                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

                                  Special Training

Havoc stood in the center of a small, square-shaped cobble-stoned plaza, between
a covered well and a pile of broken and rotting lumber. He was a thickly muscled man
of medium height. He wasn't happy. His arms were crossed; his stance was wide; his
gaze was fierce. His close-cropped hair stood up in a sharp, bristle-brush sort of
manner. His glowing amber eyes missed nothing.
Around the plaza, forming a hollow square, were four narrow rectangular
buildings. They had been abandoned for some time, it seemed. Their roofs were
tilted and broken; narrow beams of sunlight lanced through them and illuminated their
musty interiors. The buildings had once been painted a bright blue with a white
trim. The paint was badly faded and barely visible. It was also streaked with dirt,
scrapes, and cuts, and profusely covered with riotous scrawls of obscene and semi-
literate phrases.
Five warriors were engaged in dragging furniture and unfit timber from the
buildings. About three other men, hired labor, were industriously stacking the
debris in neat piles. There were another four men hammering away inside the West
wing.
A wide, splintered board toppled suddenly from the nearest pile of lumber and
clattered at Havoc's feet. A slanted, narrow message had been carved drunkenly into
the wood: "The Balrogs were here!" Havoc kicked the board away and spat after it. A
high-pitched thrumming in the brisk, wintery air set his teeth on edge. He turned
and watched the inevitable glowing appearance of the Arcane Kid as he materialized
out of a lime-green haze. Havoc spat again, but this time in the Kid's general
direction. Arcane ignored this; he glided smoothly forward and stood next to Havoc,
shading his blue eyes with one hand and rearranging his cloak with the other.
"Bracing weather to work in, isn't it?" asked the Kid politely.
"Shove off!" growled Havoc. "Can't you see we're busy here?!"
"Of course I see you're busy," replied Arcane as he slowly spun in a circle. "I
thought you might need some adult supervision."
     "Hhhmmmph!!"
"The town of Osksi doesn't seem to be too interested in maintaining its arena's
teams' facilities, does it?"
"We've been gone a long time, Kid," growled Havoc. "It looks like a lotta teams
have pulled up stakes. We're lucky there are any decent 'facilities' left for us to
occupy."
"You call this decent?" sniffed Arcane. "Still, it's good to be back in our old
barracks, isn't it? A few boards here and there, a little paint, and we're back in
business!"
"Oh really?" sneered Havoc as he turned to face the Kid. "What about those so-
called 'improvements' to the growth and regeneration chambers?!"
"I worked on those components myself," replied Arcane stiffly. "They're as good
as new."
"Yeah? Well, don't break your arm patting yourself on the back! Have you met
our new recruit? Starless?"
The Kid merely smiled and shrugged and pulled his heavy long cloak tighter
around himself.
"You know that genetic manipulation is a tricky business," Arcane said softly.
"Burn up the new recruits in the Intiates level; there's bound to be other weaklings
we can exploit in that stratum."
     "So you say!"
"Until we get someone decent on our roster," replied the Kid with a forced even
tone, "we'll just have to make do with what we've got."
Arcane sighed deeply as three warriors came suddenly into view, dragging a
large, heavy roll of rotted carpet from the Southern wing. The men grunted and swung
in unison, then sent the roll flying against a tall pile of broken boards. Clapping
each other on the back and laughing, they turned and went back into the building.
"Have you talked to Vagabond or Vector yet?"
"Yeah, yeah," muttered Havoc softly. "They're going to some 'special training'
for 'skills enhancement'."
"They bought that?!" The Kid screeched. "Who goes to 'special training' at
night?!"
"Shut your pie-hole!!" thundered Havoc. He dropped his voice into a gravelly
whisper. "You should know already, Kid, that these guys aren't exactly the sharpest
spears in the armory."
"True, true," sighed Arcane. "True enough. Very well. Have you talked with
High Elf and Stone Golem? If memory serves, they were once open to bribes..."
Havoc frowned and shook his head.
"I haven't gotten around to it. Everything's changed in Osksi, Kid. A lotta my
old contacts are gone; they just left!!"
"Yes, yes. I understand." The Arcane Kid looked up at the leaden sky and
shivered slightly. "Well, I'll leave you to your tasks, and return to mine. Perhaps
I can tweak the chromosonal codification tables to our favor...." The Kid's voice
died out as he flared into a blinding oval of lime-green light, then disappeared.
"I need a drink," muttered Havoc to himself. "Man! 'Special NIGHT-TIME
training', huh?! Yeah, right!!"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

I've come to the (obvious?) conclusion that this place is a breeding ground for
tournament hopefuls. Lots of unusually gifted fighters here; the percentage of
warriors with a 70% (or better) winning record is awfully high. The average wit on
the Astral Kin's roster is under 15... obviously, we must be more stringent in our
future recruitment requirements. And yet, I just finally earned my first (and
probably only) Master's rating. Does experience count so highly?? It seems to have
been a helpful factor for me!! I'd like to hear your thoughts on this, future
Duelmasters. (I realize this ride can't last much longer.) Pass me the ale!

