TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Incident by Torchlight
"What's taking that idiot so long?" complained Auriga. "How long does it take
to drop your drawers and pull 'em up again, anyway?"
"Relax, Nebula," slurred Vector Unstable. "There're a lot (burp! Uugghh!) Eh, a
lot of buckles when yer carryin' around plate!"
The slim warrior paced anxiously in front of the table. "That moron better not
make us miss Arcane's meeting," glowered Auriga. "You remember what he did when
Gamma got a little frisky."
Vector nodded absently, then his eyes widened slightly. He shook his head, took
a deep breath and held it, then exhaled heavily. He repeated this twice more while
Auriga Nebula paused in his pacing to stare quizzically. Finally, Vector staggered
up from his seat, pushing hard against the table to steady himself. After few more
deep breaths, Vector rearranged the double-bladed battle-axe that lay across his
broad mailed shoulders.
"Yer right!" declared Vector. "Let's grab Vacuum and get back to the clubhouse
before the Kid starts his little 'encounter group'." Vector swayed a bit, but
managed to push off toward the back of the tavern at a brisk pace, Auriga in tow.
The small crowd was thinly scattered throughout the large, dimly lit room. Nobody
seemed to give them more than a passing glance as they walked toward the side doorway
and pushed their way past a heavy leather curtain. The bells sewn along its weighted
edges jingled cheerily, but briefly, as they passed through.
"I hate those freakin' bells!" growled Auriga Nebula. "Does EVERYBODY have to
know every time somebody steps out to pee?!"
Vector chuckled as they walked along a brief cobblestone path to a smaller,
lopsided building. Four wide doors loomed ahead; the pictures painted on each were
crude, but self-explanatory.
The path to the privy was well lit by a half-dozen oil lanterns perched atop
tall steel posts. Each post had been cast in the shape of a lighthouse. A miniature
lens and a small, well-polished mirror rotated slowly around each of the flaming
wicks. The ticking from their various mechanisms was loud enough to hide the sound of
their footsteps. Concentrated cones of light swept across the path in an erratic
pattern, throwing dark jittery shadows that swung back and forth.
"Now which one?" mused Vector softly. He walked to the first door on their
left and pointed to a narrow slot cut out of the wood, above the handle. Within the
slot a small sign, glowing with luminous paint, read: "Go Away!"
Auriga walked down the row of doors; the other three had this message: "Hurry
Up!" He walked back to Vector and nodded toward the first door. Vector sighed and
stepped to the door. He pounded on the frame.
"Hey, Vacuum! Hey in there! Let's go!"
There was no response. Vector and Auriga exchanged glances; Auriga smiled and
shrugged. Vector frowned and raised his gloved fist to pound some more, but he froze
as an unexpected rasp of metal sliding against metal whispered from inside. Suddenly,
the door shuddered loudly as something big and metallic crashed into it.
"Wha??!!" Vector threw himself backward, stumbling and clawing behind him
frantically for the handle of his battle-axe as he struggled to unsling it.
"You forgot to unlock the door, you idiot!" yelled Auriga. He looked over his
shoulder. Vector Unstable was frozen in place, hunched forward, legs spread, one
hand on the handle of his battle axe, the other clenched tightly on the leather strap
across his chest. His hands, Auriga noted, were trembling just a tad.
Auriga smiled widely, then he began to chuckle as Vapid Vacuum fumbled with the
latch. The clinking and rustling grew louder as the discombobulated Total-Parry
became more frustrated with the simple fastener.
"Sorry, sorry!" called Vacuum. "It's so comf'ble in here," he muttered
apologetically through the rattling door. "Fell asleep! I'll be right out!"
Vacuum continued to struggle with the latch; Vector took deep breaths and
scowled at both Auriga and the privy door. Auriga began to laugh heartily.
