                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Talocco, a member of the Cult of Ricassino and sometime gladiator, fidgeted with
his beer mug, making overlapping wet circles on the table as he waited. The Two-
Headed Pig was the bar favored by the standbys of Niania, but he didn't come here
much. It didn't do to be the worse for liquor when summoning a demon. Especially
now, when demons were so restless and disobedient. But sometimes you had to go into
a bar, and even sip a beer, to maintain good relations with the other Standbys. But
he didn't have all DAY to waste here. Where were the others? Tarash Tarindanall,
the Embezzling Scribe, had called the meeting. Where was HE?
Tarash sauntered into the bar's main room from somewhere in the back. Talocco
knew there were private rooms back there, but the damned fool hadn't said anything
about meeting back there! If this was all some sort of plot to put him in the
wrong.... The cultist bristled, ready to take offense.
"Good, you're here!" Tarash sat down across from Talocco and leaned toward him.
"It's just the two of us," he whispered. "This isn't something to share with louts
like Zag the Dip."
Talocco's mood rose. To be a member of a select group of two, privy to secrets
too dangerous to share, was like wine to him. He also leaned forward and whispered.
"Tell me, then. What is it?"
"Demons!" The Embezzling Scribe hunched his shoulder and glanced around as
though he expected a demon to appear at any moment. "I do the accounts for several
ferry companies--"
"They trust you not to embezzle?"
The scribe's brows drew together. "It's just a stupid name," he said. "I don't
steal from my regular clients! Besides, some of them would-- Well, we don't need to
go into that. The point is that several of the ferry captains are saying that the
swamp is bubbling like a pot of stew. Not a run goes by but what they see strange
creatures--sometimes are attacked by strange creatures, and by the descriptions I've
gotten, some of those creatures are demons!"
The cultist suppressed a shudder. He knew that there were demons loose in the
world who hadn't been summoned and weren't bound by any standard agreement. He
couldn't help knowing; every time a demon slipped through the veil into Alastari, it
made a disturbance in what was left of the Arcanum.
"The demons are interfering with the traffic through the swamp," the scribe went
on. "Several ferrymen have refused to go out again at all, and you know the city
needs that traffic, needs the goods going in and out. If we can do something to make
it safe again--"
     "We?"
"I have the contacts among the boatmen," the scribe said, "and you know about
demons, so why not? We'll be public benefactors! Heroes! We can name our price!"

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome NIANIA. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have
I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... What's with NUGGET MCGOLD?
She actually beat GLORY BOUND TROLLS' ROCKZAR, and walked away with 18 more points
from the fight. Laughs were big at THE GOLDEN FISH while they watched NUGGET MCGOLD
clobber ROCKZAR. It lost 15 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the
stands. Apparently NIANIA isn't filled with as many gutless wonders as I thought.
The Dreaded Duelmaster got 2 challenges this turn! Another fighter (SCARDY CAT
8-0-0) challenged another Duelmaster (PIP 13-8-0). Life goes on. I'm sure NIANIA is
excited about SCARDY CAT, the new Duelmaster from ARENA FELINES. (remember?) But
when you've seen as many as I have... I suppose you want to hear some rumors and
dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges...
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. How long have I been here? I got people to see,
places to go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
The end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

Rockzar -- Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't we done this before? Not that we
have much choice in opponents, and you didn't kill me, so I can live with it. --
Mellisande the weary and aching
P.S. Oh, right, "Good fight." You performed well, even if I can't say the same for
myself.

Dangerous Criminal? I'll say! I can't think of any time lately when I've heard of
anyone DEFEATING the Dangerous Criminal. I thought standbys were supposed to be
EASY. Sure couldn't prove it by this guy. -- Spike McGold

I suppose the Convicted Thief is good at something, but I can't imagine what. Not at
stealing, or he wouldn't have been convicted. And certainly not at gladiating. I
one-shotted him and he got desperate and gave up. Wimp. -- Mellita

Beggars shouldn't be fighters, no matter how persistent they are. If they fight,
that makes them muggers. -- Nugget McGold

That slimy little thief (where do they find these losers?) thought he could help
himself to my backup weapon. Ha! When the Shark bites, that's all she wrote. --
Golden Shark

Ms. McGold -- The arenamaster made me do it! -- Resero, Beggar by trade

Mellita -- Gods, woman, that's my pocket-picking arm you were trying to cut off!
You'll run me out of a job if you do that. -- Zag the Dip, so I'm a thief, sue me
P.S. And don't let that Golden Shark near me! I thank the gods that there were
other thieves waiting to serve their time in the arena.

Spike McGold -- You're an incredible wimp. I'd've killed you if the arenamaster
hadn't stepped in. We don't need your kind around here. -- Red Barkol, Dangerous but
no Criminal (the judge was biased)

20 April 2005
I have returned after a five-year absence. I expect all tithes, gifts and bequeaths
to resume as normal. -- Magic Man

4 May 2005
Several questions have been asked about Slaughter's Challenge that I'd like to
address and clarify.
     1) All Prizes must be used on the contest team, this includes the resurrection.
Remember any fast arena team should be able to transfer to a slow arena
(except for arena 82, I believe).
     2) Warriors will be allowed to fight and run in the dead tourney, should there
be one, and return if an opening can be made without breaking the rules
(i.e. only one DA fight allowed per team).
     3) If you win your single DA match you do not get another. It's one use of the
Dark Arena win or lose so if you want him/her/it dead be sure and throw the
         match!
     4) The resurrection potion's longevity has been extended by the commission to 6
months but the other potions (favorites, and +1 bonus) must still be used
within 2 turns and on a 5 FE or higher warrior. The resurrection can go on
         any warrior regardless of FE.
Street Legal

P.S. My thanks to those already entered (Hammer, The Consortium, Tripwire, Stik, and
Shaman) and hope many more find a reason to come to arena 54. Again, my email is
triumph1971@hotmail.com or you can diplo me in arena 14 at THE DEATH SQUAD (63) if
you need more info!
