Reflections
The room was fairly large for a sleeping chamber, but the massive, ornately
carved bed frame and headboard easily took up half its space. Gracefully curled rods
of iron, shaped like strands of woven leaves, supported a vast, rectangular slab of
polished marble. Two wide, thickly padded chairs, their glossy wooden shapes likewise
broad and intricately carved, stood at either end of the table. This took up most of
the rest of the chamber. Modest light cast from a small hoard of red coals feebly
reached into the room, barely outlining the furniture. The shadows were thickened by
the moist heat of the eucalyptus vapors that spurted out of a small copper caldron
nestled amongst the coals.
Suddenly, a brilliant blue-white flame sprang into the middle of the room! The
shadows disintegrated; the carven figures and ancient, forgotten glyphs leapt from
the bed and chairs and stood starkly in the light. A horrifically shrill keening
rose and slowly died away. A swaddling mass of pelts and blankets, forming a huge
lump in the middle of the bed, let out a muffled groan which quickly choked itself
into a lengthy coughing spasm. The light died quickly. The shadows reformed and
blotted out the contents of the room once more.
The Arcane Kid stepped lightly to the fireplace and clucked to himself. He
pulled aside the heavy iron grating and used a short sword, lying nearby, to lift the
cauldron by its handle and move it to the tiled lip of the hearth. Humming an off-
world ballad of forgotten origin, Arcane briefly fumbled amongst the clutter to the
left of the fireplace, then began industriously heaping a small pile of split logs,
the length of his forearm, onto the coals. Satisfied, he replaced the iron screen
and sat in the chair closest to the bed.
"Havoc! Havoc, I know you're awake. Havoc!"
"Water," croaked a thick voice.
"Yes, of course." Arcane sat up and noted an oval silver tray on the far end of
the marble table. There were three large silver pitchers and two tall pewter mugs.
The Kid sniffed disdainfully into the mugs, and poured the contents of one into its
mate. He sniffed the pitchers too, and winced. The final pitcher held water; Arcane
rinsed the first mug briefly, sloshing the murky water around and around before
dumping it into one of the other pitchers. Then he refilled the mug with water and
carried it to the bed.
"It's not exactly spring-fresh, but it's the best I can do at the moment."
"Uuuhhh." The wide, square features of a grizzled gladiator poked out from
under the thick, ruffled pelt of a gryphon. The eyes were slightly gummed and
reddened; the nose was thick and scarred. The face was unshaven; the lips dried and
cracked. A heavily muscled arm reached out and floundered in the air, briefly.
Arcane snatched the thick wrist and pushed the mug into the sausage-like fingers,
which curled around it immediately.
"Drink slowly," the Kid advised, releasing the wrist and moving away.
"Uh huh." The gurgle and hoarse coughing fit lasted until the Kid had regained
his seat. He set his heels on the table and rubbed his fingers lightly over the
carvings imbedded into the armrests.
"You've been sick for some time now," Arcane sighed. "I do hope you're finally
on the mend."
"You and me both," rasped Havoc as he pulled himself upright in bed.
The room had grown considerably lighter as the wood finally caught and began
burning brazenly. A large battle axe, its half-moon blade and sturdy spike well-
polished, hung on the wall above and behind the headboard. It caught the Kid's eye
and glittered a fierce greeting in the flames' light.
"Much has happened since you sequestered yourself in here," Arcane mused,
pressing his fingers into a steep arch. "We need to discuss a few issues."
"Bluaggghhh!" Havoc belched loudly. He shook his head slowly, and then tossed
the empty mug onto the foot of the bed. Sniffling and shivering slightly, Havoc
began to resubmerge himself amongst the crumpled sea of furs and blankets.
"Havoc! That new giant, Nopey, proved to be lucky. What should we do about
him? Also, Sunspot attempted to pre-empt that blood feud and simply embarrassed
himself."
"So?" came a smothered grunt. "D.A. his dumb ass and leave me alone, okay?"
"Well, we did that, of course. But the warriors at Shadowspire aren't doing too
well, either," continued Arcane. "We need to come up with a better strategy-- Havoc!
Are you listening?"
Havoc was completely hidden from sight, but his muffled voice croaked weakly
into the humid, fragrant air. "Yeah, Kid. Relax."
"Well, what are we going to do?" asked Arcane impatiently.
"It's like I said last week," replied a muffled, gravelly growl. "Shadowspire's
full of warriors rough and tough (cough cough) and hard to bluff, right? We showed
up (cough) with a bunch of clumsy, treetop morons. We're gonna (cough cough) have to
just suck up our losses and DA until we can sign up some real talent."
"Unacceptable!" declared the Arcane Kid, slapping the marble tabletop with a
resounding SMACK!
"It is... what it is," wheezed Havoc weakly from under the blankets. "As far as
the Kin are concerned, hey--" A brief coughing fit shook the bed. "We gotta get rid
of a couple of more losers. What's so hard 'bout that?"
"Well, it seems simple enough," nodded Arcane. "But without specific
directions, nobody at the stable seems to know how to proceed. They're just muddling
along without you."
"Uh huh. That new gal (cough cough) that's been stuck in the growth chamber for
a while--"
Arcane shook his head and chuckled briefly to himself. "She just needed a
healthy dose of some Gamma K radiation."
"Don't get too cocky," whispered Havoc distantly. "That Gamma K isn't-- all
that."
"Almost asleep again?" Arcane sighed deeply. "This eucalyptus stuff isn't
bad," he remarked absently. Picking up the short sword again, he replaced the
cauldron at the edge of the coals, and then used the blade to scrape coals and ash
over the burning wood, banking the fire.
"Get better, Havoc. We need you." A flash of bluish light, accompanied by a
high-pitched squeal, filled the room. Both died after a couple of seconds, leaving
only the large, snoring lump in the middle of the bed and a gurgling cauldron spewing
a thick vapor into the air.

