The street curved across the terraced edge of the upper city; it was wide, flat, and lined with various merchant shops. Blacksmiths, weaponsmiths, tanners, bakers, and others had their pennants out and their doors open -- for now. The good people of Osksi were generally making their way home. The narrow stairs between some of the shops weren't crowded, but they were full enough. Some inhabitants chose to walk the street and follow it around to the one of the main central stairs -- long, gently sloping stairways connecting various terraced levels of the inner city. The Warrior's Way had small statues of popular arena champions scattered at its different landings. Even many of the stone banisters in each section of stairs had been replaced with miniature gladiators, in fierce poses, holding up the stone railing. Some were new, with clean edges and painted armor. Some statues were very old; their features were softened and rounded; the names on their pedestals were worn -- some were undecipherable. Two fighters slouched back against the stone rail at the top landing of the Warrior's Way. They watched the general migration from the Trades Quarter with the warrior's casual attitude of arrogant indifference. The townspeople generally ignored them in turn, though some of the older citizens ran their eyes appraisingly up and down their lolling forms as they passed. A nudge from the taller gladiator caused the second to turn and notice a young man panting up the stairs, dodging the many citizens walking down. He carried a large leather bag across his back, bulging with liquid and obviously heavy. The young man paused gratefully when he reached the top landing; he leaned against the rail and raked his arm across his sweaty face. Then, with a slight tilt of his head, he looked up. The two gladiators followed his gaze. There were two large oil lamps at every landing. Their wicks were as thick as two men's fingers; their oil was stored within their tall hollow posts. Five small glass portals were set into the posts at regular intervals. The young man's gaze followed them down. "Damn!" He pulled himself onto the stone rail and walked to the first lamppost. The two gladiators stood away from the rail and watched. The smaller fighter seemed interested, but the taller one covered his mouth in an elaborate yawn. The young man approached the substantial brass lamp casing and fumbled with large screws underneath. Huffing with the effort, he pulled the heavy brass and glass compartment up and off the wide post supporting it. He set it down on the rail at his feet, leaving the long wick to trail up and into the post. With a practiced gesture, the young man pinched the wick, sniffed it, and rolled it between his fingers. Nodding to himself, he unslung his bag and pulled a stopper from its spout. He poured all of its contents into the post, and then stopped the bag, wrinkled and shrunken, and slung it over his shoulders again. He had some trouble lifting up the lamp and replacing it onto the post base, but neither gladiator even remotely considered offering to help. Finally, the lamp was settled and secured. The young man wiped his face again, then studied the glass markers briefly. Apparently satisfied, he walked along the rail to the second lamp. Another tilt of his head, another inspection, then a heavy sigh of relief. The young man pried open a small glass door in the lamp casing, then reached in and adjusted the wick. Next, he fumbled with a curiously carved bronze box from his belt pouch. He took out a small shiny rod and a black, talon-shaped item. He held the rod against the wick, then scraped it with the black item. Sparks flew toward the wick, lighting it almost immediately. The young man trimmed the wick, closed and fastened the lamp casing, then carefully dropped off the rail and began walking down the stairs. "That goof forgot to light the first lamp," chuckled Gamma K Grad. "You don't light a lamp right after you fill its reservoir, you Nimrod!" Plasma Girl frowned in disgust. "He'll be back when he finishes lighting all the other lamps on this level, or some other guy will come along. By that time, the wick will have absorbed enough oil it won't burn up. Like it's SUPPOSED to work." "Yeah, yeah," gestured Gamma. "I can see the Kid and the new girl. Let's hurry." The two fighters turned away from the stairs and strolled into the brick-lined street. There were few townspeople in sight; they were heading away from the Trades Quarter, down toward the main part of the city. The gladiators strolled into the heart of the T.Q. in a semi-swaggering fashion. The shopkeepers ignored them, being busy with shuttering their windows, pulling in their merchandise, and generally preparing to lock up for the night. "Hey, did you see that statue on the third landing?" muttered Plasma Girl. "The girl gladiator with the broadsword? Her name was too blurred to see, but the team wasn't! She's from Astral Kin!" "Was, you mean," replied Gamma. "The Kin have been around for a while. Check the team stats." "Yeah, I guess," frowned Plasma. "But why haven't we heard of any really big talent like her? Good enough to get the Kid to put out for a statue?" "Who cares?" whispered Gamma. "Look, the shop's closed!" The warriors picked up their pace and turned suddenly toward one of