"It's infamous!" Ardane, spy reporter for Andorak, scowled and drew back his
arm to throw his goblet through the window at the crowd outside. Then paused to
drain the contents before resuming the about-to-throw-it position.
"Now, now, it isn't THAT bad." Desiree of Darkholm, always the voice of sweet
reason at these meetings, laid a hand on his, smiled, and guided the goblet back to
the table. "It's just a little mistake, you know."
"Ha!" Debby Tonte of Free Blades stabbed viciously into her drink with an
umbrella. "That's easy for YOU to say. The Delarquans aren't complaining."
"Of course not." Galen of Talahya looked faintly envious as she pulled a chunk
of pineapple out of her glass and began to nibble it. "That's because the Delarquans
are THE Masters of Kung-Fu."
"You think some managers are complaining," Olaf Modeen said, "you should hear
what the GLADIATORS are saying. All these rumors about the Aimed Blows having
'special enhancements'..." he shook his head. "I know it isn't true, you know it
isn't true, the top managers know it isn't true--"
"Of course it isn't true!" Ketchum, spy reporter for Crysalis, matched scowls
with Ardane and said, "If ANY one style was going to get a special enhancement, it
should be--"
"Not now, Ketch," Olaf said. "Nobody gets, nobody has gotten, nobody WILL get,
special enhancements. That's always been the rule, and we all know how the Greywand
hates changes. The real problem--"
"Try telling that to some of the managers," Debby muttered, peering into her
glass for more fruit. "They don't want to hear it. Every time I turn around, some
manager is claiming that someone got a special change and, you know, HE didn't and
it's all unfair."
"The REAL problem," Olaf said firmly, over-riding her voice, "is explaining to
all the second-rate Aimed Blows why they haven't received any of these 'special
enhancements' they keep hearing about."
"There aren't any special enhancements," Ardane growled. "None. Just managers
who noticed that the Kung-Fu Master is a lot more dangerous than anyone expected, and
have put YEARS into the study of Kung-Fu and learned how to really USE it for their
own gladiators."
"Saved a lot on weapons, too," Ketchum murmured.
"But people keep complaining," Debby Tonte said. She fished one last piece of
fruit out of her glass and stared at it dubiously.
"There WERE no special enhancements," Olaf said. "There ARE no special
enhancements. There WILL BE no special enhancements. It's all a matter of deep
study and skilled management."
"Like anyone's going to believe that!"
"They have no choice," Ketchum said. "If no 'special enhancements' were given
out, then none can be taken back. It is the way it is. What's the point in
complaining because the sun rises in the east?"

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Geroge Krag, orcish Master of Kung Fu. I'd like to say something printable
about him, he's an orc, for one thing, and he beat me, for another, but I don't think
that's a workable plan. But I'm really glad he didn't get made Duel2Dude. Gods, an
orc? Horrid thought.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly NIANIA games. Former top team THE GOLDEN FISH was
unseated this week as TEAM HAVOK moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with
a 5-0-1 record for the round. KORONEDUS caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested FRATSFA SLAVE and was awarded 9 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, THE USEROUS MERCHANT put down
SASHINDA, causing her to lose 6 points of recognition in the process. Although 4
BRIDGES made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious
LARSEN E. Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week,
the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. NIANIA, city of gladiators!
Mighty among the names of thy guilds is THE GOLDEN FISH, a guild shunned and avoided
by many in the weekly duels. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it
was that spent the better part of last week avoiding THE GOLDEN FISH. Indeed it was
OUT THE WINDOW.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! The warrior's path is harsh. For mediocrity there
is but one reward--death. This past week FINDELLIS, at 7-5-1, departed NIANIA
forever. I must report the passing of VERELESSE, veteran of many duels. 5-4-1 final
record Hers was not illustrious--but death plays no favorites. Dark alleys may hide
both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel.
Keep vigil always!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in NIANIA. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell,
and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

4 Bridges -- I find you so confusing. Which way should I go? -- Findellis

I would not be an Ambitious Guard for any reward you could offer me. -- Sashinda

They tell me the Ambitious Guard gets paid well for his efforts in the arena, and I
say, Gods, I hope so! I do believe the man comes out in magical hobbles! --
Verelesse

Somebody should tell the Captured Orc about pacing, and not leading with his face.
Maybe the Kung-Fu Master, since he's an orc, too. -- Koronedus

Spiritual Pain -- Ah, that is what I feel when I see that the people who have the
money are unworthy of it. Therefore, I do my poor best to take it away from them,
using the skills I have. -- Tarash Tarindanall, Equalizing Scribe

Fatal Angel -- Whew! I'm glad you didn't live up to your name. -- Zag the Dip
P.S. But I have to live up to mine, or I don't eat.

Hand of Hell -- I see that you ARE one of those unworthily wealthy fiends. -- Tarash
Tarindanall, Equalizing Scribe

Vendetta -- We Thieves understand that concept, but that doesn't stop us from plying
our trade, you know. -- Trasti Ironfingers

Iron Gypsy -- Is there no charity in your soul? -- Ressero, Beggar in Good Standing

Kornonedus -- You laugh now, slimy swamp-dweller, but you will not laugh for long! --
Doland Sork, Captured Orc about to escape from bondage

Verelesse -- You are cruel and hard-hearted, but if you should happen to be my secret
admirer, I will forgive you much. -- Moro Salleshi, Ambitious Guard

Sashinda -- Ah, I made you work for that, little lady! Three clashes before things
started unraveling. If I hadn't had a "weak side" for you to rush to, I'd've won
that. -- Moro Salleshi, Ambitious Guard

Larsen E -- You're a disgrace to your position, man. As a representative of Niania,
the "highest ranked gladiator in the city," you're pathetic. Have you no idea how to
block, to parry, or even to dodge? Is your only philosophy of battle to hope that
you can take out your opponent before you accumulate too much damage yourself to go
on? I called you pathetic, and it is true. -- Geroge Krag, Kung-Fu Master
P.S. Maybe even an understatement.
