"Thank you, Josephine." Chess Master weighed the small bag of gold in his hand, smiling at the warm, fuzzy feeling it brought to his heart. He pulled a bronze coin from his purse and flipped it to the young lady behind the betting counter, who deftly caught it with a warm smile and an almost believable "Thank you!" A few steps away from the counter, in a quiet spot away from the press of the crowd, Chess Master took a long draw from his pipe, enjoying the familiar buzzing sensation it gave him. The smell of the pipe, the taste of the tobacco, the fresh air blowing off the great Ardiventi river, the view almost to the opposite bank, and of course the feel of the gold purse all made him feel alive and well. Nothing could ruin this day. "Chess Master," he heard from a voice behind him, "you have been very lucky today." A muffled, "you can't talk your way out of this one" happened more or less at the same time roughly sixteen strong hands grabbed his arms, pinning them to the side, and the musty smelling bag was deftly placed over his head. He felt himself being dragged--fairly quickly, and a little more roughly than was strictly necessary --down a corridor and some steps he was all too familiar with. He gave up resistance, which was futile anyway, and more or less cooperated with his own kidnapping until he was dropped into a chair somewhere in the bowels of the arena and the bag was taken off his head. Chess Master looked around, doing his best to ignore the two goons who had brought him here. They weren't important, anyway. Mere pawns in a game he was playing against an as yet unnamed opponent, although even pawns could prove to be powerful if properly positioned and part of an overarching strategy. He hoped this wasn't the case here, but the Chess Master knew all too well that hope was not the best strategy in any game. "I know this place. You should put out the 'Bingo!' sign." There was a shuffling sound, and Chess Master tried to turn around to see who was sitting behind him. This maneuver was rewarded with a 'gentle' cuff from Pawn #1. "The old ladies are probably lining up outside, waiting for the free buffet." He got a chuckle, and another gentle rebuff from Pawn #2, for his trouble. And when I say gentle, well, you understand. "You worry too much about other people," came the heavily accented reply. "You should worry about yourself. Especially now." "Well, that didn't work," Chess Master thought to himself. So he tried a different tactic: Silence. He waited for whatever Shewish Giant was in charge of this mission to show himself. "I find senseless violence to be the answer to most of life's problems," the hulking brute stepped around Chess Master, showing himself to be of disappointingly small stature, considering the position he had gotten the Ardiventi manager into. There was something about the way he dressed that didn't seem right. The dark grey tunic, the black cloak, the soft boots. That could blend into any crowd, but the small emblem over his heart was unfamiliar to Chess Master. Still, it didn't hurt to take a stab at guessing it. "The Black Tower?" Apparently, he guessed right, if the blow that sent him tumbling ass over tea kettle across the room was any indication. Chess Master did his best to black out, but unfortunately today was not his day, after all. "Once again, your warriors have cost me a lot of money. Money that I had promised to certain friends who were, shall we say, less than understanding when I told them these things happen." The Ardiventi Half-Elf punctuated his remarks with kicks that would have been effective, even if Chess Master wasn't tied up, beaten down, and wondering if he was going to get his pipe back. Or if he'd have any teeth left to clench it with. "You are going to pay me back. And here's how you're going to do it. Your entire team will match up with Wrathmen for the remainder of the week. It has already been arranged." Chess Master felt his chair being placed upright, the ropes untied. "Because I know you are a man of integrity, I would never ask you to throw a fight. However, if any of your team wins these bouts... well, we know where you live, don't we?" The two brutes opened the door, and walked out, pushing past the local beat writer from the Ardiventi Free Press, "Foam Finger Guy," and three blue haired ladies who looked hungry. The elf turned and smiled. "I believe you are late for your press conference." SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. Say good-bye to WE GOT GAME, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the WRATHMEN stable. Hey everybody, watch out for TYNARAE, who flew up 31 points in the rankings after mashing CASPER JOHN like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. ROCKSOCK JONES lost to UNCLE LEROY and drops 14 points. Well, if ya don't shows up at the laundromat, ya can'ts wash yer clothes. KASPAROV did not fight this week so his title was forfeit. In front of all the crowds, TYNARAE took the Duelmaster's crown for hers own. I give the bum two weeks. