Somewhere near Niania:
The two lakes that bordered Alastari were nearly tideless, and the waters around
Niania were even more sheltered, but something caused the water level to rise and
fall twice a day. No one had ever explained the phenomenon satisfactorily. It was
simply something that happened. Just as the water was inexplicably but reliably salt
when it was high, and fresh when it fell to lower levels.
Saesarre, a member of the semi-secret cult of Ricassino, did not speculate on
the cause of the inland tides. No doubt Ricassino had a reason, and it was not his,
Saesarre's, place to fathom it. But what the falling water exposed, ah, that was a
different matter! He glanced over his shoulder at a lightning-blasted tree, over the
other shoulder at a clump of wolftails parasitized by blood orchids, and twitched a
paddle to keep his canoe from drifting too far from the spot he had chosen. If he
was not misreading his landmarks, he should be within a paddle's length of the...
whatever it was, when it was exposed at low tide. A wreck of some kind, he thought.
Wrecks were often the source of valuable salvage, as any follower of Ricassino knew.
Of course, according to the bylaws of the cult, he should have registered the
site of his "probable wreck" and brought at least two other members with him to
investigate. He had done that with his last discovery, and he'd barely gotten a
couple of bashari for his share after it was salvaged, the operating expenses paid,
and the money divided. He wouldn't be such a fool again!
The level of the tea-colored water, as measured against the trunk of the
lightning-struck tree, crept downward. Perhaps Ricassino was sucking it downward
with a giant straw? No, too frivolous. It was probably caused by something
astrological. He had heard that the moons of the veiled planet Hokomosh moved in a
similar period. A piece of wood that Saesare took for the rib of a ship,
waterlogged, black, slimy with some kind of rust-colored growth, pierced the surface.
The cultist stiffened to attention. The charts suggested that today the water
would reach a lower low than normal, and much of the wreck, already identified in his
mind as a treasure ship, would be exposed.

Well, I'm SURE the Veteran Mercenary did his VERY BEST in that match, and I
appreciate it, I really do. Since there is no one ELSE who wants to be Duel2Dudette,
obviously I will do it. I'm very public-spirited, you see. But I'm glad I got the
title on a WIN, because anything else would be such an insult to past gladiators of
Niania. And Korvoskol Turo knows this. He lost very well, managing to make it CLEAR
to all spectators that I had to FIGHT for the title. And what more can one ask of an
opponent?

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out NIANIA to see
what's new. MVP award for GOLDEN SHARK? THE GOLDEN FISH's proud of him after
beating DANGEROUS CRIMINAL and getting 22 points. Talk about yer major upsets!
MELLISANDE's match with VETERAN MERCENARY cost her a loss of 4 points! Was that a
tear I saw in YOBER's eye, as he took over Duelmastership? And wasn't MELLITA fit to
be tied! Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys
can do?
