Near Jhelum:

Dogface dumped his armload of tools onto the ground and looked around. It was
not what he had expected when the arenamaster, an august personage who should have
been barely aware of his existence, had summoned him. He didn't know what, exactly,
he had expected except that it wasn't this stretch of bare ground at the foot of a
hill, nothing but grass and stones. He hoped the bare ground and the shovel didn't
mean that he was going to be digging his own grave. He looked toward Nahrmin.
The arenamaster nodded. "This is it. We dig over there, by that tall stone."
"The 'Graveyard of Dreams', eh?" Nestor Khan's deep voice sounded like distant
thunder.
Dogface glanced at him and then away. He didn't know the Dark Champion except
to recognize him on the street, and he didn't want to. Something about the man made
him uneasy. Not that Khan had ever done anything to him or in his sight to
criticize, but...he was strange. For one thing, he wasn't a Mysterious Manager, so
why were his eyes faintly luminous and red when seen in the dark?
Nahrmin didn't seem bothered, but Dogface figured the arenamaster was used to
his Dark Champion. They probably drank beer together after the night fights. The
very idea boggled--the arenamaster kicking back with a beer after killing a hapless
gladiator or two? Maybe he, Dogface, shouldn't be mixing with these people. He
didn't understand people like this. He didn't want to. Let Pericles do it. Except
that Pericles had gone away to the Isle.
Nahrmin cleared away the brush at the base of the tall stone and indicated that
Dogface should start digging. Now that the brush was gone, the gladiator could see
that there was what might be the top of a doorway engraved in the stone. Probably
there was more of the doorway under the accumulation of dirt and dead leaves.
Dogface squinted at the problem, selected the right shovel for the job, and began to
dig. He'd known from the beginning that he would be doing all the grunt work.
"Graveyard of Dreams?" Nahrmin asked, once Dogface was well started. "Yes, I
suppose you could call it that, if you were poetically inclined." The glance he
slanted at his Dark Champion was skeptical. "I'm surprised the door is so nearly
buried, to tell the truth. I know nobody has consulted the old archives for years,
but I hadn't realized...."
Nestor Khan stepped up to the stone and ran one hand over the surface. His
fingers were very long and thin, his nails so long and pointed they could be called
claws, and sparks trailed behind his touch. "Someone has attempted to hide this
place, this entrance. Why?"
"I can't imagine," the arenamaster said. "There aren't any valuables in there,
just old records. Mostly arena records, though maybe some others. But--"
"Old records." Khan said the word as though he was tasting it. "Books.
Scrolls. Codices. What better to place to hide...other books and scrolls...."
"But nobody's been IN there, Nestor!"
"Uh...maybe somebody has, maybe a year ago or so," Dogface said. He flinched
when the Dark Champion turned on him like a striking hawk, but held his ground and
indicated the hole he was digging. It was going down easily and rapidly. "Here at
the top," he said, "it's blown leaves and drifted dust, like you'd expect. Maybe a
couple of inches. Been a lot of wind this year. But below that, it's fill. I mean,
stuff all mixed together, not layered. Like somebody had shoveled it in to hide the
door, then trusted the wind to cover the surface. And it isn't packed down." He
drove the shovel against the ground to the side of his hole, and it rang as though it
had struck stone, not penetrating.
Nestor Khan crouched beside him and peered into the hole. There in the shadow
of the stone, the glow of his eyes was noticeable. "Astutely observed," he murmured.
"I will be very interested to see what, exactly, is in this vault."
"But all we want is old newsletters!" Arenamaster Nahrmin protested.
The Dark Champion bared his...fangs. "That may be all that concerns you," he
said. "I have wider interests, as do certain other...entities."

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in JHELUM! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Uncool, ARENA FELINES. I mean
0-0-0 is bad. Will they will be allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training
practice! FURY'S EDGE like really fought hard to move up to 5th from 10th. Way to
go! Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, HARMONY! 'Cause they got 4-1-0 and
moved up to 2nd! MVP award for SCHEHERAZADE? HARMONY's proud of her after beating
BORE-O-ME and getting 21 points. Talk about yer major upsets! BORE-O-ME's match
with SCHEHERAZADE cost him a loss of 18 points! Was that a tear I saw in REVEUR's
eye, as he took over Duelmastership? And wasn't DARK CHAMPION fit to be tied! Who
was the wiseguy that said JHELUM's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Warty
Toad? Don't look at me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? The warriors of THE SHALLOWSHIP
must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something
that I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why LOTHLORIEN's been avoiding THE
SHALLOWSHIP so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Like, is HAMMER
popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of JHELUM! He's got a 4-1-0, is
that good?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. BLINK really fought hard against GIMLET.
That'll teach THE SHALLOWSHIP not to go and kill any of LOTHLORIEN's guys again, huh!
Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or
have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Dark Champion of Black & Blue -- I argued with Narhmin that you should NOT be given
"lands" by the state, on the grounds that: a) the state isn't the one that promised
them to you, and b) you have usurped my name. I feel that I should be the one giving
you a "going away present," but that stiff-necked ass of an arenamaster says "the
proper forms must be followed." Bah. I say you're lucky to escape with your life,
you name-napper! -- Nestor Khan, Darkest Champion of the Dark Arena

Dark Champion of Black & Blue -- Sorry about that. Nestor gets a bit, um, intense
about things sometimes. I suppose that goes with being a demon. I could probably
find you some kind of lands, if that's what you really want, but you'd be better off
taking an heirloom sword or some such and just quietly (but quickly) leaving town. --
Arenamaster Narhmin

Blink -- It's all well and good to live up to your arena cognomen, but you shouldn't
blink during the fight. -- Dogface
P.S. At least you have one you can live up to. If *I* go around trying to, well,
embody my name, all I get is a wind-chapped tongue.
