Xochithlan, the royal palace:

Tirisha Dulake leaned closer to her cousin, King Feyen, and pouted. "You can't
be so hard hearted, Pootles," she cooed. "It isn't like I'm asking a LOT from
you...."
Feyen was too dark skinned to blush noticeably, but he felt himself getting
rather warm under the collar. "Don't call me that!" he hissed. [It is a gift in the
royal family of Xochithlan to be able to hiss words which contain no esses.] "You're
the only one who remembers that Mother used to call me that! But what if someone
overhears?" He peered around nervously. Eavesdropping was the national pastime in
Xochithlan, but he thought his throne room was reasonably secure. Still, if anyone
heard her say that name.... He shuddered.
"If you'll give me the soldiers, dearest cousin, I'll be so busy and so far
away, I'm sure I'll forget."
"But Tirisha, I can't! If I sent Xochithlani Royal Guardsmen into Mordanti
territory, it could start a war, or at LEAST," he shuddered again, "Samir would send
that battlemage of his to 'make an official protest' and the man has NO sense of
style at all. His hair, his beard!" King Feyen stroked his own perfect little
mustache. "It's impossible, Tirisha, you must see that!"
"No, it is NOT impossible." Her coo was getting ragged around the edges,
letting the iron determination show through. She took a deep breath, noting that,
as with every other man who saw her do that, she had riveted Feyen's attention; after
all, they were only second cousins on one side. "You don't need to send the whole
Royal Guard. I'm sure I won't need a thousand men in Rodeki. It's such a LITTLE
place. A hundred will be enough to protect me, DEAR Feyen." She blew in his ear.
Feyen took his own deep breath and managed not to melt on the spot. "Well...a
hundred men, then, but no more! And not in Royal Xochithlani uniform, either!"
"Of course not, coz." She patted his arm as she straightened up. "I wouldn't
want anyone to get the idea they were on YOUR business." She slid out of reach just
a little ahead of King Feyen's reaching hands. "You won't have any trouble at all
over this, dear coz."

Arenamaster Xoron, a practitioner of the Ancient Elvish Martial Art of Seelie-
Khuei, was deeply resistant to feminine wiles. He was, however, extremely interested
in cash. Tirisha had plenty of cash.
"I guess I could find you a few gladiators to serve as a personal bodyguard," he
muttered, mentally fingering the coins Tirisha had placed on the table between them.
"I couldn't vouch for their reliability, though."
"I will attend to that," Tirisha said briskly. "Twenty ounces of gold for every
gladiator you can find me. Payable when they sign up."

Warriors and managers are invited to accompany Tirisha Dulake to Rodeki, or wherever
she may end up going. A note in the personals addressed to Scribe, or an email to
Livia@reality.com will do it.

Jhans:

"That is a fight you cannot win, Princess Morra," Chancellor Ethylbyrr said. He
leaned forward to emphasize his point, one hand on the report that had sparked the
discussion. "It is better not to enter a battle you cannot win."
     "Darron wouldn't--"
"Princess, your brother is no longer a boy, he is a young man now," the old man
said. "He will not be pleased to receive...advice from his older sister, much less
commands. Even without his new friends, he would be reluctant to--"
"All right, you've made your point." She looked away. Looked out the window
across the city of Jhans, but she didn't really see it. Didn't want to see it, if
the truth be told. She was surprised to realize that what she really wanted to see
at this moment was her husband, Gryzash the Golden. She had not felt strongly about
him one way or the other, theirs had been a marriage of political expediency. But
Gryzash was--had been--a confident, decisive man. One whose very presence would awe
these quarreling nobles of Jhans into obedience. Unfortunately, Gryzash was dead.
Her thoughts shifted briefly to their son, Gorris. She might have stayed in Jhans to
fight the treacherous 'advisors' of her brother, except...it was her first duty to
protect her son and defend HIS heritage. Let Prince Darron worry about Jhans now.
It was time for her to leave him to it, for good or ill.
"I must take Gorris to Sibikhas," she said finally. "That is where my duty lies
now. That city is his to rule, by rights, but it is easier to hold onto power than
to win it back after it's been lost. Will you stay here and advise Darron?"
Ethylbyrr laughed sadly and shook his head. "The boy--the young man--wouldn't
have me," he said. "His new friends won't want to share the influence, and...I am a
reminder of his youth. Which he would prefer to forget as he strives to become a man
in his own eyes."
"If you remain in Jhans without a royal post, your life won't be worth--"
"It will be worth nothing at all," the old man said. "I will be dead by the
time you clear the city's gates."
She nodded. There was no mercy in the Delarquan Federation for someone who fell
from power. "Come with me to Sibikhas, then. It would be a shame to waste your wit
and experience, old friend."
The old man half rose from his seat across the table and bowed. "I would be
honored to serve you in Sibikhas or elsewhere, Princess." Seating himself again, he
said, "But you cannot simply decide to leave Jhans and then go. You will need, at
the very least, bodyguards. The Jhans Royal Guard you cannot take with you--they
belong here and will provide some protection from Darron, if he does not run
completely mad and dismiss them. So you will need--"
"Gladiators," she said firmly. "Two or three, at least, as many as half a dozen
perhaps. They are--"
"They are crude men, for the most part," Ethylbyrr protested.
"So? They are less likely than any others to have political axes of their own
to grind. I will have gladiators for bodyguards." She grimaced. "I will need
them."

