The rasp and jingle of weapons mingled with the creak of leather as a few dozen humanoids shifted uncomfortably and tried to avoid each other's eyes. The sound of water dripping from the roof-spouts, the light thrum of an icy drizzle, the occasional hoarse cough or gruff bark blended with their clouds of guarded breathing to form a miserable mix of desperate creatures. The line of rabble snaked through the wide doorway and into the main room and wound along the wall. It curved sharply at the corner and moved toward the center of the room, near the fire pit. The fire pit was well filled; a furious blaze shoved the bitter cold wet air away from the center of the room. Nearby, a makeshift fighting arena, surrounded by ropes of twisted leather and the warriors from Astral Kin, waited ominously while a pair of Kannari workmen industriously scrubbed at a large bloodstain on the roughened tile. The Astral Kin were the only warriors to have their weapons unsheathed and glaring brightly in their hands. The warrior applicants along the walls stared at their haughty disdain with a mixture of envy and loathing. On the other side of the "arena" a massive table had been dragged into position so that Havoc could easily survey the doorway and most of the room. His thick fingers thrummed on the scarred wood of the armrests as he shifted uncomfortably in the well-padded chair. Various weapons, scrolls, and manuscripts were scattered thickly across the face of the table, practically obscuring it. Havoc wore a dark scowl and black chainmail. A broadsword lay across his lap. A sudden movement in the doorway caught his eye. A stout goblin stood arrogantly in the wide doorway, crowding it with his bulk and fierce eye. He wore leather armor, augmented with various bands of interwoven rings of steel, and a high-domed helm engraved with strange angular symbols. The goblin had made a startled movement toward the handle of a heavy battle-axe hung across his broad back. The wide double-bladed face peered across his shoulder as the goblin looked down and sneered through a set of large, pointy teeth. Suddenly, a slim, pale hand came into view. Though the rough-beamed wall hid the body, Havoc noted that the arm was wrapped in blue felt. The nails were manicured and shone brazenly. Havoc's scowl evaporated into a twisted grimace. One of the fingers tapped lightly on the breastplate of the goblin, who frowned and barked an unintelligible reply. The goblin managed to get a firm grip on his battle-axe as the slim hand pressed its palm firmly against his broad chest. A flare of blue-white lightning cascaded around and through the goblin. He made a brief, stiff-legged dance until the lightning disappeared. Through a haze of fuzzy red, Havoc could dimly see the goblin collapse as a man stepped past him. The man wore a light blue robe of some soft and thick material that seemed to shed water easily. Droplets beaded up and dripped to the floor as the man walked calmly toward the table. The Astral Kin warriors dropped their arrogant posing and quickly came to attention, saluting with their weapons as the Arcane Kid strode by, smiling and nodding appreciatively. Havoc noted the still silence of the crowd along the walls and made a gravelly chuckle. "Kid, you sure know how to make an entrance!" Arcane shrugged nonchalantly as Vector Unstable hurriedly dragged a heavy armchair, a twin to Havoc's, towards the table. The Kid waved dismissively. Vector quickly let go of the chair and resumed his place with the rest of the Kin. Arcane easily picked the chair up and arranged it to suit himself. Havoc resumed his scowl. "Well, Havoc?" "Well, what?!" growled Havoc. "You can see what's goin' on, right?!" "Yes, I can. However, you must realize that I'm still waiting for the Commission to give us a list of approved warriors. We can't just create a Shadowspire team willy-nilly." "Yeah? So what?" "Sooo... why are you bothering with these... warriors? They probably won't be on that list." The men paused to watch the Kannari workmen struggle to drag the goblin out the door. Ion Fusion grunted and moved to help. "Listen, Kid, I know what I'm doin', okay? Sure, you're waiting for 'the list' to arrive. We've been waiting for a while now, right? But that list..." (Havoc dropped into a hoarse whisper) " Can always be IMPROVED, you know?" Arcane snorted explosively and waved his hand. "Risky, from a legal standpoint. And how are you going to IMPROVE the list with any of this lot?" Havoc sighed resignedly. "I told you, Kid. I know what I'm doin'. There are allowances made for 'sick substitutions' in the guidelines. Don't worry! I can handle the paperwork," he said hurriedly as the Kid began to raise his hand to make an argument. "As