The doorway was easily cleared, but the panel revealed, sunken within the
framework of the upright stone, didn't look like a door. There was no handle, no
keyhole. There wasn't even a visible crack separating the door panel itself from the
frame. Dogface looked at Nahrmin for instructions.
The arenamaster was gaping. He opened and closed his mouth several times before
he managed to produce words. "It shouldn't be like this! I saw it a few years ago,
and it had a handle and a lock plate." He held up a heavy iron key to reinforce his
protest. "Why would anybody change it? This isn't some Mysterious Tomb, it's just a
records vault!"
"It is a Mystery now," Nestor Khan said. The Dark Champion smiled, revealing
teeth that were...a little too long and pointed. His eyes were visibly glowing even
in the light where he now stood. "A Mystery should always be examined. There may be
Clues."
"I don't like it," Nahrmin said. "This is a Sinister Mystery, and those are the
worst kind." He stepped away from the excavation. "Fill it back--"
"No." The Dark Champion's voice was hard. His hand closed on the arenamaster's
wrist in a grip that looked painful. "This must not be covered up again. "Dark
Mysteries gain strength by being hidden and ignored."
The arenamaster met Khan's red-eyed stare with his own hard gaze. "The terms by
which you serve in Jhelum are exact," he said. "Do not make me invoke the penalty
clauses."
Nestor Khan looked away and released his grip. "There has been some kind of
power at work here," he said. "Leaving it to continue its work, without knowing what
it might do, can be dangerous."
Arenamaster Nahrmin nodded once and turned back to Dogface. "Cover the doorway
up again, make it look as natural as you can--like it was before. I don't want
anyone getting curious until we can call in a mage to examine it."
The gladiator picked up his shovel again, but he could hear the Dark Champion
muttering. He hoped it wasn't a spell. If the man was really a demon, who could
tell what he might be capable of?
"I can examine it," Nestor Khan said. He sounded sulky.
"There are magicians I can call on," Nahrmin said in answer to Khan. "They can
come to it...clean of interference. There is already a tangle of spells and powers
around you; let us not complicate it further, to possible disaster."
SPY REPORT
I can't believe the violence in JHELUM! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Too bad, THE SHALLOWSHIP, but
HARMONY was just too good to be stopped. Uncool, BLACK & BLUE. I mean 0-0-0 is bad.
Will they will be allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training practice! The guys
at BLITZKRIEG like really pulled together to get a 1-1-0 this turn, moving up by 3.
MVP award for GALADRIEL? LOTHLORIEN's proud of her after beating EMBEZZLING SCRIBE
and getting 18 points. Talk about yer major upsets! BLINK's match with GIMLET cost
him a loss of 10 points! Like DARK ARENA's ARENAMASTER NARHMIN is sweating since he
got Dark Arena Challenged by Duelmaster REVEUR! The crowds were amazed this turn, as
ARENAMASTER NARHMIN killed the Duelmaster, REVEUR, leaving DREAMERS in mourning.
VANGUARD gets to be new Duelmaster. But doesn't this mean people might try to kill
him, too? I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They
want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? THE SHALLOWSHIP was JHELUM's most
avoided team. Is there some award for that? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are
LOTHLORIEN? THE SHALLOWSHIP, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them
to accept an invitation! Like, is TAZ popular, or what? He was challenged the most
in all of JHELUM! He's got a 12-6-1, is that good? People were asking me did
TRAUMER REALLY challenge VANGUARD? (all right, maybe they didn't, but it sounded
good!) It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but VANGUARD wants me to write
about it since he overcame TRAUMER. Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys
can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop.

around Jhelum have no interest in handing over some of their property to the arena
for distribution to graduating warriors. They ask, and one can see their point,
what's in it for them? And you know, that's hard to answer. If you were planning on
staying here, I could see it, up to a point (they shouldn't have to turn over their
lands for FREE, should they?), but since you're leaving for the Isle, why would you

Lord Protectors of Jhelum -- It's all a plot on the Grey Witch's part, this whole
"lands" business. She urges the various city-states of Alastari to donate lands to
the warriors who are supposed to protect them (and where were most of you during the
Rirorni War?), the warriors get tired of administering their properties, and she
"kindly takes them off your hands" and ends up owning large tracts herself. But does
