All About the AA and Den

Arcane watched the gladiators of Search the Sky as they went through the second
phase of their morning regimen. Phase one, the 'warm-up', had started with a quick
two-mile run, followed by a catalogue of calisthenics and some rope-climbing,
completed with a brief rest period. The fighters were now going through a series of
weapon drills.
Arcane tilted his narrow face toward the cloud-strewn sky. The sun's angle
indicated that the weapons training had almost an hour to go before the next rest
period. The gladiators shuffled and lunged in the sand pit, keeping time with Havoc's
terse commands. Arcane nodded to himself. The warriors were diligent and seemed well
motivated; he had to give Havoc that. His presence was palpable, an ominous and
powerful pressure that every gladiator, even the 'mentally-challenged Eclipse, clearly
sensed and dreaded. Arcane's thin lips twisted in a brief sneer. Havoc was moving
with a cool, deliberate air, chiding and guiding (and sometimes shoving or pulling)
the fighters into their choreographed motions. He ignored The Kid, who stood on the
edge of the pit, slender arms crossed and a growing irritation displayed in the bright
glow of his eyes.
Arcane turned, his yellow woolen cloak swirling behind him as he glided toward
the guild's office. His gait was smooth and effortless; his polished sandals left no
print or scuff mark behind him. Once inside, The Kid slipped into one of the two
padded leather wingback chairs facing the large, scarred desk in the corner. He
closed his eyes, deepened and slowed his breathing, and willed himself to wait
"Well, what is it THIS time?" Havoc growled as he stormed into the room a few
minutes later. He slammed the sturdy door in place as he went to the cushioned desk
chair and threw himself into its wide arms. "I'm tryin' to get us some wins, Kid. I
don't need these little pep talks--they just slow me down."
The Arcane Kid opened his eyes and took a deep sigh. "I wouldn't interrupt you
during a training session if I didn't feel it was important."
"Ha! Ya come and go as ya please, and we both know it!"
Arcane shook his head and rolled his radiant eyes toward the thick rafters.
"Whatever." He somehow produced a large manila envelope and tossed it onto the desk
in front of Havoc. "Thought you might be interested in some light reading material."
With a quizzical frown, Havoc opened the envelope and emptied it onto the
desktop. Over a dozen scraps of linen paper, most no bigger than twice the span of
his calloused palm, flew out into an untidy heap onto the table. "What's this? Otto
still tryin' to get more customers with his 'Buy One/Get One Free' coupons? Bobbi
told me about some of the 'Specials' and I-"
Havoc paused; his nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply. "Where'd ya get this
stuff, Kid?"
"Oh, it wasn't that hard," replied Arcane with a small smile. "It's not exactly
top secret material, after all."
"Yeah, but ---" Havoc waved a beefy hand at the pile. "What's the point? Why
"The priests and mortuary services of Shadowspire are experiencing a significant
increase in business. Havoc, you realize that all this turmoil in the arena is
affecting us too, do you not? I thought it would be prudent to find out as much as we
can about various managers. It might come in handy."
Havoc nodded absently as he pulled a random scrap of paper out of the
disorganized stack and studied it. "Says here Den is a hand over six feet tall, has
short brown hair, blue eyes, beard... Hey!" Havoc glared at The Kid. "Isn't this
one of the guys we've seen regular at the Night Fights?"
Arcane nodded and steepled his fingertips in front of his face, resting his
elbows on the broad padded armrests. "Oh yes; Den is definitely a regular patron of
the Dark Arena's spectacle."
Havoc's brows furrowed. "Huh. Wonder what's goin' on there?" He dropped the
paper to the side of the small mound and picked up another. "Says Den likes to keep in
shape. He exercises regularly with his warriors, wears scalemail in public, and --
'Prides himself on his perfect white teeth'? Is this stuff REAL?"
"Oh yes. I've made a few discrete inquiries. Apparently he has many full-sized
mirrors set up throughout his guild house. It would be impossible to sneak up behind
him because there are mirrors on every wall! Also, he sends one of his minions to a
small laundry service once a week for a flask of boiled and strained ox urine. Makes a
paste out of it, I believe."
"Quite a powerful whitening agent. Good for fresh blood stains and yellow teeth,
apparently. Did you get to the part where he has been observed obsessing about
keeping his fingernails clean?"
