As the Spire Turns
The Gladiatorial Commission of Shadowspire has learned, over many years, that there
are three things a guild manager could be counted on to do. One, complain; two,
complain loudly; and three, when given the opportunity, complain loudly while
insisting they are not complaining.
Valerius Flamma of the Roman Republic guild is particularly adept in all three
disciplines. He arrived at the Commission's offices shortly after sunrise, wearing his
finest Roman robes, carrying six scrolls and the expression of a man who had
personally been betrayed by the gods.
Visionist of the Mid Earth guild was already there, sitting comfortably in a chair.
This, Valerius decided, was further evidence of wrong doing. "Visionist!" Valerius
thundered.
Visionist looked up, "Valerius."
"You know what you've done."
Visionist considered this, "I manage a gladiator guild. I've done quite a lot."
Valerius slapped a scroll onto the Commission scribe's desk, "You have abused the
challenge system!"
The scribe sighed, "Which part?"
"The entire part!"
The scribe glanced at the scroll, "Ah."
He looked toward Visionist, "Did you down challenge one of Roman Republic's warriors?"
Visionist nodded, "Yes, I did."
"To bloodfeud?"
"Yes.
"Against the warrior who killed one of yours?"
"Yes."
The scribe nodded slowly, "So... revenge."
"Strategic revenge," Visionist corrected.
Valerius head nearly exploded, "Strategic!?!". He began pacing, "You have taken your
highest-ranked warrior and deliberately sent him down the rankings to challenge my 2-
fight warrior who killed one of your own! That is not strategy! That is..."
He searched for the appropriate word, "Mean spirited. Unfair. Dishonorable!"
Visionist raised an eyebrow.
"You killed one of my warriors."
"That's gladiatorial combat!"
"You killed him and I didn't complain."
"That's what gladiators do!"
"You killed him and then complained when I sent someone to avenge the kill."
"I did not complain!"
The scribe pointed at the scrolls, "You arrived with documentation."
Valerius ignored him, "The rankings exist for a reason!"
Visionist nodded, "They do."
"They are meant to determine appropriate opponents!"
"Exactly."
"Then why is your highest ranked warrior fighting one of my lower ranked warriors?"
Visionist smiled, "Because your lower ranked warrior killed one of mine."
There was silence.
The scribe rubbed his temples.
Valerius pointed dramatically at Visionist.
"That is precisely the sort of circular logic that destroys civilization!"
"You Romans invented civilization."
"We invented roads."
"Also aqueducts."
"Those are roads for water."
The scribe closed his eyes, "I should have stayed in bed."
Valerius continued, "And what happens if every guild starts doing this?"
Visionist shrugged, "Bloodfeuds?"
"Exactly!"
"That's generally how bloodfeuds work."
"No!" Valerius screamed, "Soon we'll have chaos! Every time a warrior kills another
warrior, his guild will send its strongest fighter down the rankings to retaliate!"
Visionist looked thoughtful, "That sounds like an excellent way to quickly settle
grudges. Another side affect is that the newbie hopefully gets a training boost. Or
would you rather they challenge your killer all four rounds trying to take his or her
head off, over and over?"
Valerius stared at him refusing to answer, "You are enjoying this."
Visionist grinned. "Immensely."
The scribe picked up the arena challenge records, "Let me understand the sequence." He
looked at Valerius, "Your new warrior killed one of Mid Earth's new warriors."
"Yes."
"Then Mid Earth's highest-ranked warrior issued a down challenge to your warrior."
"Yes."
"For a bloodfeud."
"YES!"
The scribe turned toward Visionist, "And you admit this?"
"Absolutely."
"Why?"
Visionist leaned back, "Because Valerius's warrior killed mine."
The scribe nodded, "Fair enough."
Valerius slammed both hands onto the desk, "IT IS NOT FAIR ENOUGH!"
Behind them the door opened and a junior clerk poked her head inside, "Sir? There is
another guild manager outside asking if down challenges are legal."
The Scribe stared at her before answering, "Tell him yes."
The clerk hesitated, "Even for bloodfeuds?"
"Especially for bloodfeuds."
"Should I tell him there are restrictions?"
The commission scribe looked at Valerius, then Visionist, then the scrolls, "No."
The clerk disappeared back through the door.
Valerius shook his head in disbelief, "This is madness."