SPY REPORT
It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! ASTRAL KIN had cause to celebrate, after GAMMA K GRAD got 13 points by
beating CONVICTED THIEF. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and
practice more, after losing 12 points to FREQUENT FLAYER. (Discrete enough, PRETTY
HATE MACHINE?) BOB THE INHALER found out that OSKSI isn't a democracy. You've gotta
be the best to be Duelmaster here! So who was the warrior seen charging into
immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem...
And how sociable are OSKSI's warriors? Come, let us see. To quell some nasty
rumors, the guys in DREAMS OF KADATH are not carrying any incurable diseases. No
need to avoid 'em. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of STATE OF
MIND, so did that sorry team shy from DREAMS OF KADATH Is it charming personality?
Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, COFFEE HOUSE POET is
the most challenged warrior. Them's the breaks, VIRTUAL REALITY. Expecting fair
challenges from IRATE FORMATIONS is evidently too much to ask. FURIOUS GORGE bested
VIRTUAL REALITY with a point difference of 26. So this is what OSKSI calls a duel.
This will make an interesting tale. As a confidence booster, SHUB NIGGUARTH
challenged CADILLAC DUNDEE, down 17 points. Do you also slay vicious rodents in your
spare time, SHUB NIGGUARTH? Warriors of OSKSI! Do you wish your reputations tainted
by the base challenge of SHUB NIGGUARTH?
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Ask not a spymaster
for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious
stupor.
Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat!
Like a mixed metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid OSKSI farewell-- Novgorodny

TV Dinner -- Wow. From six skills to merely one. Why so stingy? I deserved more
after that beating I took! -- Vector Unstable
p.s. Fight w/o armor?? Are you crazy?? A guy could get killed like that!!
Coffee House Poet -- I need to polish my strategy a little more, so don't cut down on
that caffeine yet. You're going to need it. -- Plasma Girl
Falrondial Voth -- I guess that weapon's my favorite. Though my attacks were more
vehement, I haven't changed anything else lately, not even my underwear! -- Cosmic
Joke
Mega Pixel -- I thought I would take a chance and try to time your return. I had
something special for you, but couldn't make delivery. Oh well. -- Nopey
I'd love a copy of the map of the peninsula on which Osksi is built. I could swear
there was one that managers of Osksi were developing, with the Elefont and local
coliseum taking center stage... but it was so long ago.
There may well have been, but the office has been moved, sometimes in great
turmoil, more than once. The city maps didn't make it out alive. Am I correct
in guessing this request, for so I take it, was posted by the Arcane Kid? If
so, I'll winkle your email out of the transmission log and scan a copy for you.
Kid Arcane -- No worries at all. See you on the sands! -- Marma Duke
Farfale -- I'm very pleased to have said we fought prior you leaving for the Isle.
Although the outcome wasn't what I had hoped, I'm glad that we had the chance to
tango! You're a great teacher, BTW!!! Be well and see you there soon! -- Virtual
Reality
Cadillac Dundee -- Something's telling me you might be more Pontiac than Caddy? --
The Voice Inside
Kareoke Killer -- We make such sweet music together.... pass the chips? -- Stoned

Zombie Bait -- I would like a rematch in five turns when I get some more FE under my
belt!! Nicely done, oh undead one.... I simply hate losing like that! -- Pretty

Perfect Drug -- Congrats on your TV! -- Marma Duke
Plasma Girl -- That was pretty ambitious of you, what with the style mismatch and
all. Did you actually think you could win, or did you do it for the skills?! Either
way, nice try! And you're welcome on the learns. -- Coffee House Poet
Vector Unstable -- Okay, okay, I know when I'm beat. That was the most crits I've
ever thrown, and I still couldn't take you down. Close...but no cigar! I'll let
someone else take a crack at you now. -- TV Dinner
Stoned Immaculate -- I don't know... you seem kind of alert to me. Or do you fight
better that way?! -- Kareoke Killer
Nopey -- The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Maybe you should take up
basketball! -- Mega Pixel
Embezzling Scribe -- Just wanted to let you know... I never believed all those things
they said about you. Thanks for the welcome! -- Frequent Flayer
Kid Arcane -- Hey, are you writing another team spotlight this turn? -- Stormy, mgr.

just "thunder and lightning and rain oh my!" But the sirens! Whoosh. They couldn't
decide if they were warning us against severe winds, hail, tornadoes, or flash-
flooding. For the moment, though, it's over, so to get some personals written
quickly--
