TEAM SPOTLIGHT
~ Full Circle: New Manager, Same Management ~
The powerfully built, noseless man stood at the threshold of the converted warehouse,
noting the wide painted stripes on the exterior had not fully dried. The banner above
read "NIL MERG'S CIRCUS OF WONDERS" just as he had requested, but the "SPONSORED BY
THE CIRCLE ARMORIES" directly underneath was larger and more distracting than he
imagined when Dokar made it part of their agreement. Along the upper ridge of the
structure, banners displayed the major acts but one was covered in a black curtain to
reflect the recent tragedy. As he slowly strode in, he tried to envision his adopted
father's circus tent layered on top of the improvised amphitheater being constructed
inside. A house of whimsical entertainment sponsored by a weapon merchant and a
bloodsport, and it didn't even look right. Was this still the dream he held tight for
so many years, or was this a compromise he would come to detest?
The former gladiator let his eyes adjust to the dim interior, noting that the lamps
had remained extinguished to save oil while the fading late afternoon light still
leaked in from the upper windows. He could clearly see workmen scuttling around and
the principal four remaining entertainers paired off on opposite sides of the
structure. To his right a colorfully dressed dwarf and a blindfolded Ratani woman in
the beads and tassels of a wanderer were juggling a random assortment of spheres and
blades between each other. The man gritted his teeth as he realized the diminutive man
from the Khriatrin Mountains had his eyes closed above his impeccably trimmed beard,
meaning neither performer was actually looking at what they were tossing to each
other. Shaking his head with distress, and a bit of envy, as well as not wanting to
cause a tragic interruption he moved left towards the other side of the wooden
stadium.
The other two were a fellow Mirani Adantri, the shorter southern major branch of the
Empire that foreigners considered "more exotic" and a second dwarf. Unlike the
curiously gangly example juggling across the hall, this dwarf was more traditionally
stocky and rugged and pitted from harsh work mining, and with a flowing braided beard
the color of rust beneath his bald head. The banner outside identified him as Glurd
the Strongman, which made Max nil Merg, having filled that role himself what seemed
like decades ago, take an immediate liking to him. The dwarf and the Mirani were
seemingly conducting an inventory of recently arrived animals, exotic and mundane, and
the cacophonous scene finally provided something of the circus feel the newcomer had
been desperately searching for. The taller of the two looked up from beside a large
wooden cage containing what appeared to be a very large and particularly upset duck.
His smile widened about his protective tamer's leathers, and he smiled wider than his
face seemed to comfortably support. "Oh, I recognize you from the posters from the Dal
Shang arena. You, sir, I hear, are to be our new source of management! And I am Alad
nen Cofa, humble maintainer of the beastly, now at your service. I see you also wish
to keep the dangerous dis...play of Dice and Sae over there at more than arm's reach."
The dwarf chuckled and smirked at the stilted speech of his companion, his beard
twitching with mirth.
He nodded to the two in turn "Alad. Glurd." He paused, "Do you actually prefer Glurd
in private company?" The dwarf smiled again, not wider but taller to reveal more of
his perfect almost sculpted-looking teeth. "When your... investor... hired me and
Diceus over there he suggested simpler names would be easier on the crowd and... if
luck goes against us... would be a wall against dishonor to the Halls of Khra. So no
need for you or the crowds to call me Glurthdrax." The arriving manager twisted
inwardly at this, recalling the conversation that christened him Max Nilmerg instead
of Maxholm nil Merg. He muttered, "Well, if you change your minds..." and looked over
the fauna from across the region to avoid matching gazes uncomfortably. Finally, he
gathered himself enough to change the subject. "This is an impressive array. A
melgreth, several dire beasts, and... this loudly quacking thing that keeps staring at
me. I don't recall seeing its like before."
The three heard a gasp and a panicked curse from back across the hall, coming from the
dwarf juggler with the green and red mohawk "Sae! You can't just stop catching and
walk off mid display! I might have hit you!" The now approaching woman scoffed and
smiled, waving her hand back towards him dismissively. She spoke with a husky,
analytical voice. "It isn't quacking, at least not entirely. I could hear it across
the hall. There is a click behind it, something like an old Jadir code dialect used in
the mines." Everyone present looked confused and disturbed, particularly the beast
trainer. "It is beyond reason you can be expressing that this bird is speaking as the
Jadir do?" The woman shook her head, her exposed lower face assuming an expression of
derision, "Not the entire Jadir spoken language. Just the clicking." As if to
demonstrate she began to make a series of sounds with her tongue, short and long, loud
and soft. The towering duck, easily the size of an average man, froze immediately and
began to squawk back in sounds that to the others seemed no different than before,
just more focused. But after several moments of the bewildering exchange Sae r'Pyn
stepped back and crossed her arms, "So to make a long story short, she says her name
is Shan, and she has a very harrowing tale. But most pressing is her desire to get
assurances that we don't plan to roast her for dinner." Max nil Merg paused for a
moment, scratching his cleanly shaved chin thoughtfully, then laughed so loudly the
rafters shook. "Now this." he thought, "Now this is feeling like a circus."
* * *
Hours had passed. Two dwarves, three humans, and a large bird had gathered around a
table piled with food and drink, though conspicuously little meat. Sae had maintained
most of the communication, though the others had started to pick out some of the more
common sounds hidden behind the quacking. Through her new interpreter, Shan Ya had
told them how she had been the odd one out from the time she was a duckling, craving
adventure rather than placidly hiding in the deep hidden ponds of her people. She
ignored the warnings of the elders that the featherless had been only interested in
capturing and cooking them for at least a thousand winters, and when she did finally
set out ignoring their council she had been captured almost immediately. The others
around the table comforted her, saying she was among friends now and they would try
and arrange for her to get back to her people in time. Well, most of them did, as Alad
continued to eye her suspiciously and suspect it was all a ruse at his expense. As the
feathered creature grew more comfortable, she began to turn the conversation towards
more questions about her hosts and the curious place her desire for adventure had
brought her.
SPY REPORT
I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. JADE MOUNTAIN needs a spyreport." Oh, well. MVP award for
BIG BIRD? FRIENDLIES' proud of him after beating EDGE and getting 30 points. Talk
about yer major upsets! EDGE's match with BIG BIRD cost him a loss of 48 points!
And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome
DRASK INSON. Aren't RAGING LION CLAN proud. (Oh, my.) Is the Duelmaster really
being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. DARK TIDE was the most avoided team. Is a 171-156-12 record really
that scary? I don't know what FULL CIRCLE's been doing. They certainly haven't been
accepting many fights from DARK TIDE, that's fer sher. Can PI KAPPA PI'S' ANNIE be
more popular than me? She was challenged the most, but is that really the same?
DRASK INSON is being unfair. He's challenged down 23 against SALLY. I don't know
why they let this stuff go on. (I'd better shut up) DRASK INSON beat SALLY. No
surprise about that. Really I'm not surprised DRASK INSON would do such a scummy
thing, either.
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you?
