The Osksi Academy's Laboratory of the Great Arts was shrouded in rain, but even
that heavy fall couldn't hide the faint purple glow slipping through the cracks
between the heavy stones. Thunder grumbled constantly.
"Shouldn't there be lightning?" Lord Protector Dewey asked.
"I'd have thought so," Lord Protector Zin agreed. "I suppose it means that
something's going wrong. Figures. I told them this wouldn't be so easy."
"Nobody listens," Dewey agreed. "Still, easy or hard, we said we'd do it,
so...."
"Yeah." Zin checked that his sword was riding light in its sheath, ready to
draw at need, took a deep breath and let it out again, then stepped out from the
shelter of the hedge. He couldn't have walked more carefully if he'd expected the
ground to explode under his feet.
Dewey matched him, pace by careful pace. "We should have let Sharan Khor come
with us," he murmured.
"Gods, no! She's too involved."
"Maybe, but at least she'd know the key when she saw it."
"We've got a description."
"Never trust 'em, myself."
"You agreed to help out with this."
"I figured there should be somebody level-headed along," Dewey said.
"I'm--!"
"No, you are not level-headed. Not really crazy, but, Zin, you're the basic,
natural hero. Really great to have on one's side, often very sensible--up to a
point. And then you'll do something totally off the wall because it 'seems like a
good idea at the time'. I grant you, this often works better than anyone has a right
to expect. But sometimes it fails, and then it's a truly spectacular disaster.
Somebody has to come along to keep an eye the other stuff. In this case, me. You do
the hero stuff, I cover your back."
Zin considered arguing the point, there was a lot he wanted to say against
Dewey's position, but they were too close to the Laboratory. There was a job to be
done.
From the mental journal (you don't think I'm going to write this stuff down for some
tick to stumble across and snicker over, do you?) of Medan Dashell VI (Dash to my
friends):
Even the best tavern has to close sometimes, which is a shame. The least they
could do is wait for daylight, at least, that's what I think. Where do they expect
anyone to go at two in the morning when it's raining waves and fishes? Of course,
the Three-legged Pig isn't the best tavern. The party was just so-so, about what
you'd expect of Teddy Vansek. Oceans of food, mountains of drink, and he thinks that
makes a party! No imagination, that's Teddy's problem. One of Teddy's problems.
Everyone else is sloping off in different directions, headed, no doubt, for someplace
warm and dry, preferably without Teddy Vansek in it. Not a bad thought. But if I
was to go home, it would be just my luck to the Pater awake and not amused to see his
son and heir arriving soaking wet and half blotto.
Note to myself: Bad champagne is worse than no champagne. Much worse.
Hmm. Better to start walking, I suppose. Teddy hasn't come out yet, and I
would prefer not to be standing around here when he does. The blister would latch
onto me like a, like a latch, that's what, and I'd be stuck with him till morning.
Better wet than that. Oh, damn, there he IS. I'll have to go the long way around if
I want to get home without passing him. Up by the Academy, and the rain's bound to
be worse there. More exposed. If I get struck by lightning, it will be Teddy
Vansek's fault. I'd like to write that somewhere, just in case, but in this rain?
Forget it, Dash.

SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon OSKSI, for I,
Novgorodny Vir, have returned! The boys at OUR HIGHEST HONOR left the arena
dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT. Good show!
FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT had cause to celebrate, after BIG BROTHER got 18 points by beating
VETERAN MERCENARY. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice
more, after losing 6 points to SOLDIER #4. (Discrete enough, IRON MAIDEN?) Those who
hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by DOMINO JOE, of GAMES LIBRARY, who
despite a 17-19-1 couldn't overcome OSKSI's Number 1. So who was the warrior seen
charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic
problem...
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! If challenges were horses, LORINS PELN
could open up a fast food joint!
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Never one to advocate
diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see FRAT PARTY BLOWOUT retaliate against
GAMES LIBRARY in bloodfeud! Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. My fingers tire and I fear my incessant
prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. OSKSI, I leave
you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Elefont. 'Til next time--
