Kargaed Chardinee was a little surprised that Ambitious Guard Rossanarth had chosen to go with him to the mysterious tower. It wasn't that he doubted the elf's courage; no Rirorni who had fought the elves around Xochithlan would do that, and besides, any man who would enter the arena was either brave or a fool. Or both, of course. And Rossanarth was not a fool, that Kargaed had ever noticed. But the idea of having an elf as a comrade in a tight spot was...unusual. "We must be nearly there," Rossanarth said suddenly. His movement changed, making it clear that the taller warrior had his feet on the bottom. "I never heard of any shoal water here, so this must be the base of the tower's island." Kargaed tightened his grip on the piece of wood he'd caught and kicked awkwardly, trying to get close enough to touch bottom himself. It would feel very good to get his feet on something solid instead of having them dangling in the water. He hadn't wanted to panic and show himself afraid in front of the elf, but he WAS afraid. He was a horsemen, not a damned fish! "I can't see anything but water," Rossanarth said after a moment. He stretched upward to his full height, might even be standing on his toes. "I should be able to see the damned tower, but I can't!" "Illusion, in case anyone gets close," Kargaed guessed. He got far enough to have his own feet on the bottom and heaved a sigh of relief. Although he didn't let go of the floating wood. Just in case. "Why?" Rossanarth wanted to look at his companion but didn't. Just because he couldn't see anything didn't mean there was no danger. He had a piece of wood from the destroyed ships, too, but for him, it was a club, not a float. There was satisfaction in the Rirorni's voice. "Because it's vulnerable, somehow. The black tower can be destroyed, once we figure out how." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Nightfall #7 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Valamantis: Tensekai stared at the roil of ships, water, and drowning men around the black tower and nodded satisfaction. "Better than I'd hoped," he said. Arenamistress Sitalva turned to stare at the Silver Mage. "And I thought *I* was cold-blooded! Ships were destroyed and men died, Tensekai. How is this 'better'?" "Ships would have been destroyed and men killed regardless of what I did," the magician said. His voice was weary. "But I have learned something about the tower and its abilities. Enough, with luck, to make defeating it possible." "What--" A door slammed below them in Tensekai's tower. Tensekai sighed and wiped a hand across his face as though to wipe away fatigue. He straightened up. "Help me get into the damned official robe, Sita. That'll be Shanmarrik, wanting a report." "If we can't see the black tower," Rossanarth said, "how are we going to fight it?" "There'll be a way, and we'll find it," M. Kargaed Chardinee said. He waded a little farther until he was out of the water to mid-chest, then turned and looked back across the bay toward Valamantis. There was nothing visible but steel-colored water, dark rocks, and a gray sky. Either the invisibility of the tower was a two- way spell making the world that couldn't see the tower invisible FROM the tower, or they had been transported to some other dimension along with the (presumably) escaping tower. Or the lightning that had destroyed their ship had destroyed everything else in sight, as well, but that was a possibility that Kargaed was not going to contemplate. Besides, it was the lowest probability of the three options. "We need to get out of the water before we take a fatal chill," he said, wading farther. "A fatal chill. That's one way to describe it." The Guard shrugged and waded farther up the slope. He couldn't see dry land ahead, but it was still getting shallower as he walked, so at least they could get mostly out of the water. Of course, if a wind came up, they'd get a chill drying off. But at least they were doing something. Transel: "I don't care what the shipmasters say," Uvalie the Younger snapped. "We have good charts, and they don't show--" "The shipmasters know more about the state of the waters in this bay than any chart does," Chief Constable Tarkindor snapped back. "There are shoals and rocks in what used to be clear water, and storms that owe nothing to natural causes. There are magical hazards in Skybreak Bay, and something has got to be done about them. Soon," he added, overriding the woman's protest. "Shipping is the life-blood of Transel." He narrowed his eyes at her, pleased when she stepped back a little. These magicians were getting too cocky. "The people of Transel expect the Transchael Guild Arcane to protect them from such hazards. You are currently spokesman--" "That's spokes-PERSON!" "Whatever, for the Guild. So what are you doing about the problem?" "We're studying it." "Oh, THAT is great to hear! I'm sure the sailors will be delighted--those that haven't already vanished with their ships due to magical attacks." The (relatively) young woman drew herself up with more dignity than the Chief Constable had expected of her. "We'll...study faster," she said. