                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

                                    Homecoming

A thickly muscled man of medium height stood on a raised, semi-circular dias
towering in the center of a tall, narrow room. His square face moved lanquidly,
turning toward one wall, then another. His stance was wide but relaxed; a well-
conditioned athlete poised to move in any direction, at any time. Amber eyes darted
back and forth quickly. Cords like taut cables plunged down either side of his wide
neck, almost pulsing as he breathed. Lines of muscle flowed hypnotically up and down
his forearms as they crossed and pressed hard against his bulky chest.
All five walls around him danced with light. Strange symbols, in various
glowing colors, streamed down from the ceiling to the floor of one wall. Pictures
and short movie clips (depicting various gladiators and their battles) simultaneously
swam in and out of focus, overlapping and replacing each other on three other walls
while a dull, muted voice whispered gibberish into the cold, dry, sanitized air.
On the fifth wall a planet, mottled with blues, greens, and browns, spun
serenely against a black, glittery background. Small symbols, attached to lines and
arrows, flickered and faded across the face of the planet at random intervals. When
the man's eyes touched those symbols, he frowned distastefully. A bright orange oval
of radiant luminescance suddenly appeared next to him. He ignored it as it grew and
died and solidified into a slender youth wearing a shiny toga and a brittle, narrow
smile.
"Well Havoc," chimed the youth, "what are you doing? Pouting? Aren't you happy
to be back?"
The man elaborately turned on his heel and glared at the youth. "After all
these years, why bother?" he growled hoarsely. "The Astral Kin have always been an
obsession with you, Kid, but let's face it--their best days are long behind them."
"Now now," smiled the Arcane Kid. He raised a pale and meticulously manicured
hand in mock protest. "Helias Sol did well, didn't he? Doesn't it feel good to have
a Duelmaster in our stable?"
"I'll let you know in a couple of weeks," snorted Havoc.
"Oh, cheer up, will you?! How are those new growth and regeneration chambers
coming along? They'll make a difference in the new recruits we'll be seeing. You
can count on it!"
Havoc returned a sour grimace and spun suddenly, but smoothly, to face a wall
where a young lunger staggered piteously past a grinning opponent who was readying
his weapon for a terrific blow.
"Reality check on aisle five," muttered Havoc. He sneered at the Kid over his
shoulder. "These guys seriously suck rocks. We couldn't dominate a lemonade stand
with these losers, much less an arena like Osksi!"
"Well..." the Arcane Kid waved his arm dismissively in Havoc's general direction
and started to glow. His features melted into an orange fuzz before disappearing
into nothingness. A faint odor of ozone tainted the parched air.
"Yeah," sighed Havoc heavily, cupping his hands over his eyes. "Dark Arena,
here we come!"

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Interesting place you have here. Many new faces, though not a whole lot of
them. A few familiar ones. Dat Nguyen! Didn't I used to pound on you 7 or 8 years
ago? Hhhmmm. Hopefully Astral Kin can bring some significant battles for you all to
enjoy!

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, OSKSI? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-1-0 is nice, but
don't get cocky, DREAMS OF KADATH, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud.
Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see VIRTUAL REALITY win a fight and gain
14 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FURIOUS GORGE beat VECTOR UNSTABLE and VECTOR
UNSTABLE lost 9 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of
life, OSKSI may be getting bland, as HELIAS SOL stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks
and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their
fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's
the big D? GENERATION X was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like DREAMS OF KADATH avoided them the
most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm
frightfully impressed, SALDORINIVAN KIRO was this turn's most challenged warrior.
Watch that ego swell, sports fans.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. STATE OF MIND has cause to pause today, as
FUNNY FARM FIEND was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of
moods, I'll wager. It's about time RIGATONI got beat for picking on warriors like
THE VOICE INSIDE. Bravo, STATE OF MIND. See you at The Elefont. We're all going to
die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of OSKSI. I feel much better now. Glad to see the back of
this place-- Snide Clemens

Stormy -- You just knew he was going to do that in the personals. -- Reaper
P.S. We are going to have to grease the sides of his head to get him into the arena
now...

All -- Sorry for missing a turn there. Things have been kind of crazy. -- Reaper

Marma -- But PSIONIC PSYCHO was only 7 wins to 500 how could you let him go like
that... -- Reaper

TV Dinner -- Here is the deal... Crushing down challenges are a great thing, the only
thing is... you have to win... a key point often misunderstood. -- Reaper

Elvorn Marslan -- That\'s exactly the correct way for you to go to AD--limping. --
Helias Sol

Perfect Drug -- No kidding! Steroid abuse!! Steroid Abuse!! It'll catch up with
you eventually, you know. -- Vector Unstable

Virtual Reality -- The sun was in my eyes! And I saw stars, too... -- Splintered Sky

Cadillac Dundee -- What a ridiculous ending!! Just when I had you in the palm of my
hand! Who would...would have believed...(snore...snore...) -- Star Shard, still
recovering from the effects of his long sleep in the suspension chamber

The Voice Inside -- Ha ha! I bet you heard bells ringing too, didn't you? --
Vagabond Dream

Kovaramann Voth -- And I thought you would help me regain my confidence! Oh well,
you could have at least taught me something. -- TV Dinner

Stoned Immaculate -- Wow! Can you believe that was the first time that I used that
weapon! I think it might be a keeper... or were you just too busy having the
munchies to protect yourself properly? ;) -- Mailer Daemon

Ghost of Manicotti -- Didn't know I would actually live up to my name. Well I hope
you liked my singing better, at least. -- Kareoke Killer

Skaevolovian Kor -- I am starting to feel dangerous! BTW, is that name Swedish? I
knew a girl once... -- Instant Access

TV Dinner -- I look at your five kills and I realize how right people are to recoil
in horror and loathing from your approach. This is not the record of a healthful
meal. -- Kovaramann Voth

Instant Access -- But what if I don't want instant? What if I want to take my time,
savor the approach, enjoy a little anticipation? -- Skaevolovian Kor
P.S. What is meant by "generation x," anyway? I don't seem to have run across that
term.

Helias Sol -- Wouldn't you know it, I meet a beautiful woman who knocks me for nine
loops just as I'm about to leave. Maybe I'll stay? All it would need is a little
encouragement from you. -- Elvorn Marslan
P.S. That was well done--the fight. Always take the title on a win if there's any
way you can do that.

Taldo Belansamo, Master of Mercenaries -- You need to get us a newer Veteran
Mercenary. This one's shopworn, tired, not up to the job. -- Tarobinz Maur

Veteran Mercenaries who can still stand and fight are thing on the ground.

Sellorow, Registrar of Beggars -- Can you get us a new Persistent Beggar, too? I
don't think this one knows much. -- Saldorinivan Kiro
P.S. After all, even the blind clerks at the Commission recognized my great courage,
and then... a Beggar?

     Sue us.
