She'd recently had her hair trimmed to make sure there was no beehive effect. "Come in," she called distractedly in answer to a knocking at her door. "Oh, hi, Gavin." Gavin hopped up to sit on the corner of her desk and smiled disarmingly. His features were more cute than handsome. He had on a holey pair of baggy jeans, a dark blue tee-shirt with the G.I. Joe logo proudly displayed, an old, frayed orange ball cap worn backwards, and beat-up pair of airwalks on his feet. If not for the shrewdness in his eyes, one might assume him to be a five-foot-tall thirteen-year- old. "How's my favorite duelist faring?" he asked, swinging his feet nonchalantly. Brandy spared him a glance and rolled her eyes at him. "Your NEW favorite, you mean. As soon as Bubba gets his record back up, you'll be fawning all over him again." She set her paints down and studied her work. "That's assuming I lose my record, though." "You're doing well, no one can doubt that... for now. Your brother, too." She huffed and turned to him. "My brother is a thick-skinned, strong-armed, stuck-on-honor teddy bear. He shouldn't even be in there." She met his eyes as she forded onward. "He's got too big of a heart for fighting. Still, you talked him right into it with his foolish pride. Sending him up against Gallordin was stupid. He isn't ready." She lowered her gaze to avoid seeing the anger kindling in Gavin's dark eyes. "Stupid? Gallordin has, what, forty fights on Bubba? Reckless, maybe... dangerous, yes, but never... never stupid." Brandy bit her lip to collect her thoughts. She knew it wasn't her place to second-guess her manager, but... "Plate armor was stupid." Gavin paused, his legs ceasing their swinging as he let out a bark of laughter. "Yes, plate armor was a bit much," he conceded. "And helm. My brother doesn't like his vision obstructed. I wouldn't have gone heavier than scale," she stated firmly as she put away her things. "I'm your best fighter... I wouldn't be here if you hadn't suckered my brother with your illusions of fortune and fame." "Illusions?" Gavin replied lightly. "Don't play coy with me, Brandy. I've never lied to any of you. You also know that my illusions are all possible and very real." "Just as real as the possible consequences of pursuing those illusions." She threw open the lid to her trunk and begin sifting through the clothing angrily. Gavin tilted his head to the side slightly as he mulled over her words. He would have to watch her in the future. She was no fool, as she might have others believe. He searched her face for clues and calculated each movement as it came to him. "So Bubba lost, I expected him to... everyone did. Hell, the odds were thirty- two to one. Everyone expected him to lose." He watched her toss items on the bed and swung his legs back and forth patiently. If it was a waiting game she wanted, she'd lose. His shoelace had come untied and made a click-click with each swing of the foot. She tossed down a silk blouse and took a deep breath to stir up her courage. "I want you to free Bubba from his obligations, sever his contract, and let him go home." "Do you think me to have lost all my senses?" Brandy balked and slammed the trunk lid with a loud BANG! She whirled on him as her anger flared. "You leave him alone! He plays down his wounds claiming they're nothing. He puts on a brave face but I'm the one who tends those wounds. He's going to end up with Eio or... worse." Gavin locked his gaze onto hers, keeping his silence until he saw the false courage the anger had stoked to embolden her flee. She lowered her head and sat heavily on the edge of the bed. "I'll win, I'll beat Gallordin or whatever else. Just let him go," she whispered. Gavin pondered her words. He knew how to listen. He also knew that sometimes it was what someone doesn't say that's important. What she didn't say was, "Or else I won't do any of those things because that's what you want and then my brother and I are going home." Brandy was stuck up but likeable in her own way. Had she, in her fury, considered his "or else"? Perhaps, Gavin thought. She may even think she could beat the DA. Perhaps she could... but if her brother, she'd be right behind. "He, you, everyone fights who I want." He slid off the desk and walked in front of her eye to eye. "If he fights difficult matches he learns more and faster. That keeps him alive. If he was good enough, he'd cut them to bloody ribbons before they could hurt him. You said it yourself. You hardly get hit. So, teach him. Don't waste my time with your whining." Gavin swept her clothing off the bed and rounded on her. "Stop going out whoring yourself around each night and save your brother." Brandy's eyes widened as her face turned three shades of red. She opened her mouth to reply only to clamp it back down again as the emotions were warring within her. The entire episode was so comical it was all Gavin could do not to burst into laughter. He did allow a small grin, though. Brandy clenched her jaw and flung open the trunk to toss the clothes back in. Then, in a moment of rebellious outrage, flung them back out. "What I do on my off time is none of your business. Besides, Bubba won't listen to me anyway. I teach him to thrust, he swings wide like he's trying to swat flies. I show him a riposte, he charges instead. It's hopeless." She seemed to deflate but then flung her hands to her hips. "And I am NOT whoring." Gavin raised his hands a moment in defeat and thrust his hands into his pockets. "Alright, have it your own way. Look, I can't promise anything with your brother. Don't look at me like that. You know I wouldn't intentionally hurt any of my fighters. You're training to be made immortal, if you remember. Chaos gates, monsters." Gavin shook his hands over his head emulating his best boogey man pose. "Sorry, Gav, you're right," Brandy sighed. He smiled again, glad he'd won this battle. "So who are you seeing tonight?" Brandy turned to gather the clothing to hid her face. "Eio at the hospital." Gavin grinned, having planned the same thing, but couldn't resist to press her buttons. "I didn't know they had conjugal visits at the hospital," he chimed. "Gavin! Oh, my god..." she had the decency to blush, "I don't date team members." "I wonder if Lilly thinks the same. She's been hanging around Bubba a lot." Brandy seemed momentarily stunned. Then, she narrowed her eyes and marched to the door. "She better not! Those numbers after her name have NOTHING to do with gladiating, I promise you." Gavin grinned big at that. "Now go. I have to change. