent from the
Duke's Ball, so there will be none here with magical aptitude, yet many others will
be here including Caesar and his retinue, all skilled warriors, and Zalgor should be
here as well. They will be enough for me to handle. Also it is apparent that the
fool of a Duke is romantically engaged with the Arenamistress. I must be prepared to
counter her interference as well. Very well. When next we meet, your realm of death
shall have gained a foothold here in the material world.'
Agony was shocked. The sword was speaking with either Ahringol, the God of
Death, or one of his close minions. He had not been told anything about this from
the sword before. Everything was about killing the Duke. But then why would the
sword worry about filling him in on its plans? He was but a pawn to it. Expendable.
Obviously it had greater designs. Then all thoughts of the sword and its plans were
wiped away as the sword reasserted its control over the former Duelmaster.

Isle of the Eye, Free Blades Arena Headquarters:

Defiance paced back and forth. He had assembled a small group of fellow
guildmates and was waiting for word from Tortured Trout, the guild wizard, about his
progress in contacting the Dark One. In addition to the fishy one, he had two
skilled fighters and arena veterans with him - D. Moe Gorgon and Levi A. Thon. Both
were deadly warriors, if not all that bright.
In the past day much had been revealed to Defiance. The sword which was the
symbol of the Lord Marshall of Free Blades, El Cid, had warned him that an equally
powerful blade, called the Sword of the Underworld, had been unearthed and was
currently active in the city of Arvat. Why or how, Defiance did not know. He was
only sure that the sword needed to be stopped, and he was best equipped to stop it,
with El Cid in hand.
The double doors to the conference room flew open and Tortured Trout stalked in.
'I have been unable to reach the Dark One for instructions. He is on another plane
of existence at this time and I don't have the power to break through the veil to
contact him. We are on our own.'
Defiance expected as much. 'Very well, it's up to the four of us. Can you
teleport us to Arvat? As close as possible to the Sword of the Underword without it
being able to detect us? We can then try to determine what it's up to and stop it as
quickly as we can.'
Tortured Trout nodded. 'Gather around me.'
With a flash of light and the smell of brimstone, they were gone.

Arvat, Devil Advocates Guildhouse:

Lou C. Firr and Abbie Donn were arm wrestling in the dining hall of the Devil
Advocates guildhouse. The two had tied for the top spot in the arena based on
recognition points and neither of them was granted the title of Duelmaster. And
neither of them was willing to cede their claim.
Lou had been in the arena for a long, long time. His 21-21 record was built
over nearly two years fighting in Arvat. He wanted more than anything else to hold
the title before he either died or graduated. Anyone who got in his way would be
rolled over.
Abbie was a physical specimen, extremely tall for a woman, towering at 6'8" in
her stocking feet; she had always been called a freak or insulted endlessly in her
youth. Before she had been recruited by the guild she had expected to have a career
lighting streetlamps or some other equally ignoble destiny. She was passionate about
her dueling and was never willing to give an inch.
As the two strained and struggled to gain the advantage in the arm wrestling,
junior guild member Lil Ethe rushed in, wearing her plate armor and brandishing a war
flail. They homely young girl had a look of panic on her face.
'The streets are full of zombies! They just smashed down the front gate and
seized Forim, the butler. They ripped him into pieces and are eating him!' Lil
looked like she was going to pass out.
Lou and Abbie glanced at each other for a moment and leaped up.
'To arms! To arms!' Lou bellowed, running for his equipment locker while Abbie
snatched up her scimitar and shouted, 'Guildmates! To me! Intruders in the Guild!'
From all corners of the ancient tower answering shouts rang out as the guild
prepared to do battle.

Arvat, Grisly Lion Inn:

Hobar the Miller was a good man. He worked every day at his mill in the sleepy
town of Arvat. Milling was hard work. He bought the wheat, set the milling wheel
and ground the meal. He then sold the meal and transported it to seven different
bakers throughout the city. He maintained his own equipment, tended his wagon and
mules and essentially completed every other task in the mill.
All he asked was that he be allowed to stop at the Grisly Lion on his way home
and have the chance to enjoy one tankard of ale. It was all he asked.
But his wife, Hilgar, didn't understand. She never approved of drinking and to
her all ale was the work of Ahringol. Every night she frowned and scowled and
stomped around once he returned home, showing her disapproval.
That didn't stop Hobar, though. He still stopped at the Grisly Lion every
night.
As Hobar tipped his mug and swallowed the last of the cool, spicy ale, he heard
a disturbance outside. Probably one of the Roman coolies had blocked the road and a
cart driver was shouting at him.
Hobar rose, tipped the bartender and headed out. As he opened to door, a scene
of horror stood before him. Lumbering walking corpses in various stages of decay
were everywhere. Covered with maggots and oozing, rotting flesh, the zombies slowly,
inexorably were chasing down citizens and killing them. Worse, they were then
devouring the bodies in gory fashion!
An eerie groan drew Hobar's attention. He looked quickly to his left and saw a
zombie lunging for him. In an instant he was lifted off his feet, too shocked even
to scream. The zombie twisted and he heard his neck snap like a rotten branch.
As darkness fell, Hobar's last thoughts were, 'All I asked was one pint of
ale...'

