Gavin's clothes were ripped and mud-stained. His hat was stolen along with what coin he had carried with him and his sneakers sprouted another hole. He'd had enough of this part of town called Fleabottom. From the way the place and most of the people looked, it was no wonder where this part of town had earned its name, and Gavin was not happy. Bubba hadn't shown up for training or dinner or the meeting. Days went by and Gavin had been peeved. Brandy had finally mentioned her brother had gone to Fleabottom but wasn't sure exactly where, though she was sure it was south of Beggar Hill and probably not the Flats. By the time gavin found Bubba, it was late in the day. He was exhausted and his annoyance was palpable. Bubba sat on the steps of a ramshackle church that looked cobbled together with refuse and odd-shaped panels in a vague representation of a building. All around him sat dozens of children, mostly garbed in grubby patchwork clothing. One little girl sat perched on his knee, staring up at him with big blue eyes. She couldn't have been older than three or four. She had a shock of blonde curls and dusty feet. She nibbled on a cookie, as most of the others did. Bubba spied Gavin with a look of surprise and gave the little girl on his knee a bounce. "Gavin, hi. I didn't expect you out here." "Don't expect it again, either," Gavin growled angrily. "What in the name of all the gods do you think you're doing?" Bubba blinked in surprise, closing his mouth, and furrowed his brows slightly. He was baffled at Gavin's agitation. It was clear he was hostile from the way Gavin's fists were balled and his dark eyes flashed. His lip and eye was slightly swollen as well, and a large rip showed on his shirt. All said, he almost fit in here in Flea Bottom. The thought made Bubba smile. "You look... Well, are you all right?" Bubba asked. "Yes, I'm just peachy," Gavin snapped, running a hand through his hair. "What happened? I've just been telling stories, mostly," Bubba admitted. "Stories?! You've missed meetings and training sessions to tell a few beggar kids stories? Well, why didn't I think of that. Maybe when you face Grond or Gulby next you can *talk* them into giving up." Bubba frowned deeply at Gavin, as did some of the older kids. "You don't look so hot yourself, mister," a boy with rag shoes commented. "Want cookie?" a small girl offered with a shy smile. Gavin swatted the cookie away and headed up the steps to stand eye to eye with the sitting gladiator. Behind him, the cookie fell into the dirt, making the little girl's eyes water. "You can't just disappear, damn it! I told you how precarious our position is. I need you in your top form. Brandy needs you." Bubba's face grew darker as Gavin continued his tirade. A small boy with a tough demeanor gave the little girl a hug as a tear rolled down her cheek. The girl on Bubba's knee innocently grasped Gavin's hand before he yanked away from her and wiped his hand on his pants as if it were unclean. "I've walked I don't know how many miles, lost my favorite hat, put a hole in my shoe, stepped in horse refuse... I think and let's not leave out being mugged," Gavin raged. "You're supposed to be learning how to keep the initiative, not telling stories to a bunch of dirty brats in this slummy cess-pool part of town. You've wasted enough of my time. You did sign a contract, if you happen to recall. Now, let's go." Bubba was red from the neck up and nearly shaking. His gaze became so intense it forced Gavin back a step. "'Least you got shoes, mister," a biggar boy scowled and rubbed his nose with the back of his hand as he stood up. "Yeah. Come on, sis," another ratty boy said, gathering the young girl who'd lost her cookie by the hand. "This slummy cess-pool's startin' ta stink 'round here." In twos and threes, the children muttered like comments and shot Gavin fierce looks before giving Bubba a hug or a slap before wandering off. Bubba's gaze stayed on Gavin until they all left, except the little girl on his knee. Gavin swallowed as his anger turned sour and shame washed over him. "Tanda, say hi to Gavin, my manager. Gavin, meet my daughter. I just found out." Gavin paled. "Oh Bubba, I'm sorry, I--" "You didn't think, you arrogant, selfish, pathetic little man. I should tear you apart, in all rights!" Gavin felt a stab of fear for a moment as Bubba stood and set the little girl down with a kiss. "I have to go, sweety. Go to your momma." He watched the girl enter the church, then took a long step and snatched Gavin by the arm. "Let's go," Bubba said icily. "I wouldn't want to subject you to these kind of people." "Ow! Hey!" Gavin's feet made small furrows in the dirt as he was dragged along bodily. He strugged but Bubba's grip wouldn't budge. "Stop!!" When that failed to work, Gavin began to worry. "Okay, truce?" Bubba marched onward, ignoring him, gathering curious glances from passersby. "I'm sorry, damn it! Let me GO!" Bubba dropped him into the dirt. "Keep your apologies. It's the children you should apologize to. They deserve better, all of them. I buy them food and what I can afford. I tell them stories and teach them schooling." Bubba glance back. "I should thank you. If they didn't know before, they know now what faces them in the real world. People like you." He lengthened his strides and Gavin let him go. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 630): DOOMTAIL of EVIL BEAVERS (Dark One, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. You're a fine figure of a woman, Brandy, but that isn't always enough, eh? And not because I'm a "golem," there's a story behind that which we don't need to go into now, but in the ways that affect this particular issue, I'm as human as you are. So take the skills and thank me properly, and tomorrow will be another day. Kestratlak SPY REPORT You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf Modeen. I return to NIANIA once again! What's with GOLDINA? She actually beat NIANIA's KHALHUMS DWARF, and walked away with 15 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at NIANIA while they watched KUNG-FU MASTER clobber GULBY. He lost 28 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Try as he might, KUNG-FU MASTER wasn't good enough at persuading KESTRATLAK to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough! Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. GLOCK, with hers forgettable 6-7-1, was killed by AMBITIOUS GUARD in a forgettable match. STEEL ARMS didn't seem to mind very much. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty. Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf. Olaffighterwork and no play. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and good luck. Damn Murphy's law! I wasn't kidding when I said that the free turns were the only reason I could continue to play. The Golden Fish came back strong and with excellent strategy. Kudos to Kestratlak. Unfortunately, this means PBF will be on a short hiatus while we search couch cushions for change. -- Gavin Rule Kestratlak -- And when we're cold, well, you know. Team work indeed. -- Bubba Grond -- How many times have I heard that line? you men are so unoriginal, but that's okay. If you suddenly become clever we'd start to worry. -- Lilly P.S. Maybe another time. The Commission would ban us for sure if we put on that kind of show on the sands. Jorja -- I know you're as busy as I am poor. I'll keep stories coming to fill the gaps or until I get too many complaints. -- Gavin All -- Greeting. Is pleasure to be here. I honor you all. Well done. -- Bubba Bubba Bender -- And this time, I benda you. Works for me. -- Gulby, not a golem in any way or sense Two-Step -- Consider that a two-step fight. They look cool, but they're not so great in a real fight. Bummer. -- Grond Bubba -- But if, in desperation, you have no choice but to lose, don't DIE. -- Kestratlak Gavin -- Darned if I know. They got signed on when I was on the other side of the country, and I'm stuck with them. But I'm beginning to have some dark suspicions anent their origins. It might bear looking into, if I can find the time. -- Jorja P.S. When I look through the list of graduates from this team, I don't seem to find much in the way of golems, so either they're designed to die, or they're a recent occurence.
