A meter below, and roughly 5 meters away, two fighters, a golem and a Kannar, grunted and shuffled in ankle-deep sand. Their padded leather was generally stained with sweat and the occasional ominous streak of dried blood. Their faces wore a sheen of tired determination inside their dented helms. Their broadswords, carved from some dark, dense wood, clacked and clashed against each other as the warriors practiced their carefully choreographed "fight." At one point the fighters' swords crossed and grated against each other as the warriors struggled to push each other backward. The golem's wide sandals screwed themselves into the sand to buy it more purchase. The female Kannar grinned briefly. The golem seemed to swell suddenly as it gathered its strength and violently shoved the hilt of its sword against the Kannar's wooden blade. Instantaneously, the female crouched and pivoted on her left leg as her right foot swept an arcing furrow in the sand behind her. Her body twisted lithely to her right, following her leg. Her sword gave way, and in doing so, deflected the golem's forceful shove aside. Her broadsword seemed to fly around her body as she swung it around, generating a mighty centrifugal force, and slashed the back of the golem's right leg, just behind its knee. The golem let out a hoarse screech as it spun, off-balance and in pain, and toppled awkwardly onto the Kannar. A muffled grunt of surprise squelched out from under the golem. "Pathetic," muttered Havoc to himself. "Plasma Girl?!" he called out, "You okay under there?!" The golem waggled its arms and legs and finally gained enough momentum to roll over and off of Plasma Girl. "Thanks," gasped the Kannar. The golem rose unsteadily to its feet and limped slowly toward the water barrel resting against the far side of the pit. "Hey, Fusion, how 'bout a little help here?" Ion Fusion paused and looked back. The golem gave a labored sigh before turning and limping back toward Plasma Girl, her slender arm raised in the air. Fusion grasped her wrist, Plasma grabbed his, and with an abrupt jerk the Kannar was yanked to her feet. She swayed a moment as they released their holds, then she patted Fusion on its wide shoulder and followed it toward the water barrel. "Again!" barked Havoc from his perch. The fighters stopped and looked up over their shoulders. "You're not done yet!" Havoc shouted. "I'll let you know when it's time for your break!" The warriors sighed in unison as they shuffled to face their taskmaster. "C'mon, Boss!" growled the golem. "How 'bout a water break?" "Yeah!" nodded the Plasma Girl. "We've been practicing this stupid kata for over an hour...." The "ping" of the lead pellet striking the sloping top of her helm coincided with the sudden shudder of the small Kannar's frame. She crumpled back onto the sand and tried to remember... something... anything. As Plasma Girl gaped and gasped hollowly, the startled golem wheeled clumsily and raised his wooden broadsword into an awkward parry form. Havoc stared boldly into the golem's deep-set eyes, glittering brightly inside the shell of his upturned helm. "So far," Havoc snarled, "you two haven't impressed me! You think-- aaawww, NO!!" An unanticipated whine pierced the air as a brilliant yellow flame shook beside Havoc, who took a quick step back. After a few seconds Havoc could hear Fusion panting again. A slim youth, wearing crimson pantaloons and a black tunic of some heavy material, took an arrogant pose, his arms akimbo, his head tilted toward Havoc. A look of distaste marred his delicate features. "I need to talk with you," declared the Arcane Kid imperiously. Havoc gritted his teeth and snorted explosively. Without taking his eyes off the Kid, Havoc's arm snapped out and a round lead pellet blurred into Fusion's forearm. The golem grunted and dropped his broadsword. "Pick up your weapon and that OTHER worthless idiot," Havoc bellowed, "and get back to the barracks!" Arcane and Havoc watched from the lip of the retaining wall as Ion Fusion slowly hauled its drooling companion up and over its shoulder. Holding Plasma Girl in place with one arm, Fusion gathered up their weapons with the other and headed toward the flagstone steps leading out. "Kid, don't try to tell me how to run a stable," growled Havoc menacingly as he crossed his thick arms across his broad chest. "What?" The Kid pursed his thin lips and squinted. "Oh, pullleeease!" He smirked and waved disdainfully in the general direction of the departing gladiators. "Your problems are YOUR problems," Arcane scoffed. "Really?" sneered Havoc. "I haven't seen you in over a week. Did you come to inspect the barracks, then? I told you I'd get it cleaned up, didn't I??!!" "Hhhmmph. No, I'm not here for that either. But I guess, as long as I'm here, I should make an inspection." "Kid!" exclaimed Havoc. "What do you want?!" "I wanted to let you know the price we're paying for that little jamboree you hosted." "I just SAID I'd clean it." "Not just that!" interrupted Arcane. He pounded his left fist into a manicured hand. "The genetic components for the growth tubes weren't fully recalibrated when you used them! I'm having a terrible time coordinating and adjusting them!" "So what?" Havoc turned his head and ran his eye appraisingly up and down the Kid's agitated frame. "Like you said: Your problems are YOUR problems!" The Kid struggled to calm down. "Havoc, we need a warrior with incredible deftness and near-genius IQ! I don't know when, or if, I'll be able to make that happen!" "We'll manage," shrugged Havoc indifferently. "I believe that there is NO way we can be competitive in this arena without at least one Aimed Blow, and thanks to you--" "I doubt that," sniffed Havoc. "We've never had an A.B. that I can remember." He shook his head slowly. "But I know you, Kid. Something else has tied a knot in your panties. What is it?" "We NEED an Aimed Blow warrior," Arcane insisted. "From what I've been reading in the managers' roundtable forums there's some sort of glitch in the system that favors that style above all others!" "What glitch? What system?!" "I don't know--yet." Arcane waved dismissively. "I suspect it has something to do with the arena rules, or the local 'magical properties' of the various fighting styles, or some such nonsense. Does it matter?" "Why don't you climb off of your high horse and just ask one of the other managers?" Havoc frowned. "Those hoity toities used to hang out at the Elephont. I guess they still do, don't they?" "Well... that's sort of the other problem." The Kid looked down at his reflection in his highly polished boots. "I, uh, well--I can't seem to acquire the credentials necessary to be allowed access to the forums...." "You WHAT?!" Havoc leaned forward, his face a gleaming beacon of joy. "They won't let you into their little club??!