Arvat, the Ducal Manor:

The guests had arrived. Four huge, rectangular tables filled the ball room, one
forming each side of the giant square dance floor. Servants scurried back and forth,
fetching hors d'oeuvres and glasses of sparkling wines for the rich and famous of the
city of Arvat. The Ducal Ball was the highlight of Arvat social life. Once a year
everyone who was anyone was invited to attend for a night of feasting, drinking and
dancing.
Aristocrats, the richest merchants, owners of the best gladiatorial stables in
the city and famed actors and actresses all mingled in a mass of ego and self
worship. It was always quite the spectacle.
From his closet Agony surveyed the guests and watched for the arrival of the
Duke. He always came fashionably late to his own party. Fortuitously, the Duke's
path would take him right past Agony's hiding spot, allowing him to leap forth and
strike before anyone could react.
The sword would charge him with extra strength and skill prior to the attack,
making him an almost superhuman assassin. That coupled with his already
considerable skills from the arena... Agony was certain that no one could stop him
At that moment the fanfare of trumpets announced the arrival of the Duke.
Smiling, the fellow emerged from an upstairs room and began to descend the wide,
marble stairs to the applause of his guests.
The Arenamistress Sugar was on his right, holding the Duke's arm. She was a
concern, but not overmuch. In her blue silk gown she might have several weapons
stashed away, yet surprise and the magical advantage given by the sword would allow
Agony to kill the Duke before worrying about any counterstrike.
Slowly he watched as the Duke grew near. Agony slowly eased the closet door
open and stepped from the shadows...

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Just as Agony began moving forward to assassinate the Duke, a piercing scream
shattered the festivities at the Ducal Ball. From the front hall of the manor,
shouts rang out, followed by the sounds of fighting. An instant later a wave of
rotting corpses lumbered into the ballroom, eagerly seizing guests and servants alike
and ripping them into edible pieces.
At the same moment, the kitchen doors flew open, slamming against the side walls
of the hallway despite the mechanism meant to halt their progress. Defiance, armed
with El Cid, charged into the ballroom.
"Assassin! Assassin!" Defiance shouted. "Sugar! Get the Duke to safety!"
Tortured Trout, Levi A. Thon and D. Moe Gorgon moved to intercept the zombie
hoard, leaving Defiance to stop Agony and the Sword of the Underworld.
Arenamistress Sugar, upon hearing the shouted warning, spun and suddenly a
dagger appeared in her hand. She grabbed the Duke with her other hand and pulled him
down a side corridor.
Agony took one step towards the Duke and then the sword began speaking to him.
"No, fool, it is no use now. The weakling Duke will have to await another day. We
must escape."
Agony sensed fear in the blade's mental sending. It was definitely not
confident of victory here. But why? Then he noticed the glowing sword in Defiance's
hands. It was very much the same as his own. That must be what the sword feared.
Defiance moved through the retreating crowd, keeping his eye on Agony and the
Blade of the Underworld. He wasn't sure why one of his former guildmates was
wielding the cursed weapon, and even less sure why Agony would be trying to kill the
Duke.
El Cid spoke suddenly in Defiance's mind. "The Sword of the Underworld does not
ally itself with humans. Your friend is but a pawn to it. It is controlling his
every action. Unfortunately we may have to kill him to stop it."
Defiance frowned as he moved a gowned matron aside to continue his advance. He
wasn't particularly enthusiastic about killing Agony. They were not close friends,
but he had helped Agony train and they were more than acquaintances. There had to be
another way to stop him.
At that, Agony turned and ran, back into the pantries of the manor, seeking the
hidden stairs and the long descent back through the cellars. The Sword of the
Underworld seethed. It had been thwarted, once again, by its brother blade. The
plan was so perfect. The Duke should be dead! It had happened before. Many times.
Somehow every time it forged a plan to destroy the balance and shift the world into
darkness, the other sword always discovered the plot and interfered. Then it would
have to flee, bide its time until another plan could be created. Enough! This was
enough! For once it would turn and fight!
Defiance raced down the spiral staircase in pursuit of Agony and the cursed
sword. Urged on by El Cid, he leaped the banister near the bottom and bolted along
after the tracks in the dusty cellar.
He only had a moment's warning to throw himself flat when the Sword of the
Underworld whistled out of the darkness, just missing shearing off the top of
Defiance's head. He rolled to his feet and lunged into the attack.
A fierce flurry of feints, attacks and parries followed as both gladiators moved
too fast to be seen by mortal eye. Sparks showered from the blades as they met again
and again in the deadly dance.
Across the cellar the battle flowed with each combatant seeking to gain an
advantage, using the old furniture as a barrier to interfere with their opponent's
range of motion.
Defiance, judging the battle dispassionately from his perspective, felt that
they were too evenly matched for the fight to be won easily or quickly. With the
swords enhancing the gladiator's already honed skills, they might fight on and on for
hours.
Agony, trapped within the iron grip of the will of the Sword of the Underworld,
had come to much the same conclusion. But then he realized that the Sword was so
occupied on the battle, its hold over him was slipping a little. At least he could
think independently now, even if he couldn't do anything about it. Or perhaps he
could.
As the next lightning blow arced towards him, Agony focused all his strength and
tried to will himself to alter the parry. For an instant it appeared that his effort
was insufficient, as the swords met with a clang, but then El Cid slipped around the
parry and buried itself to the hilt in Agony's chest.
Slipping into darkness, he threw a defiant thought at the Blade of the
Underworld. 'I am no pawn, sword. And you have lost!' Blackness enveloped him.