"Seriously?" Havoc dropped the paper and pawed through the small pile next to it.
"Yeah, here it is." He scanned the next slip of paper with meticulous care as he
leaned back. When he was finished, Havoc tossed the paper onto the desk and dropped
his hands into his lap. "What's this about 'psychological analysis'?"
"Oh, that's not important," replied Arcane. He leaned forward and sorted through
the disorganized heap of paper scraps. He pulled out a paper with ink-smeared edges
and leaned back again. "But here's something you might be interested in. His
playmates include Crambus, Philthy Phil, and Shadowthrone, among others."
     "Who the heck are THEY?"
"Allies, Havoc. They formed a small club; they call themselves the Allied Axis."
     "Huh. Kinda catchy."
"Alliteration is a powerful, if underutilized, tool."
"Yeah, whatever." Havoc scratched his grizzled flattop and frowned. "So they
watch each other's back in the arena, right? Kill one of 'em, ya gotta deal with
three teams comin' at ya instead of just one? That it?"
"Something like that. They're headquartered on Niytyole Island, so I don't think
we have to worry about a strong presence in Shadowspire, but I'm not entirely
"Whatta ya mean, Kid?! 'Not entirely certain'?!"
Arcane shrugged his narrow shoulders. "First, we don't bother to keep up with
the managers of Shadowspire. You didn't want to spend the time on it, remember? So
we don't know the names of all the managers, nor do we know (other than a handful of
exceptions) which managers run which teams. Therefore, the Allied Axis might be
present and we simply aren't aware of it. Besides all that, membership in this mutual
admiration society tends to wax and wane. Several members have been graced with a
gold-tinged membership card, only to soon find themselves promptly dismissed."
"So ya think Den might be recruitin' in Shadowspire? Trying to create a strong
presence?" Havoc groaned, shook his head, and clicked his teeth. "Ya know, I don't
like it. Sounds like just another bunch of managers gettin' together to hold hands
and sing songs in the dark," Havoc growled.
Arcane nodded. "Reminds one of Darque Ages, Pray the Gods, and the Cult of
Bacchus, does it not? A fickle group, in any case." The Kid placed one slip of paper
on top of the small pile and tapped it with his a couple of manicured fingers. "Take
note, Havoc! This is important! Their group charter specifically calls for them to
spread hate and torment amongst the other managers."
"Well, hot damn! At least Den 's good at THAT."
"Yes, so it seems. The Allied Axis pride themselves on their propaganda and
their ability to stir up controversy in whatever arena they occupy."
     "Ya mean: 'infest'."
Arcane shrugged. "As you wish. You may have noticed that lately the newsletters
have been littered with sophomoric, ego-driven slurs and derogatory propaganda. Also,
in the market places and taverns, there have been a multitude of miscellaneous insults
heaped upon one manager or the other."
"Yeah," Havoc nodded. "Bobbi was talkin' about the mood at Otto's goin' a little
dark, lately. Seems somebody painted some weird slogans on the curb outside."
     "Uncomplimentary slogans, I'm sure?"
"Yes, things are heating up throughout Shadowspire.
"Yeah, yeah." Havoc poked the small mound of papers. He pulled out a crumpled
piece and studied it. "Sounds to me like these guys just like attention."
"Possibly. Although, Den seems to despise many managers; why would he encourage
their attention?"
"Why does a bear crap in the woods?"
The Arcane Kid frowned at Havoc.
     "Because he's a bear, Kid!"
"Amusing and insightful as ever, I see. Well, what do you think about Den's
accusations of Shadowspire's charter violations?"
"What violations? Like, 'don't let yerself get your team killed?'" Havoc
"Well, have you forgotten that Search the Sky is our second team in Shadowspire?"
"I ain't forgotten it, Kid. Did ya have to bring it up?"
"In any case, Den seems to despise many managers; he claims he has a good reason
to do so. Also, he's been making a lot of noise about the 'No Tourney Arena' and its
charter. I'm still trying to find out more about the violations he claims to have
"Ain't he worried about makin' himself a target?"
The Kid offered a cool smile. "Den is no stranger to the down-challenge,
"Givin' or receiving?" "Both. Which puts us in an awkward position, doesn't it?"
"Whatta ya talkin' about? We don't down-challenge unless it's a Blood Feud or we
got a fighter with a lot less experience we're just tryin to sharpen up a little. We
ain't got nothin' to do with this Allied Axis nonsense!"
"True, but we do support the concept of the 'No Tourney Arena'. We've stayed out
