How fast could a Brick Wall move? When the Random Maniac tried to leave the
guildhouse, there it was, looming in the alley at the bottom of the steps. That the
Homicidal Maniacs' "guildhouse" was a second story at the back of a warehouse up from
an alley in the worst part of the city had seemed ideal when Random first joined the
team. Now, one stupid little heap of walking bricks could block his exit. He hated
that. It was probably damaging his psyche, and the gods knew his psyche was in bad
shape to begin with, at least, that's what everyone told him.
And when he managed to get out the front of the building, by bribing the night
watchman of the warehouse, which he couldn't afford to do often, there the damned
Brick Wall was again! When it couldn't block his departure, the damned thing
FOLLOWED him.
It was intolerable!
It was persecution!
Come to that, why did this stupid Wall care what he did, and how had it found
out in the first place? There had been no Homicidal Maniac graduate in years...
since the Brick Wall, in fact--to carry word to the Isle. It was a puzzle. He hated
puzzles. They made his head ache.
The Random Maniac paused at the corner where a dark street met a darker alley.
Listened to the night. Silence. Scrabbling rats' feet. Squeak of a rat as a cat
pounced. More silence. Maybe he had gotten awa--
The grating of brick on brick.

Farther down the street, at the next dark alley after the one the Random Maniac
had been headed for, a man clad all in black lurked in a shadow and smiled coldly.
It was amazing how easy it was to manipulate a Brick Wall. Of course, it was stupid,
that was one of the basic characteristics of walls. Attempts to deflect the Maniac--
another idiot--by driving him to berserk fury with overdoses of Dark Root had failed.
Probably the fool couldn't even tell he'd been drugged, and instead of getting him
killed in the arena, the Root had improved his fighting. Not what anyone wanted to
see. Especially not the bookies who had taken bets against him.
But for now, it appeared that this new tactic was working.
The Black Lurker waggled a finger into the night, and a dirty child crept out of
the alley and cringed before him. "Wot's yer orders, Mahster Figgin?" it whined.

Notes from the arena champ.
I am quite happy to sit on this throne again. Assur's plan worked and while my
teammate is less than pleased, it really was a good idea. The only problem is the
precedent it sets and it looks like there may be even more grumblings within our
stable coming forward.
My way is much simpler and much easier. Be satisfied with whatever life throws
you. Have joy regardless of your circumstances and the daily struggles and trials
you face will be as nothing. Of course, it helps if there is an underlying source
for that joy.

SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of MORDANT. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to
give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. The boys at KIDS
GONE BAD left the arena dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by HOMICIDAL
MANIACS. Good show! Say what you will about blind luck and dirty fighting, but
BOOZE will tell you 70-82-11 is nothing to laugh at... BOOZE had cause to celebrate,
after CAMPARI got 18 points by beating GESHI SCRIVENER. HONESTY certainly had a
baffled expression on his face, after losing to CHINA BULL and losing 12 points in
the process! TIEN-SHU OF GENRAI found out that MORDANT isn't a democracy. You've
gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! So who's the team that's been walking into
taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like a horde of jackals fleeing from the lion, so
did the "warriors" in MORDANT avoid HOMICIDAL MANIACS. Like a pup with its tail
between its legs, BOOZE scurried away from HOMICIDAL MANIACS. Oh, the shame! If
challenges were horses, CHINA BULL could open up a fast food joint!
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have
fallen into an unconscious stupor.
Leave me now, you base fools! As if buffeted by forces of nature beyond my
control, I must take my leave of this place. Can anything compare to the pleasure of
