TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"...jerk!" Blackberry Thorn scowled as he left Tallow's offices. The smells of
fish and the sounds of haggling from the market lingered after he'd slammed the door
and stomped down the stairs. Sure, the view was nice on a clear day when you could see
the strange, yet beautiful ancient elven towers of Monuntial on the mainland. But why
did the boss man have to be such a jerk!?
It wasn't so much a nasty disposition or an ill-temper. No, Tallow was mild-
mannered, polite even. Political. It was with that smooth smile and comforting, deep
voice that Tallow had ordered him to the dark arena. And Blackberry Thorn had
destroyed the Dark Champion to stay alive. Not so much from skill or ability, but from
sheer spite and hatred born from betrayal. Betrayal for him, and his less lucky
brother Unhappy Arcs.
Jimmy. His best friend was named Jimmy. Jimmy wasn't a gladiator. Blackberry
Thorn sat and drank a cup of strong tea and ate a bowl of salted cod chowder three
times a week with Jimmy and his mother. His friend's father had just passed and he'd
taken over the family cafe a year earlier. It had been awhile since he'd fought,
approximately 23 years. He wasn't a young man anymore, none of his original brothers
and sisters were. But he had no choice now but to fight as Tallow wasn't going to
allow him out. And if he wanted to live and marry Jimmy's sister, he'd need to find
his immortality, something that was only possible for the best of the best or those
with uncommon longevity with average skills and a profession where one tries to kill
or seriously injure their competition on a daily basis. Blackberry Thorn wishes he had
a real name. Like Jimmy...
"...sigh," Tallow grimaced as Blackberry Thorn stormed away. He knew his
"business" decision could come back to bite him. He needed younger fighters for the
past tourney and Blackberry Thorn was an over-the-hill veteran unlikely to amount to
much. But was he too cavalier with the lives of those who considered him a father? At
least they considered him a father at one time.
It had been twenty-three years since the last time he managed any gladiators. He
was tired. But time and nostalgia has a way of catching up. It was maybe over a decade
longer since he'd brought a group of orphans under his wing. Was he a monster for
raising those children, housing, feeding, and giving them purpose? The orphanage in
Zukal was squalid, and those children were destined to be dead of some unclean disease
or other born from contaminated water or cramped proximity. Was he a monster for
hiring a man to burn down the orphanage, so the children would have no other option
but him? For trekking toddlers across Alastari and onto a crappy island in the middle
of the Storm Sea just to train them to fight for their life as gladiators every day?
They had food, clothing, housing, and a purpose. Two of them had even gained their
immortality: Rustling Breeze and Salty Rivers.
He had grown tired; he was a monster. He'd even given these children n poem he'd
wrote. A poem full of nostalgia from his childhood when he ran around the woods of his
grandfather's property playing manhunt with his cousins. Avoiding capture by racing
through thickets of blackberry thorns and imagining they were warriors fighting for
survival. He'd decided he was a monster back then, and maybe he still was.
But he could give these kids purpose again, and now he had the resources to adopt
the kids the right way. And not to take away their real names. Unfortunately for
Blackberry Thorn and his late younger brother Unhappy Arcs, he'd forgotten what their
real names were. Maybe he could help him pick one. The new orphans? His children? He'd
let them keep their real name--for outside the arena. Even two of them he allowed them
to choose their own arena names.
Tallow smiled when they chose names indicative of that poem. He was writing his
announcement to the Niytyole Arena for his warriors. Blackberry Thorn, Twisted
Branches, Aching Fingertips, Scarwind Murmur and Field Keepsnames. Anyways, here's the
poem.
Cracked granite cradles twisted branches just born.
The dry rasping sound of a haphazard zephyr over newly sprouted leaves,
Draws forth the licking laughter, man's spawn watching the rustling breeze.
Don't weep o'er spilt blood, a mother scolds child.
Voices of reason cascade to uselessness;
Youngsters spurned on for badges of courage a look will confess.
Odors of pain waft out from aching fingertips,
The flow of sweet, salty rivers course through suckling lips.
Tears trace unhappy arcs, drowning sorrow, however mild.

How are we doing on the Isle?
For those who track these things, I am the first Misfit Toy Maker to hold the throne.
*cuts her eyes at the throne from her position two feet away and grimaces*
Anyway, I was told to share something personal. I have this condition... We're not
sure why but my hands always seem covered by sand. But I have a line on a necromancer
who claims to know how to fix this problem so perhaps it stops being an issue soon.
And now, I'm going to find something to clean this... this... yeah, this.

SPY REPORT
If you are reading this, congratulations. I'm still alive, still bound to Niytyole
Island, and still reduced to reporting on arena bouts rather than raiding coastal
cities. The ice witch, Sheila, says it "will keep your mind occupied." A charming
thought. A wrong one. Let's get this over with so I can get back to scratching out
marks on my wall.
Sandy Claws still rules as Duelmaster, swatting aside challengers like flies on a rum
barrel. By-Tor learned that lesson the hard way, directly into the sand and straight
into the obituaries. Misfit Toy Makers continue to cackle from the top, their banner
still raised higher than all others. Their enemies are plentiful, and the avoidance
list is growing. Too many people are afraid to play in the surf, it seems.
Over in the waters of respectable ambition, Angel's Envy continues to glide upwards.
Smooth and efficient, this one. The type of fighter who kills you before you realize
you've made a mistake. Emu's Brood had itself a loud, messy week. Shotgun Shell earned
the crowd's favor and left Queen Patience with considerably less patience than she
arrived with. Anneli also reminded NYE Maulers that some challenges should remain
undelivered.
Big Lake Bandits entertained me greatly. Dima Pinkytoe punching upward and winning was
a rare bright spot in an otherwise sloppy showing. Credit where it's due, though I
suspect luck was involved. Luck is a faithless ally. Cruel Nights lived up to the name
but not the results. Lady Thornkiss continues her downward slide, while Queen Patience
draws challenges like sharks to blood. Neither seems pleased about it. They should be
used to the disappointment by now. This island is good at that.
Misfit Toy Makers have the throne and the gudging fear-respect of the arena at large.
They were the most avoided team. Putting By-Tor on a slow barge to be buried at sea,
these misfits showed their toys should come with warning labels. Who cowered the most
when Misfit Toy Makers entered the arena? Thunderbirds flew away from them with the
speed of a seagull scooping a fish.
So ends another turn on Niytyole Island. Fighters rise, fighters die, and I watch with
indifference, chronicling your victories like a glorified clerk with a dagger-shaped
pen. If you need me, I'll be staring at the western horizon. I like to watch the
sunset as I plan my revenge on a witch and wait for the next batch of fools step onto
the sands.