of tournament play for years; it's Basic arena competition that keeps us motivated to
participate in the gladiator business."
"So what, Kid? Ya sayin' that we gotta follow along with Den?"
"Oh no, I'm not going that far." Arcane pushed his chair back and rose. "Just
look over those reconnaissance reports and let's try to keep up with the on-going
Blood Feuds. I don't want to get sucked up into that mess. Also, please note that
Den and his playmates actually aided the Lady Greywand against the Riorni hordes. She
gave them possession of one of the frontier fortresses as a reward."
"So what? What does that mean? They're just a bunch o' boot lickin' bozos?"
"No, I don't get that impression; their warriors' fighting and deeds of bravery
during that conflict are a matter of record." The Kid moved to the door. "Like 'em
or hate them, the Allied Axis are a presence in Shadowspire, and they are not to be
taken lightly."
"Yeah, whatever," Havoc muttered to himself. He leaned forward and began sorting
the papers into some sort of order. A thin, keening whine filled the room as a neon
green light encapsulated The Arcane Kid. The sound and light quickly disappeared,
taking Arcane with them.
     "Good riddance," said Havoc.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings to all the duel fans in Shadowspire! It is good to be back with you
once again. I've enjoyed the time off going to and fro throughout the land of
Alastari. We have an interesting collection of people in this great place, but I much
prefer it here in Shadowspire. Traveling is good for the soul, or so they say. I
cannot say that I am any more enlightened than when I left. Maybe Huard is correct
and I am just an old dog that isn't interested in any new tricks.
We have a new Duelmaster! Dragon Scarred's reign was a short one as he faced the
departing Lord Protector Krow in this turn's title match. Krow overpowered DS in a 2
minute fight, and it wasn't even close. But, since Krow was on his way out of the
arena, we had to crown a new champion. Jet-Boot Jack jumped at an opportunity to go
after Blythe once again and this became our title match. Jet-Boot appears to still be
harboring a grudge against Blythe for killing his teammate several turns back. Jet-
Boot Jack ends up with the most recognition points and is our new Duelmaster.
Congrats to Jet-Boot, who is managed by Hombre.
The most avoided team for the turn is The Monsantis, an absentee team. Avoiding
them the most, we have Wicked Martyrs. Blythe was the most challenged warrior for the
turn. We've already alluded to the 19 point down challenge he received from our
newest Duelmaster and the probable cause for that challenge. The other fight of
interest was from another exiting Lord Protector. LP Strabo went down in a feud
against Orlando. To everyone's surprise, Orlando bested Strabo. I'm guessing there
is a lesson here about NOT changing what is working, no matter what the Gladiatorial
Commission tells you.
In the death section of the newspaper, we have a few deaths and some acts of
vengeance to discuss. Blackhart sent Blind Lookout to the Dark Arena, and the we all
go to see an idiom in action. How does the saying go? Even a blind squirrel finds a
nut on occasion. Blind Lookout found a good vein or two on his opponent, Mountain
Troll, and struck true! The other death came to the Bloodhammer Clan. Fledrat
challenged down by a point to face Quick of Big Lake Solution. As you have already
surmised, someone died in this match. It was Fledrat. Big Lake Solution has an active
feud going with Bloodhammer Clan, now it looks as if Bloodhammer Clan can return that
animosity and keep the cycle alive!
The Commodores commandeer the top team spot from Darque Ages, who fell to 4th
place. Shanghaied moves up 1 spot to 2nd, while Otto's Diner jumps 6 places to 5th.
Cult of Bacchus holds on at 3rd. There was a lot of movement in the ranks this turn.
The biggest gain belongs to From the Left who shot up an astounding 9 places to 6th.
The biggest drop would go to The Monsantis if they were active, also with a 9 spot
shift. But, since they aren't here, we will give that infamous distinction to Vlad's
crew over at Pray the Gods, who fell from 5th to 12th.
That is all that I have for you this cycle. I hope to see each of you back in
Shadowspire for turn 275. It is a semi-milestone, I think. Anyway, come back and see
if Jet-Boot Jack can defend his title. We have a few warriors that are nearing
graduation as well, so that is always fun to watch and speculate. The SYP, under the
guidance of the Commission, will be here to report on all the arena happenings! Won't
you come and join us?

