TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The days leading up to the Grande Celebration melded into a continuous stream of
activities for the men and women who had sworn their lives to serving Master Beru and
the Lady Rodara. Each sworn member, from the old and infirm to the young and
incompetent, received an assignment to line up a certain food or entertainment or
event. And as each day passed, a new discovery required those who had successfully
completed their first task to take on another. Even the gladiators shouldered a
portion of the responsibility.
And so Panther and Leopard could be found, the day before the party, mere hours
before their arena fights, haggling with a street merchant who had "acquired" four
cases of Mordanti spirits which had been intended for the party. The girls debated
the "true" ownership of the materials with the merchant, named Ali, until the five
guards appeared in the street and formed a semi-circle around them and Mr. Ali. Both
women placed hands on their hilts, expecting to have a live practice session before
their arena battles.
"Now ladies, please, please. Blood is not a good thing to spill in front of a
store, least of all my store. Please, please. Do not worry yourselves about Orgen
and his friends. They are only here for those who might harm me, you know?"
The wording of the question was not lost on Leopard. She dressed to capture his
attention, but her red pumps and black miniskirt might as well have been woolen
robes. Ali's prowess as a merchant fascinated the young warrior, although his taste
in bodyguards left much to be desired.
"Very well. Ali, as we have already discussed, even in light of your 'friends',
I can not do anything more than what I have already offered you. If you think this
is too low, then I must be about my business. Regrettably, my fight will start
shortly, and I must be there."
Ali's brown eyes stared at her and she could almost feel the gears turning
behind them. His old ways were to be a ferocious competitor, but her tone brought
him up short. Something in her voice confirmed her words, adding a chilling effect
to it.
After an agonizing minute of silence, Ali nodded his head. Leopard jumped up
clapping her hands and hugging Panther. Panther's eyes remained trained on the
circle of men around her. Her role here was protection and she intended to do her
part.
Leopard indiscreetly pulled a bag of coins from her bosom, drawing distracted
glances at the cleavage still evident from the freshly opened garment. Her mind on
her work, Leopard failed to register the effect she was having. Panther turned her
head to watch another of the men and thought wonderingly about whether any had any
other thoughts besides the ones written plainly on their faces.
As the pair concluded their business and headed down the street, neither noticed
the shadow that followed a short distance behind them. Perhaps it is best that they
did not, though. The two kids who saw the shadow disappeared that day without a
trace.
<Big Bash>
Four bands, sixteen buildings, three inns, hundreds of servants hired for just
this event, and enough food to required several wagons to attempt to move it. As the
fights ended, the arenamaster declared the beginning of the festivities and the
drinking had begun then. A healer, brought into town by Master Beru, laid hands on
the wounded that day to ensure that everyone had a chance to partake.
From the balcony of their estate house, Master Beru and the Lady Rodara watched
gleefully as the men and women below luxuriated in the festival. A steady stream of
well-wishers climbed to the balcony to thank their hosts. Both hosts shook hands,
hugged, and teased those who stopped by.
All around Jhelum, people celebrated the welcome home.
SPY REPORT
Good day, in JHELUM a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor.
So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. And let's see, EPIMONIDAS fought
ARAGANT and gained 19 points and contributed to DOGS OF WAR's 4-1-0. Due to his
absence and inability to defend the throne, FOOT BALL has lost the title of
Duelmaster. And not without some honor, ARAGANT now claims the title and throne of
Duelmaster of JHELUM. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night,
cramped under the table at The Dripping Blade?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. DOGS OF WAR has cause to stand tall, as they were JHELUM's
most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who
avoided DOGS OF WAR stable the most? Believe it or not, it was THE SHALLOWSHIP.
Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that MIA2 from TANKS FOR NOTHIN'
was JHELUM's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, TELL ME A LIE
from BAD PINOCCHIO challenged up 19 points to fight MIA2 from the TANKS FOR NOTHIN'
stable. TELL ME A LIE perhaps got its just desserts, seeing as it subdued MIA2 and
ended up with 29 recognition points.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. We'd like to remind certain teams
not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered
rude.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Well, I'm burning daylight here in JHELUM and I've a long road
ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in JHELUM again, farewell--