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARDIVENT arena. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid WE GOT GAME, please raise you hand. Wow. Does ARDIVENT really have that many liars? For those of you who like math, try this one: WE GOT GAME + Weapons That go Boom = FANDILS + Avoid City. And who is this ROCKSOCK JONES you ask, with 70 points and a 11-26-1 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, LADY ANNABELLE went after JODI, who was higher by 21 points. Well, when the dust settled, LADY ANNABELLE was killed by JODI. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! Proving again that ARDIVENT is not rated G, TYNARAE of the WRATHMEN slew the warrior CASPER JOHN in a rather bloody bout. Let's look for a bloodfeud. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TYNARAE 4401 11 1 2 120 WRATHMEN (387) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -KASPAROV 4450 12 3 1 113 WE GOT GAME (289) -MMMMBUHHH 4292 8 4 3 99 YOU DON'T SAY! You can't be my uncle; he doesn't play chess. -- Uncle Leroy Side note: Actually it was my Godfather and Uncle Leroy Miller who introduced me to chess and, in the old days, PBM chess. I loved waiting for those postcards with opponent chess moves and playing 5 or 6 opponents at a distance at one time. Those were the days. (pre RSI) -- The Consortium boss Scorpio? THE Scorpio from Aruak City and other parts unstated? That Scorpio?! Welcome, my friend, to Ardivent The Arena Of Red Sands. May your stay prove long and fruitful. -- Fandil The Wise, Consortium affiliated Matthias -- Maybe you aren't always THAT good? This time we random and this time I win. What does that tell me? -- Casper John My, my; troubles here in Ardivent? I surely hope they are not linked to those in Willaf. I do. -- WOF Nope. At least not directly, who knows what digging might uncover. Black Chaos -- It was MY day. I think my pinks outplayed your blacks. -- Mildred Leona (Whose favorite color is really lavender) Lady Annabelle -- It was great tussling with you. Let's go beat up on the men, however. That seems like more fun. -- Jodi Health. Humility. Honor. The Red Sands await. -- Fandil The Wise Baerus -- You seem a decent fellow, I would hate to have killed you. -- Capablanca Solaarrin -- All that extra fight experience ought to count for something, don't you think? -- Nimzovich Tynarae -- Now THAT was a surprise! -- Kasparov Feheadrae -- I thought we agreed before the fight, "NOT THE FACE!" That's how I make my money, honey. -- Guy Brooke -- Thank you for breaking up the monotony of fighting nothing but Wrathmen. You are MUCH nicer. -- Alekhine Fandil -- Sorry, no energy or time to write this week. Next time, I hope. -- Jorja Ruy Lopez -- What? A word ending with "s" without apostrophe is not a possessive, especially when it's a personal name. I believe it may originally, several generations ago, been something with more letters, something like "Lawrence." A ridiculous spelling for a simple name. -- Lorens Klu P.S. The ability of some people, mentioning no names, to get confused by a simple name amazes me. One of our colleague teams is called the Cardow Hunters, and people keep asking in apparent seriousness what cardows are and how you hunt them. And I suppose if a team were called the Green Bay Packers or some such, they'd be asked whether green bays were easier to pack than red ones. Pshaw. Three-two for us, because we drew three standbys. Not glorious, but who wants glorious when we can be alive instead? -- Rocksock Jones Nothing much in this town it seems. A lot of farming around here, looks like. -- Scorpio Somebody's got to farm, unless you want to eat nothing but fish and grasses. Maybe I should invest in opening up a vegetarian tavern, eh? -- Scorpio *on his 5th shot of bourbon* Fandil the Wise? -- That jackass Kennelworht back in Aruak City, you brother? I hear there's two more brothers as well. Well, your inbred cousins the Producer and Generalissimo Puerco really sucked. -- Scorpio *on his 9th shot of bourbon* Where's Assur, the Brash Bros dude? I think I'm in two arenas he's in. Like Noblish all over again. -- Scorpio *smiles* LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS DEE DAA unbelievably bested LORENS KLU in a crowd pleasing 5 minute Challenge fight.