Visionist stood and smiled, "No, Valerius, this is arena politics and that has always
been messy."
Valerius pointed a trembling finger at him, "You haven't heard the last of this!"
Visionist sighed and rolls his eyes, "It has been over three months, have you learned
nothing? Let me make it simple for you. In the future, if you happen to kill one of my
warriors, you know what is to come from me. If I happen to kill one of your warriors
it is YOUR choice on how you bloodfeud. I don't get a say, just like you don't get a
say on how I bloodfeud."
Valerius gathered his documents and stormed past the scribes desk and out the door,
whose face was buried in his hands. In the outer office, Valerius walked past the
clerk, who was adding another complaint form to the stack. The Commission office had
been open for less than two hours. It was going to be a very long day.
SPY REPORT
There's a peculiar smell drifting through Shadowspire this afternoon, and for once, it
isn't coming from the sewers. It's Moldylox! The Cult of Bacchus warrior defended the
throne against Beast Within in a two-minute affair, and now sits atop the city with
129 recognition points. Meanwhile, Frank O'Connor spent seven minutes savagely
explaining to Ptyalism why challenging a literary fellow can be hazardous to one's
health. Having administered his final lesson, Frank collected his invitation to the
Advanced Games and departed Shadowspire. Congratulations to the Literate Loons on his
graduation! I imagine they'll miss him terribly, though the rest of us might
appreciate a little less poetry and a little more drinking.
Speaking of drinking, the Cult of Bacchus has apparently decided to consume the entire
tavern rather than merely its contents. A perfect 5-0 turn, 76 recognition points
gained, and the top team honors wrested away from Clan Longbeard! Moldylox took the
throne, Thunderfist battered Caius Flacus, Shadowbrooke demolished Jach Skellington,
Moonfury overpowered Stormgirl, and Hylda somehow convinced the arena gods to favor
her over Rahksahnah. Not to be outdone, Of Wolf and Man also posted a flawless 5-0
turn, gaining 41 points. The wolves are howling, the Bacchus faithful are celebrating,
and somewhere a tavern keeper is calculating how much he can charge for watered-down
ale.
Now, about those challenges and avoids. The Cult of Bacchus was the most avoided team
this turn, with Warbow leading the effort to keep its distance. An interesting
strategy, considering Knifefist of Warbow returned to the sands and promptly flattened
Rage in a one-minute mismatch, gaining 25 recognition points in the process.
Apparently, Warbow can find its courage when the opponent isn't carrying a wine jug.
Frank O'Connor was the most challenged warrior, though Ptyalism was the unfortunate
fellow who actually got through to him. Hunter deserves a raised glass for challenging
24 points upward against Chakor. He lost, naturally, but a fellow willing to climb
that particular mountain deserves credit for trying. The next round is on him. I have
expenses, you understand.
Death paid another visit to Shadowspire, and the miserable bastard didn't even buy a
drink. War Droid of Arduin slaughtered August Wilson of the Literate Loons in a two-
minute bout, leaving the literary stable to mourn one of its own while celebrating
Frank's graduation. A cruel bit of bookkeeping, that. Meanwhile, Clan Longbeard
settled an outstanding debt when Gilmur defeated Cin Quarterhalf in a four-minute
bloodfeud, avenging Rudonn's death from the previous turn. Justice, revenge, or simply
a dwarf with a very long memory?
The Dragonbane Guild welcomed Black Sparrow with a victory over Saulle, while the
Darque Ages introduced Canossa and Charlemagne, both victorious in their debuts. The
crowd, meanwhile, awarded its favor to Brute Squad 1 after a brutal three-minute
victory over Ptomaine. A proper fight, that one! Contrast it with Charmin and Giotto,
who subjected the spectators to twenty-two minutes of what the official report
generously describes as a dull competition. Twenty-two minutes! I've seen glaciers
move with greater urgency. Charmin eventually won, but both combatants landed among
the least popular warriors of the turn. I tried counting the individual blows, lost
interest, finished my flask, borrowed another flask, and still had time to contemplate
the futility of existence before someone finally bothered to win.
And so another turn passes in our charming little city of violence. Until next turn,
keep your challenges sensible and your wine somewhere I can find it. If you happen to
see Charmin and Giotto preparing for another match, kindly warn me in advance. I'll
need a larger flask.
