It wasn't that she objected to rescuing Abalonea. She liked her teammate, and if Abalonea needed rescuing, she was willing--especially now that she herself was a Lady Protector and didn't have to worry about the long-term effects of dying. But it just didn't feel like they were doing it right. The Shuttle rounded a corner, the heavy coach swaying, then slammed to a stop, skidding sideways on the narrow road. Analira was in a position to look out and down, way down from the side of the road into the canyon below. It hadn't seemed that deep or steep a minute ago, even though they were in the mountains now, but.... "Stand and deliver! Your money or your lives!" Ah! Highway robbers! THIS was more like it! Analira brightened and looked around at her fellow passengers, all gladiators. All probably Lord Protectors headed for the Isle, and therefore immortal. They didn't seem excited. Or even interested, really. And Lubaya was frowning and muttering about their schedule. Their SCHEDULE! The woman had no adventure in her soul, that's what it was. Orcs didn't, dammit. How had she ever agreed to go on an adventure with an Orc? She should have realized, the first time Lubaya mentioned taking the Shuttle, that this just wouldn't work. Lubaya didn't know HOW to have an adventure. Well, she would just have to-- A round bearded face with a fleshy nose appeared at one of the windows. "Out you get, ladies and gentlemen! We'll have this coach emptied fourth with, and even third if possible." Analira stared for a moment. The nose, the beard, the mountains.... "We're being robbed by DWARVES?" A pair of eyebrows like hairy caterpillars met over the nose. "Ye got some problem with that? Ye think we can't do it RIGHT, maybe, just because we're a little shorter than you are? Out you get, missy, this minute!" Sighing, Analira climbed over the legs of her uninterested fellow passengers and stepped down onto the road. Which was muddy and blocked with a substantial log barricade manned by a dozen Dwarves. Or at least, a dozen Dwarven helmets, that being all that was visible above the piled logs. The one in front of her put hands on hips and looked up at her. "Do ye think your length of leg will defend ye against a crossbow, missy?" "No, but...." Looking at that scowling face (what she could see above a magnificent beard, she decided not to complete that thought. "So, we're stopped. What can we do for you?" "Got any gold?" "Money? Not much--the Commission is paying our fare." She pulled a handful of coins out of her belt pouch. Silver and copper, she never carried gold. Didn't have it, most of the time. "Piffling!" The Dwarf peered at the coins and snorted. "Nianian coin is so debased, even if you HAD gold, it'd be worthless. What about jewelry? Sometimes get a better grade of gold in that." Analira laughed and touched the scar on her face. People told her it didn't look bad, and of course, for a gladiator, it didn't. But still.... "I don't have any jewelry, gold or otherwise." "Don't see why not. A woman should have jewelry, it's...insurance." The Dwarf frowned so deeply his eyes crossed. "We'll have to do something about this." He turned and shouted to his companions behind the barricade. Since it was in Dwarvish, Analira had no idea what he was saying. But something she'd taken for a rock on the hillside unfolded thick legs and kicked at the logs. The barricade slid over the cliff into the canyon below. Dwarves stepped back from the road and waved the Shuttle forward. The driver cracked his whip. "Hey, what about me?" Analira asked. "Ye'll have to come with us," the Dwarf said. "Think of it as an adventure." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 509): GOOEYDUCK of LAB EXPERIMENTS (The Mun, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Solitare, that was a splendidly timed loss on your part. To think that I should be the Duel2Dudette! Now, indeed, I can leave this place with a light heart, for I have achieved the pinnacle of success in this arena. And I can be immortal on my adventure, which is also a heart-lifter. Analira P.S. I stand before you a triple-15. 11-6 (with MY style!) 10-15-15-10-15, GA (ugh!) mod/low. Masters in attack (favorite learn) and initiative, advanced expert in parry. I am charismatic and attractive, but not terribly cool. P.P.S. And Lubaya is 11-7-11-11-17-10-17, SS, low/very low. Odd, but then she IS odd. Courageous, egotistical, and...not trustworthy? Oops! SPY REPORT Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day, I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! Practice pays for PIP, who pummelled ABALONEA, to pocket 12 points. Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by KHALHUMS DWARF, of NIANIA, who despite a 0-0-0 couldn't overcome NIANIA's Number 1. So who was the warrior seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem... A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of GLORY BOUND TROLLS, alone and unchallenged. Like a pup with its tail between its legs, KNOT WHOLE scurried away from GLORY BOUND TROLLS. Oh, the shame! Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and YELLOW PIKE is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't THE GOLDEN FISH proud! Do my ears deceive me? FORMIDABLE (outclassed by 29 points) challenged LUBAYA, in what promises to be a fight.