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 529): FLAIR of WIND STORM (Lord Xiang, mgr.) Standing in front of the old two story house, he looked on as the men were making repairs and applying a fresh coat of paint. It had been many years since he had been here in the city of Osksi; almost four years to the day since he had been forced to leave on urgent business, after having just returning from being away for three years. Staring of into the sky , he thought of his absence and how it had been entirely too long. He has missed the feeling of family, created by living together in the guild house. The thrill of his charges winning in combat and yes even the pain of seeing one fall before someone's blade. "Hey boss?" shouted a burly young man from the roof. "Yes Cirrus," answered the man brought back to reality so suddenly. "Exactly how is this helping me with my arena training again?" "It helps with your vision, son," answered the manager with a smirk. Uldi, Elwerth, Notthur and Wirlitz burst into laughter at the remark. Cirrus, a confused look on his face, wondered what they were laughing about and replied, "OK boss, if you say so." "Good answer," chuckled Uldi to the other three. "Maybe he is learning after all," wondered Wirlitz raising an eyebrow. "Not likely," chided Notthur. "Yeah help his vision so he can fight better by torch light," cracked Elwerth. "OK back to work, boys," shouted the manager. Shaking his head inside his weathered cloak, he hoped Wirlitz was right. From down the street two men in cloaks approached him, "Well how did it go?" "Very well, sir," answered Specter quickly. Bael piped in handing him several pieces of parchment, "Yup boss, they never questioned the two of us registering the Sorcery Covenant team into the arenas again." Visionist nodded to the two, motioning them inside with him and shouted to the men, "Keep working we must finish by nightfall." In chorus the men all moaned, "Yes sir." Inside the house, a group of women were being supervised by a venerable woman. She had them moving in unison cleaning windows, polishing the tarnished brass fixtures and dusting everywhere. Upstairs another group was putting fresh linen on the beds. The cook was in the kitchen stocking supplies in the cabinets while. The windows had been opened trying to get some fresh air and remove the damp musty smell from being closed up for so long. Opening the door, Specter and Bael followed him down to the basement to his office. Once there he sat down and opened a drawer and placed the parchments inside and pulling out another he began looking it over. Specter and Bael pulled two chairs over and sat down across the desk from him. "OK, I need you two to go to the tailor and check on the shirt orders I placed for the members of the guild here and at the Isle." firmly stated the Visionist. "They should be ready today or tomorrow." "Yes sir," nodded Specter. "I will not have anyone associated with me looking like a ragamuffin." "Sir, will the shirts have the same emblem on them as before?" asked Specter. "Yes and no. The city teams will keep their same logos as before, but I have decided to give those on the Isle a new emblem to try and unify those there that have come from so many different places. I think it will help make everyone there feel more like a part of a family and in the end improve morale everywhere." explained the manager. "Good idea boss," agreed Bael. "When you two leave for the Isle you will take the Isle supply of shirts to your guildmates there understood?" "Give them to Gargantua; he will make sure everyone gets theirs on the Isle." The two nodded in unison. The manager nodded back, "Since I sent Gar ahead with the others to the Isle, to get things straight at the guild house in Talahya, I will need you both to assist Rhuw with the afternoon training sessions of Sorcery Covenant till you leave. The boys are rusty and need a week of hard work to get back into fighting shape." "You can count on us boss," grinned Bael. "So you have decided on Rhuw as the weaponsmaster here in Osksi, sir, " asked Specter. "Actually I have decided on having two weaponsmasters, Rhuw will help them with their offensive training and Giz will be returning from the Isle in a week to handle defensive training." responded the Visionist. "Tween will be staying as well to be their assistant." "Where are Rhuw and Tween anyway?" queried Bael. "They are out back working on the training area, now get going to the tailor before he closes shop for the day." Specter nodded and Bael grinned and gave him a thumbs up and they headed