"But I was ALREADY on an adventure!" Analira said. "I was going to rescue my
teammate--I'm a gladiator--"
"We know that, lass. We were gladiators ourselves, before so many arenas were
closed." The Dwarf walking beside her looked as mournful as a beard and nose could.
"I was the Khalhums Dwarf of Sibikhas. Gilglas Blackbrow." He bowed.
"Oh...sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. I'm Analira, from Niania."
     "Ah, Gobiann Strongaxe's arena--"
"Yes, well, he's the problem! He kidnapped my teammate!"
One of the other Dwarves asked a question in Dwarvish. Gilglas replied with a
series of staccato sounds that seemed angry.
Finally one of them said to her, "That's outrageous! Gobiann HAS a job, he's no
need to take to banditry!" This Dwarf, who was mainly distinguished by a dense mane
and beard of brick red curls--to the extent that he seemed to have no face at all--
muttered something in Dwarvish, then bowed. "Hrolvar Redbeard, me. I was in
Dullens." He paused. "Or maybe it was Khalani. One of those horsy places, anyway."
"So what is this fool Gobiann up to, then?" asked the tallest of the Dwarves
(five foot three and a half inches). "Kidnapping for ransom?"
"I don't know," Analira answered. She noted that they were out of sight of the
road now, not that the Shuttle had waited after she'd been led away. But it would be
easy to get lost in these mountains, which was NOT something she looked forward to.
"There was no ransom note. We think it was personal. And we're pretty sure he's
taken her to the Vale of Kalorie."
Hrolvar Redbeard hissed. "The Big Rock Candy Mountain! 'Tis not an honest
thing for any Dwarf to do!"
"Aye. We'll have to go and sort him out," Gilglas Blackbrow said. "And you'll
be coming with us, miss, to see fair play."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

I didn't expect to be Duel2Dude and went and wrote a regular personal. That
means I have to think of something ELSE to say, right? I'm not really GOOD at
thinking of things to say, you know. I'm not a verbal kind of guy.
But it's so cool to be on top, even just this once, and I love it. Maybe I'll
graduate, too!

                                    Yellow Pike

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
NIANIA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, GLORY BOUND TROLLS, since
THE GOLDEN FISH took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Of course,
we're all terribly impressed to see SCARDY CAT win a fight and gain 20 points,
terribly. Tsk, tsk, SCARDY CAT beat NEEBLES and NEEBLES lost 17 points. You're
breakin' my heart. PIP challenged NIANIA's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And
if variety is the spice of life, NIANIA may be getting bland, as YELLOW PIKE stays
top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you
think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. NIANIA,
I am losing what little hope I had in you. KNOT WHOLE the most avoided team? What
insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like GLORY BOUND TROLLS avoided them
the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Looks
like time for laurels or hemlock, NELLISTHA was challenged by OOZE-O, who was ranked
26 points below her. But here's a pretty tale--OOZE-O did lose the fight, but gained
3 worth of recognition. Some long shots can pay off, I guess.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for NIANIA's
morgue. More variety. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use.
Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
What does the NIANIA arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Just wait 'till next time I show
up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I
must leave now-- Snide Clemens

Ugg, death of a 10-0 TP by an NPC! Ohh, the irony! I have a TP sit on the throne
for 23 straight turns and then have 2 others killed. -- DeGotti

Sultan -- Thanks. I just don't recall you being that active in the personals is all.
I guess I just expected most, if not all, of the PA's to be from Nick in such a small
arena. -- DeGotti

Prowess -- (breathing heavily, eyes nearly crossed with the effort not to stare at
his opponent) It's an education, I mean, it's an honor to be matched against you. I
was really TRYING, and for the first minute, at least, I managed not to stare at
your...chest. And, er, developments. But I just couldn't keep it up. Or down. Or
to the side, either, for that matter. It's more than male flesh and blood can stand.
-- Yellow Pike

Pip -- You're not helping things, you rotten golem! I'd be a lot better off if I
could get some substantial wins here. I might actually escape, which is better than
I can expect if I wait for my teammates. Wandering around with Dwarves all the time!
How do they expect to get anything DONE? -- Abalonea

Formidable -- Yes, dear boy, I'm sure you are. Or can be. Practice at it. -- Lubaya

Oh, gods, I knew it, I just KNEW it. ALL these Dwarves are Khalhums Dwarves that
have been put out of work by the closing of arenas across Alastari. One of them even
had his face ripped off! -- Analira

A Convicted Assassin? A KARRAGIT assassin? I suppose I should be GLAD he was
caught, as a sign that the Karragit haven't mastered assassination yet, but what
about the others? How many Karragit assassins are walking our streets undetected,
striking from hiding, decimating the oligarchs of Niania? I think we may be in need
of a crusade here. -- Nellistha

Prowess -- I sincerely hope you graduate soon, and me, too! I'd feel a lot better
about this adventure if I weren't mortal. -- Abalonea
P.S. Watch out for the Dwarves, though.

Battle Royal 4
The Battle Royal arena contests are one of the purest tests of manager skill
available. The rules are simple. The scoring is simple. The updates are live. If
you would like to participate, simply get a team ready in Talcama in the next month
and announce in the personals that you're in. The prize is bragging rights and
having your name along side previous winners (Doc Steele, Manray Frothingslosh, and
Manager). It is a brutal contest, but it is a lot of fun!
Basic rules: No avoiding other contest teams. Score = Wins + Kills - Losses.
Only fights against other BR teams count. First team to 25 wins!
BR4 begins in Talcama (DM 18) on turn 502, due on Jan 29, 2005.
     Visit http://www.geocities.com/assurnasir/br4 for more information.
