SPY REPORT
Welcome back to The Spire! Huard DePriest here, skulking through the alleys of
Shadowspire with a cheap cigar and the growing suspicion that Turn 502 was personally
engineered to shorten my lifespan. Five hundred and two turns, and this old murder-pit
is still cranking.
You tell a lot about an arena by the smell after the fights. This week's aroma? Burned
ale, dragon blood, wet parchment, and panic. Panic especially. The scribes were so
busy writing obituary notices that the ink vendors are considering expansion.
First things, as always, Sky Bison remains Duelmaster after beating poor George Eliot
like a tavern stool in a drunken bar brawl. One minute is all it took to reclaim the
throne. Eliot showed up carrying a book and an interesting theory about winning. Sky
Bison brought a weapon. It doesn't take a scholar to know who was going to win that
fight.
And speaking of taverns (or was I just thinking about one), the boys from Ale House
Mercs went 5-0 this turn. Somewhere in Shadowspire, a brewer is carving little victory
notches into a keg with tears in his eyes. Molson squeezed Charmin, Calypso
obliterated Princess Leia, and newcomer, Voodoo Ranger, arrived like a drunken prophet
bearing violence instead of a rhyming quatrain about goats or questionable women.
All well and good, but the real storm rolled in with Dragonbane Guild. Ten wins over
the last three turns, and they are climbing like a thief over a chapel wall. Whipsicle
cracked Misti Skye, while Batterskull handed Fluvius Cotta his first loss. Then we
have Paradarshin, well, he decided that subtlety was overrated. Long story made short,
Jimmy Crackcorn is dead.
He isn't off in a bad way. He is not retired. He is not simply defeated. He is dead.
Butchered by Paradarshin in the kind of fight that makes even the veteran bookmakers
stop chewing long enough to wince. I am sure the Big Lake Solutions crew is already
muttering about revenge in corners dark enough to grow mushrooms. Smart money says
Paradarshin should probably sleep with a sword and shield under the covers.
It was a good turn for many guilds, and Clan Longbeard was another fortunate troupe.
They went 5-0-1 and drank enough afterward to threaten local grain supplies. Four of
the Longbeards had eventful days on the sands, but there was Johan. Have you ever seen
a man walk into the Dark Arena with a smile on his face? Me either, until today. I
thought he was insane, or already dead and hadn't noticed yet. Johan marched in,
killed Dark Champion, and walked back out wearing that special expression fighters get
after surviving something that was both thrilling and genuinely life-threatening.
Will it be enough to change his ways in the arena? Will Visionist send him back? He
will either become a legend or start hearing the Dark Arena whisper his name every
cycle. Who knows, it could be both!
A final note before I disappear into the evening fog with my unpaid bar tabs. Thomas
Mann graduates to the Isle, and the old scribblers lasted long enough to earn the
respect and honor of a Lord Protector. Until next time, this is Huard DePriest
