TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Sir Chester walked up to the Lizard Tail's Inn and saw the members of Code Red
standing outside looking at the top two floors engulfed in flame.
"What happened?" asked Sir Chester.
Killer shook her head, then pushed her long brown hair back. "Suicide stormed
in and told us to leave." She turned to Deadly who nodded. "Shortly after, kaboom!"
"Lost his temper," Sir Chester sighed.
"Good thing we don't stay in the basement," Man Hunter said.
Judge shook his head. "All my paperwork, all the years I put in and now this is
it."
Suicide strode out. "You have disappointed me and yourselves."
"But we went in blind," Judge said.
"And I took that into consideration and you still stunk up the arena," he spit
fire onto the street. "I will not tolerate this nor would any reasonable manager."
Sir Chester backed away and took off.
"I am leaving the mess up to you to clean up."
"This brings back some awful memories," Deadly said.
"Yep, but this time it's all our stuff," Killer put in.
Suicide put the cloak over his head and strode into the darkness.

If anybody had asked him, Dogface would have assured them that he was just going
fishing. It was purest chance that the stream he had chosen flowed near the
mysterious vault. He wasn't going to the vault. Not at all. Arenamaster Nahrmin
had told him to leave it alone, and he would. But since he was actually in the area,
quite innocently, he could just...take a quick look and make sure everything was
okay.
He climbed the ridge that separated the stream from the valley in which they had
found the old vault. As soon as he reached the top of the ridge, which had masked
sounds coming from the valley, he heard the rhythmic chink of metal on stone. He
couldn't think of any good reason for someone to be digging there. It had to be an
attempt to get into the vault.
He said, "Heck!" and flung himself down the far side of the ridge in a cloud of
dust and pebbles. It wasn't a silent approach, but Dogface figured speed was more
important. He didn't want the tomb-breaker, well, vault-breaker, getting away, and
he distrusted his ability to sneak up on anyone. Sneaking up on people had not been
on the curriculum back when he'd been in school.
He was in luck. The digger was shoulder deep in a hole against the sealed
doorway, unable to get out, and the digger was not Nestor Khan. Dogface had been
afraid it would be the Dark Champion, and then what would he do? He couldn't fight a
Dark Arena warrior on his own best day, much less one that was probably a demon in
disguise.
This was an orc, and not even a black one. Just an ordinary brown sort of an
orc.
Dogface ducked a wild swing of the shovel, locked one arm around the orc's thick
neck, and seized a fist-sized rock in the other hand with which to beat the orc over
the head until it yielded. It was his experience that orcs generally responded well
to this approach.
After a few minutes of being pounded on the head with a rock, the orc stopped
struggling and threw up his hands. "Okay, okay, I give up. Enough with that rock,
you've captured me fair and square."
Dogface dragged the orc out of the pit and kneeled on his chest. "What were you
doing?"
"Digging out the door of the vault."
"Why?"
The orc's eyes shifted. "Why not?"
Dogface raised his rock again.
"Okay! There's something in the vault, supposed to be in it, anyway, and if it
IS there, I'm supposed to get it and take it to our shaman."
"What thing?"
"I don't know. You think anyone would tell ME? Just that it's a ring of stone,
about the size of a bagel and carved all over with runes or something. Nobody told
me what it would do, okay? Just that it would be safe enough for me to handle, if I
didn't handle it lots."
"Sounds magical."
"Bound to be, if the shaman wants it."
"Magical stuff is dangerous, especially for people who aren't magical."
"So? LIFE is dangerous. And when the shaman told me to get this stone bagel
thing, well, it seemed like a good idea to do it and not ask questions."
Dogface glanced down into the pit. The orc had most of the doorway uncovered.
"I've been told that there's a magical seal on that door."
"A cold-iron chisel would take care of that. If there is one. People will say
damn near anything if they think you can't prove 'em wrong."
"This is true...." Dogface looked at the doorway again. It was just a plain
slab of stone. Nothing fancy, nothing obviously magical. "I've heard about...
treasure."
"I'll split it with you fifty-fifty," the orc said instantly. "But we'd better
be quick about it. Somebody else might come along any time.
"Like I did."
"Right." The orc scowled at him, engaged in the difficult process of thought.
"I'll trust you to stay up there and watch my back, or the top of my head or
whatever, in case somebody DOES come along, if you'll trust me to get the vault open
and not run off with the bagel."
"You said you had to take the bagel to your shaman."
"Yeah, but I don't have to do it the minute I find the thing. What I meant was,
I won't run off and leave you to risk the rest of the vault alone."
"And get any treasure all for myself?" Dogface grinned. "Okay. I don't want
to go there by myself anyway. Spooky isn't my favorite mood." He twitched a
shoulder and glanced around the sun-blasted landscape. Nothing moved, but he had a
feeling they were being watched. "Let's get on with it."
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, JHELUM? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Now keep the taverns open late tonight,
for there are sorrows to drown for HITMEN FOR HIRE, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped
them by 5 into 11th. Ha! ARENA FELINES turned their 2-1-0 turn into a 6th place
rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists.
Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see BORE-O-ME win a fight and gain 16
points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, BORE-O-ME beat HAMMER and HAMMER lost 13 points. You're
breakin' my heart. Looks like JHELUM has some guts at least, VANGUARD the Duelmaster
was this turn's most-challenged warrior. CYCLONE challenged JHELUM's Duelmaster for
a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice of life, JHELUM may be getting
bland, as VANGUARD stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but
why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, JHELUM?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
What's the big D? BLITZKRIEG was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like FUNNY HA HA avoided them the most
this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Looks like time
for laurels or hemlock, TRAUMER was challenged by TAZ, who was ranked 29 points below
him. And The Dripping Blade has banned TRAUMER from service until next turn for
losing to TAZ and giving him 25 points in the process! Ha!
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines
through use. Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of JHELUM. I feel much better now. Glad to see the back of
this place-- Snide Clemens

Rogue 7 -- Wow, ma'am, you're a real fox! Thanks for visiting me in the Infirmary.
I'll bring you some of the treasure from the tomb, okay? -- Dogface
Ril -- There's not enough TO that name. I couldn't get a grip on it. Or you either,
you slippery little thing. -- Jimmy Custer
Lord Protector Reveur -- So! You scorn my offer of a fair and companionable dialog
and attempt to do me harm? In the immortal words of Debby Tonte, As if! Be off with
you, then. -- Arenamaster Narhmin
Cyclone -- I don't think you're very NICE, you know! Hitting me like that! You're
no gentleman, sir. But then (wink), I'm no lady. -- Venomous Vixen
Bruno -- You think your last audit was bad? Trust me, it could have been MUCH worse.
-- E. Scribe
Galadriel -- You took advantage of me when I was tired. While this is, of course,
the Delarquan Way, I would PREFER that you practiced it on someone ELSE. -- E. Scribe
Lord Protector Cyclone of Fury's Edge -- Is there no end to this vexed land problem?
If you really want something in the way of real estate (as opposed, one assumes, to
false estate), you will have to contact me. The question is not a simple one. There
ARE some properties on which you could get a lease, with the arena covering part of
the lease and you covering the rest, but the landlords are very, ahem, restive about
absentee tenants. -- Arenamaster Narhmin

HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.
19 September 2005
I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for
five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
Xiang, D2-101