for these guys... well, you never can tell." Havoc raised his voice to a sudden booming yell that filled the expansive room: "Maybe we've got a future Duelmaster here, right?!!" A weak cheer from some of the more optimistic warriors sprinkled across the line of applicants. "Well," laughed the Arcane Kid, "then I'll leave you to your business!" He tilted his head and gave an elaborate wink to Havoc, then rose smoothly and, still chuckling to himself, made his way to the doorway. The men in the doorway and the area nearby dissolved. Havoc allowed a sinister smile to flash across his face, and then quickly resumed his dark look as he turned and signaled the next warrior in line to step into the "arena." "Man, I hope that list is worth the wait!" he muttered to himself as the applicant, tangled in the leather ropes, sprawled into the arena with a heavy CLANG of platemail. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 644): VAN DERMINT of BOOZE (Papa Bear, mgr.) It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly OSKSI games. COSMIC JOKE caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested PERSISTENT BEGGAR and was awarded 16 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, COFFEE HOUSE POET put down PLASMA GIRL, causing her to lose 12 points of recognition in the process. This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail FURIOUS GORGE, Duelmaster of OSKSI! Would you believe that over half of the old women in OSKSI seem to feel that they could fight better than you gladiators? But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city OSKSI. OSKSI, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy guilds is ASTRAL KIN, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels. Apparently the stalwarts of STATE OF MIND are catching the bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after KOVARAMANN VOTH. Watch your back! A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that KAREOKE KILLER posted a challenge against the more highly recognized VECTOR UNSTABLE. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand KAREOKE KILLER was bested by VECTOR UNSTABLE. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more than its fair share of red in recent times. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always! The girls are as pretty in OSKSI as ever I remembered them....and the fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FURIOUS GORGE 6923 12 4 0 110 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -FARFALE 6871 16 1 0 191 PASTA (616) KOVARAMANN VOTH 6845 27 23 1 109 GAMES LIBRARY (340) -DAT NGUYEN 6216 19 22 0 97 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME VIRTUAL REALITY 6958 9 4 3 88 STATE OF MIND (245) -PERFECT DRUG 6943 8 0 0 88 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) -WHIRLING INSELBERG 6924 6 0 0 86 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) TV DINNER 4910 17 22 6 79 GENERATION X (416) CADILLAC DUNDEE 6956 12 1 1 79 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BOB THE INHALER 6928 14 2 1 77 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME THE VOICE INSIDE 6974 6 3 0 60 STATE OF MIND (245) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME VECTOR UNSTABLE 6231 11 6 1 53 ASTRAL KIN (230) -SHUB NIGGUARTH 6952 7 2 1 53 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) FUNNY FARM FIEND 6985 4 3 1 50 STATE OF MIND (245) -DIANE MACK 6435 5 5 0 42 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) -ZOMBIE BAIT 6964 5 1 0 35 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) -JEFF DUNKLE 6391 6 9 0 34 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME KAREOKE KILLER 6972 5 4 1 32 GENERATION X (416) -GEMELLI 6926 4 2 0 30 PASTA (616) INSTANT ACCESS 6971 6 3 0 28 GENERATION X (416) SKAEVOLOVIAN KOR 6970 4 6 0 28 GAMES LIBRARY (340) COFFEE HOUSE POET 6987 3 4 0 27 GENERATION X (416) MENOLDRIN SKO 7009 3 1 0 26 GAMES LIBRARY (340) FALRONDIAL VOTH 6989 4 2 0 25 GAMES LIBRARY (340) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -CTHYLLA 6953 4 5 0 22 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) -MEGA PIXEL 6995 4 0 0 22 GENERATION X (416) SALDORINIVAN KIRO 6977 3 5 0 22 GAMES LIBRARY (340) STONED IMMACULATE 6975 4 5 0 21 STATE OF MIND (245) -ELBOWS 6979 2 1 0 20 PASTA (616) -TAINT OF THE SEA 6950 4 5 0 19 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) COSMIC JOKE 7014 1 1 0 17 ASTRAL KIN (230) PLASMA GIRL 6996 2 3 0 15 ASTRAL KIN (230) -RAY MORAN 6436 1 9 0 13 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) ION FUSION 7008 2 2 0 12 ASTRAL KIN (230) SUNSPOT 7011 1 2 1 9 ASTRAL KIN (230) -RIGATONI 6976 1 3 1 7 PASTA (616) -IZ'CH 7010 1 1 0 5 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
