         + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

The mild-mannered reporter shook his head in rueful admiration. "A dark and
stormy night, a dark and stormy woman. It's enough to make a person believe in
omens."
Lady Protector Sandy scowled at him. "What other woman are you seeing?"
"Nobody but you. I wouldn't dare!" He adjusted his glasses and tried for an
innocent, earnest look. He was good at that; it was his disguise.
The earnest look didn't seem to be working this time, because she kept on
scowling. "I'm blonde."
"But stormy, and you have a dark aura." Being a reporter, he was good with
words. "Dark and dangerous. Tremendously exciting, of course."
The look she gave him was full of doubts, and the promise of dark and dangerous
reprisals if her doubts were justified. "What about this other phone booth? The one
you said Hayden was using instead of the one in our alley? Where is it?"
     "Er...."
"Don't give me your stupid superhero's code!" Sandy leaned across the small
table (cafes never had large tables) and grabbed the mild-mannered reporter by the
front of his starched white shirt. Two buttons popped off, and the reporter's
turquoise tee-shirt was revealed through the gap. "Don't mess with me," she growled.
"NOBODY messes with me and gets away with it. I've slugged managers for less than
you're doing. A mere gladiator is nothing to me."
     "I'm not a gladiator! I'm a reporter--"
Her grip on his shirt tightened as she twisted the fabric around her fist,
choking him to silence. "Don't MESS with me. I know a gladiator when I see one."
Her smile was not friendly. "Besides, Arenamistress Sylia of Andor told me ALL about
you."
The mild-mannered young reporter blushed. "That was, uh, my evil twin brother!"
To his surprise and relief, she laughed. "Then have your evil twin brother show
me this other phone booth. Right NOW."

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! HOMICIDAL MANIACS had cause to celebrate,
after NUMBER TWO got 17 points by beating SWALLOWTAIL. A certain someone should cut
down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 14 points to NUMBER TWO.
(Discrete enough, SWALLOWTAIL?) THINREDONE successfully staved off a grab for the
roses by CAPTAIN ELOY of MORDANT. Does MORDANT have no one talented enough to
dethrone it? Word has it one team in MORDANT is using psychics to predict wins.
They lead a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas?
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... You've heard about
OUTLAW INLAW of HOMICIDAL MANIACS. Death plays no favorites, and neither do I. What
was a 8-20-0 doing on the fields in the first place? A moment of silence for OUTLAW
INLAW, who died an untimely death at the hands of JEJUNE. In the spirit of revenge,
we call upon HOMICIDAL MANIACS to act! Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match
itself must needs be wasting!
Leave me now, you base fools! My fingers tire and I fear my incessant prattling
may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. Can anything compare to the
pleasure of writing Spyreports for MORDANT? On that giddy note I take my leave--
Novgorodny Vir

Grunesh the Orc -- You may be pleased to know, *I* am certainly pleased, that the
Brick Wall has nothing to say to you. -- Number Two

Black Devin -- I feel kind of sympathetic toward you standbys, you know? Because
you're all basically "number twos" who never have a hope of reaching number one. Of
course, neither do I, that's why I feel sympathetic. For a guy who didn't have a
hope of winning in the long run, I thought you did just fine. -- Number Two
P.S. Is it true what they say about standbys getting free resurrection if they
happen to die?

Destiny -- It is always good when a young person such as yourself pays attention to
the advice of her elders and betters, of which I am one. However, it is proper for
the young person to repay her elder in some appropriate fashion. Anyone taking the
time to learn six skills should NOT have time to win. -- Haydan
P.S. Just so you know.

Grunesh the Orc -- Ha! Battered yourself senseless against the dumb old Wall first,
didn't you? That works for me. -- Outlaw Inlaw

Black Devin -- (sulking) Don't *I* get a win? Everybody ELSE got wins against
standbys. Why don't *I* get one? -- Third Charmer

Out of eight fights, only ONE involved two managed warriors (I use the term loosely
where mine are concerned)? Sad. Not a good sign, either. -- Nick

Gooeyduck -- (cleaning his hands in the sand) That was disgusting. YOU are
disgusting. A true Duck would be bad enough, but you--! A half-melted marshmallow
golem in the general shape of a duck, guaranteed to stick to weapons and armor....
You're an offense to gladiators everywhere. -- Chark Forkbeard

Jejune -- There are too many golems in the arena these days. I believe it's a plot
by the wizards to take over Mordant, but insidiously. I shall have to take steps. --
M. Brunaro Chardinee

Thinredone -- I hold by my comment to Jejune. This is intolerable. -- M. Brunaro
Chardinee

Outlaw Inlaw -- Were I not constrained by the geas put on me when I entered the
arena, which prevents me giving my best efforts on the sands, I would have demolished
you with great pleasure. -- Black Devin

Brick Wall -- You don't understand. There are, uh, two different architects, in
competition for, um, the building of the Great Wall. I would never question the
decisions of MY architect or the actions of his minion masons, but his opponent, the,
um, Dark Architect, as you might say, sent HIS minion masons to, well, sort of steal
me and a few other bricks away from the TRUE project. So I am out of my proper
place, through no error of my own. I just need to return to MY place in the Great
Wall. -- Metris Fro, Caeran Citizen

Number Two -- Do you have to pass on my reply, or can he, er, it, the Brick Wall, can
he receive it directly? -- Metris Fro

                                FACE-TO-FACE XXXIV

Our next Winter Face-to-Face will be held on Martin Luther King weekend, Friday
through Sunday, 14-16 January 2005, at the Embassy Suites in Tempe, Arizona (4400 S
Rural Rd--this is the same hotel as last year). Room rates are $139.00 per night,
1-4 occupancy, which includes breakfast. The rooms are blocked. The reservations
number is 480-897-7444; tell them you're with the "Reality Simulations Face to Face
Convention" block. Our room block will be released in mid-December, so please make
sure you reserve your room before then!
Room rates include a full cooked-to-order breakfast and a complimentary two-hour
manager's reception. There is a free shuttle to the airport, as well as free parking.
The hotel is located down the freeway in Tempe. All rooms have high speed internet
(for an extra charge). There is a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool, and of course a
bar and Mexican restaurant inside the hotel. And there's Denny's right across the
street. Look for transportation info in the tournament information sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. Don't miss this one, it'll be a blast! See you there!