Vector's mouth set into a tight, unyielding line as he deliberately unslung his
battle-axe, and then spun the handle in his hands. He stepped toward the door just
as it suddenly slammed open. A large figure in plate and full helm stumbled out and
sprawled on the ground in front of him; the armor rang loudly against the
cobblestones. Vapid Vacuum scrambled clumsily to his feet as Vector continued
spinning the handle of his battle-axe. Vector's eyes were bloodshot but unblinking;
his mouth now twisted into an ugly grimace. The double-edged blade glittered brightly
in the torchlight.
"Uh, that was a lil' tricky!" declared Vacuum. He swayed unsteadily and
adjusted his helmet, which had turned askew during his fall. Vector nodded slowly to
himself and stopped the spinning battle-axe; he grunted explosively while swinging
his arms back, stepping toward Vacuum at a 45: angle. Instantly, Auriga blurred
forward between the two gladiators! His hands shot out and clutched Vector's elbows,
effectively stopping the fighter's axe stroke before it reached mid-flight. The
warriors struggled briefly while they exchanged glances; their faces were barely a
handbreadth apart. Auriga's eyes gleamed into Vector's twitching stare.
After a few seconds, Vector blinked rapidly and gave a deep, shuddering sigh.
With another grunt, he took a step back. Simultaneously, Auriga let go of his arms
as he, too, stepped backward a pace. Vector reslung his battle-axe; every move was
deliberate and slow. The expression on Auriga's face softened.
"Let's get back to the clubhouse," Vector growled as he walked away. He didn't
bother to see if the other two were behind him. Auriga chuckled softly at Vector's
back. He draped one arm around Vacuum's thick neck and patted his armored chest with
his free hand.
"Have a little trouble with the latch, did you?" grinned Auriga.
"Uh, yeah," Vacuum replied with a vague nod. His puzzled face swiveled toward
the tinkle of the curtain bells; he watched Vector disappear into the tavern. He
looked back at Auriga, who merely grinned and shrugged. "What's wrong with him?"
Vacuum asked. "There's other toilets he coulda used."
Auriga began to giggle uncontrollably. "That one's...that one's his favorite,"
he gasped at last. "C'mon," he gestured. "Let's hurry back."
"Yeah," nodded Vacuum. "I gotta get back," he said solemnly. "Arcane told me I
got some special training I gotta get ready for."
"I'll bet!" chortled Auriga. He clung unsteadily to Vacuum's neck, tottering
with laughter alongside his sturdy companion as they headed back down the torchlit
cobblestone path. Their wavering shadows sprinted in circles around them as they
walked.

SPY REPORT
It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. We now have a new top team for all of you guys to dogpile on.
GENERATION X now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it. For every
winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at DREAMS OF KADATH,
who went down to 4th from 10th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid 4-1-0 outing,
VALLEY OF KINGS has advanced 5 places in the rankings. Advancing in the rankings was
PASTA who went from last turn's 95-86-7, to this week's record of 98-87-7. What does
the Duelmaster and Piltdown Man have in common? They are both the most challenged
apes in human history! Heyheyhey! VECTOR UNSTABLE got through to the Duelmaster
this turn. No doubt he was more than anxious to kick ALFJAR's tail out of the
throne! Our battling duelmaster ALFJAR has managed to hold the title, fending off
VECTOR UNSTABLE's none too subtle advances. Better luck next time, ASTRAL KIN.
Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid AESIR, please raise you hand. Wow.
Does OSKSI really have that many liars? For those of you who like math, try this
one: AESIR + Weapons That go Boom = STATE OF MIND + Avoid City. In a touching
display by a 'touched' warrior, HORUS went after AURIGA NEBULA, who was higher by 19
points. Well, when the dust settled, HORUS defeated AURIGA NEBULA.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Well, just when you thought it
was safe to put a new warrior in the arena. No no! BAST, a mere girl, was slain by
DAEROMENZIAN VAL this turn. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your
ally in the arena with you and see what happens.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in
next week's fights. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick
your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster
