A Day in the Life Hearing the muffled applause and jeers from the crowd in the arena, Notthur nervously adjusted the straps on his leather armor. Looking across at his friend Wirlitz, he saw him sitting on the bench, his eyes closed in meditation. You could see him going through his upcoming farewell fight in his mind, second by second, feint, attack, dodge, riposte, attack. Notthur thought about how good a friend Wirlitz had become since they both joined the Sorcery Covenant guild. Now he was moving on to the Isle without him. A hand firmly gripped his shoulder. Looking back Notthur saw his guild mate Elwerth. "Good luck, brother. It's between you and me for Duelmaster." "Looks that way, unless we both lose then it will be Uldi or vacant," stated Notthur solemnly. "Good luck to you as well," he added as Elwerth headed toward the arena entrance. Wirlitz approached him, having finished his pre-fight ritual. He asked, "You look a little nervous?" "Yeah a bit," replied Notthur. "Ohhhh, you got it made. You have beaten this guy before remember," interjected Wirlitz. "Yeah, I know, but those martial arts guys are quick and crafty fighters," answered Notthur. In the background you could hear the next match being announced to the crowd. Offering his hand, Wirlitz pulled his friend up off the bench and together they headed toward the arena entrance to watch Elwerth's match. On their way they passed Uldi, a wry smile on his face having just beaten Hearts easily. Reaching the edge of the arena, Elwerth's match was just starting. In a sudden rush Elwerth let loose a series of incredible attacks, each striking home to the intended target. His opponent looked desperate, not knowing what hit him. Several more well timed attacks followed, all making contact. Elwerth stopped for a moment to catch his breath and the Dwarf suddenly slammed his shield into him, then quickly spun into an amazing attack with his morning star and hit Elwerth in the ribs. Wirlitz cringed, "Ouch!" Notthur nodded to his friend, "Yeah that one hurt just watching". Elwerth moved away in pain then jumped back into an attack, but it was easily parried. Attacking simultaneously, their weapons clashed between them, then Elwerth spun and hit the Dwarf in the groin. Slowly the Dwarf backed off, sorely wounded, but Elwerth stumbled. Having used his last reserves of energy to make that attack, he fell to the arena floor and realized he couldn't continue. Looking up in anger, he watched the Dwarf painfully raise his weapon in victory. Elwerth slowly walked passed us in obvious pain from his bruised ribs and ego, "It's all yours, Brother. Go get it." Wirlitz patted his friend on the back as the announcement was made for Notthur's match. He nodded to his friend and slowly walked out into the arena and nodded to the Arenamaster. His opponent trotted out and bowed to the Arenamaster and Notthur. He then went through several ritual stances, did a few spinning kicks and punches. Stopping, he hopped around like a bunny on speed. Notthur watched nervously, getting annoyed by the antics. The Arenamaster motioned for the fight to commence. The two advanced towards each other and Notthur quickly slashed the master across the chest, then dove forward, connecting with his knee. The Master was desperately looking for the exit. Another shot to the leg, then one to the shoulder and another to the knee and it was over. Notthur stood over his fallen opponent and kicked some sand in his direction. The Arenamaster stepped forward and stopped him. Notthur turned to the chanting crowd, raised his weapon triumphantly and bowed. Wirlitz congratulated him as he slowly walked from the arena. Later at the Inn, everyone was toasting Osksi's new Duelmaster. As everyone was laughing and celebrating the manager of Sorcery Covenant noticed a commission scribe in the doorway. He walked to the bar and spoke to the bartender, who pointed toward their table. Slowly he walked over. "Excuse me, sir, may I have a moment in private please?" Everyone quieted down as they watched the two walk to the door and step outside. "Sir, I apologize for the delay," nervously stated the scribe. Looking confused, the Visionist questioned, "Delay in what, might I ask?" "I missed catching you at the arena, then I tried your guild house. The man there suggested I try here," replied the Scribe. Still confused he asked, "OK you have found me. For what reason, might I ask again, are you hunting me so persistently?" "This, sir," stated the scribe as he handed him a scroll. Furrowing his brow, he looked at the scribe then the scroll and slowly reached out to take it from the