DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
"They did what?!" Bartender was a one-man execution squad firing away at the
"messenger" Farmor. He paced the little space between the bar counter and the
shelves of better and lesser known spirits covering the walls of his establishment.
"They put White Lightning in the ground two hours ago," Farmor repeated, making
sure that Bartender was not in arm's reach of any of the bottles behind him.
"But they can't do that! He's got a tourney to fight." Bartender moved his
gaze around the bar, desperately trying to find a solution to this mess in the void
before him. "Now, they are just gonna have to dig him up, then," he finally
concluded. "I've paid for him to participate, so participate he will."

The day before, Bartender was chuckling to himself, causing his shoulders and
belly to move unsynchronizedly up and down. He had just received the match-ups for
the night's duels and it seemed that he would be able to get back at the Jugger
pretty good this turn. One thing troubled him, though, and it was White Lightning's
opponent.
At the end of the bar counter, one of the regulars, Norbert, was staring down
into an empty mug. Bartender walked over to him, filled his mug with the best ale
the bar served and shot a bright smile at him.
"On the house," Bartender offered, "if you can help me with something. Or
rather, answer a question for me." Bartender didn't even bother to wait to see
whether his offer was accepted or not, as he was sure it would be. "One of my guys
is up against someone who goes by the name of Oedipus. You wouldn't happen to know
who he is, would you?"
"Well," Norbert began, "they say Soultaker moved his Dullens team here. That
arena died over a year ago. Some say he's here to stay. Some say he's just prepping
for the tourney." Norbert took a long sip from his mug. "It's a pretty awesome
team, I hear. You might have heard of Sigmund Freud." Norbert received a nod. "As
for Oedipus, all I know is that he's supposed to be an aimer."
"Ah! Well, that doesn't sound too bad." Bartender was relieved at this
information. "How much problem can an aimed blow be," he thought contently to
himself.

Oedipus' scimitar crashed into White Lightning's head with a tremendous force
and the audience cringed at the horrendous cracking sound.
"Oh! That can't be good," Bartender said to St Magdalene, who was sitting next
to him. He had to look away but he could still hear how blow after blow rammed
through White Lightning's helm. What appeared to be an eternity finally came to an
end and a short moment of silence was followed by the spectators screaming with
excitement.
"I think they are done now." St Magdalene said and tried to comfort Bartender
but to her surprise he looked more burdened than sad.

Bartender stayed in the arena to watch Farmor's duel to keep her title against
Mandolin Wind. Even though Farmor was knocked off her feet by Mandolin Wind's first
attack, the fight ended as Bartender had planned and it marked a perfect ending to a
very successful night for him. His face showed no sign of joy or pride, though, as
he made his way through the avenue of congratulating spectators and reporters on his
way out of the arena. Bartender had one thing on his mind and one thing only--a
question that he repeated to himself over and over again. "Who do you send after a
bloodthirsty and, as of now, immortal fighter to avenge White Lightning's death?"
There actually was an obvious answer to the question but it scared the hell out of
him.
Bartender slowed his pace to let Feel the Buzz catch up with him. "You have to
go after him," he said. "It's my only option." Feel the Buzz nodded with a firm
look on his face but Bartender could see that behind his stern facade, Feel the Buzz
was truly scared.

I doubt MURSKA will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the difference,
as ON THE ROCKS is pushed out of top team by URBAN JUNGLE, who came from 2nd with a
2-3-0 this turn. And let's see, SECOND WATCH fought ST MAGDALENE and gained 19
points and contributed to SEA DOGS' 5-0-0. MANDOLIN WIND has lost to FEEL THE BUZZ,
falling 13 points, while helping make URBAN JUNGLE a 2-3-0 turn. And all eyes were
on VEXED VIKING this turn as he ascended to the throne of Duelmaster. MURSKA has a
new victor! Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources
that The Dragon's Hangover uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. URBAN JUNGLE has cause to stand tall, as they were MURSKA's
most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding URBAN
JUNGLE more than any other team we find ON THE ROCKS. MURSKA, are we going to
accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior this turn was
CHILDREN OF LLYR's warrior EVINDAL. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster! FROSTBITE of URBAN JUNGLE had better have a good reason for challenging
down 8 points in a challenge which she won. I thought FROSTBITE showed great skill
and promise when she won victory over EVINDAL. All right, so I slept through it!
Big deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover
or hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
