TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The New Old Kids on the Block
The building stood on a narrow flat area atop a huge mound, approximately 300
meters square and 20 meters high. It was relatively isolated from the main streets,
situated at the edge of Osksi's southern precincts. The mound was rumored to have
once been the site of an ancient altar for some long-forgotten malevolent deity. Few
citizens ventured near the area once the sun set. The building itself was long and
tall. Wide, grime-stained windows were set high, peering down blindly into the city.
The doors had been boarded up; the paint was peeling and faded.
Earlier that day, a handful of men had torn the dry boards away and entered
cautiously. They now tromped heavily back and forth over the worn wooden floor.
They carried out dusty, malodorous couches and stained rugs and heavily-padded arm
chairs. Occasionally a bird would flutter out the wide door, or wild-eyed vermin
would scurry madly outside, accompanied by curses, or perhaps a hurled--but poorly-
aimed--piece of debris. But generally it was only the men that moved in and out.
A pair of gladiators lolled in the mound's shadow, near the public fountain
across from the southeastern stables, watching the activity above with unfeigned
interest. The larger of the two wore scalemail and a wide-skirted helm; a greatsword
hung across his back. The sturdy handle was even with his head; the point of the
scabbard just touched his booted heel. The younger fighter was slimmer, but appeared
athletic and rugged enough. He wore ringmail attached to well-oiled leather; a steel
cap dangled a thin curtain of small chain links across his sinewy neck. The younger
fighter seemed more restless than his companion. With one hand he squeezed a pair of
gauntlets, occasionally clapping them against his armored thigh. The slender fingers
of his other hand drummed on the wire-wrapped handle of a Mordanti scimitar which
dangled from his narrow hip.
"Take it easy, Nebula," warned the larger gladiator. "They're just cleanin'
house."
"Yeah, thanks, I can SEE that," growled Nebula irritably. "What I want to know
is this: Why in hell are we here watching them in the first place?!"
"It's what the Kid told us to do," shrugged the broad fighter. He smiled
complacently at his younger companion. "You got somethin' else better to do?"
Nebula sighed and rolled his eyes toward the bright blue sky. "Maybe," he
sighed. "Maybe I do. Or maybe I just wish you'd have picked someone else for this
silly assignment."
"Sure," nodded his burly companion. He settled himself on the edge of an unused
horse rail, unconsciously adjusting his greatsword, then crossing his thick arms, but
never taking his eyes off the bustle above them. "I'll mention it to the Kid when we
get back."
Nebula's eyes narrowed sharply. "Wait a minute, Vector--I never said I wouldn't
do it. I just said that I wish I didn't have to do it!"
Vector shrugged again. "Whatever." Nebula frowned, then he turned and paced
back and forth, dividing his attention between the stables, the barracks, and the
coming and going of the Osksian citizenry as they went about their business. After
several minutes he seemed to run out of energy. He slumped over the horse rail and
spit into the dirt.
"There he is!" Vector suddenly straightened. "Yeah, that's got to be him. The
Kid'll be pleased."
Nebula had flinched at Vector's sudden movement. He scowled at Vector. "Who are
you talking about?"
"Him!" Vector pointed with his chin. Nebula craned his head and slowly
straightened. He now noted a new figure standing outside the barracks. From their
position he could not make out the features, but it seemed to be a brawny figure in a
long flowing cape. A domed helmet, long horns pointed forward wickedly, was clearly
outlined against the afternoon sky. The figure seemed to cradle a war hammer, but it
was too large to be a war hammer, Nebula decided.
"What's that guy there for?" he asked out loud. "Looks like he's getting ready
to knock down a few walls. Maybe these guys are renovating?"
"Not likely," sneered Vector. "That's Buri himself. Looks like maybe the Aesir
are returning for good. Or at least, for a little while."
"The Aesir?" Nebula shook his head; the chains tinkled merrily against his neck.
"Never heard of them!"
"They're an old team," Vector muttered, half to himself. "They were in Osksi
long before the Astral Kin arrived. And they stuck around long after the Kin left."
Nebula looked quizzically at Vector. "So where've they been?"
"How should I know?!" Vector growled. "C'mon!" He spun smoothly and walked
toward the nearest stairway. "All you need to know," hissed Vector over his
shoulder, "is that the competition suddenly got more interestin' --and deadly."

SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
OSKSI brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, GENERATION X, since GAMES
LIBRARY took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. GAMES LIBRARY
turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 1st place rank in the listings this turn. Any better
than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to
see SALDORINIVAN KIRO win a fight and gain 14 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FALRONDIAL
VOTH beat HODUR and HODUR lost 2 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety
is the spice of life, OSKSI may be getting bland, as ALFJAR stays top dog in the
city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to
know what's new, don't you, OSKSI?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
OSKSI, I am losing what little hope I had in you. GENERATION X the most avoided
team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like STATE OF MIND
avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me.
Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, CADILLAC DUNDEE was this turn's most
challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little
credit to COBBLESTONE of STL RAD for challenging up by 24 to CADILLAC DUNDEE.
COBBLESTONE lost to get 83 points of recognition.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for OSKSI's
morgue. More variety. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is
developing these kinds of weapons?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up
here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! Glad to see the back of this place-- Snide

actually won a free fight, too. Lots of interesting (and unplanned) deaths, I
notice. -- Kid Arcane
Aesir -- BURI!! Welcome back!! Jump on line and mingle, why don't you? -- Kid

Nah, write personals instead.
LLA -- Hey, Plasma Girl was special! I hated to make that call. By the way, when
are you going to bring back the others? -- Astral Kin
Jorja -- When Staplegun and Buri get more active in the personals, we'll have them
back. Right now they're just dipping their toes in the water. Wimps. -- The Arcane
Kid
Zombie Bait -- Why would anyone...? If you caught a zombie, what would you DO with

Of Alhazred -- I don't want to dream of Alhazred. He was nuts. He was HAUNTED nuts.
What if it's catching? -- Daeromenzian Val
P.S. Besides, I've got trouble enough with REAL nightmares, like remembering those
Hounds howling on my trail as I fled Kekoral. It gives me a shiver every time, and
that is NOT because we've got a cold front coming through. The king's Hounds were,
probably still are, a ghastly breed, and I'm not sure they're even fully dogs at all.
Can dogs cross-breed with demons? What I mean to indicate is that we aren't joking
when we talk about the Darkness creeping into our distant homeland (from your point
of view, no doubt, blessedly distant).
Hustlers Ambition -- That's a bit of redundancy there, isn't it? -- Falrondial Voth
Existance Mundane -- Well, thanks for letting me start on a high note, no doubt it
won't last, but it feels good anyway. -- Darirokan Kor
P.S. I'm just glad I made it HERE, I understand some of our refugees have ended up
in Cliffhome.