the narrow, rectangular shops. There was a wooden outline of an anvil hanging from the eaves by a couple of chains. A sword and a shield were painted over the anvil. The door looked sturdy, but it pushed open easily when Gamma tried it. Both gladiators hustled inside; Plasma turned to bar the door. From inside, she discovered that the door was heavily reinforced with iron bands. Even the bars were covered with wide iron bands. Gamma had to help her lift the three bars and set them in place. The sunlight was almost gone. A small lamp burned in the back of the rectangular shop. The fighters headed that way; Gamma knocked his shin against something near the floor and stumbled forward. "Damn!" "What is it?" Plasma hissed, unsheathing her shortsword in a quick, fluid movement. "A sleeping guard, I think." Gamma rose to one knee and examined a large dark lump in the deepening shadow. "Tied pretty tight. See? His fingernails are white. No circulation. That's going to hurt later." "Nice," commented Plasma, turning back toward the light at the back of the shop. She moved toward it, making her way around various stands of armor. She lingered a moment to gaze admiringly at a rack of swords. Gamma paused briefly to fondle a falchion. They moved through the door at the back of the shop and found themselves in a large, open room. A wide round table, with several chairs, was at the far side of the room. A couple of large circular divans were in the middle of the room. A medium-sized gladiator in shiny new ringmail gestured from the foot of a wide set of stairs. A black hood, with uneven slits crudely cut out for its eyes, hung loosely from the gladiator's head. "Oops! Almost forgot." Plasma and Gamma each yanked a similar hood from under their armor and pulled it over their heads. "This is a waste of time," muttered Gamma. Plasma struck him lightly with her gloved fist, then the two warriors followed the hooded gladiator's gesture and moved smoothly up the stairs. At the top, they paused to orient themselves. It was another large room, with five table lamps providing ample light. Vector Unstable, wearing a soft, velveteen hood that fit rather snugly, sat in a large, overstuffed chair. A stack of corpulent cushions in bright colors elevated his heavily bandaged leg. His right arm was still in a padded sling, but his left held a broadsword across his lap. A burly man kneeled nearby with his hands behind his back; his wide eyes darting back and forth as he assessed the situation. The Arcane Kid, a polished silver mask covering his face from brow to chin, crouched just behind him, a jeweled dagger held against the side of the man's throat. "It's very simple, really," purred the Kid. "Your family is safely tucked away - - for now. We don't want to harm anyone, and that's the truth." "Then why are you here?!" demanded the man in a gravelly voice. "I have done nothing wrong!" "It's simply a matter of requiring your expertise in a delicate matter," replied the Kid. "Business hours are over," croaked the tradesman. "Come back tomorrow." Plasma stifled a nervous giggle. The Arcane Kid glanced up briefly; his mask hid his expression, but his eyes burned brightly behind its silver sheen. "You've been described to me as a retired gladiator and an expert in weapons -- their use and their manufacture," said the Kid. "I need your opinion in a matter--" "I am an honest tradesman!" the weaponsmith growled. "I don't have opinions about anything. Believe me! I pay my fees and I--" "I don't care about that!" interjected Arcane. "I just have one question for you. Are you ready?" The man's eyes closed briefly; he took a deep breath. He seemed more angry than frightened. Gamma K Grad and Plasma were both impressed. After a few seconds he shrugged his thickset form in resignation. "What is it you want?" "I want to know why my friend here keeps having such bad luck in the arena," replied the Kid softly. "Every time he goes up against someone with a little bit of a reputation, his weapon breaks." "What is that to me?" asked the man gruffly. "You should be looking to your supplier. Or maybe you shouldn't buy such cheap weapons." The Kid flinched, slightly but noticeably. Gamma and Plasma exchanged glances through their crooked eye holes. "We buy some of the finest weapons in Osksi!" declared Arcane. "Really?" The weaponsmith ground out a husky laugh. "I make some of the finest weapons in Osksi, and I certainly don't remember selling anything to the likes of you!" "Insolence is not the way to my heart," said the Kid in a soft and melodious voice. A thin line of red appeared at the ex-gladiator's throat; a small drop of blood began to trickle down his neck. The man grunted. "You mistake my meaning! I sell my weapons in bulk to the lower shops. Up here I make specialty items--" "I want an answer to my question!" Arcane insisted, thumping the man's head with his finger for emphasis. "Look, I am just a metal smith, yes? I don't get involved in any funny business with any of the gladiators, or the Commission, for that matter. I'm just a simple craftsman..." "Well, how do you explain it then?" asked Vector, pointing his sword at the man. "First it's a halberd. Then it's a morningstar. Then a shield." "They all broke in the same fight?" asked the tradesman skeptically. "No, no! Well, two of