BOURBON and POLITICS
A CONSORTIUM JOURNEY
With all the bourbon and political naming in the arenas of late, I thought this true
life story might be pertinent and interesting. From the life and living of... The
Consortium.
Back in 1968, my Dad, an over-the-road truck driver for Can-Tex (sewer pipe) and a
County Commissioner (Perry County, IN), asked me to take off a election day owhile in
college and come home and help out with the elections. Both Mom and Dad were working
the polls and needed me to travel out into the countryside and pick up Democratic
voters who were unable to get to the polls. (like no car, old age, poor health, well-
inebriated, etc) One must realize that Perry County was solidly Democrat, as was my
family, with Mom, VP of County Democratic Party, and Dad, Commissioner, also being
State Voting Representatives for Presidential Elections. My job was to pick up these
voters, bring them to the polls to vote; take them home and give them a half-pint
bottle of Yellowstone for their reward. I guess I picked up 20 or so voters, and then
delivered the rest of the large box of half-pints to our basement at home.
This was my first time to vote, and in the presidential election I voted straight
Democrat which included Hubert Humphrey for President (He lost to Nixon) and. Of
course, my Dad (Earl W. Smith) for County Commissioner reelection. (He won)
Between the next Presidential election, I finished my Engineering Degree;began working
as an Engineer for G.E. back in Perry County; got married; had a daughter (Jodi Ann);
obtained an M. .A.; moved to Fayetteville, N.C to work for a Black & Decker start-up;
and enlightenedly became a solid Conservative.
During the 1972 election, my wife's first to be able to vote, we cast our ballots
straight Republican. (Nixon was reelected) Several days after the election, a box was
delivered to our apartment in Fayetteville. It was addressed to six-month old Jodi,
from my Father. Inside were many Democratic items -- blow up donkeys, pins, ribbons,
etc -- from the campaign. There was also a simple hand-written letter:
*Dear Jodi, *
*I hope when you grow up, you are more intelligent than your father and your
mother.*
*Love, Grandpa*
The story does not, however, end there. Fast forward fifty years or so. My father had
passed away at 68, and my mother had just recently died at 91. My sister and I are
hosting an auction of all the items in our parents house and the large barn. (The home
and 20 acres of property had already been sold to a buyer waiting to take possession.)
As we went through the many items (some quite antique; my Mom and I in my youth had
been in every Book Club possible and owned several hundred books; Mom collected 200ish
dolls, some from many countries of my work travels) for auction, we came to the
clothes hamper just outside the upstairs bathroom, which held clean towels for
bathing. After lifting out the towels on top, we surprisingly discovered 27 half-pint
bottles of Yellowstone bourbon which must have been from the aftermath of that 1968
election. (Since alcohol could not be auctioned and neither my sister's family nor
mine drank, we donated them to the auctioneer. I wish, now, that I had been smarter
and retained them for myself. They may have a great asset for use by some of my
friends at our Face-To-Face events.)

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Anneli tried to look comfortable on the throne. She tried to sit prefectly and enjoy
her laurels.
It was not to be.
You see, the sand was getting everywhere, under her armor, inside her helm, grating in
her gauntlets. The sand was fouling her joints; the sand was even infiltrating her
girdle! It was in places that were not made for sand! Her plate mail armor when she
moved ground like a pepper mill, only these grains would not crack. Deep in between
her fingers, under her fingernails, grit between her toes, wiping the grains from here
only to feel more there. Sand found its way somehow, someway into the back of her
mouth, popping and tap dancing on her aching molars. Sand in her hair, by the gods it
was in her hair, her forehead now 80 grit.
It felt like a night at the beach at a Sandals, only she had no date, no suitor...just
a lonely throne, coverd in sand.
SPY REPORT
Listen well, ye bloodthirsty lot. The surf crashes against the rocks beyond my prison
cliffs, and the gulls circle overhead like they know a corpse will soon wash ashore. I
can roam this cursed island from beach to beach, but the witch's spell holds me
tighter than iron chains. So while I can't sail, I can watch the arena. And from my
vantage atop the stands, I see every duel, every fall, and every fool who thinks
themselves immortal. The turn gave us plenty of screams and steel to savor.
The sands have a new tyrant wearing the crown. Robber seized the throne in brutal
fashion from Anneli, claiming the champion's chair with ruthless efficiency. The
pirate in me respects that sort of decisive mutiny. Robber now sits atop this island's
pile of skulls and rubbish, and he will soon sail onward to the Isle of the Eye. One
more turn, they say. Enjoy the throne while it lasts, thief.
The winds shifted among the crews this week. Obsidian Hall surged to the top of the
standings, riding a strong run across the sands at 5-0. They fought like a disciplined
raiding party, reminding me of a group I once encountered off the coasts of Illis. NYE
Maulers turned a 3-2-1-1 turn into an award for Top Team on the Move.
Every island has predators and prey. Misfit Toy Makers somehow got the distinction of
being a predator by being the most avoided team. Like a bilge rat jumping ship, The
Demonic Pickles fled from the Toy Makers. Seems the Pickles would rather pickle
themselves in brine than face those Misfits. Next, we talk about the warrior who
cannot walk ten paces without someone trying to stab them. Queen Patience drew the
interest of many as the most challenged. The name might suggest a calm demeanor, but
patience will surely run thin when the arena is lining up to test your steel.
No arena is complete without Death collecting his due. Adophis Jr has the most
infamous death for the turn. He was struck down by Venomous Concubine. I might walk
myself off a plank in embarrassment. Cruel Nights lost Jari the Gifted to Head
Scrambler. Blood feeds the sand. It is true in every arena across the land and seas.
From my cursed arena perch, I watch you all like ships fighting in a storm. Some of
you sail strong. Some are taking on water. And some... are already drifting toward the
reef. Fight well next turn, warriors. While I cannot leave this island, your bones
certainly can.
