High-backed chairs with wide, scarred armrests were thrust in amongst various leather bags and buckled satchels. Several barrels were wedged in tightly in the forward end of the cart. A thick, oiled canvas was rolled up and ready to be lashed in place. Two pairs of stout oxen stood in front, harnessed and chewing placidly on a couple of bales of hay. Nearby, warriors from Astral Kin, likewise chewing absently on their breakfasts, loitered nearby to watch the slow process taking place. Havoc paced back and forth between the cart and the inside of barracks #4. He paused occasionally to holler various commands or curses. A team of three men kept moving back and forth between cart and barracks as Havoc watched, his thick arms crossed in front of his broad, mailed chest. His frown twisted into a heavy sigh as a familiar screech tore through the damp air and a narrow, purple oval spun into sight next to the cart. The oxen paused in their chewing momentarily, their ears pricked high and their shoulders rolled forward, preparing to bolt or charge as necessary. The screeching quickly died; the purple oval evaporated; a slender young man wrapped in a thick purple robe trod lightly towards Havoc. "Ho, Havoc!" "What is it now, Kid?" The Arcane Kid stopped in front of Havoc and met his frown with a light-hearted smile. He turned slightly and gave a brief wave towards the cart with the back of a well-manicured hand. "How are the preparations going?" "You can see, can't you?" said Havoc gruffly. "We're only taking a few essentials. Don't know yet what your plans are for the Kin. Some of them are a little nervous." "Ha ha! Are they?" Arcane glanced around, but the warriors had suddenly remembered various errands in other parts of the compound. None were in sight. "Well, what are they nervous about? The coming blood feud from State of Mind? I'll wager that silly Sunspot was more surprised than his opponent." "Probably!" snorted Havoc. "But I don't think that's what's on everyone's mind." "We'll just have to see how he handles the challenges we know are coming his way," replied Arcane absently, watching the men load the cart. "No kiddin'?! Wow, why didn't I think of that?!" snapped Havoc as he pivoted and stomped heavily into barracks #4. Arcane shook his head and followed tranquilly. Havoc muttered a few instructions to a handful of workers (who quickly disappeared) and then dragged a bench over to the fire pit, which was packed with layers of fiercely glowing crimson coals. High above the coals, a pronged skewer crowded with a dozen chickens turned slowly. A young boy, perspiring and standing on a short stool, turned the long crank handle. Havoc ignored him and snatched up a small keg that was sitting on the wide rim of the fire pit. He pulled a thick cork from one end and poured a dark, frothy liquid into a deep goblet. As Havoc recorked the keg, Arcane bent forward and snuffled in the general direction of the goblet. Havoc snatched it up and glared briefly at the Kid before taking a moment to gulp a few swallows. He made a deep, contented sigh and dropped heavily onto the bench. "That doesn't smell like your usual, caustic brew," sniffed Arcane. "It's not," admitted Havoc. A brief smile traced across his face and evaporated quickly. "Got it from a merchant who supplies the Dark Arena warriors with their stuff. Imported from some far place." Havoc gulped another swallow. "It's really good," he growled. "Uh huh." Arcane moved toward the boy who had been industriously turning the crank. A quick wave of dismissal sent the boy scampering off. "If those chickens burn, only Ion will be able to eat 'em!" said Havoc. "This won't take long," smiled Arcane. "I need to know the status of the warriors for Shadowspire." "What about 'em?" Havoc's eyes narrowed suspiciously. "They already left, Kid. Sent 'em on the local transport a couple of days ago. They're supposed to rent a place and get settled." "How'd they seem to you?" asked the Kid nonchalantly. "They weren't much. I doubt if you'll get even one win the first time out the gate!" Havoc drained the goblet and set it down on the low stone wall surrounding the fire pit. "Are you sure you don't want to just send the whole team to the Dark Arena on their first turn? They're