up the stairs. For the next week everyone settled back into the old routine. Afternoon training was hell for the five members of Sorcery Covenant. Four Lord Protectors watching every move they made and correcting every little mistake in form. Each day though, you could see the rust coming off the experienced four, but Cirrus was still new to the gladiator stuff and was having a much more difficult time. His being a little slow didn't help matters either. Githzerai returned with a report from the Isle. The news wasn't good, Gargantua, Elendur and Genevieve all had lost their returning matches in Talahya and Massaum, Dr. Strangelove and Arantar all lost in Primus as well. Sitting at his desk reading the reports, the Visionist wondered if maybe if the time away had hurt his Lord Protectors more than they would be able to recover from. More or less eight years was a long time to not be in the arena and how would it affect the young fighters here in Osksi. He was worried he was pushing things into action to quickly. Down the stairs came Specter and Bael. "Have a seat." "What's up boss?" asked Bael. "Now that Giz is here I want you to get on your way to the Isle," answered the manager solemnly. "But sir, we were hoping to stay for the fights tomorrow and see how the boys do," stated Specter. "Yeah boss, the boys have bust their butts this past week, we want to be there to congratulate them after all their hard work," interjected Bael. "I appreciate...." "Sir, Giz told us about the reports from the Isle. The boys have heard about it too I am sure. I think we need to be here for these boys more than be at the Isle a couple days early sitting on our hands before we return to the arena," interrupted Specter. Bael quickly added, "Yeah boss, it will make a huge difference, I would bet on it." The manager looked over the two for a moment rubbing his chin, "OK, but you need to leave first light day after tomorrow. The two grinned and replied, " Yes sir!" The arena looked nearly empty compared to what he remembered from the past. The lists only showed thirteen matches for the day. He saw his old friend Buri of the guild Aesir and walked over and shook his hand. They talked for a moment about how things had changed, then wished each other luck and promised to get together over an ale sometime and talk about the old times. It was good to see a familiar face again. Finding a seat in the managers section, the five Lord Protectors from Sorcery Covenant joined him. The first match was Cirrus, the youngest member of the guild. The match started out slow and stayed that way. He didn't look very comfortable, in fact, he looked scared half to death, but somehow he won. Uldi, Elwerth and Notthur all followed with easy wins. Last was Wirlitz. If my calculations were correct I thought if he survived he would get his invite to the Isle. I didn't tell him or any of the others this because I didn't want to make him any more nervous. After his quick win, he became Duelmaster for the third time. As we were leaving the arena, everyone in the guild was congratulating the winners, especially Wirlitz. From around a corner a scribe appeared from the commission. He walked up, handed me a scroll. Everyone looked at me in wonder. I slowly unrolled the scroll to confirm my suspicions and I smiled. I handed the scroll to Wirlitz and winked at Specter and Bael. They then knew what it was. Before he could completely unroll it, they lifted Wirlitz onto their shoulders and carried him to the Inn, where we all toasted the newest Lord Protector from Osksi. SPY REPORT I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit the road, Debby Tonte. OSKSI needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Too bad, GAMES LIBRARY, but SORCERY COVENANT was just too good to be stopped. MVP award for ETERNAL D.J.? FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT's proud of him after beating MUMBLEDY PEG and getting 23 points. Talk about yer big time losers! MUMBLEDY PEG got smashed by ETERNAL D.J., and lost 13 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think WIRLITZ should let KHALHUMS DWARF be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me! So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of SORCERY COVENANT must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? I don't know what JGW BIOWARFARE's been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from SORCERY COVENANT, that's fer sher. Like, is YATZEE popular, or what? It was challenged the most in all of OSKSI! It's got a 2-2-0, is that good? Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All OSKSI ever talks about is fighting! Me, I'm more laid back. Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.) Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand wash. I gotta leave. OSKSI is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out!