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!" "SILENCE!!" shouted the Arcane Kid. Havoc continued to laugh. He was forced to sit down; his heels drummed against the retaining wall as he roared and hooted and giggled uncontrollably. "Havoc, this is important," said the Kid solemnly. "I have sent letters to the arena officials, but apparently they don't read their mail-- HAVOC!" Arcane grimaced and shook his head while Havoc rocked his body on the ground and gasped and guffawed intermittently. "YOU meddled with the Outworlder's growth and regeneration chambers, YOU made it almost impossible to align the chromosomal patterns favorably-- and with so few fighters in Osksi, the tourney-bred scoundrels are hurting our chances at glory! AAARRRGGGHHH. "You're not listening, I see. Very well." A few seconds of shrill whistling, a brilliant flame of yellow, and Havoc lay on his side alone, wiping the tears from his eyes as he chuckled to himself. "Won't let him into their club," he chortled. "Like that's a real problem.... HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 642): BALL PEIN of MANNEQUIN'S BEST (Mannequin, mgr.) Only one skill for me, but I suppose I can't insist on everything. Although... I seem to recall one of these "self-actualization" gurus saying that we *should* insist on everything we want. Seems like it might be just a tad greedy. However, in a true spirit of sharing, I have given to Virtual Reality as good as I got, and maybe a little more. Until next time, Kovaramann Voth SPY REPORT It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty, and despair! Practice pays for TV DINNER, who pummelled ZITI, to pocket 19 points. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 7 points to PLASMA GIRL. (Discrete enough, STONED IMMACULATE?) You could cut the tension with a scimitar as VIRTUAL REALITY of STATE OF MIND met the Duelmaster. What can be a greater victory? VIRTUAL REALITY has taken his place as the top, as OSKSI's new Duelmaster. Word has it one team in OSKSI is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works. So much to report, so little time! Perhaps the warriors of DREAMS OF KADATH should take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... The warriors of DREAMS OF KADATH found their efforts at combat frustrated as STATE OF MIND apparently had more important things to do than fight. Is it charming personality? Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, STONED IMMACULATE is the most challenged warrior. Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors. I hear ZITI of PASTA tired of the battles and was thinking of becoming a priest. TV DINNER of GENERATION X saved him the effort of getting references. Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain tavern in OSKSI would I avoid! Do not think spyreporting in OSKSI is the highlight of my life. More important duties call me. Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME VIRTUAL REALITY 6958 8 3 3 110 STATE OF MIND (245) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FARFALE 6871 16 1 0 191 PASTA (616) KOVARAMANN VOTH 6845 26 22 1 101 GAMES LIBRARY (340) -DAT NGUYEN 6216 19 22 0 97 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) TV DINNER 4910 17 20 6 92 GENERATION X (416) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -PERFECT DRUG 6943 8 0 0 88 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) -WHIRLING INSELBERG 6924 6 0 0 86 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) FURIOUS GORGE 6923 10 4 0 83 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CADILLAC DUNDEE 6956 10 1 1 60 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BOB THE INHALER 6928 12 2 1 56 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) VECTOR UNSTABLE 6231 10 5 1 51 ASTRAL KIN (230) -SHUB NIGGUARTH 6952 7 1 1 51 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) THE VOICE INSIDE 6974 4 3 0 48 STATE OF MIND (245) -DIANE MACK 6435 5 5 0 42 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) -JEFF DUNKLE 6391 6 9 0 34 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PLASMA GIRL 6996 2 1 0 33 ASTRAL KIN (230) FUNNY FARM FIEND 6985 2 3 1 31 STATE OF MIND (245) GEMELLI 6926 4 2 0 30 PASTA (616) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SKAEVOLOVIAN KOR 6970 3 5 0 30 GAMES LIBRARY (340) INSTANT ACCESS 6971 5 2 0 26 GENERATION X (416) -CTHYLLA 6953 4 4 0 26 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) KAREOKE KILLER 6972 4 3 1 25 GENERATION X (416) -ZOMBIE BAIT 6964 4 1 0 24 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FALRONDIAL VOTH 6989 3 1 0 23 GAMES LIBRARY (340) MEGA PIXEL 6995 3 0 0 20 GENERATION X (416) STONED IMMACULATE 6975 4 3 0 19 STATE OF MIND (245) -TAINT OF THE SEA 6950 3 5 0 14 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) COFFEE HOUSE POET 6987 2 3 0 14 GENERATION X (416) IZ'CH 7010 1 0 0 13 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) -RAY MORAN 6436 1 9 0 13 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) SALDORINIVAN KIRO 6977 2 4 0 10 GAMES LIBRARY (340) ELBOWS 6979 1 1 0 9 PASTA (616) RIGATONI 6976 1 3 1 7 PASTA (616) MENOLDRIN SKO 7009 1 1 0 7 GAMES LIBRARY (340) ION FUSION 7008 1 1 0 5 ASTRAL KIN (230) HELTER SKELTER 7012 0 1 0 1 STATE OF MIND (245) SUNSPOT 7011 0 1 0 1 ASTRAL KIN (230) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
