Challost hunched into his cloak. The night was only cool, but he found he felt
the cold more intensely now than he had before. In his other life. And even if it
had been as hot as a month ago, he still would have been chilled by this meeting in a
graveyard. He looked at the dark stones, the silent mausoleums. Mist twisted
between them. A half moon was only just rising, and there wasn't much light.
"Your arrival is timely."
Challost twitched, which was at least milder than the jump and shriek with which
he'd greeted the first meeting here. Did a human ever get truly used to meeting a
demon in a graveyard? Maybe necromancers did, but he hoped he never would. "I owe
you obedience, Nestor Khan," he said.
The demon materialized from the shadows of a large mausoleum. "Many mortals try
to evade their debts."
"Even debts to you? Never mind, not my business. But I do my best to keep
square with the world."
"A good attitude. Cultivate it." The demonic Dark Champion gestured toward the
deeper shadow that was the doorway to the tomb. "Come inside and we will talk."
A cozy chat in a crypt with a demon at midnight. What a thrill. But it wasn't
like he had a choice. Okay, he could go along with this or die, but even if that was
technically a choice, he didn't care for it. he stepped through the dark doorway
into more darkness. It felt like a lot bigger space than the mausoleum's outward
appearance promised.
The door closed, a soft sound but easily identified by the way it compressed the
air. A light bloomed ahead of him. A very ordinary oil lamp with a body of
tarnished silver and a painted glass globe, the kind of thing someone's elderly aunt
might have in the parlor. It stood on a round mahogany table flanked by two chairs
of wood carved into insane curlicues and upholstered in dusty red velvet.
"We have things to discuss. More things than can be comfortably discussed
outside in a howling gale, and I want your full attention," the demon said,
shrugging. "I borrowed this room from my Aunt Lily."
"I never thought of a demon as someone who'd have an aunt," Challost admitted.
Nestor Khan raised an eyebrow. "No aunts? Did you think we were spontaneously
generated somehow? Born full-grown from the mind of Gheal? Of course we have aunts.
And uncles, mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, the whole arrangement. We
aren't FREAKS."
"Well...I guess not. But you're the Unknown." Challost shrugged. It actually
felt good to be a little reckless. To say what he was thinking instead of trying to
watch every word. If the demon lost it and burned him to a cinder here and now,
well...he was already listed as dead.
Nestor Khan shrugged and sighed. "We are not an unnatural creation," he
repeated, "although I do grasp the direction of your confusion. An alarming thought
in itself, in all truth. But as Arenamaster Vashku of Tobir and I warned our
mutual...superior, this whole business of posing as mortals is tricky. Dangerous.
Habit-forming." He shrugged again, growling something under his breath. "He didn't
listen, of course, they never do."
Challost was quite sure that he didn't want to listen to confidences on this
subject. "Ah...there was something you wanted to talk to me about?"
"Yes." The demon paused and seemed to be pulling his thoughts together,
becoming at the same time more human to look at. "Yes. A request has been made that
the Cult of Dreenth Shiszelle, the Spider God, be investigated. It is suspected of
dealing in matters that are, ah, allocated to certain authorities who take offense at
such encroachment. You are to join the cult and learn what you can of them. Other
meetings will be arranged when you have had time to discover something."

SPY REPORT
It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. F BALLS is no joke as it posted a 3-1-1 week advancing from 4th place
to 4th place. Hey everybody, watch out for FLAT BALL, who flew up 14 points in the
rankings after mashing CONVICTED THIEF like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And
falling like a basher in the top ten was M1A1, who dropped 32 points after a
disappointing (to say the least) bout with KHALHUMS DWARF. Going for the gusto and
coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was DOGS OF WAR's HOWARD, who was turned
away from the Duelmastership by FOOT BALL. Advice to bashers--never force anything,
just get a bigger halberd!
Here is other news that is of note. Did you hear that BABY BROTHERS was most
avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of BABY BROTHERS'
warriors, I'm not surprised! For those of you who like math, try this one: BABY
BROTHERS + Weapons That go Boom = TANKS FOR NOTHIN' + Avoid City. And who is this
HOWARD you ask, with 104 points and a 27-22-1 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell!
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! There's got to be more reason
for the sending of CRETIN to the Dark Arena than his record (3-1-0). Anybody got any
ideas VISION QUEST? FAITH says to hers dog--'Who should I fight this week?'. Dog
says 'WURM KIN'. So the gal dies. Moral? Put lying dogs to sleep. Yes, and
another newbie bites the dust as CHALLOST goes down under the sword of FOOS BALL.
Thanks to this, FOOS BALL now has 59 recognition points. Big man! FOOS BALL kills
CHALLOST. Who ya gonna fight next, FOOS BALL--Minnie Mouse? I hope DOGS OF WAR has
a good enough fighter to beat the snot out of FOOS BALL. Here's some advice:
warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in JHELUM have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy
Report. Good luck in next week's fights. And remember, you can pick your friends
and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown

PERSONAL ADS
Foot Ball -- I thank you, even though I don't care for being kicked. I care even
less for being duelmaster. Too conspicuous. (pauses to rub shin) I guess I should
be glad you kicked me there rather than, ah, higher up. -- Howard
Merkava -- Remind me to have you trampled by an elephant. -- Hannibal
P.S. I knew those elephants would be good for something eventually.
The Prostitute -- Beat it, lady. You shouldn't be hanging around this neighborhood
at all. People might get a wrong idea. Get you into a lot of trouble. There's
safer places to ply your trade. -- Pete Mastiff
Osksi Noble. (sigh) He isn't a good advertisement for Osksi. -- Leonidas
I salute the Persistent Beggar for a worthy effort. Not worthy of much, perhaps, but
it showed courage. -- Challost
Looks like those tanks are getting dangerous. Of course, they are machines of war,
so...why not? -- Hannibal
Our congratulations to Foot Ball, who is being kicked upstairs. -- the Dogs of War