going to lose anyway." "You sent a team of unknown fighters, AND money, to...?" "No! C'mon, Kid! You know me better than that. Fortunately, Solly hasn't been doing much since his retirement. I gave him some cash, the forms and legal stuff, and sent him with that, that... team." "Now Havoc, you don't need to..." "The hell I don't!" interrupted Havoc gruffly. "And what about that name you picked? Archaic Chaos? What does that mean?" "Well, I was trying to keep the initials the same as Astral Kin. That way we don't have to buy new luggage..." "Oh yeah. That's a plan." "I know what I'm doing, Havoc. That name is perfect for the types of warriors I envision." "You have to get your vision checked, Kid. Those guys were big, strong, and stupid. Pretty much worthless, except for that one," he paused and seemed to ruminate. "Did one of them stand out to you?" asked the Kid expectantly. "Yeah, come to think of it," replied Havoc. "There was one girl in the group. She was short, weak, and stupid." "Look, Havoc, I know you're not thrilled with the process here," Arcane said, "but it's the system we have to work with. This is just the way it is. Get over it!" "Kid, why didn't you let me use a few of the guys I have on tap from my interviews?" "That lot?!" Arcane snorted and gave a light-hearted chuckle. "Did you eventually find anyone worth wasting our time?" "HEY! Most of them were better than the five we sent to Shadowspit!" "Shadowspire, Havoc. Shadowspire." "Whatever," grated Havoc. "The point is, those guys are worthless! They won't be much help to us, whatever arena they're in!" "Didn't you place them in the growth chambers for a little fine tuning?" "Sure, sure. Sort of." "Sort of?" Arcane cocked his head quizzically. "Well, we had a hard time packing three of them into the tubes. I don't think they were able to get a good dose of that Gamma K radiation you're so hep on. And also, hey, they smell pretty bad. That Gamma stuff made it worse." "Gamma K has many uses, Havoc, not the least of which..." "Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, I think a couple of these guys are no longer morons. They're just slow." Havoc grit his teeth and leaned toward the Kid. "And one guy can probably hit a little harder than a small girl. Maybe. But he can't carry much more than a stick." Havoc took another healthy swallow from his goblet. "What the hell s good about THAT?! I'd like to know!!" "Now now," smiled Arcane. He made a placating gesture. "We have to work with what the commission sends us. Who knows? Perhaps a recent parlay with the giants and orcs has resulted in an influx of lost souls who are now looking for a means of employment. Think of this as a public service." Havoc growled and moaned at the same time. "Don't worry too much about it," chuckled Arcane as a familiar sparkle began to play about his features. "The sooner they die, the sooner you can hire replacements to suit you!" "Hey! What about the Kin?!" Havoc yelled into the purple light that enveloped the slim figure. The shrieking departure of the Arcane Kid echoed in barracks #4 for a few moments. Havoc sighed and uncorked the keg. He poured his goblet full, then shook the keg and frowned. "Boy! Get back to work!" Havoc barked. Shaking his head and mumbling under his breath, he finally shrugged and trickled the last of the contents of the keg over the chickens as they slowly began twisting over the coals again. A pleasant aroma arose as Havoc dropped once again onto the bench and tossed the empty keg into the fire pit. "We're gonna get our asses kicked good," he muttered to himself. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 645): IOSIO of PHILANTHROPISTS (Aragorn, mgr.) SPY REPORT Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in OSKSI this turn, and let's start with a look at some of the teams. It seems the training can make the difference, as GENERATION X is pushed out of top team by IRATE FORMATIONS, who came from 2nd with a 3-0-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for GENERATION X, whose 1-3-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 5th. The ASTRAL KIN guild has had a 4-1-1 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, PLASMA GIRL fought MENOLDRIN SKO and gained 17 points and contributed to ASTRAL KIN's 4-1-1. MENOLDRIN SKO has lost to PLASMA GIRL, falling 15 points, while helping make GAMES LIBRARY a 1-4-0 turn. This week's Duelmaster bout was between KOVARAMANN VOTH and our Duelmaster FURIOUS GORGE, making a challenge. Defending his title for another turn, FURIOUS GORGE kept GAMES LIBRARY's warrior, KOVARAMANN VOTH, from claiming the throne. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Elefont until they win. Maybe? The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. GENERATION X has cause to stand tall, as they were OSKSI's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding GENERATION X more than any other team we find DREAMS OF KADATH. OSKSI, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that KOVARAMANN VOTH from GAMES LIBRARY was OSKSI's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, ZOMBIE BAIT from DREAMS OF KADATH challenged up 25 points to fight THE VOICE INSIDE from the STATE OF MIND stable. ZOMBIE BAIT perhaps got its just desserts, seeing as it was subdued by THE VOICE INSIDE and ended up with 37 recognition points. We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and shave it close? Hearty mugs of ale were raised in OSKSI today as INSTANT ACCESS was bid farewell to a 6-4-0 warrior, with VECTOR UNSTABLE of ASTRAL KIN standing silent and pensive. Seriously now, is it really honorable for VECTOR UNSTABLE from ASTRAL KIN to kill INSTANT ACCESS and give GENERATION X the chance to bloodfeud? Mmmm, could be. I wish to point out for PASTA that there is but a single turn before GENERATION X and their warrior, TV DINNER, will get away with killing ZITI. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. I like this place, OSKSI, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? Always good to rest in OSKSI, but never good to wear out my welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in OSKSI again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FURIOUS GORGE 6923 13 4 0 117 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -FARFALE 6871 16 1 0 191 PASTA (616) -DAT NGUYEN 6216 19 22 0 97 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) VIRTUAL REALITY 6958 10 4 3 96 STATE OF MIND (245) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -PERFECT DRUG 6943 8 0 0 88 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) CADILLAC DUNDEE 6956 13 1 1 86 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) -WHIRLING INSELBERG 6924 6 0 0 86 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) BOB THE INHALER 6928 15 2 1 82 IRATE FORMATIONS (633) TV DINNER 4910 17 23 6 80 GENERATION X (416) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SHUB NIGGUARTH 6952 8 2 1 64 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) THE VOICE INSIDE 6974 7 3 0 64 STATE OF MIND (245) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME VECTOR UNSTABLE 6231 12 6 2 61 ASTRAL KIN (230) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FUNNY FARM FIEND 6985 4 4 1 43 STATE OF MIND (245) -DIANE MACK 6435 5 5 0 42 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) ZOMBIE BAIT 6964 5 2 0 37 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) -JEFF DUNKLE 6391 6 9 0 34 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) COFFEE HOUSE POET 6987 4 4 0 34 GENERATION X (416) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME STONED IMMACULATE 6975 5 5 0 33 STATE OF MIND (245) PLASMA GIRL 6996 3 3 0 32 ASTRAL KIN (230) FALRONDIAL VOTH 6989 5 2 0 31 GAMES LIBRARY (340) -GEMELLI 6926 4 2 0 30 PASTA (616) COSMIC JOKE 7014 2 1 0 30 ASTRAL KIN (230) CTHYLLA 6953 5 5 0 27 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) KAREOKE KILLER 6972 5 5 1 25 GENERATION X (416) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SKAEVOLOVIAN KOR 6970 4 7 0 22 GAMES LIBRARY (340) -MEGA PIXEL 6995 4 0 0 22 GENERATION X (416) SALDORINIVAN KIRO 6977 3 6 0 18 GAMES LIBRARY (340) SUNSPOT 7011 2 2 1 14 ASTRAL KIN (230) PRETTY HATE MACHINE 7021 1 0 0 13 STATE OF MIND (245) -RAY MORAN 6436 1 9 0 13 AMERICAN APPRAISAL (559) MENOLDRIN SKO 7009 3 2 0 11 GAMES LIBRARY (340) ELBOWS 6979 2 2 0 8 PASTA (616) -RIGATONI 6976 1 3 1 7 PASTA (616) IZ'CH 7010 1 2 0 5 DREAMS OF KADATH (635) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