scribe. Unrolling it he became even more confused, but happily so. "I again apologize for the delay, sir," repeated the scribe. "No need, young man, it's good news that you are bringing me after all," smiled back the manager. "Would you like to join us for an ale?" grinned the Visionist. "Ohh no sir, I am still on official business," stated the scribe. "Very well then, perhaps some other time," nodded the manager. The scribe nodded and quickly took his leave. Rubbing his chin, Visionist wondered how he miscalculated, then shrugged to himself. Returning to the Inn, the boys watched him walk back over and retake his seat at the end of the table. "Sir, everything OK?" questioned Wirlitz. "Oh yes, no problems," answered the manager. Grabbing his ale, he stood and raised it. "A few toasts." "To another fine showing on the sands this week." Everyone replied, "Hear, hear." "To Wirlitz on his final match in Osksi and leaving us for the Isle, he will be missed." Everyone replied, "Hear, hear." "To Notthur, Osksi's new Duelmaster." Everyone replied, "Hear, hear." "To our newest Lord Protector from Sorcery Covenant...Notthur!" Everyone replied, "Hear, huhhh!!" The manager burst out laughing and took a sip from his mug. "Hear, hear." Everyone cheered and drank to Notthur, who spilled his ale and fell down into his seat in shock. SPY REPORT Welcome OSKSI. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! JGW BIOWARFARE is now ranked 5th with a 1-1-0 turn. What's with HODUR? He actually beat FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT's ETERNAL D.J., and walked away with 19 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at AESIR while they watched HODUR clobber ETERNAL D.J.. He lost 17 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. ALFJAR was reminded on the sands why NOTTHUR is Duelmaster. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The most avoided team was AESIR. In my day, no team with a 640-629-44 would scare me off! What's the problem, JGW BIOWARFARE? What do people see in MITOCHONDRIAC? His 2-1-0? JGW BIOWARFARE ain't talkin', but he's got 34 points. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that MITOCHONDRIAC gets in. He fights people like CIRRUS, 8 points below. I thought MITOCHONDRIAC showed great skill and promise when he overcame CIRRUS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note! Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it before you read it. Oh, well. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -DAT NGUYEN 6216 19 22 0 97 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) ELWERTH 4127 18 17 1 97 SORCERY COVENANT (52) ULDI SHOON 4951 10 4 0 97 SORCERY COVENANT (52) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -BLACK WIDOW 3662 8 2 0 88 MISTRESS 4 XMAS (304) ALFJAR 6512 9 7 0 71 AESIR (164) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME HEARTS 6485 13 19 1 66 GAMES LIBRARY (340) HEMOGLOBIN 6158 9 2 0 60 OUR HIGHEST HONOR (563) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME OTIS 6501 6 2 1 53 FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT (253) HODUR 6530 7 3 0 52 AESIR (164) HAPPY APPLE 6492 4 4 1 52 FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT (253) URU 6538 6 2 1 49 AESIR (164) MUMBLEDY PEG 6510 10 11 0 47 GAMES LIBRARY (340) -DIANE MACK 6435 5 5 0 42 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) -JEFF DUNKLE 6391 6 9 0 34 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) MITOCHONDRIAC 4971 2 1 0 34 JGW BIOWARFARE (438) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ETERNAL D.J. 5931 6 5 0 31 FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT (253) FLAGPOLE PANTIES 5968 3 2 0 31 FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT (253) SOLDIER #1 6521 3 1 0 27 OUR HIGHEST HONOR (563) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SOLDIER #3 6535 2 0 0 23 OUR HIGHEST HONOR (563) CIRRUS 6029 3 1 0 20 SORCERY COVENANT (52) YATZEE 6568 3 2 0 16 GAMES LIBRARY (340) OTIS 6589 1 0 0 14 FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT (253) -RAY MORAN 6436 1 9 0 13 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) -MISCHA 6560 3 1 0 10 MISTRESS 4 XMAS (304) KLOABR 6586 1 0 0 10 SORCERY COVENANT (52) SHARAN KHOR 6561 2 3 0 9 GAMES LIBRARY (340) DOMINO JOE 6562 2 3 0 9 GAMES LIBRARY (340) -ISABELLA 6556 1 1 0 7 MISTRESS 4 XMAS (304) -REIKO 6553 1 1 0 4 MISTRESS 4 XMAS (304) SOLDIER #4 6536 0 2 0 2 OUR HIGHEST HONOR (563) PROTOPLASMIC 6588 0 1 0 1 JGW BIOWARFARE (438) SOLDIER #2 6590 0 1 0 1 OUR HIGHEST HONOR (563) -BLACK MAGIC 5210 0 1 0 1 BLACK ATTACK (453) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