This is a call for volunteers. A personal, or an email to Livia@reality.com will do
it.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

What? I'm the Duelmaster!? How can this be?
We've had a decent year here at AA, nothing great, but not too bad. I'd like to
dedicate my Duelmastership to the recently fallen Steve Sax. We haven't heard too
much from ole' Stevie since he went to California and now I guess we'll never get to
find out how he's doing since his transfer.
Well, I gotta jet. I think I hear the furious scribblings of Osksi managers
eagerly filling out their challenges this week.
     Bad luck to all!

               Mary Retzlaff
               American Appraisal

                                      SPY REPORT

Much has changed in OSKSI since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts
to many situations, as do all successful fighters. What's with THE CHIROPRACTOR? He
actually beat AMERICAN APPRAISAL's JOHN MAHER, and walked away with 19 more points
from the fight. Apparently OSKSI isn't filled with as many gutless wonders as I
thought. The Dreaded Duelmaster got 2 challenges this turn! AESIR's hatred of
AMERICAN APPRAISAL surfaced again as THOR challenged OSKSI's top dog. Try as he
might, THOR wasn't good enough at persuading MARY RETZLAFF to step down from the
Duelmaster's throne... Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was
AESIR. In my day, no team with a 528-532-39 would scare me off! What's the problem,
SIMPLY DESSERTS? WHIP SCORPION of SIMPLY DESSERTS knows how to pick 'em. She
challenged SIMEARTH of GAMES LIBRARY who is up by 18. Now was this a wise move?
WHIP SCORPION perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she overcame SIMEARTH and
ended up with 87 recognition points.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You
young rapscallions, take note!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? Are
you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

Simply Desserts -- We'll see how the replacement turns out. Regardless, The Famous
Hitters will at best be inactive for awhile, since this new recruit will be seeking
to run in tourneys as well as the arena. At worst, I'll be bringing in a new team to
represent myself here in Osksi. -- Assur

Stone Golem is one tough customer. -- Stan "The Man" Musial

Twitch -- That's a mild word for the way you were all over the place. -- The Goalie

G W Chimp -- Obviously whatever you are--some kind of hairy ape, apparently--you
are... Not Hoyle

Good gods, the travesty of it! Go Fish a Lord Protector? Admittedly he's not as bad
as Life was, but still! -- Nick the stunned
P.S. 9-15-18-9-15-5-13 TP, SM very low/low. At least the Commission got something
right--they have rated its courage and trustworthiness as low.

Managers don't understand warriors like me. The Veteran Mercenary never had a
chance. -- Lord Protector Go Fish

I shall make it a point not to encourage the evolution of Venomous Concubines.
They're a total waste of biomass. -- SimEarth

And M. Chardinee for me. Not exactly thrilling. -- Graph

Assur -- Well, it'd be easier to swing a great axe in a phone booth than a halberd,
that's for sure! -- Nick
P.S. Yes, I knew Folie's favorites stank on ice. Most of my warriors have similar
luck. I won't say I have the worst collection of immortal puds, but I'm a contender.
Don't go looking for her in Darkholm. She's retiring.
P.P.S. She probably wouldn't have graduated at all if Kaltos hadn't been so nearly
dead all the time she's been there.

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
