Description
Velthra is a lesser goddess in service to Ahringol. Her domains and influences are
collection, transition, and the unclaimed, specifically as they relate to souls. She
does not judge, nor does she command death. Instead, she is the inevitable presence
after one draws a final breath. She is loyal to Ahringol and has little to no contact
with other Alastarian deities.
Where warriors fall unnoticed on the battlefield, where bodies sink into the dark
depths, where names are forgotten before they are spoken, Velthra arrives.
She is described by the few who have claimed to have seen her as a tall, thin woman
wrapped in sea-dark veils that drift as though underwater, even on dry land. Her face
is pale like sun-bleached bone, and her eyes appear as dim lanterns with their
shutters only slightly opened. In one hand, she swings a chain-lantern. The lantern
has no flame, but contains bright, fluttering wisps said to be souls awaiting delivery
to Ahringol. Her steps make no sound, but every witness has claimed to hear the gentle
echo of waves.
History
Before the rise of kingdoms, before the arenas of Alastari were introduced into the
world, there were the early ages of chaos. The prehistory of Alastari is filled with
the barbarism one expects from uncivilized masses. Warriors died in nameless
skirmishes, fighting for territory and food. Bodies lost in forests, abandoned in
deserts, and drowned in rivers littered the lands. There were so many that souls
wandered, untethered and uncollected. Some faded and were forever expelled from the
cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Others twisted into evil mockeries of their former
selves, becoming abominations whose legacies still terrorize Alastari in the present
day.
It is said Ahringol, in his cold sovereignty over death, saw this disorder. He did not
rage. He corrected it. From the quiet between heartbeats and the pause between
breaths, he shaped Velthra. He did not form her from flesh or spirit. It is whispered
among the sages that Ahringol formed her from absence itself. She was given no throne
and no demand for worship. Velthra was given a task.
"Find them. All of them."
From that moment, Velthra has walked every battlefield, every shoreline, and every
forgotten grave. She gathers the lost and delivers them to the domain of Ahringol,
ensuring none escape the final counting. She does not rush to her task. She does not
fail.
Personality
Velthra is not cruel, but neither is she kind. She is patient beyond human
comprehension, a whisper at the edge of awareness. Warriors have claimed to glimpse
her just before death. None have described her as threatening, but rather as a
certainty.
She does not speak often. When she does, her voice has been described as wind through
torn ship sails or a tattered battlefield banner.
The seers claim that when multiple deaths occur in the arena, Velthra walks the sands
unseen, her lantern glowing faintly after the day's bouts. Warriors who die on the
battlefield without recognition or remembrance are said to linger until Velthra finds
them. Among the sailors of the Storm Sea, they say those lost at sea belong to Velthra
first and Ahringol second.
Symbol
Velthra's symbol among the Alastarian Pantheon is a dim lantern bound in chains, with
a single wisp lighting the inside.
Lore
On rare nights, a lantern is seen offshore, bobbing on the waters just out of reach.
Sailors are warned not to follow it under any circumstance. Those who do not listen
and seek the light are never seen again.
However, their names always appear in the rolls of the dead.

Notes from the arena champ.
Well that figures! I finally get to the top spot in this here arena and bang - the
invite show up. So, I don't even get to try and hold the throne. Defend my honor as
it were. That's right, MY honor -- not EMU's. This isn't about him; it is about ME.
This is about MY success in spite of EMU.
I got here on my own.
I got my invite on my own. Hear that Emu, ON MY OWN!
Lesten to me when I say, you meddling managers have litte to do with what happens on
the sand. It is our muscle, our bone and our nerve that walk out onto the sand. Know
that WE fight for ourselves. Not for the people, and damn sure not for you managers.
I am off to the Isle.

SPY REPORT
There are days when I almost forget I am forbidden to leave this island. Then I see
the harbor. Fortunately, Niytyole continues to offer the next best thing to freedom:
dozens of armed lunatics trying to cripple one another for money and whatever peculiar
satisfaction comes from seeing your name printed higher on a sheet of parchment.
Hamfast is now Duelmaster after Tempest Red challenged him for the throne. It was not
close, and the little hobbit took over the throne on recognition. Hamfast sent the
challenger away in a single minute and now sits at 14-9-1 with 107 recognition. A
sturdy little creature, that one. I have seen men twice his size become considerably
less troublesome after being thrown from a ship, yet apparently the proper response to
Hamfast is simply to keep hitting him until someone rings a bell.
The real movement this turn came farther down the rankings. Cruel Nights gained forty-
three points, Mercenaries Inc. picked up thirty-seven, M.U.M.ers added thirty-three,
and Alastari Amigos! collected thirty-one. Emu's Brood took the top-team position over
the last three turns with a 10-5-1 record, which apparently frightened enough people
that they became the most avoided team on the island. Misfit Toy Makers did more of
that avoiding than anyone else. I understand caution. I simply prefer it when people
admit they are running.
Papirtiger enjoyed one of the finest afternoons, pounding Chaw Nightcrawler in a
minute and walking away with twenty-one additional recognition points. Chaw lost
sixteen in the bargain, which seems fair. If you are going to be beaten that quickly,
the clerks should at least take something from you besides your dignity.
Diethen Dundab provided the more satisfying upset. Annie Wrecksean challenged twenty-
eight points downward, presumably expecting an easy afternoon, and instead spent five
minutes discovering why confidence and competence are not the same thing. Diethen won.
Somewhere, I hope, Annie's manager quietly folded the challenge strategy into a little
paper boat and set it on fire.
Slippery When Wet remains an irritating little success story. Juan Indastine
challenged the unbeaten newcomer and was flattened in three minutes. Slippery now
stands 3-0 and leads the unchartered warriors. I dislike the name immensely, but
results are results.
Then we had the endurance contests. The Stepfather and Twisted Branches fought for
nine minutes. Queen Patience and Booty Ho fought for fourteen. Briarwyn and
Kriminwhole fought for twenty. Twenty minutes. By the tenth minute I had begun
reconsidering execution as a form of entertainment. By the fifteenth, I was wondering
whether Sheila Greywand might reconsider my sentence if I confessed to crimes I had
not committed. By the twentieth, Kriminwhole finally lost, and the spectators
remembered what sunlight looked like.
Elsewhere, Santa's Favorite remained undefeated by beating Bek Styles, Dusty flattened
Phil-Pickle, Bigunn5 overwhelmed Wreck-It-Ralph, and Joe Marvelous continued his climb
by wrecking Dill of Phil. Lady Tera also made an impressive debut by disposing of the
Embezzling Scribe in a minute. A fine beginning. The trick is surviving long enough
for people to stop calling it beginner's luck.
Two warriors departed Niytyole for the Advanced Games after this turn. Chuck Roast
made the journey, as did Shotgun Shell, who commemorated his final appearance by
annihilating Somecallmetim in one minute. That is how one leaves an arena. Quickly,
violently, and with someone else wondering what just happened. Marina Widowcrest will
make the same journey after next turn. Lucky woman. Perhaps I shall ask her to smuggle
me out in her luggage.
