His short, bristly hair and bushy eyebrows, frosted with a slight silver tinge, sharpened the edges of his rounded features. The fierceness of his eyes belied his bulbous nose and large, fleshy face. The small, whitened scars scattered randomly over his neck and jaw helped reinforce the notion that his bulk was somehow related to sudden acceleration and violent intentions, despite the fact that he was currently hunched awkwardly over a large crowded table. It was a solid, expansive, rectangular table about 7.5 meters around. The far end was covered with neat piles of daggers and swords in their scabbards. A spiked- ball morning star, its torn chain twisted and links scattered around its worn handle, lay nearby across a square of soft leather. A couple of heavy, ornate seals, a few thick candles, and a small, sharp-bladed knife sat on a miniature bronze dais in the middle of the table. Closer to Havoc were two silver scribe trays. Rows of various inkpots representing a half-dozen tints, and clumps of assorted quills of different lengths, were neatly placed in small square sections within the trays. A glass bottle of finely ground sand lay on a pile of absorbent paper sheets. A shrill keening filled the large, drafty room to its high rafters. An emerald light shone brightly for a few seconds, dying away with the penetrating sound. The Arcane Kid stood on the other side of the table now, closely watching Havoc, who looked up briefly and disdainfully and then dropped his eyes back to the paper in front of him. The Kid's slim form was draped in a generous flowing robe of green silk brocade, heavily adorned with pearls of many different shades and sizes. Silver threads cunningly fashioned an intricate pattern formed by dozens of various species of dragons poised to strike. "You've been ignoring my messages," frowned Arcane as he moved toward the table. "What have you been up to?" "Hhhmmpphh," grunted Havoc, slapping the table in front of him and straightening suddenly. He hunched his shoulders high; a loud crackling noise broke the brief silence. Arcane winced in distaste. Havoc rolled his head side to side slowly, relishing the occasional crackle and pop as he eyed Arcane narrowly. "I've been thinking of goin' into the cattle business," said Havoc seriously. "Odd," murmured Arcane, his arms crossed. "I wouldn't think you'd enjoy the rodeo." "Kid, I've been tryin' to figure out a way to get some beef to the Kin. We're all sick to death of mutton or fish almost every day." "Vegetarianism has much to commend itself," replied Arcane absently as he stared down at the paper that had held Havoc's attention. "Yeah....(pop crackle pop) but it ain't what I got in mind." "So I surmised," frowned the Kid. He looked up suddenly. "This map is quite new, isn't it?" "Well, it is and it ain't," acknowledged Havoc. "The real old maps of Osksi and the surrounding area have sorta walked away...somewhere. Can't find anyone who knows where they're at. And the local government, that, that--" "Council of Lords, I think," interjected Arcane. "Yeah, whatever. They don't wanna show me anything in the way of maps or building surveys or nothin'." "Well, duh!" laughed Arcane, straightening up with a clap of his hands. His robe flapped around him and the dragons sparkled and flashed and seemed to assault the air around him. "That's the sort of information an enemy might well appreciate." "Naw." Havoc shook his head, eyeing the Kid's robe suspiciously. He turned slowly and moved away from the table towards a broad, ornately carved chair. He sat down in it heavily and frowned in disgust. "It's all these damn, skulking Oskonian ways!" "Now, Havoc," chuckled Arcane, "you should know by now that the people of Osksi love subterfuge." "Love it?!" growled Havoc. "Kid, do you know how to tell if an Oskonian is lyin'?" "No, but I'm certain you'll enlighten me." "His lips are moving!" The Arcane Kid laughed softly while Havoc glowered in contempt. "I don't understand how this map helps your situation," chuckled Arcane. "Especially this map. It's rather barren and - incomplete, I should think." "Yeah, it is. But it's important." "How so?" "Well, it's got its solid parts and it's weak parts. Look here!" Havoc rose from his chair and prodded a section of the map with a thick finger. "See, these mountain chains runnin' southeast of Osksi, all the way to Jhelum..." "Yes, I see. I don't see a label or name." "Yeah," muttered Havoc sheepishly. "That's one of its weak spots. Some names and places are missing from old maps I've found. I decided to make a new one, sort of tryin' to fill in the gaps." "How ambitious of you," smiled Arcane with a slight bow. "But I'm certain somebody has the correct maps with the correct names for you to copy." "Uh-huh," replied Havoc gruffly. "But nobody's telling anybody, so I got to do what I got to do." "Uh-huh," mimicked Arcane as he scrutinized the map closely. "I'm serious, Kid." "I'm aware of that," nodded Arcane absently. "But I don't comprehend the 'why' yet. So the Osksi people aren't much in the way of cartographers. So what? I don't see YOU in that role either." The Kid sighed deeply and straightened. He looked up and straight into Havoc's eyes. The Kid's eyes seemed unusually bright and lustrous, but Havoc never flinched or looked away. Arcane respected that. "Just tell me, please--cut to the chase." Havoc grunted through a smug smile. "Kid, I wanna organize a cattle drive and get some beef in Osksi. I think