Hydra -- Say 'hi' to Ahringol for me! -- Malakai

Slaycia -- Inconceivable!! -- Psycho Styx

Subpar Sue -- My mother told me there would be days like these... When I would walk
out onto the sands only to be matched up against some mutant who's seemingly
impenetrable wall of flesh is encased in so much armor that the progeny of armadillos
must swoon whenever this freak waddles by. -- Choke

Zurray -- You're not quite what I was expecting, but I'll take it. -- Orin Scrivello

Psycho Styx -- Are you sure you still have it where it counts? Don't they revoke your
man card when you DC the same warrior repeatedly and can't pull off the victory? --

For the records: Krow = WS 10(1)-10-16-13-17-4-15 (+5 Attack) MO/LO MS Parry Learner.
That 13 WT hurt him in a few fights where he didn't learn well or at all, but he is my
first +5 Att WS and MS favorite (not as excited about that). -- DeGotti

Strabo -- Why did I have to break your weapon? -- Krow

Vlad -- I use a different name for you, but the Commission won't let me use it
publicly. But, that name defines you, and your smell. Well, I guess the one thing I
didn't quit, is my integrity. I fully understand you have no recollection of anything
to do with integrity, as that left you when you tossed the first sock under your bed.
But hey little fella, if you are going to quit something, I am glad you picked
something nobody expected you to have anyway. As a side note, here are some facts for
you to ponder, as you sit and ponder things like why the sheep don't run from you. In
my last ten turns with the Outcasts, my warriors were involved in 36 challenges, 17 of
them I initiated and 19 I received. Of the 17 I initiated 10 were up-challenges and 7
were down-challenges. Of the 19 I received, 11 were down-challenges, and 8 were up-
challenges. So, who is the down-challenging scum again? In fact, over 90% of the
time, the point differential on my turn-by-turn challenges is in the positive, meaning
that I challenge up to a higher point than down. I doubt a little fella like you can
boost the same. So, little man, I guess the pot has met the kettle and probably does
not like the reflection. When you said that tissue came in handy, was that a play on
words? I'm guessing so. -- Den

Grenhelm -- First of four coming your way. -- Quick

DeGotti -- I feel like I should say something mean to you, but after what your barber
did to you, I don't have the heart. -- Den

Womanta -- Well princess, it looks like Shadowthrone will be taking you apart, little
piece by little piece. -- Den

Wyrm Crusher -- A wyrm I am not, til we meet again. -- Pavil

Mad Nurse -- At least you stayed out of the infirmary. -- Whing

Orin Scrivello -- Somehow you get first swing with a weapon you are not suited for and
then plunder me for knowledge!!! -- Zurray

Mighty Mixon -- Arggghh, I knew my win streak wouldn't last. -- Tarlee

Congrats to recent Invitees Zayla, Krow and Strabo. -- Visionist and Clan Longbeard

Krow -- You were my second challenge, but it looks as if it worked out well for both
of us. Congrats on immortality! -- Strabo

All -- For anyone interested in such things: STRABO 11(1)-10(1)-7-13-21-13-11 PL,
Ambi and +11 overall. He got great faves, too: HI/HI, SC, Lunge tactic, Defense
learn. He will be going to 107, but it will be a few months before I can activate
him. He was a fun warrior and I had some memorable battles with Vlad's PLs throughout
their various careers. Overall, he is my 2nd most bonused warrior to graduate, the
first being a +12 PR. -- Master Darque

Blythe -- Easy challenge, but with all these Lungers around, I didn't have much of a
choice. -- Clara D'Anduza

Benjamin -- I know there is some saying about going to the same well too many times,
but I was fully expecting to be feuded last turn. -- Moduin

Ghost of Winedrak -- Sorry about that. As you can see, victories are not my strong
suit. I guess I got a little overzealous! -- Ferdowsi