(!) Fixed fights? Paybacks? Blind luck? Whatever, FORMIDABLE challenged LUBAYA, FORMIDABLE the underdog by 29 points. My love of complete Spyreports dictates that I note the mismatched fight, PROWESS and YELLOW PIKE. Are KNOT WHOLE unwilling to engage in a fair fight? I thought PROWESS showed great skill and promise when she was defeated by YELLOW PIKE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors. Death (in the form of DANGEROUS CRIMINAL of NIANIA) knocked on UPUP's door. What will GLORY BOUND TROLLS do? The suspense is killing me. Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting! Leave me now, you base fools! As if buffeted by forces of nature beyond my control, I must take my leave of this place. Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME YELLOW PIKE 5031 14 50 1 106 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PIP 5286 10 3 0 102 GLORY BOUND TROLLS (599) FORMIDABLE 5177 12 6 3 97 KNOT WHOLE (443) PROWESS 5155 14 18 0 93 KNOT WHOLE (443) -SOLITARE 5120 10 11 0 93 HARLEQUINS (577) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ABALONEA 5032 14 50 0 92 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME NELLISTHA 5156 21 18 1 85 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME OOZE-O 5277 10 3 0 59 GLORY BOUND TROLLS (599) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME NEEBLES 5301 6 3 0 45 GLORY BOUND TROLLS (599) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -COMEDY 5139 8 8 1 33 HARLEQUINS (577) -MELODY 5151 4 4 0 32 HARLEQUINS (577) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -OSCAR 5264 2 0 0 22 HARLEQUINS (577) -BWA HA 3650 2 5 0 17 KNOT WHOLE (443) -JESTER 5309 1 0 0 15 HARLEQUINS (577) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. Either send me a diplo (address it to The Saint) or send your updates to me directly at Sue at solberg-mathews.com. As you may guess, replace the at with @ and you're good to go (I do hate spammy mail and this will end up on the web). I have information on the following alliances: ADIO, Allied Axis, Armada, Brotherhood of Justice, Brotherhood of the Blade, Cadre, CDC, Chaos, Inc., Circle of Order, Company of Brothers, Consortium, Council of Lords, Couple Good Guys, Crimson Vengeance, DOA, DOOMcorps, Enigmafia, Eurosquad, Fascist Federation, FONZ, Frothingslosh Syndicate, GAPPDA, Homeland Alliance, IT Alliance, Jingoists, kLk, Knights of the Covenant, LBA, League Arcane, Legion6, Living Essences, Lords and Ladies of Darkness, Manic Union, Midnight Foundation, Minions of Diana, Monarchs of Montezuma, NCA, NIMROD, R.A.G.E., Seventh Sons, The Firm, The French Connection, Vendett@ United, and the Vendetta Cartel. If you are a member of one of these alliances, let me know. If you are a member of some other alliance that isn't listed, let me know. If you were at any point in your past a part of one of these alliance but are now independent, also let me know. Going inactive doesn't mean you get removed from this list; people are assumed to still be in the same alliance when they return. Even having everyone in an alliance go inactive doesn't change anything. If an alliance is officially disbanding, that's another thing you have to let me know.... The Saint, keeper of lists P.S. If you already responded to my online plea (and I replied), you can ignore this. 17 November 2004 Hammer 500-Hammer Run for the Roll Ups Hosted by Hammer Niytyole Island DM 33 has dwindled to the point where as of T-482 [duedate November 3, 2004] there were only 2 active stables listed with 3 inactive stables in a once thriving and lively regular arena. During the past 40+ cycles Hammer has been hosting the Hammer Run for the Roll Ups in DM 33. Thus far only the Ripper and Slasher categories have produced winners to claim the 5 New Team Roll Ups Prize for being the first declared Style Master of their respective categories to graduate. Every contending stable has gone inactive for one reason or another, including CASINO HAMMERZ, over the past several months. Now DM 33 faces the harsh reality that if RSI chooses to close any arenas due to little or no interest, Niytyole Island could very well head the list of endangered regular arenas! In an effort to preserve his beloved island, Hammer is announcing the continuation of the Hammer Run for the Roll Ups; combined with the Hammer 500 which will conclude both contests on T-500 [duedate July 13, 2005] should DM 33 continue to remain open in the coming months. Attention Hammer Runners! The Hammer Run is for 0 FE Basic Arena Warriors ONLY. Participants MUST Be Declared in the P-ads On or Before their First DM 33 Basic Arena Fight to Qualify as a Hammer Runner! Winners of Each Category will receive 5 New Team Roll Up Gift Certificates mailed from RSI courtesy of Hammer! [On the condition that they Graduate on or before T-500; see amended rules below!] The following Style Master categories remain open with a listing of how many declared contestants are still entered and their W/L recognition record at the time of their disappearance from the Hammer Run competition: (P-ad declarations in parenthesis) [Manager name/Stable name in brackets] followed by their last known W/L recognition ranking Rippers Category Now Closed for Hammer Run as of T-475 01. The purpose of this contest is to restore DM 33 to a lively and entertaining arena! Hammer is willing to foot the Prize bill in a last ditch effort to save Niytyole Island from deletion if RSI and the Gladiatorial Commission decide that more arenas need to be closed due to lack of participation and interest. Should this effort fail to spare DM 33 from deletion, then Hammer is prepared to transfer CASINO HAMMERZ to another arena if Niytyole Island is closed by RSI and the Gladiatorial Commission.
