TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"Yes, I'll hold."
Dahlia held the earpiece awkwardly against her ear, staring out the small window; dawn
crested distant over the horizon, the Jhans Arena silhouetted against the crimson fire
of the rising sun.
80 minutes. She had been on hold for over 80 minutes. Not counting the almost 2 hours
it took to actually reach a real person. This being the second crime in as many days.
The first was laid out before her, 4 large pieces, fractured steel -- cracked,
useless.
A shattered longsword. A shattered ego.
"That's correct, Emu's Strain... No! Strain, not Stain." This aggrevation was not
helping to assuage her recent loss in the title fight for Duelmaster of Jhans. "Emu.
Yes E-M-U... no, not the bird. He is a manager in the... listen Sir, my weapon
shattered, a weapon that was approved by the gladiatorial commission and I think you
owe me a... FINE, I'll hold."
Resting against the table, leaning onto her hip, her own crimson fire crested and
thumped in her head. Just what she needed. Dahlia and the shattered pieces stared unto
each other, blaming each other, mocking... Four pieces were all that were worth saving
after her longsword exploded after Leman connected with a crit parry. One of her most
favorite, a gift from her... her... well, she didn't know exactly where it came from.
And now...
"Yes, I am still here. No, not the Iron Throne, I am with the Iron Council Guild."
Dhalia rolled her large, chocolate-brown eyes. She was starting to realize that this
was a waste of time, lost and never to be seen again.
"Yes, no, I understand that the warranty has long since expired, but you don't
understand. The damn thing broke. It broke in the middle of a fight! A fight I then
lost!"
Dahlia shifted the earpiece. Her opposite hand twirling dirty blond hair around her
fingers, nervously pulling and tugging.
"Look mister, your sword did not live up to my expectations. You owe me a new sword."
Listening intently to the other side of the conversation, "Yes, you do!" She shifted
back and forth from one foot to the other. The conversation spiraling away from her.
Her resolve was cracking and fracturing, as her sword had earlier.
"YES, YOU DO!" Slamming her hand down on the table, hitting one of the jagged edges
and cutting the palm of her hand.
"You do too!"
"Look, this is going nowhere. Is there someone else I can talk... a manager or a
supervisor?"
"Oh yeah? Look, your sword broke, fella, you owe me a ne-- hello? Hello?"
Slamming down the earpiece, Dahlia stormed out of the barracks and headed over to the
Lucas Lounge.
The Lounge never closed.
Once Dahlia went in, she didn't plan on coming out anytime soon.
SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
JHANS brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, EMU'S STRAIN, since IRON
DAMSELS took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps up,
NEON KNIGHTS, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4 in the
rankings? IRON DAMSELS turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 1st place rank in the listings
this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch
CLAN BATTLEAXE II's heads swell from their 3-1-1 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big
shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see DAHLIA win
a fight and gain 18 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FAITH IN CAUSATION beat SIGNY and
SIGNY lost 13 points. You're breakin' my heart. And it's out with the old, in with
the new, as OBSIDIA takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster.
Heh, heh. Lucas Lounge, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they
get this stuff? From JHANS' trash dumps?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's
the big D? NEON KNIGHTS was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like CLAN BATTLEAXE avoided them the most
this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm
frightfully impressed, CAYAHUANCA was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Whoa! I'll even buy RAPINE a drink tonight! Anyone
who can come back from the Dark Arena, I want to be on his good side! And one more
turn will show if CLAN BATTLEAXE II can successfully bloodfeud that elusive DAHLIA
over SECHUL. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain
nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
