A cataract of water boomed and swept through the city's overhead aqueducts, speeding toward the northwest underground reservoir. Bronze gargoyles from the water spouts of the wealthier rooftops, their features malign and secretive, vomited rainwater onto the streets below. Dark clouds boiled and crackled across the Northeast horizon, while the sky towards the West was blue and clear and tinged with the beginnings of an orange sunset. Plasma Girl stood under the crooked roof of a small side porch, facing a narrow alley. A silver tankard was gripped tightly in her gloved fist. She wore a short sword at her hip; its wooden handle, tightly wrapped in copper wire, gleamed brightly in the slanted sunlight. The dark, tightly woven ring mail of an Oskian gladiator did its best to hide her feminine frame. She had spent many an hour with a candle and an oily rag, lightly smoking the rings to give them the appearance of antiquity-- the armor of an experienced and battle-hardened warrior. Only the trained eyes of a veteran could discern the faint telltale of bright metal scratches near the buckles at her shoulder and side, and correctly interpret the rigid creases in the recently broken in leather. 'But a veteran wouldn't laugh,' Havoc reminded himself as he watched her from down the alley. 'At least, not a teammate.' Plasma Girl's back scraped against the uneven stone wall as she swayed slightly, staring with hollow eyes into the alley, watching the rivulets of water sweep odd bits of debris toward the sewers. Sodden shirts and breeches lay pressed against the weeping cobblestones, snatched from someone's laundry line and flung down carelessly by the torrential rain and rough, jostling winds. The wind had largely died down now; the sound of laughter and singing could be heard pushing through the crooked- planked door as Havoc approached her, moving smoothly and quickly for all his bulk. "What's the good word, Plasma?" asked Havoc. He raised his fist raised in greeting before banging it against his chest. Plasma Girl looked startled, but managed a weak grin. "I thought training was over for the day," she muttered. "It is, it is," chuckled Havoc. He stood squarely in front of Plasma, looking down and catching her eyes as she looked up. They stared into each other for a few moments. Suddenly, Plasma looked away and raised a shaky tankard to her lips, slurping loudly. Havoc put out his hand and rested it on the wall beside her head. Plasma Girl ignored him. "What's eatin' you, P.G.? You've been acting funny ever since you lost that last one to that TP weenie from Generation X." Plasma Girl's body trembled slightly. Her breath deepened. "How was I supposed to win? He's a TP, right?" Her voice caught at the last word, pushing it out softly. Havoc smiled and straightened, looking across the narrow alley as Plasma Girl was doing. "Well, you went four rounds--against a TP. Not bad at all. Hey, I thought he looked pretty damn concerned when you tagged him a good one in minute two!" Havoc grinned. The tension in her body seeped out. The two turned silently to look down the alley at the sun as it began its bright dive toward the horizon. "C'mon, Plasma. Spill it. What's eatin' at you?" Plasma Girl sighed deeply and gathered her strength, finally pushing away from the wall and teetering around in a half- circle, looking up at Havoc with clenched teeth and swaying slightly. "I know how it is in the arena," she choked out at last. "Pretty soon I'm just dead weight, and you'll be giving me a ticket out of town, or maybe send me to some of that 'special' night fighting, like you did C.J. and Nopey." "Hey, Vector Unstable went too," chuckled Havoc. "Don't you think he came back stronger?" "Stop teasing me!" rasped Plasma Girl. "I know my chances of coming back, and they're not good!" "No, they're not," Havoc shook his head. "But you're one of our veterans, right? Only Vector has more time out on the sand than you, Plasma. And he'll be gettin' his call to the Isle before too long; that's my guess." "So that means--" "That means we can't afford to get rid of you," growled Havoc. "At least, not yet." "That's not too comforting," jeered Plasma hoarsely. "It's a tough world," retorted Havoc. "You could die on the sands, or you could pay your graft to the Dark Arena and pray they honor it." "That's it??" "Then go live on the beach selling t-shirts or somethin'." "I came to be a fighter!" "So who's stoppin' you?" Havoc face was still and impassive; only his eyes seemed alive. They burned into Plasma's for a moment before flicking up and down her frame in a shrewd appraisal. "Plasma," sighed Havoc at last, "you've made it this far. I can't promise you this ride will last forever. Nobody can." "I, I know that! I j-just want a..." "A chance. Just a chance," Havoc nodded. "I know. Believe it or not, the Kid feels the same way as you. That's probably why you're still around!" Havoc smiled briefly and squeezed her shoulder--hard--then turned and stepped lightly over a puddle in the uneven brick road. Plasma Girl watched his wide mailed back as he strode away. The rays from the setting sun were shunted neatly from the oiled black rings of Havoc's byrnie. The grizzled bristle-brush head was half-hidden by the dark layered hood. Plasma Girl looked down at her ring mail and gently touched its rings with one gloved hand. A crescendo of pipes and fiddles now screeched out through the gaps around the door. Plasma Girl looked down into the tankard dismissively and offered a brief smile. Then she straightened with a determined frown and staggered stiff-legged to the door and shoved it back hard, banging it against a couple of locals who were loitering in a drunken argument nearby. Their yells mingled with hers as she smashed her tankard into the face of the nearest man. The second man froze immediately while his companion dropped senselessly to the floor. He stepped back and out of her way. Plasma Girl winked roguishly and swaggered awkwardly over her fallen opponent. She pushed easily through the small, milling crowd near the musicians and managed to collapse into a chair at the Kin's table. "What kept you?!" yelled Vector through the raucous music. Plasma Girl laughed and beckoned toward the bar. Her eyes were wide and bright and a little wet, just like the streets outside. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 649): VAN DERMINT of BOOZE (Papa Bear, mgr.) The celebrations, the disappointments... What's with GNOCCHI? He actually beat OSKSI's EMBEZZLING SCRIBE, and walked away with 16 more points from the fight. Major screwup at DREAMS OF KADATH. ZOMBIE BAIT lost 4 points to ELBOWS. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe ZOMBIE BAIT will provide more easy wins... Try as he might, SHUB NIGGUARTH wasn't good enough at persuading FURIOUS GORGE to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. No matter the time or place, men will always duel. How well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, GENERATION X! The bums at DREAMS OF KADATH couldn't face the challenges from GENERATION X! No excuse for that! What do people see in SHUB NIGGUARTH? His 10-3-1? DREAMS OF KADATH ain't talkin', but he's got 97 points. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that VIRTUAL REALITY gets in. He fights people like TV DINNER, 11 points below. I thought VIRTUAL REALITY showed great skill and promise when he subdued TV DINNER. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Warriors of OSKSI unite. You have only your games to lose! CTHYLLA looked pretty sick and surprised when she learned DREAMS OF KADATH is sending her to the Dark Arena! Whadd'she expect with a 5-7-0? Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously! Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now.