the men would appreciate it, and, hell! We could even make a few coins off the deal!" Arcane seemed frozen for a moment, then he began to laugh and shake his head. His robe shimmered; the pearls glimmered; the dragons danced across his body as he shook. "Havoc, you're a madman!" laughed Arcane. "There's no cattle yard, no facilities in Osksi for this sort of thing!" "Not yet there ain't!" retorted Havoc. "Listen, I've been keeping in touch with some merchants outa Jhelum. Got some connections with tribesmen from the Smoking Plain. There's some sort of monster-sized mutant breed of bovine roamin' 'round there. Mean and spiky; tough to kill and dangerous as hell, but honest-to-heaven 100% beef!!" "You're a madman!" laughed Arcane, fading away into a ball of shrieking emerald light. "A maniac!!" "I'm a fighter, Kid, and don't you forget it!" "No, no Havoc..." Arcane struggled to stop laughing. He giggled a little to himself as Havoc paced back and forth in front of him. "Listen, Kid. My merchant contact tells me that Deepwell, on the road from Bonsur to Delarq Tor, is basically an overgrown stage station run by an ex-gladiator from Bonsur. Name's Beach Bob." "Beach Bob?!" Arcane began giggling louder. The dragons seemed to flap their wings and dart their heads vehemently. "Yeah, Kid, Beach Bob. Got a partner, too--Surfer Sam..." Arcane began shrieking in laughter. "You're a maniac! A maniac!" Laughing and clutching his abdomen, the Arcane Kid vanished in a sudden shrill scream of green light. "Yeah, well, we'll see about that," grumbled Havoc, unconsciously pacing back and forth before the incomplete map. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Woof! STATE OF MIND were a bunch of dogs after IRATE FORMATIONS got through with 'em! 4th ain't so sweet as 1st! Phhbltt! Too much drinking and too little dodging gave GENERATION X a 0-4-0! I got a good laugh out of it! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! IRATE FORMATIONS is now ranked 1st with a 4-0-0 turn. It seems so recently people were saying GAMES LIBRARY was washed up, finished. But 4-1-0 moved them up 3. I guess they're washed no more... What's with FUNNY FARM FIEND? She actually beat GENERATION X's FREQUENT FLAYER, and walked away with 22 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at PASTA while they watched ELBOWS clobber STONED IMMACULATE. He lost 12 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Try as he might, SHUB NIGGUARTH wasn't good enough at persuading FURIOUS GORGE to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... The most avoided team was GENERATION X. Management must be dealin', as the boys at DREAMS OF KADATH ain't reelin'! GENERATION X's mad! What do people see in SHUB NIGGUARTH? His 10-4-1? DREAMS OF KADATH ain't talkin', but he's got 97 points. Fighting is a better craft than farming, TV DINNER, but you have to pay your dues. Being challenged by VIRTUAL REALITY, 17 points above you, is dues. I have to get this off my chest. What a low dog, VIRTUAL REALITY! He can't set himself up in a real match. I was sorry to see TV DINNER lose. There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters to walk away, or not? FUNNY FARM FIEND of STATE OF MIND got 22 points for removing another young punk. Tough luck, GENERATION X! Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note! Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. OSKSI is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. For those of you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There will be two different arenas: DM 98: for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies, and DM 99: for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions: BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All is 84 points, 3-21, as usual.) DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur. REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters. CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In DM 98, there no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds. For DM 99, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair for those who could not attend the F-t-F). There will be no DA challenges. TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your rollups and strategies by Wednesday, July 7, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament. MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest. ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill. Errors must be reported before the next turn processes. NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games. FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49. AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills. The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion. Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie. A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills. The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts. AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three surviving gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters Games. Any special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be conducted before transfer into A.D. Astute managers will note that this means a slim, but possible chance that a warrior designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to glory in A.D. That warrior could be yours! The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make. When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