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. I salute you, Bubba Bender, for an excellent effort, and for having worked your way up to the point where the handicapper would consider you for a title match. Perhaps another time. Gallordin SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of NIANIA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see GLOCK win a fight and gain 14 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, VETERAN MERCENARY beat GROND and GROND lost 9 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, NIANIA may be getting bland, as GALLORDIN stays top dog in the city. Jim's Tap Room, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From NIANIA's trash dumps? He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's the big D? PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like STEEL ARMS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, GOLDINA was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for NIANIA's morgue. More variety. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one. What does the NIANIA arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! Paste this one in your scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GALLORDIN 5486 28 20 1 120 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -BRANDY PINKERTON 5565 8 1 1 88 PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE (657) KESTRATLAK 5511 22 14 0 80 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) GROND 5540 16 12 0 80 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) GULBY 5558 13 6 1 80 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) -BUBBA BENDER 5566 6 3 0 73 PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE (657) -EIO YUE 5568 6 3 0 71 PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE (657) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TWO-STEP 3426 5 4 1 58 DEADLY DANCERS (424) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LAW 5574 8 1 0 49 STEEL ARMS (658) GOLDINA 5563 8 5 0 39 THE GOLDEN FISH (147) GLOCK 5571 5 4 1 39 STEEL ARMS (658) -HAUS HEUS 5567 5 4 0 36 PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE (657) -LILLY PEPPER 5564 6 3 0 35 PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE (657) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LUGER 5576 3 4 0 31 STEEL ARMS (658) LOMBATTA 3970 2 1 0 27 DEADLY DANCERS (424) BARETTA 5573 4 2 1 25 STEEL ARMS (658) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DISCO DAN 3938 3 2 0 21 DEADLY DANCERS (424) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN Revenge? PERSONAL ADS I'm incredibly proud of my warriors thus far, even the recent 1-4 round. Damn the record, those were some tough battles. Well done as well, warriors of the Goldenfist. By the way, isn't it time for Gallordin to graduate? It would make our lives so much easier! -- Gavin Rule, P.B.F. Goldina -- You're as deadly as you are lovely. How dare Lilly strike you. I'm glad you bested her. Honey mead it is! Then perhaps I can ease your mind and then your hurts. -- Haus You're so lame, Haus. I almost had you, Goldina, I think. Those face shots weren't very nice though. Do you know how much makeup it takes to cover that stuff up? No, you wouldn't. I imagine your idea of dressing up is a pair of trousers, clay on the face and fish oil behind the ear. *smirk* But if you want to learn, just ask. -- Lilly Pepper Eio Yue -- It's probably significant of something that in naming you, your manager left out the Ae Eye. But as to what the significance is, no idea. -- Grond Brandy Pinkerton -- Yep, well, we're obviously talking about very GOOD brandy here. It'd be a shame to get drunk on it, but I do enjoy a sip now and then. -- Kestratlak Haus Heus -- Hmm, you probably need a haus frau to get things into balance. -- Gulby Two-Step -- I bet there were more than two steps there. -- Goldina Time to answer the copious, small-type personals in the preceding newsletter does not appear to be with us today. Sorry about that, but it happens. -- Jorja We're shooting for the charter, expensive business. Eio's run-in with Grond landed him under the care of Doctor Smiley. A warhammer to the knee is nothing to scoff at! We regret having to miss the next turn, mostly due to gathering finances. We made it six months on $50! Maybe I'll name my next team Penniless. Welcome Steel Arm and Death Dancers; it's a pleasure to see new faces. -- Gavin Rule, P.B.F. Gallordin -- Sometimes learning what NOT to do is even more important. I hate feeling like a sardine. -- Bender P.S. The difference between loitering and littering is: one assumes you're hanging around against someone else's wishes; the other assumes you're just lying around because you're trash. Not that *I* would insinuate that. I've lost twice to you now. Kestratlak -- Momma told me the key to bringing a man to his knees was his stomach and groin. Guess she was right. I'd give up and scream in pain, too. -- Brandy Gulby -- Why must you vex me? -- Haus Disco Dan -- Disco is SOOO yesterday. Thought I'd show you some new dance steps, sugar. I hope you were paying attention. I rarely dance for free. -- Lilly Jorja -- I had to keep up the record and awards just so I could afford to play. Hopefully, when I return in a turn or two, I can concentrate more on skills. Also, neither of my questions were answered. Should I send them again? -- Gavin Probably. Although if it's about the Question of the Week you submitted, it's only just appeared in Aruak City. We're thinking of posting it to Lapur, also, as that is currently a more active arena. Kestratlak -- Actually, my brother's name is Aey, how did you know? My friends always got a kick when Dad called us in for dinner. He did have a rather morbid sense of humor. My sister was lest fortunate. I hope she gets married soon. Her name's Wye Yue. Do I know you from somewhere? -- Eio Law -- I see you have a nice record, almost as good as mine. Our time off should give you the chance to catch up. Then I'd be curious to see who wins out of the two of us. Of course, a gentleman would let the lady win, but I won't hold you to that. 'Kay? -- Brandy Great start in Niania, Steel Arms, and a good showing, Dancers. Feel free to diplo advice, bad jokes, boredom, etc. -- Gavin Rule, Peanut Butter Fudge All -- Does anybody have a clue on successfully running an AB? Granted, I'm doing okay, have some good ideas and a few resources, but I'd love to hear it from "the horse's mouth," so to speak. I mean... with little decise, only some rip, and moderate defenses.... Sure, you can land some hard, precise blows. If you get to swing. Anyone? -- Gavin LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS DISCO DAN was devastated by GOLDINA in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge fight. GALLORDIN vanquished VENOMOUS CONCUBINE in a exciting 1 minute uneven Title battle.
