DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
They told me the title would feel different once you held it. Heavier, perhaps. A
thing you wear rather than a thing you earn. I have found the opposite to be true.
Each time I step onto those sands and the crowd's noise becomes a single wall of
sound, the weight falls away entirely. There is only work to be done. Now I look
forward.
The Commission has not extended an invitation to the Advanced Games, which means
someone will be coming for this title. I do not know who yet. It may be Sapphire,
precise and patient with that Aimed Blow of hers. It may be Bladedancer, who has been
cutting through opponents with unsettling efficiency. Whoever steps onto those sands
across from me will have prepared. They will have studied my fourteen wins and my five
losses and found something they believe they can exploit. Let them look. Every turn I
spend in Jhans is another turn to sharpen what is already sharp. I will be ready.
To my teammates in Iron Tigers -- Mazrim, losing a close match to Sapphire is no
shame. She is the top Aimed Blow artist in this arena for a reason. Study her. You
will face her again. Hador, your loss to Halonor was the kind of lesson that costs
nothing but pride if you learn from it. You have the tools. Use them with more
economy. Dewclaw, Fern beat you in four minutes of crowd-pleasing brutality -- do not
give them that satisfaction twice. And young Soleg: one fight, one win. A clean
beginning. Build on it methodically.
The Duelmaster's seat is not a place of comfort. It is a target. Every warrior in the
Challenger Champions tier is sharpening steel with my name in mind. Sapphire.
Bladedancer. Ark will want a rematch. Halonor is rising fast. I do not fear that. I
was built by Iron Tigers to endure it.
Two weeks. I will still be here.
-- Dynit Duelmaster, Jhans Arena
Iron Tigers
SPY REPORT
I once tracked a Rocanian saboteur through three days of wind-blasted dunes, his trail
as thin as a whisper and twice as deceitful. He left just enough sign to be followed,
but always where he wanted me. A broken twig here, a heel scrap there, or a piece of
barely noticeable debris to keep me following.
On the fourth night, I realized the truth too late. I wasn't the hunter. I was the
message. They found what was left of him at dawn, and what was left of the ambush he
had set for me. Turns out, even the clever sometimes forget that someone else is
watching the trail.
That, dear readers, is Jhans this turn. Everyone is setting traps, and just enough
warriors are stepping into them to keep the sands fed.
Dynit of Iron Tigers holds the throne with the steady patience of a veteran scout.
Sapphire came hunting glory and found only steel. No misdirection or trickery in this
bout, just a clean defeat by our Duelmaster. Dynit isn't baiting opponents, but
appears to be daring them to challenge him. Who will test their mettle and their luck
against him next turn?
Neon Knights surge to the top, moving like a coordinated unit, sweeping a ridge line.
Bladedancer, Dreamsinger, and Plumcatcher continue to prove their worth with solid
wins. Iron Tigers remain a constant force in the arena, picking engagements carefully.
Hador delivered the kind of blow that I respect the most, the one you don't see coming
until it is already written in the sand. Saint-Chamond was dismantled, not just
defeated. That was not brute force, but someone reading the battlefield three moves
ahead.
The Dark Arena was not as effective as in previous turns. Two warriors RETURNED from
the fights by torchlight. Varkos came back like a ghost with unfinished business,
while Average Joe was anything but average when he killed Kobold Enforcer. Others were
not so fortunate, but to see two emerge from certain death in a single turn bears
recording.
The middle of the pack is where Jhans breathes. It is where the war is neither won nor
lost, but constantly contested. Stumble Stalker outlasted Fame in a drawn-out grind.
Stingray fought like a cornered predator, tearing down Fern. Are they herbivores?
Last, Tenebrax and Spindy turned their bout into something closer to a battlefield
skirmish than a duel. No glory here, just survival.
Closing out with some arena tidbits, I observed that Iron Damsels were the most
avoided team. Spirit Totems avoided them the most. Saint-Chamond looks to be our most
challenged gladiator, and you will note we have already covered that match. Wrugy
killed Lita, taking his kill total to two.
In Rocanis, the saboteur thought he controlled the trail. He left signs, shaped the
pursuit, and believed himself unseen. But he forgot the oldest rule of the hunt: If
you can see the trail, so can someone else. Jhans is full of hunters right now. But
more than a few are leaving tracks they don't realize are beling followed. And I
promise you this, someone is always watching the sand behind you.