them did... but that's not the point," Vector said excitedly. "It's just that, every time I go up against this one guy, my weapons break! It's some sort of voodoo curse or somethin'!!" "Hardly a curse," sneered the Kid behind his silver mask. "Maybe you didn't hold the weapons correctly--" began the smith. "Hell NO!" yelled Vector, swinging his leg off the cushions and pulling himself unsteadily to his feet. "I've NEVER had a halberd break on me before! Nor a morningstar either!" "Well, if you parry at the wrong angle, or if the opponent is sufficiently skilled--" "That'll do!" barked the Kid. He snatched his dagger away from the smith's throat and then struck him sharply behind his ear with the pommel. The man's wide round eyes rolled up in his head and he fell face forward onto the floor. "We have to figure this out somehow," muttered Arcane to himself as he sheathed his dagger. "This fool was no help." "No kidding," murmured Plasma Girl. Then, louder: "Aren't you worried that he might report this to the commission?" "I doubt that he's that stupid," snickered the Kid smugly. "But I've left a sack of denarii with his woman; both are locked safely in the basement. No harm, no foul." "Yes, that'll make it all better," sighed Plasma, rolling her eyes toward the low ceiling. "What about that new team, that metal team?" asked Gamma K Grad, scratching his head through his hood. "They might know something about weapons and metals and stuff." "Poison Elements," nodded Arcane. "Possibly a source of information, but a causal agent? Doubtful." "We've never heard a thing about their manager," remarked Plasma Girl. "I always thought that was kind of weird." "I always thought YOU were kinda weird," growled Vector Unstable. "ENOUGH!" thundered the Kid. "I'll look into it when Havoc gets back from his errands. IF he gets back. The Shadowspire team has become an enormous disappointment." Arcane swept his eyes around the room. "Let's exit from the back and discuss this at the barracks." "Does this place even have a back door?" asked Plasma, mindful of the heavily reinforced front door. "How did you think we got in?" asked Arcane as he led them down the stairs. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 652): JOY of MIGHTY MORALS II (Assurnasirbanipal, mgr.) Twenty turns, 6 Duelmasters, 3 Kills... not a bad resume heading into ADM! I fear this is the final time I will be wearing these robes and sitting on this throne, as I am heading to Talahya to join my brethren. It has been an honor to have fought and survived this bloody place, for death and taxes truly are the only thing guaranteed in this fair city. Who am I... who AM I you ponder? I am: 17-3-19-21-9-10-5 VH/LO Halberd favorite weapon (should be fun with Tremendous dmg) Unfortunately Parry was my favorite learn; otherwise I fear there may have been greater death and destruction at my hands. I plan on testing this theory in the Dark Arena next turn... maybe I can take a head off with one clean swing. Soon, a new duelmaster youu shall soon have. I predict Perfect Drug will take the throne unless TMM holds him out in preparation for the upcoming tournament. If that's the case, then Shub should likely wear the robes. My brother in arms The Voice Inside is sitting out this upcoming turn in hopes of tournament glory. So for one final time... Your Duelmaster, Virtual Reality (again x5) SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of OSKSI brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, IRATE FORMATIONS, since GAMES LIBRARY took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see COFFEE HOUSE POET win a fight and gain 39 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, PLUTONIUM beat STONED IMMACULATE and STONED IMMACULATE lost 14 points. You're breakin' my heart. VIRTUAL REALITY Dark Arena Challenged SHEWISH GIANT for OSKSI's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And if variety is the spice of life, OSKSI may be getting bland, as VIRTUAL REALITY stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start talking.' I loved that woman. GENERATION X, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like IRATE FORMATIONS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. SALDORINIVAN KIRO was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. Now here's guts and stupidity all rolled into one, VECTOR UNSTABLE challenged up 36 to take on PERFECT DRUG of IRATE FORMATIONS. And, oof! VECTOR UNSTABLE saw stars around his helmet, after losing the fight, and disappointing the crowds, I might add. I guess I can give a little credit to ELBOWS of PASTA for challenging up by 22 to CADILLAC DUNDEE. ELBOWS lost to get 66 points of recognition. Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for OSKSI's morgue. More variety. STATE OF MIND has cause to pause today, as VIRTUAL REALITY was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of moods, I'll wager. Ya gotta go sometime, and SHUB NIGGUARTH's time was this time. Hmmm, not a bad fighter, had he lived... (what? me pity?). You can run, COFFEE HOUSE POET, but maybe you can't hide from DREAMS OF KADATH. Killing SHUB NIGGUARTH is something the rest of GENERATION X may not be able to help you with. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons? I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah!