Isle of the Eye -- Free Blades Headquarters:

Defiance returned El Cid to the new Lord Marshall of Free Blades. He had kept
the sword longer than he should have, having lost his title several turns back.
There would be some penalty for that, but it was necessary.
In the end, once he had won the fight with Agony he had consulted with El Cid on
how to destroy the Blade of the Underworld, and determined that there really wasn't
any way to unmake the sword permanently. Instead they had taken it and sealed it
within a great block of crystal, forever to rest as an exhibit in the Hall of
Trophies on the Isle of the Eye. No one could touch the sword and, therefore, it
would be unable to work its mischief. Defiance was less than satisfied with this
resolution, but swords made by gods were beyond him. It would have to do.

Arvat -- Devil Advocates Guildhouse:

     Agony awoke with a groan.
His teammates and Tortured Trout, the old gladiator-turned-wizard who was the
Dark One's apprentice, stood around his bed looking down at him.
"I'm alive?" He was shocked. "Neat trick, that."
Lou C. Firr wouldn't meet his gaze. "Well, not exactly. You were pretty well
killed by the time Defiance brought you back here. And you're not immortal or
anything. And the magic to resurrect you is pretty rare. That's why they use it for
tournament prizes and stuff..."
Tortured Trout nodded. "What he's trying to say is that the best we could do is
to latch on to some of the magic that the Sword of the Underworld was using and bring
you back... as a zombie."
Agony considered that. "I don't feel like a zombie. I don't feel quite right,
but I'm not hankering for human flesh or anything."
"That's because you still have your soul. We got to you in time for that, at
least."
A zombie with a soul. Agony sat up. There were worse things to be, he
supposed. Like dead. Or being controlled by a cursed sword for the rest of your
days.
"Well, I'd better get up and start practicing. I'm still in the arena and
there's a title to win."

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ARVAT brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. If this keeps up, ROMAN HEROES, you'll
have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4 in the rankings? Of course,
we're all terribly impressed to see UNBREAKABLE win a fight and gain 21 points,
terribly. Tsk, tsk, ABBIE DONN beat EAST TO WEST and EAST TO WEST lost 16 points.
You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, ARVAT may be getting
bland, as LOU C. FIRR stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today,
but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, ARVAT?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. DEVIL ADVOCATES, I suppose you'll be glad to know you
were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And
it looks like ANGELS OF PAIN avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would
be losers, if you ask me. Hmph.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ARVAT's
morgue. More variety. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate
catches up with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of ARVAT. I feel much better now. Paste this one in your
scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Sarlow -- Good title fight... Like you said last turn, one would think we'd be
learning better than that. And what's with the decise learns? Those aren't about to
help either of us at this stage of the game. -- Lou

Heron -- Is that flirting? I'm not much familiar with that, so pardon me if I don't
recognize it. Why don't you come over and spar with me and we'll see where things go
from there? -- Abbie Donn

Peter Piquin -- Ouch. I thought I had you there for a moment, but nice counterattack
on your part. -- Abbie Donn

HELP WANTED: For removing rotting zombie parts from the streets of Arvat.
Three coppers a head, two an arm, three a leg or eight for a torso. No limit.

Abbie Donn -- Ah, now, that's good. I like a woman big enough to get hold of. --
Peter Piquin

Lou C. Firr -- Naturally I lost. No one expects me to defeat a lord protector, after
all. And it feels good to have that excu-- explanation. -- Sarlow

Bill P. Gore -- Damned politicians. -- Cutler Bates

Lil Ethe -- My, you certainly seem prepared to go on and on about things. I suppose
this is good, but some things are better not talked about, is what *I* think, even to
