"Okay, this won't do." Lubaya put the newsletter down and glared at her
teammates. "PERSONALS, not just the spy report and the warrior listings, actual
personal ads on the front page of the newsletter! ONE sheet of paper! This will NOT
do."
"How will you stop it?" Abalonea didn't look up from the breastplate she was
polishing. "If there's no regional news, and if there are no more teams than we've
got, how are WE going to do a damned thing about it? It isn't like we could hire
more warriors for The Golden Fish to lengthen the warrior listings. And unless you
manage to take the Duel2Dude's spot away from Toofless and write a column--because
you know HE won't--what can we do?"
Lubaya looked grim, and her next words explained why all too clearly. "We can
have an adventure and chronicle it for the newsletter."
That got Abalonea's attention. And Analira's--she was mending a pair of
stockings--and Nellistha's--she was reading something written in a script none of the
others recognized. Yellow Pike was out somewhere; he hadn't said where he was going.
Probably just as well.
"Adventures are DANGEROUS," Abalonea said. "You could get hurt--"
"And not in the arena?" Analira asked.
"Not the same," Nellistha said. "In the arena, you have a chance to hurt back."
She frowned. "On adventures, you have to sleep outside, and eat badly cooked food.
You run the risk of being arrested, or captured and sold into slavery, or..." she
colored and looked away, "other things."
"Doesn't matter," Lubaya said. "It's got to be done."
The others looked at her in gloomy silence. Lubaya was...forceful. If she said
they had to go on an adventure, then they would go.
Nellistha rolled up her scroll and tied it, then set it on the table between
them with careful attention to the precision of its placement. After another moment
spent arranging the ribbon's ends, she sighed and looked up. "Do you have something
specific in mind?"
"I was hoping one of you would have an idea."
The others exchanged glances and shook their heads. "Not a clue," Abalonea
said.
There were steps on the porch and rattle of the flap as the day's mail was
pushed through the slot. Everyone moved away from the table a little bit, relaxing
as they turned to other topics.
Analira picked up the envelopes and flipped through them quickly. "Note from
our management--"
"As if! Management, ha!" Nellistha said.
"Another mash note for you, Nell, I recognize Krag's handwriting--"
Nellistha blushed and groaned and snatched the envelope out of her teammate's
hand.
"And somebody's sending you perfumed billy-doos, Lu--"
Lubaya took the thick envelope and turned it over in her hands, examining the
mauve seal curiously. "I wasn't expecting anything," she said.
"Well, open it and read it to us!"
"Are you going to read your note from Geroge Krag out loud?"
     Nellistha's blush deepened. "No!"
Lubaya smiled and left the room, the unopened envelope in her hand. "Maybe it's
an adventure," she said over her shoulder.

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
NIANIA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see PIP win a fight and gain 18 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, ANALIRA
beat PROWESS and PROWESS lost 6 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is
the spice of life, NIANIA may be getting bland, as TOOFLESS stays top dog in the
city. Jim's Tap Room, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they
get this stuff? From NIANIA's trash dumps?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave
team is developing these kinds of weapons?
What does the NIANIA arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that
before I leave the fine city of NIANIA. I feel much better now. Glad to see the
back of this place-- Snide Clemens

Toofless -- You could write a column, you lout! I work HARD to give you a good
match, one you can talk about, and do you talk? Not much! You should be called
Tongueless. -- Lubaya
P.S. Apparently it's true what they say about neutered cats being quieter.

Prowess -- I always look up to you. -- Analira
P.S. Of course, you ARE more than a foot taller than I am....

Formidable -- Yep, once again you prove your name. I wish you were a woman. I'd
like to meet up with a formidable woman. Of course, there's the Female Prow,
definitely on the formidable side, but still...another one wouldn't hurt, would it?
-- Yellow Pike
P.S. Actually, losing to you is kind of embarrassing, given our difference in
visible fights.
P.P.S. Nick and my teammates just say, "Try harder, then," which isn't helpful!

I really wasn't ready to fight the Khalhums Dwarf. I never do well against him. --
Abalonea
P.S. And he doesn't teach me USEFUL things. Why would I need to know how to "timber
a mine shaft"? The only way you'll get me into a mine shaft is tied up and
screaming. (shudder) Under the ground? Under a whole MOUNTAIN? No way!

Gods, he's really after me! Every time I turn AROUND, there's the Kung-Fu Master!
Okay, I admit that Orcs are, well, they're hunks, let's face it. That manly form,
that intent and lustful eye, those tusks, that aura of testosterone oozing out of
every pore.... (sigh) Maybe I should just give in to him? -- Nellistha

Buddy Lee, Love -- Gosh, I am so SORRY about that typo last time! I have beaten the
typist soundly around the head and shoulders, and smote him hip and thigh as well. I
SINCERELY hope it won't happen again. -- Analira

Scardy Cat -- Beware the fury of the Beggars' Guild! -- Ressero, one of the most
Persistent Beggars

Nellistha -- You see, woman? You are helpless in my presence. You want me to come
and teach you the secrets of inter-gender unarmed combat. I can tell. -- Geroge
Krag, Master of Kung-Fu

Abalonea -- You're too tall for me, woman, but still, I can recognize a fine figure
of a woman when I see one. And there's always the possibility of trimming you down a
little shorter, eh? Not that I'd want to take a Shew home to meet my mum. She'd
have a fit, and she swings a mean pickaxe when she's having her a fit, mum does. --
Gobiann Strongaxe, Dwarf of Khalhums

"Cat's Up"? That's ridiculous. Practically insulting. -- Dark Champion

                                FACE-TO-FACE XXXIV

Our next Winter Face-to-Face will be held on Martin Luther King weekend, Friday
through Sunday, 14-16 January 2005, at the Embassy Suites in Tempe, Arizona (4400 S
Rural Rd--this is the same hotel as last year). Room rates are $139.00 per night,
1-4 occupancy, which includes breakfast. The rooms are blocked. The reservations
number is 480-897-7444; tell them you're with the "Reality Simulations Face to Face
Convention" block. Our room block will be released in mid-December, so please make
sure you reserve your room before then!
Room rates include a full cooked-to-order breakfast and a complimentary two-hour
manager's reception. There is a free shuttle to the airport, as well as free parking.
The hotel is located down the freeway in Tempe. All rooms have high speed internet
(for an extra charge). There is a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool, and of course a
bar and Mexican restaurant inside the hotel. And there's Denny's right across the
street. Look for transportation info in the tournament information sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. Don't miss this one, it'll be a blast! See you there!