                                      SPY REPORT

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to OSKSI once again! What's with CTHYLLA? She actually beat STATE
OF MIND's FUNNY FARM FIEND, and walked away with 18 more points from the fight.
Major screwup at STATE OF MIND. FUNNY FARM FIEND lost 15 points to CTHYLLA. Some
new strategies, perhaps? Maybe FUNNY FARM FIEND will provide more easy wins... Try
as he might, KOVARAMANN VOTH wasn't good enough at persuading HELIAS SOL to step down
from the Duelmaster's throne... Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was GENERATION X. In my day, no team with a 110-115-14 would scare
me off! What's the problem, DREAMS OF KADATH? What do people see in VECTOR
UNSTABLE? His 8-4-1? ASTRAL KIN ain't talkin', but he's got 61 points. VIRTUAL
REALITY of STATE OF MIND knows how to pick 'em. He challenged TAROBINZ MAUR of GAMES
LIBRARY who is up by 24. Now was this a wise move? VIRTUAL REALITY perhaps got his
just desserts, seeing as he beat TAROBINZ MAUR and ended up with 102 recognition
points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Who will dare fight VECTOR UNSTABLE, after he
returned from the Dark Arena? (For the record 8-4-1 is 61, and has he points) How
long have I been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
OSKSI is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. Remember--a
good fighter needs both good skills and good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

TV Dinner -- I am not sure if you heard me last time... "You have to win... a key
point often misunderstood." -- Reaper
P.S. The personals are going to be really bad this time...

This arena is just too much fun... -- Reaper

Shub Nigguarth -- I really didn't expect anyone to challenge me so soon!! I'll have
to figure out how to deal with that. -- Splintered Sky

Kovaramann Voth -- Wow! Thanks for the skills! You guys at Games Library are
great!! -- Helias Sol

Furious Gorge -- I don't understand how that happened. I leaned left... and then you
leaned right... well, the boss has some "special training" cooked up. I'll be ready
to defeat you next time! -- Vector Unstable

Cadillac Dundee -- Well, it's good to know I can last so long, I guess... I have to
go to the "special training" too. I'm hoping to increase my attack. Watch out,
C.D.!! I'll be back! -- Vagabond Dream

Taint of the Sea -- Not bad. But give me a few turns, and then I want a rematch! At
least we both got good skills out of it. -- Kareoke Killer

Virtual Reality -- Don't get too cocky! You'll be brought down to earth soon. What
goes around comes around! -- TV Dinner

At least, it does when you have a turntable in the microwave.

Convicted Thief -- Thanks for the sparring session. It was a little quick, though.
I barely broke a sweat! -- Instant Access

Skaevolovian Kor -- Not a bad debut if I do say so myself. I might have to write a
haiku about it. :) But I thought you would be a better teacher than that! I guess
you can't have everything. -- Coffee House Poet

Osksi -- Just wanted to say good luck to everyone who is going to the Face to Face!
I'm sure I'll see Reaper and Marma Duke roaming the sands there (but remember to curb
yourself, Marma)! And hoping to meet and exchange ideas with other managers as well.
Let's do our fair city proud!!! -- Storm Lord

Nug-Soth -- It sounds, I dunno, like asking for some kind of fruit-and-nut smoothie
when your nose is stopped up. -- Saldorinivan Kiro

Helias Sol -- I trust you will ignore the crowd's insults. What do they know,
anyway? You are one of the best students I've had, and that is a thing to be proud
of. -- Kovaramann Voth

M. Chardinee. Oh, well. -- Tarobinz Maur

Coffee House Poet -- Do you wear sandals and love beads? -- Skaevolovian Kor

Arcane Kid -- Enjoyed the spotlight. Do it again! -- Jorja

TV Dinner -- How about if I teach you to grill steaks and bake potatoes? --
Kovaramann Voth

Instant Access -- No, it's Karian, although Jorja hasn't bothered to get our races
corrected. Not that anybody around here would reocgnize an Ondarik and realize the
honor we're doing 'em by coming here, but life is like that. -- Skaevolvian Kor

High Elf -- Well, that sure was a surprise... I think you've convinced Marms to keep
me around a while! -- Funny Farm Fiend

Rigatoni -- Revenge was necessary, revenge was taken. -- The Voice Inside

TV Dinner -- A meal so nice, I wanted it twice. -- Virtual Reality

Cthylla -- Out here in the perimeter there are no stars.... out here we is.... --
Stoned Immaculate

Zombie Bait -- Well done.... well done. -- Eyes of Disarray

All -- Can't wait for the F2F in Tempe... really looking forward to it!!! -- Marms

Enjoy it doubly for those who can't make it.
