DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Now doesn't that wasn't part of the plan, but I'm not complaining! So this is what
this seat looks like!! I like it! I like it a lot.
Okay, what should I say... I guess I need to focus. If I can win the next two fights,
I should have my invite in hand with a .500 win rate before heading to the Isle. (The
Boss says his sources confirmed my name is being thrown around in certain circles
there.) I'd like to get ratings in my last two skill areas which have none, but I
would rather get to the Isle!!
Alright, I'm going to crochet some prizes for my prep team so we can all celebrate
together!
Talk to you all later!!

SPY REPORT
There are habits a soldier never quite loses. I still count exits when I enter a room.
I notice high ground without meaning to. And when several armed people begin moving at
once, some old part of me starts sorting them into formations, threats, and
opportunities. Jhans makes that particular habit difficult to suppress.
Turn 1029 opened with a change of command at the top. Lavitros of Wolf and Man took
the Duelmaster?s throne by dispatching Saint-Chamond in a one-minute title fight.
There was nothing subtle about it. Saint-Chamond entered with experience and
recognition to spare, but Lavitros broke through quickly and decisively. In the field,
officers sometimes spend hours studying a defensive position only to watch someone
kick the gate off its hinges. This was one of those times.
Iron Tigers made the biggest territorial gain. They gained 30 points and returned to
the rankings with a 3-2-0 turn. Hador?s victory over Halonor was clean, while Arlen
and Jiroe handled the Mordant Deserter and Convicted Thief without ceremony. Mazrim
and Dewclaw were less fortunate against Wolf and Man, but a unit does not need every
skirmish to go its way to advance the line.
The Whispers remain the formation everyone else should be watching. Their 3-2-0 turn
keeps them atop the three-turn standings at 10-5-0. Ciphros improved to a spotless 7-0
after beating the Rirorni Spy, while Subrosa bloodied Fern and Nyxaris outlasted
Indiana Boy. Murmurio and Silens both fell to arena standbys, proving that even a
strong line can lose men to hazards everyone thinks they already understand. Scouts
learn that lesson early. Familiar ground is often where discipline gets lazy.
Dark Abundance also had reason to be pleased. Vasilko remains the arena?s recognition
leader at 148 points and dismantled Stingray in one brutal minute. Syan-Lin took
considerably longer, grinding Little Willie down over sixteen minutes. I have spent
nights on reconnaissance patrols that felt shorter. It was not pretty, and apparently
the crowd did not enjoy it, but endurance has won more battles than spectacle ever
did.
Sonja continued doing what veterans do: surviving, adapting, and making the younger
fighters work for everything. She defeated Sapphire in four minutes and remains Jhans?
overall popularity leader. Indiana Boy earned this turn?s favorite honors despite
losing a six-minute fight to Nyxaris. Crowds are strange that way. Soldiers usually
cheer whoever brings the water wagon.
Clan Battleaxe was the arena?s most avoided team, with Spirit Totems avoiding more
than anyone else. Some call avoidance cowardice. Scouts know better. Choosing where
not to fight can be every bit as important as choosing where to attack. Of course,
eventually someone has to test the position. Otherwise, you are not gathering
intelligence. You are merely staying home.
One final note for the campaign ledger: Saint-Chamond will depart for Advanced
Duelmasters after next turn. The throne slipped away this week, but twenty-three wins
and a long tour through Jhans leave their own kind of record. Not every veteran
marches out carrying the standard. Some simply march out having survived long enough
to know what it weighs.
